Those speeds are definitely slow. They're sufficient for browsing forums, but loading pictures and music will be a hassle. Completely forget about video.
Luckily, Boston LTE is being deployed now so it'll hit your neighborhood hopefully sooner than later.

It's not sufficient to do anything. All I get are "cannot load, tap to retry". I can not even text that's, how bad it is. When do you think lte will be here in Boston? A Sprint rep told me it was being turned on the day before hurricane Sandy, we had an outrage then... I think she was full of it but hey maybe?!
If I'm not on wifi, I can't use my phone... I'd this normal in such a main, big city?

3G and the 2G (1X network) are completely different. 2G is responsible for texting and talk. If you're having trouble making calls and texting then it is likely due to either;
An outage in your area.
Or,
Tower upgrades in your area.
My only guess is that since Boston is a live market, they're working on your towers and you'll probably experience much better 3g speeds aswel as 4g speeds when the upgrades are complete. I'd hold out and see how well Sprint does with the upgrades. Nearly 100% of people that had similar speeds to yours are now perfectly satisfied with Sprint's Network Vision platform.
~OS

I get LTE in Wellesley and Worcester now. I've been getting it most everywhere I go. I haven't been to downtown Boston, but pretty much everywhere else has it for me. I even get it indoors in most places.
I actually leave my phone on LTE/ CDMA and get similar battery life as on CDMA only.

Sprint Network Down?

I'm in So Cal (The Valley to be exact) and my phone has had NO service for a few hours now. When I say no service, I mean NO service, I get the circle indicating my device is searching for a network. When I reboot the phone, it connects to Sprint but I don't have any signal. Then soon after that, I COMPLETELY lose service. Hopefully maybe nearby towers are being worked on. Though, seems unlikely at this time of night, AND i'd still be able to connect to another nearby tower. Anyone else having any service issues?
Sprint is going their network vision updates throughout all of la county right now. Trust me, the blackouts are worth it. They're doing work on the towers near me and my speeds are easily topping the 1mb download and upload. So far I've maxed out at a little over 2mb download and 1500kbps upload! I average around 1500kbps down and 1000kbps up. Your signal will be a bit iffy for the next few weeks though.
Edit: there's a new prl update it and at first u had crippling speeds but as I began to use my 3G more, my speeds are increasing. I was freaking out for a bit but just another heads up.

I use to work for sprint. Climbing towers. When I was there we tried to get the work done with least impact but a lot of it is driven by sprint's request and how many people are using the tower. If you have consistant LoS call sprint and ask them to check the tower or ask for them to open a ticket for a line sweep. Some of the times we had bent cables, which will block a lot of the signal.

Sprint 3G finally improving?

So I have been horribly frustrated with sprints 3G speeds since I got my epic. I live in metro Detroit. (Fairly large sprint market) and have averaged around 50-75kbps DL. With a 600ms+ ping. And there is ZERO wimax anywhere. I was getting fed up. Until over the last month or so I have seen 600%+ increase in speeds. I now average closer to 500kbps DL with a 111ping. And I have even had consistent tests of 1mb DL. Could this be the first fruits of network vision? Or other tower upgrades? Or somehow less traffic. I had considered it could be the newer ROM/modem. (CM10/FH13). Has anyone else seen recent speed increases?

yeah man here in st pete i finally saw a consistent 1 meg down and i was inside ( but near a window) the network map said theres about to be another speed increase here its usually a lie tho.... i doubt its anything permanent sprint fails im moving to straight talk once its all over but im supposed to have lte in my area at the end of my contract and i got employee plan pricing if i have lte at my house then ill keep them if not oh well. could network vision not just be a giant false marketing scheme?
edit well i just did a speed test and im back to the usual 300kbs lol lucky i pay a dial up price and get dial up service XD so i guess not. sprints the most useless unlimited ever. Even living in a wimax area the wimax sucks everywhere but the beach. ( where i dont even need wimax)
I have 5+ months horrible experience with Sprint 3G speed after last two days on roaming service came back this morning better than ever from 0.09Mbps download to 0.89Mbps download huge improvement sadly it last till this evening when service cut off came back horrible as always. :banghead:

Whatever spring says "network vision" is. Clearly they are trying to or want to improve their service. One area they are strong, customer service. But their tech(except phones) sucks. So the question for me is, just like the first guy who replied. Is if they can get LTE working by the time my contract is up. Or at least get 3g solidly above 1mb.. then I would stay no question.

