Does anyone know of a modified WPA_Supplicant file for the T-Mobile S3 TW JB 4.1 roms that would add the ability to see and connect to ad hoc networks? I've seen some for ICS but not JB. Maybe it exists but I just haven't found it yet.
My normal router recently burned out so I figured I'd use my computer with its separate wifi adapter to create an ad hoc network. Other laptops can see and connect to it (which is great with internet connection sharing) but my S3 cannot see it. That's the purpose of this question.

Hi,
I'm just wondering if there is a method to get the USB internet pass-through option wirelessly?
There has GOT to be a third party app that allows us to do it, no?
We have the Wi-Fi Hotspot option for that particular reason.
pass-through isn't the same as tethering.
correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't it the Ad-Hoc feature in some kernels?
Android doesn't support ad hoc currently and I've got no idea about the kernel thing.
If there is any way to get ad hoc, please let me know....
Well there is a patch for wpa_supplicant that adds Ad-Hoc networking support, but I don't know if it is supported by all ROMs and how well it really works. It also seems to break DLNA functionality.

which roms other than cyanogenmod support ad-hoc wifi ?
or any way to enable ad-hoc detection on ics 4.0.4 ??
my device is xperia arc s
I really dont know what ad-hoc is
sorry
did you mean wifi direct
ad hoc wifi means sharing your lan internet on your pc through wireless usb adapter like a wifi hotspot or from your laptop
but android phones with stock roms can't detect this connection , nokia and apple devices can
I've tried the ZT-180 app, it doesn't seem to work at all with JB or CM10 roms. I have to use a usb wireless adapter to create an ad-hoc network to get wifi at work. Any ideas on how to make this work? I know how to connect to my phone, and I can use that if I want to use data (I'm not so lucky as to have unlimited). I know that I can connect to an infrastructure network, but I cannot create one with my usb adapter. I've tried to learn more about wpa_supplicant modification, but I don't feel comfortable enough to try it.
Bump
Seeing as I got no response, I hunted down my own answer. This link to an alternate device's XDA thread shows the three steps to take in a windows command prompt to create an infrastructure (if your adapter allows it) network via wifi. This allowed me to use my Tenda W322U V2.0 as a wifi hotspot at work, which is great to allow my devices to be connected throughout the day.

Hi Guys,
I searched almost all the threads related to the issue, but found nothing that works. I have an old laptop that I want to use as a virtual router for my other devices. But sadly, it can only broadcast ad-hoc network. Even with Connectify I could not get it to broadcast in infrastructure mode. Now that is not a roblem with my other devices, they can see the ad-hoc and connect. Except or my Gnex.
I am using stock rooted 4.2.2 with latest radio and Franco's kernel. Is there any way I can get it to connect t ad-hoc?
Would be great if you could help me out. Otherwise I would have to go and buy an actual router (which I am trying to avoid).

Either you have to edit the supplicant list or get any of the workarounds. Have you tried this?
Hi there!
After spending quite some time trying to understand why my rooted 5.1.1 phone can't connect to my ELM327 Wi-Fi module, I realized it's because of the missing support for ad-hoc mode. I'm only able to see the ELM327 network with a third-party Wi-Fi app.
Most of the related threads on Google are more than 4 years old, so I was unable to find a working solution to my issue.
I tried the wpa_supplicant file supplied on androidtablethacks.com which seemed promising but Wi-Fi was not turning on at all anymore so I reverted.
How do I activate ad-hoc mode on my Xperia? I'm dumbfounded that a basic feature like that is not supported.
I'm willing to install another ROM if needed, if it's stable.
I really don't want to buy a bluetooth adapter, I hate bluetooth!
Could I manually add the ad-hoc network somewhere in my phone's configuration files? I know the name and channel of the network.
I don't need a full ad-hoc capability, I just need to connect to this specific network.
Cheers!
