[Q] Battery at 0% when inserting replacement - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I've bought 2 Desire HD batteries (1210mah IIRC) and they work just fine on their own.
I can't manage to keep alive my phone after replacing one with another (charged), though, since the phone believes the battery charge is 0%. I know this is an error, since I can always plug the phone and check with an handful of apps.
This actually means that I can't switch from a dying battery to a charged one if I don't have access to a USB socket!
If I have to guess, I'd say the phone is not deleting batterystats when I swap the batteries.
Any idea? I'm running CodefireX JB nightlies.

Have been noticing the same behavior! Would like to know if anyone knows a solution..

Actually I did found a workaround, kinda. After a first boot-automatic shutdown, this morning I booted in recovery, then I wiped batterystats (although I don't know how that could help). After a reboot it shat down again automatically, and then it worked.
I'd guess it just take some time to read the correct mV value. So basically you could leave your phone sitting in recovery for like 5 minutes and then reboot. Or, you know, just fratically reboot until it works. That's my plan anyway.
Meh.

That is a known issue with batteries other than the original HTC battery. Since I'm used to have a sensation battery, I ought to bring along portable charger whenever I can in long trips. There is no other way other than plugging it in charger or just hoping that it would boot up with a lil bit of luck.

It makes sense. I had to reboot the phone after a full charge (unrelated issue) and then it happened again. I tried my luck; after three reboots the phone got it right. It should be enough having the phone sitting in recovery mode for like 5 minutes. When it shows a valid percentage it's good to go!

This happens to me almost daily. All you have to do is restart the phone maybe twice... nothing else. I used to think i had to plug it in as well. Nope just restart it, if it shows 0 percent again it'll die, restart again, bam 100 percent.

[Q] Battery draining after powering down

Hello All
Im powering down my phone at night (quick boot enabled) & when i wake up in the morning the battery is completely drained. There is normally at least half a charge left before i power down.
This has only just happened the past few days. The phone is around 2 months old.
Any ideas ? Has my battery become faulty ? Should i return the phone ?
Thanks.
Sounds like a hardware fault probably the battery. How did you charge the phone normally?
Try taking the battery out, see if it loses charge after same amount of time.

I agree with sengork.
Powerdown should use only a few microamps.

I normally charge via the mains, occasionally via usb.
Its only the last couple days its happened.
Will try taking the battery out at night & see what happens.

How i charge my phone varies - sometimes i will charge via the mains with either the phone still on or off at night, sometimes with the phone on via usb. I've never had a problem with regards to charging the battery.
I always turn the phone off at night (with quick boot enabled as i said) but the past 2 days, with the battery at least half full, the battery has completely drained by the morning.
Hi,
Try with and without fast boot and see if you yield any different results, I would tend to leave fast boot off if your leaving it off for a prolonged amount of time as the phone doesn't completely shut down.
Also there could be an app draining it too, so u could get autostarts and kill any unwanted apps from starting up when certain criteria are met, like when you switch your screen off, some apps are activated, i know kakao chat does that, even if it doesn't help the prob it's still a good app to have to kill apps from starting when you don't want them.
Let us know how u get on.
PS: Are you using an overvolted kernel ? Maybe knock it down to stock to see if that helps, just to test and then knock it back up when you know what the problem is.
This happened to me on my old phone. Turned out to be a problem with a torn USB cable
Well, took the battery out last night before bed with half power remaining & this morning...re inserted battery & no change at all - so i guess the battery is not faulty.
I am planning on turning off fast boot tonight, powering down the phone & see'ing what sort of state the battery is in tomorrow morning.
Thanks all for the replies so far.

I was having almost the exact same problem. Phone seemed to drain about 30 - 40 % overnight ( with phone off - fastboot on ).
Anyway I turned off Fastboot and switched off the phone and went to bed last night with about 20% battery and woke up this morning and still had 20%.
I'm not sure how Fastboot is supposed to work but turning it off seems to have solved the problem. It's not really a big loss anyway.
Thanks.
Interesting thread.
What are the benefits of fastboot anyway?
I never had it on my Hero and haven't tired it on my DHD as I've been too busy flashing ROMs since I got it!
Where can I switch of fast boot? I'm on stock rom 1.72. Searched my phone but no luck in finding it...