+1, I have 1 year left on my contract. Next July I will re-evaluate sprint and see how things are going. If sprint stepped up to the plate then bonus I will stay but if its the same ol song and dance crap I am gone. Maybe this xmas I will do that re-evaluate of sprint and see what is up and just maybe I might buy off the rest of my contract, pay a etf and jump ship. But having to pay a extra 10 bucks a month just because of a smart phone crap aka 4g is bull**** considering sprint does not have wimax, 4g, lte or what ever here where I live and 3g is absolutly slower than dial up modem speeds.
Well Sprint Vision says that in the next 6 months a tower will basically be put in my backyard, according to their map. My contract is up in 12 months, I'll make a decision then.
I get 8kb/s out here in Toledo....

Mine has picked up in some areas the past few weeks but its still crap in other areas and at random times. Its also still much slower than 3G from any other carrier. My Sprint 3G speeds are often similar to Tmobile Edge speeds I had 4 years ago but Edge was more consistent.
Every week my 3G speed changes, today I am getting less than 100kbps when last week or so I was getting almost 600. I am hoping this is due to them upgrading the towers and that is causing the inconsistencies.
Are you using updated maps to see this info or are you just using the maps on Sprint's website?

Wrong. Sprintt does in fact have LTE towers up & running in small towns/cities with ABSOLUTELY no mention of it or any future plans of LTE on their websites or elsewhere. It's a proven fact and I can prove it. Does this mean your about to have LTE in your town? No. Is it likely? Absolutely yes. I live in a very small low economic status town where you'd think it would be the last place to get LTE but I have LTE and also wimax. How is this possible? I have no idea but its true and im happy. No corporate Sprint store or customer service has any record of LTE or wimax in my town, but I do have both. Its a miracle if you ask me. I hope this makes you feel better and will help you regain your faith in Sprint because Sprint is definitely working on towers and upgrades everywhere. No bs, its really happening so be patient folks.
I've read that small towns have gotten LTE because it's quicker and easier to update the towers and to test the network. I wondered the same thing. I can't remember the article, but I'm sure Google can find it. It makes a little sense.

Sprint will tell you anything. Most of it is crap.
Sprint's ultimate plan (believe it or not) is to have their 4G footprint be the same as their 3G footprint.
Part of the tower upgrades is making their towers accept network "cards" that will be "easily" swappable and expandable. Once the tower upgrade is complete, they will, in theory, simply need to pop in a 4G card and you will have 4G. (Yes, I realize it's a little more complicated than that... buts its the basic premise they are working on).
This will also allow them to swap in any new technologies in the future without having to completely overhaul the tower.
And, as a previous poster said, it makes sense for small one and two tower areas to be upgraded first, since it is clearly more cost-effective.
Although if I were Sprint, I would include these communities in the current 4G coverage map. It certainly would look better to see "75 4G markets" as opposed to the 20 that it looks like right now.
For the record I stopped roaming and my speeds results have been inconsistent this last ýeare that I dont kknow-how to compare

Simultaneous voice and data (non LTE area)

So I was trying this for the first time. Was pretty excited since I have always been on Sprint.
Anyway I just tried it and the data connection is HORRIBLY slow (equal to 1X or worse on Sprint). Is this normal???? I wasn't at all expecting this slow at all. I have a decent signal and everything.

Yeah. Its no secret. I even asked them in the store and proved it and still couldn't get a justifiable answer. Check this out.
thesmartphonechamp.com/att-secretly-throttling-their-smartphone-customers-video/
The data connection is almost unusable most of the time while on voice. This was one of the more exciting features for me (coming from Sprint). I also noticed even if you are in an LTE area, the data connection seems to go to HSPA+ and you have the same problem.
I really can't find a lot of information about this around the Internet. I don't assume there is a workaround?
That's the way it's gonna be until someone figures out how to keep the LTE session enabled while on a voice call.
There were multiple threads in the past that explained that once you do data and voice at the sametime it's not that it throttles you down it drops down to 3G or H+ because once on the voice call it can't use LTE for data it has to use the 3G or H+ network. LTE is mainly only for data so once you place a voice call it switches and that's what it'll use for data. Not sure if I'm not explaining right but that's the gist of it. So, if your 3G or H+ network is pretty poor in your area it will be painfully slow. Plus the 3G and H+ networks are still over saturated with all the iPhone users that haven't upgraded to the iPhone 5.

