There is no way to WiFi tether this phone? Guess I'm going to hold off until that gets sorted out.

I was just reading in the galaxy nexus section that today some people tried WiFi tether on their s3 and it worked. Maybe it will work on the note as well? I want a note 2 but I have to have WiFi tether.

not likely, I tried that, it's probably because the hot spot tries to contact a sprint network server that just isn't there on us cellular

well why would it work on mine though? i'm running your firmware on my device. with all the system sprint apps removed. i don't see why it wouldn't work? so if it were checking on sprint servers shouldn't it stop me as well? has anyone tried removing all the sprint apps?
wifi tether is working on the S3 but not the Note II yet (at least I could not make it work) I imagine it will be working soon though.
Wi-Fi Hotspot working dandy.

there is a lot of things that Sprint servers check that only work if you are using sprints data connection. sprint tv for example doesn't work in Wifi even if you are with Sprint because it checks with Sprint thought it's network and not through the internet

Hey guys, I just switched to Verizon, got a Nexus, and rooted it. I was wondering just how easy is it to get caught by Verizon if I use the wireless tether apk? I'd appreciate it if someone posted their experiences with it. Thanks!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I use it all the time and have never got an email in the past 2 years, and I use at least 5-10GB a month.
this is the first time i use it constantly . because of the 4G speeds. i havent got a email or a text from them.
before i had it with my incredible but hardly use it, because of the slow 3G speeds.
Alright thanks! This is actually my first experience with android on a phone (other one was CM7 on my Nook Color) and I had just always read that you get lots of sudden charges so its good to have peace of mind.
Sorry for the bump, I've got one more question. Wireless tether seems to give me a much higher data usage reading than the settings app in ICS. After using it a bit it said I used 500kb while the settings app reported that I used 1 KB. Is there a reason for this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
If you're really stupid about how much you use it, they will catch on but if you're smart about it you can get away with it a lot.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403133
Wifi Tether will not work with 4.03. I consistantly get errors in the startup log. Even worse, when on wifi at home im fine and my signal icons are blue meaning im connected to google servers. But if i disconnect off wifi and use my cellular 3G connection my signal icons stay grey and will not turn blue.
I had to flash back to 4.02 and instantly got blue icons on 3G and now my Wifi Tether works.

What????? Also YOU probably should look up sprint's policy on servicing devices experiencing hardware failure as opposed to posting nonsense in the wrong forum about a topic that can be better answered by looking at 1. Sprints website 2. Sprint online chat 3. Sprint telephone support (*2 from your sprint device!) or 4. By any employee at a sprint store... just saying... should all of those options fail there's this new thing they tell me the kids are calling "the google's", that may also help...

Why do you guys have to be such snooty little bags of DICKS? Just answer his damn question. Or nevermind, I will....
Sprint is now packing in an app called Sprint Connection Optimizer on many of the latest OTA updates. This will make it check for the best connection to use in this order: (Wi-Max Market) Wi-Fi, 4G, 3G; (Non-WiMax market): Wi-Fi, 3G. This is an effort to free up capacity on the data network for people who are just stuck on 3G cruise control when they don't realize better connections are available around them, such as WiFi or WiMax. Our 3G network is starting to vomit all over itself, so while we wait for the long-term solution (Network Vision) to roll out, they are using the Sprint Connections Optimizer as a short-term band-aid solution.

This app is called FoxFi, FoxFI WiFI...get it?...moving on,
As suggested from the title, this app allows you to use your phone as a hotspot access point free of charge; you don't even have to be rooted!
You can get the app down below
Play Store Link:

If link doesn't work, then go here
Foxfi.com/bin
Status
Verizon - Works fine
AT&T - Works fine
T-Mobile - Not working (from what I've seen)
Sprint - Not working

didn't work on my lg p500
because it turns off the 3g connection when I enable tethering.
but I think it's a ROM issue.
I have 2.2.1 installed on my lg p500, and I'd like to share my internet connection with a samsung galaxy tab (honeycomb 3.2).
With an other application (Wifi Theter) I can act as an hotspot, as I want, but my galaxy tab can't see the wifi network available. other devices can, I can connect from my notebook, as an example.
So, I assume the problem is on the galaxy tab.
galaxy tab can connect to other wireless networks, but can "see" the one provided by wifi theter.
Anyone knows I to solve this?
thanks in advance for any help

The reason FoxFi shuts off your 3g connection is because it turns on the wifi radio to use for hotspot access around the security in your phone.
As far as Wifi Tether goes, are you broadcasting in adhoc mode?
I just gave this app a go. It looks like everything setup just fine on the phone but when I try to connect with my windows 7 laptop I get a "cannot connect" error. I think it's trying to use an ad hoc connection type. I don't think ICS supports ad hoc tethering. Could someone with a gingerbread phone could give this a try? If it works on a gingerbread phone then it's probably an ad hoc issue.

I just made it work with GS3 via bluetooth, hotspot mode did not work for some reason.
Will do for VPN for now, since stock GC3 wont work with IPSEC alone...

It's not the hardware on your S4, it's just ATT doesn't have the protocol enabled. If you have weak or no signal at home or office, you can try Google voice and pair it with Talkatone or GrooveIP or Mo+ etc etc...

Let me elaborate. The feature is specific to genuine T-Mobile subscribers (MVNOs like SimpleMobile and Family Mobile are out of luck). The program IIRC checks against the SIM to make sure it's genuine T-Mobile, and IIRC it connects to servers specific to T-Mobile at the backend.

We have winners! A T-Mobile customer with an AT&T S4 can most assuredly use a T-Mobile TW ROM and take full advantage of WiFi calling... Otherwise, no.
Basically repeating what other said... You CAN, but ONLY if you flash a T-Mobile TW based rom.
If you were expecting to use Wifi calling with an AT&T based rom, the short, medium and long answer is.... No.

If you meet all the previously mentioned qualifications for WiFi calling to work then yes it will most assuredly work. As far as the Note 3 question goes; try browsing the Note 3 forums... they'd be much better equipped to give you a correct answer than in the S4 forum. I'm sure the topic has been discussed over there and a simple search would point you in the right direction.

I disagree here. I had an HTC thunderbolt before the S4 and it took them forever to get 4.0 eventhough every similar phone already had it on other carriers.
With all the custom ROMs out, really? A *lack* of an update is reason to switch carriers?
Obviously, I'm not putting enough weight on my ROM when picking a carrier.