Other than stating the obvious ( i.e. the phone boots faster ) I don't think there is any other advantage. I think it is sort of similar to putting your computer ( if you are using Windows ) into Hibernate rather than shutting down completely.
Anyway there obviously was some sort of conflict with another app as a friend ( and many other users I'm sure ) with a Desire HD uses Fastboot without any overnight battery drain. Anyway I can live without it ( didn't have it on my last phone - a Motorola Milestone ).
It is odd that the battery drained more when the phone was off overnight than it would have done being left on overnight ( just with the screen off doing nothing ).
Anyway as I said - no big deal - and I certainly can't be bothered to uninstall each app one by one until I find the one responsable.
Cheers.
Haha, yeah a faster boot time was the obvious one but I was wondering if that was all.
I have it unticked anyway, and very rarely ever turn my phone off.
Anyway, I hope you manage to fix your problem

Thanks - as I said above turning off Fastboot seems to have fixed the issue for me. I'm too lazy (!) to find out what about leaving Fastboot on caused the battery drain but as it is a feature I can live without I'll just live with the mystery!!
Cheers.

Battery charge indicator 2.3.5 upgrade problem
Hello everyone. This is my first time come to xda-developers form.I'm from china.
Yesterday I update my wildfire S(China mainland Edition)to 2.3.5+Sense3.0 lockscreen(Taiwan Edition)'s ROM.
I charge my bbttery yesterday evening.I turn off my phone.
When charge compalate.I found that the LED light didn't change green. It was still orange.
Why?How to solve it?
PS:Maybe my post have some Grammar problem。I hope that you can Bear with it.
Try factory reset see if it helps.
Backup important information and personal stuff first.
Just try the procedure of taking the battery out, sim card, micro sd etc etc and see if that works...
are you using the stock battery?
i used to notice with my (so called) extended battery 2430mah Gold battery, the software would say it was 100% charge, but it stayed orange for around another hour or two, then eventually turned green...i assume this is because the phone software had misjudged the charge level...so although it THOUGHT it was 100% full, it was actually still charging?
so if you have changed the battery at all, leave it charging for a bit longer (only an hour or so) and see if it goes out?
should be safe, as the batteries themselves usually have an auto shut off safety to stop them from being over-charged.
I get the exact same on ALL custom ROMs, never on Stock though, would love a fix!

Since I unlocked my phone's bootloader, rooted and installed custom recovery I have the same problem too.
If I charge the battery with the phone turned on, the led turns green at 100% and everything is fine.
If I charge the battery with the phone off, the led stays orange forever even when I disconnect the charger. Then I have to remove the battery and insert it again so that the led turns off. If I wait enough time charging the battery reaches 100%.
This is a strange sympton that only started with the rooting/recovery flashing process.
Oh and BTW the way, I use stock battery but now I'm waiting for the arrival of two batteries I ordered on eBay.
One is a Li-Ion 1500 mAh and the other a Li-Polymer 2430 mAh.
Will see if the same happens when they arrive but I'm almost 100% sure this has something to do with the bootloader unlocking process.
Does anybody know how to fix this? I would really appreciate it.

Same as, pain in the arse!
Great news! At least on my phone this problem is gone.
You wonder how? Simply by updating recovery to v5.0.2.8 from ROM Manager.
I almost didn't notice it it but a few hours ago I plugged my phone to the charger while still on. After finishing my work I turned it off (no fastboot).
In the meanwhile I needed to use my phone far from the wall plug and disconnected the usb charger cable.
My gesture was to immediately remove back cover to remove the battery but fortunately I noticed the orange led went off.
So I decided to plug it again and wait for the charge to complete and for the green led. It did!
So run to the Market, download ROM Manager and let it update your recovery to the latest version.
I hope this annoying pest won't bother you no more.

