Hey guys, I just switched to Verizon, got a Nexus, and rooted it. I was wondering just how easy is it to get caught by Verizon if I use the wireless tether apk? I'd appreciate it if someone posted their experiences with it. Thanks!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I use it all the time and have never got an email in the past 2 years, and I use at least 5-10GB a month.
this is the first time i use it constantly . because of the 4G speeds. i havent got a email or a text from them.
before i had it with my incredible but hardly use it, because of the slow 3G speeds.
Alright thanks! This is actually my first experience with android on a phone (other one was CM7 on my Nook Color) and I had just always read that you get lots of sudden charges so its good to have peace of mind.
Sorry for the bump, I've got one more question. Wireless tether seems to give me a much higher data usage reading than the settings app in ICS. After using it a bit it said I used 500kb while the settings app reported that I used 1 KB. Is there a reason for this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
If you're really stupid about how much you use it, they will catch on but if you're smart about it you can get away with it a lot.

noob here . I looked around here , but cant find much about installing all these different things. Id like wifi tethering to work . I only need it very seldom but would like to have it when i do . How do you install?
thanks , Dan

I am using pre111 and its working fine. Are you rooted?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yeah im rooted and running ARHD 2.1.2
I will try pre111. Thanks.
Hmm well I am just running stock 4.0.2 and it runs fine. The only issue is after I turn off wireless tethering the phone crashes. A restart fixes it though.

Hmm that's odd. Maybe some incompatibility with ARHD? Did you move to pre111?
On a side note, how is ARHD compared to stock?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I did go to pre111 and got the exact same errors
It could be ARHD related as i thought this also but dont feel like flashing back to stock right now
As for stock v/s ARHD comparison, I wasnt on stock long enough to compare
Alright, so I just flashed ARHD onto my Nexus and wifi tether is still working fine. Did you give it super user permissions?

Of course i did silly
Im running radio 4.03
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403133
Wifi Tether will not work with 4.03. I consistantly get errors in the startup log. Even worse, when on wifi at home im fine and my signal icons are blue meaning im connected to google servers. But if i disconnect off wifi and use my cellular 3G connection my signal icons stay grey and will not turn blue.
I had to flash back to 4.02 and instantly got blue icons on 3G and now my Wifi Tether works.

Noticed on a friends evo 4G this past week that he had a new evo 4G radio 2.15.00.12.19 listed. Anyone try it yet on the Inc? Does anything need to be done to it to use it on the Inc?
Thanks!

I am running it now. Seems the same as 2.15.10.07.07, signal no better and no worse for me, however it just depends what works best in your area. Nothing needs to be done to it, i have already converted it for the inc.

That is strange that it works for some but not others. I am still using it, and it works great here in the NW Indiana / Chicagoland area. It dosent work any better or worse than 2.15.10.07.07, but it definitley works. Could you guys post your general area, it would be interesting to see where it works and where it doesent.
I'm not sure if it's working better for me or not, I didn't really take note of my signal before.
I live in the general Akron, OH area. And I'm getting around 85~dBm when I'm actually holding my phone.

Link back up, my server went down.
So I loaded this on my phone. Works wonderfuly. Much better then 08.08 was about the same as 07.07. One thing I noticed, and I bet its placebo but, my screen is responding better. No more lag. Plus the 4 errors I normally get on boot from logcat are gone! I'm kinda overly excited but I can't believe they are gone. I have been bug hunting them for weeks now. Even cm was stumped.
Sent from my sexy assistant. (AMOLED HTC Incredible)
Works fine in Milwaukee. Coming from 7.07, signal is about the same, -74to -85. Will road test it tomorrow and see. Noticed GPS locked in 5 seconds to 3 meters, though I don't know if the radio has anything to do with that.
I found that wireless tethering apps would not work with CM based Roms and it was driving me crazy because I like AOSP so I found a fix finally. This is for people that DONT LIKE THE HOTSPOT and use wireless tethering apps like barnacle.
1. Flash a sense rom.
2. With a root file explorer of your choice navigate to etc/firmware.
3. Copy fw_bcm4329_apsta.bin and fw_bcm4329.bin. save these in a location on the SD card.
4. Flash you favorite AOSP rom.
5. Find the two files on your SD card and copy them.
6. Paste BOTH of the files in etc/firmware. Change the permissions to (see screenshot)

8. Fire up your favorite tethering app and enjoy.

Hmm... I thought more people would be interested in this. I guess others don't have issues with the hotspot like I do.

Most roms have built in wireless tethering without the need of an app. For instance, CM7 or CM9 has the tethering options under wireless networks.
Don't reply if you didn't read the OP. I don't like the built in feature because it doesn't work as well. This is for people that want to use wireless tether apps and NOT the hotspot.

Very Helpful
disconnecktie I love you. I've been stuck on stock rom for 8 months or so. I removed bloatware of course. I couldn't get wireless tether to work on any other rom. And that is the main reason that I rooted. Now I'm rocking cm9 bracketkang with working tether. Ics beats the @#$% out of sense 2.0. Thanks again. Any recommendations on other roms that I should check out?

Just curious, but why don't you like the built in tether in CM7 and CM9???? I have had zero issues with them and they seem to work a ton better than barnacle did when I tried it..Just wondering
I don't use these illegitimate apps for illegal tethering. I don't want to be stuck paying 30 a month for the next year of my life because Verizon found out

I agree they work better than barnacle but wireless tether for root users is my favorite. I like that it tells you how much you have used each session.

Thanks for that knipp. It's ok though. I'm not promoting the use of illegal tethering at all. If someone else is and they are looking for a fix for that app then this is a guide for them. If anyone has a problem with people that use the app then make a thread and complain about it to those that care because I don't really give a damn.

Omg!The dev here is trying to help out people, and instead of thanking him you guys are simply complaining?Come on its common sense that its for guys who have got problem with inbuilt tether and obviously who are using 3rd party apps for the same!!If its not for you, just ignore the thread instead of trolling.
Btw.i have a rezound on a de-sensed Rom -Can i use the fix?

I've tried a few JB ROMs for the VZW Galaxy Nexus and I haven't been able tether with any app, yet. In Wireless Tether, I keep getting an error that says WiFi failed to start.
I use the built-in Portable Wi-Fi hotspot feature, and it works perfectly.

yeah i think the wi fi tethering apps haven't been updated yet to work with the JB Rom(s) yet. The built in tether has never worked for me in ICS Roms and JB Rom.
I keep 3-4 Roms backed up all the time and if I really need wi-fi tethering really bad, I just restore Gummy or Aokp! If the Google Now wasn't the part of JB, I would've simply waited for Aokp or Gummy to creat a JB Rom!

there is a lot of things that Sprint servers check that only work if you are using sprints data connection. sprint tv for example doesn't work in Wifi even if you are with Sprint because it checks with Sprint thought it's network and not through the internet