Strike - in short, I would LOVE it if I got H+ speeds. Unfortunately my speeds aren't even close to that.
If I stand in my driveway, I can get ~4Meg down with H+. If I get on a call and do it, my data goes down to 300k. Without even moving. Goes back up once on a call. There is something more to it than that.
I think my problem is upload while on the phone. I would appreciate if you guys wouldn't mind running a speed test to see if you have the same horrible upload speeds while on a call. I assume my requests are timing out which is why the connection seems so slow.
The first picture is off the phone and the second is while on a call.

Yeah, it must be where you live dependent. I've used simultaneous voice/data a few times in the last week or two, and the speeds have been generally very good in my area. A slight bit slow initially connecting, but once I did, it was very fast for me.
The screenshots above were about 50 miles from my house.

This is a real problem. I cannot even send a mms message while on call. AT&T should be ashamed of themselves. I don't care if the throttle the data while call but make it so it's still usable.
Lol people. No company in the US allows voice or is capable of voice over LTE yet. Only HSPA+ and 3G at this time. That's why your phone drops to it while on a call.

Unfortunate but better than nothing. Funny thing is I remember being on sprint and getting speeds like that and less when not even on a call. In se Florida Verizon wasn't any better either.
Here you go during call. Definitely throttled but it has been like that ever since I went to lte phone. It is probably just more noticeable because the drop from lte to throttled speed is so much more drastic than the drop from AT&T's HSPA+ to throttled speed.

Thank you. I went into an AT&T corporate store and argued and argued and argued with them on this. I proved it over and over with my iPhone 4S. They still denied it and said it was the tower, despite speeds being awesome when I hung up.
AT&T doesn't have to throttle in call speeds. T-Mobile doesn't. T-Mobile gets great download speeds during calls. I've tried it. The ping is exactly the same.
One AT&T supervisor I asked to speak to said it was because AT&T has way more customers. I laughed at him when he said that. I love how the nation's second largest wireless provider is always hurting for spectrum and money. Haha.
Wasn't this a huge selling point for the iPhone 4 on AT&T? SVAD (Simultaneous Voice And Data). It's shame how they throttle it down to the point were it is completely useless.

Reception In Fringe Areas

Does anybody else have horrible reception problems in week signal areas?
I know how that sounds... but, what I mean is in the city, with the corporate PRL (56xxx) and the LJ7 radio, I get better signals then I ever have with my Moment or S2, roaming or native.
However, when I go out of town into a Cellcom area, I drop to no signal unless I am practically on top of a tower.
My Sprint tablet and S2 get decent roaming signals ( 2-3 bars) while my S3 gets no service, despite multiple combinations of radios and PRL's.
Any ideas? Bad antenna connection? Bad phone?
Thanks!

I'm in Wisconsin.
I have also noticed that my phone roams more often than any other Sprint device that I have.
The S2 and S3 should be identical as far which cellular frequencies they listen to... so there shouldn't be any reason that the S2 gets service in 90 percent of the places the S3 doesn't even get roaming service.
I wonder how likely it is that the antenna write somehow got disconnected when I dropped the phone at some point in the past?

I immediately went from a 3 year old phone getting -80dBm to -92dBm on the GS3. I have used the 3G on my HTC phone day in and out here for the entire 3 years of the phone, when suddenly, the GS3 was timing out while trying to download Google Chrome from the Play Store. Web page loads are bursty... hot/cold/hot/cold and SpeedTest.Net App seems to confirm the story...
I could not complete SpeedTest.Net due to "communication issues" nor download anything until I forced the phone to CDMA only. Unfortunately, even though I can now USE the phone, the speeds are still kinda rough:
Pings are ranging 800ms - 1300ms consistently ( I was used to 200ms or less )
Downloads are 30-80kbps, I was used to 350-500k.
Brief Real-world testing of moving through web pages, loading videos and browsing the playstore also lean towards the numbers I'm seeing.
Not sure about what to do. Maybe the HTC EVO 4G LTE would have better signal. It's hard to determine without personally testing, there's a LOT of complaints both ways, on both forums. I'll continue to evaluate and give it a chance to improve. Maybe it was a bad night last night.
The word thing is that I get better speeds and reception on Sprint's network in Milwaukee than I do with my S2.
As soon as I leave the city, or even leave Sprint's network, the S3 becomes prone to LOS while the S2 chugs along happily.
And, as I said before, this is with the same PRL.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I've been noticing a lot more random LOS, and other signal issues in areas I've had signal before, and good signal at that on both my Photon and iphone. Is there a better PRL or Profile to use that will improve this or is it just something on Samsung's end that is gonna be what it is?