[Q] Battery doesn't seem to charge

Hi there
Had the overheating problem. Unrooted, S-ON, Stock Hboot restored, sent it back. Mainboard replaced. Received back 'fixed' within 4 days. Excellent service. Stock Froyo back. Rooted using Revolutionary and InsertCoin reinstalled. Backup restored. Everything's great.
Come the evening, plug the phone in to charge. Orange LED comes on, as normal. However, the battery level seems to decrease.
Wipe battery stats.
Battery level increases, temporarily. Further investigations seem to indicate that USB charging is ok (incredibly slow, but does increase battery level) whereas AC charging doesn't work at all. The orange LED does come on and the lightening bolt is visible inside the battery widget but the level only goes down (as you'd expect if it wasn't plugged in).
Tried updating to the latest version (okay so I got InsertCoin 1.1.3, loved it so stuck with it) i.e. 1.1.4 with a new kernel. No joy.
So what's going on? Is it a software problem (is this possible?) or have HTC forgotten to plug a connection (again is this possible, as the phone charges via USB but not AC?!)?
The battery is fine (charged it in another Desire with my charger which, thus, must also be fine).
Either way any help would be much appreciated. I really don't want to have to send my phone back, again but if this is the only solution, obviously this is what I'll do.
Apologies if I've missed this problem in the threads, I've tried to find it but no joy.
Further info
Ok so I've been charging the phone overnight. Nothing happened (it went from 45% to 35%)(this was via USB).
I've now wiped the battery stats in recovery and it now charges (again only via USB).
I'm not going to send it back until next week so if anyone has any ideas before then, feel free to share.
Thanks

Ok so I've got the phone back. They have stated there was no hardware issue and the phone charged fine with their battery and charger. So, still unrooted, I connect my phone up to a charger.
It begins to charge! Excellent.
S-OFF, flash Superuser, flash Insertcoin, restore backup. Problem returns?! Honestly, I can't believe it. Does anyone know how this could possibly be a software issue?
I'm running Insertcoin stable v1.1.4 with snq's most up-to-date kernel (for insertcoin) 2.6.35.8 -snq111118.
If anyone knows anything I can try just let me know. I'm totally stumped here.
Thanks in advance
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
Further Update
Further investigations (mainly trial and error) have resulted in the phone being able to charge via USB only (when the phone was unrooted, my claim of it being able to charge was actually it charging via USB).
I've tried also 3 different kernel's for my InsertCoin (all snq) but nothing has changed (I didn't expect it to, however I assumed if it is a software problem, it's the kernel).
So my phone is currently connected to the PC to charge. Obviously this isn't ideal.
As HTC claim there is no hardware issue (would they test the charge from AC and USB?) I'm reluctant to send it back. Again.
However, as the phone does not charge via AC even when it's off, it still makes me think there is a hardware issue.
Any suggestions as to what I can do would be most appreciated. Thanks
Did you try to put it back to stock and then charge it with ac charger? Or maybe your charger/ cable is broken? Did you already try another one? If that works, you shouldn't send it in again. If it didn't, blame HTC for not trying the wall charger.
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire
No I'm going to try that tonight. I have tried a friend's battery and charger and nothing (but my battery does charge via AC in his phone) so I'm still inclined to believe it's a hardware issue.
What if it does charge through AC when unrooted? What could possibly be wrong?! We'll see, I guess...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
So I unrooted the phone (used the GB update). It didn't charge via AC but did via USB. So I've sent it back (Monday) and have yet to hear when I'll be getting it back (when I sent the phone in first time, they replaced the mainboard and had it back to me within the working week).
Ah well, I just hope it's fixed this time. Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'll let you know what happens. I'm assuming they're just going to replace the mainboard to be honest. I can't see this going any other way (well I can, but I shudder to think what I'm going to do if they say nothing's wrong. Again.)
It's back!
I've just received the phone with a note that says "fully refurbished with new mainboard replacement".
Being confused by what exactly this meant I contacted HTC and low and behold they've replaced: the mainboard (I got this much), the power button, the volume buttons, the touch panel and the bezel. This list reads to me like: we've replaced the phone.
I've hooked it up to charge via AC and in 14 minutes, wait for it...
The phone IS charging! Can't say I'm hugely surprised at the fact that it was a hardware issue, but given the rigmarole I'm just happy it's fixed.
Once I've got it home and rooted it tonight, it'll be like a brand new phone. That's fully customised the way I like it. Can't wait.
Thanks all for suggestions, turns out 3 times is the charm...

[Q] Battery Problem - Fully charged but shows empty on my Inspire 4G

I can't seem to find any information on this issue.
I charge the battery fully on my external charger and then when I put it in my Inspire it shows red with no battery charge then shuts down. When I power it on with the usb plugged in then the battery shows full and I can unplug it. If I power it off then back on it then shows empty again, even if I quick plug in the usb. I have 3 backup batteries and this happens with 2 of them. All of the batteries worked fine until this started happening. I just rebooted with the usb plugged in and when I check the battery info on my ICS rom it shows 0%, charging (AC), 21s on battery. When I unplugged the usb and refreshed the battery info it now shows 99%, not charging, 3s on battery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, my son's Inspire does not have this issue with the same batteries that i use so it has to be related to my phone.
This happens on my phone rom, Melcheizedek v2.1 and on one of my Boot Manager roms, Lords ICS v 7.4.
Thanks!
I dont know if this will help.
Try using a different stable Gb rom. If problem persists, power off, pull the battery out, put back the same battery, power on. If it still happens, try cleaning the battery connectors. In the past week or so in either this section or the inspire 4g (either the general or Q&A) someone explained how to clean them.
Edit: does the same problem happen in recovery? My guess is yes, regardless if it's software or a hardware prob.

I will try a GB rom today. I just completely reformatted and re-installed Melchizedek - AOSP ICS booted my phone and battery shows red, no charge. Reboot with usb connected to AC and full charge shows then when i unplug still full charge. When i am in recovery it shows battery --% for a few seconds then it changes to full.
Coffee still hasn't kicked in
In recovery it shows 100%. If you stay in recovery what happens?
Same problem? It discharges and then shuts down?
Can you use the battery cover from your sons cellphone?
Do you remember what you did when you first noticed the problem?
Insight to something that happened to me a few weeks back.
I was running a Gb miui rom, I installed a mod or something the device bootlooped. Erased everything, used my backup, but then the battery would discharge insanely fast. 3-5% per minute. From 80% it went down to 65%, rebooted, then it would show 76%. Wipped everything, installed a different stable rom, no apps whatsoever, same problem. I went into recovery, same issue in recovery, erased, (this part I'm a bit foggy) I believe the same thing happened in recovery with a formatted system.
Can't remember if I installed another rom or just went back to my backup.
Powered off the cell, swapped batteries with another phone, the issue was gone.
My assumption is that by pulling out the battery it solved the problem.
In your case, you already pulled out and tried several batteries. But they work in your sons cell. However, with several batteries it is unlickly (the spelling for that just seems wrong for some reason) to be a battery (just ranting to see where my mind goes).
Still waiting to know what happens in recovery.
If it happens with different roms, Im assuming you full wiped. Especially if you are running one from the collective and lord. You probably know more than I do
Try using a different battery cover if you can, and also try booting your cell without the sd card.
Try them seperately to see if either one works.
Hope something I said works, or at least gives you ideas to try something else.
Edit: I just re-read your initial post. It happens with two out of your three batteries. That's a tough one.
Whats the difference between the batteries? Does your sons battery work on your cell?
You can disregard cleaning the connectors - probably.
Or clean the connectors on the bats and the cover. Or try your sons bat connector with those batteries.
Could you re-phrase your initial post along with everything that has happened and what you have tried?

When I boot into recovery it initially shows no charge for maybe 20 - 30 seconds and then shows full (or whatever level the battery really is). The battery level stays normal then and works perfectly fine all the while I am in recovery.
I just rebooted with the battery I was using all day, it was plugged into a usb ac at work until about 3.5 hours ago, and it rebooted with a normal battery level, I rebooted again and it was normal again. I booted this same battery in the morning and it showed no charge but now it works fine. I then rebooted with a second battery and again it booted fine with full charge. I put in a third battery, this was the one it first happened on, and it booted with no charge. I put back in the battery I had in all day and it booted with normal charge again. I checked the bad battery and the good battery and both have about 4.2 volts.
When it happened the first time it was only with 1 battery, that was about a week ago. I just got 2 new batteries in the mail and one worked fine and the second booted up showing no charge like the other one. That was 2 days ago, since then every battery seemed to do it until now, I just checked 5 batteries and only the first bad one and the one new one that was bad don't work, weird.
It seems like the bad battery screwed up something in my phone but it's hard to believe that whatever it was would survive a system format. Now it seems to be working fine...I don't like things that fix themselves...
Well, if you have the time let's try troubleshooting the issue with only the bad batteries (as long as if you believe it to be software related only).
Keep in mind that I'm trying to help figure this out, and to keep bumping this thread until someone more knowledgeable joins in.
If its software, remove the sd card, format everything. Power off, remove the battery, while the battery is out press and hold the power button (hoping the cell works something like a pc) for 30s. Then install - I don't know - any rom? Load a few basic apps you use/need. See what happens with the bad battery.
You did say the bad battery does work in another cell?

I don't believe it's software related, I reformatted and re-installed the rom I was using and still had the issue. I have been using the same rom for a while with no issues. I'll check the 'bad' batteries on my son's phone tomorrow.
Edit: Booted normal this morning again, I think I can close this issue for now. I am a bit uncomfortable with not finding the root cause but at least it ended in my favor. Thanks for your input!
You are welcome. My next step was going to be to link your issue in another thread. Good luck.

Try full wipe and reinstall ROM, if doesn't work flash another ROM. If doesn't work again, maybe it's problem whith battery controller, you would have to go to service centre
DHD
I had a similiar problem and it happened after i started playing with ICS DHD Roms. I downloaded a stock WWE sense 2 rom and flashed that. I then flashes the latest Stock WWE 2.5 Sense rom and all is still ok. Dunno if the stock flashing (through exe from PC) it was unrooted though. Fixed it but its fine now. So maybe try that.
Perhaps this may help.

Thanks for sharing my post on the Inspire forums, Teichopsia.
I'm convinced that there's something in the non-sense ROMS that doesn't get the battery charge % correctly immediately after booting. I'm having the same symptoms as the original poster is having. Two of my batteries are after market and two are HTC. The generic ones have the problem of registering 0% on reboot after swapping the batteries in. If you have them on the charger they work fine and show 100% after about 30 seconds. If you reboot with the same battery it's fine until you change to a different one. The latest ICS Rom I'm using has the problem with any reboot, even if the same battery is in. If I'm using real HTC batteries this problem doesn't manifest itself on Cyanogenmod or AOSP ROMs.
EDIT: I should clarify that the after market batteries fail on any reboot without the charger with the latest ICS ROM I'm trying, but the HTC batteries are fine.
I've had success with booting into recovery mode and wiping battery stats. This is not a permanent fix but is useful when you don't have access to a charger and need to swap batteries.
The full procedure is this: with phone off hold power and vol down, select recovery, advanced, wipe battery stats, yes, go back, reboot system now.
Bad battery I think. Ik had the same problem with a brand new, original battery.
Charged it fully with external charger, booted phone with it but showed 0% juice....
I had to boot with the charger plugged in, and then after booting it went to 100%
Send the battery back because this was not normal, recieved a new one and didn't have the problem.
btw I was on IceColdSandwich rom...
Im running ICS 4.0.4 aospX 1.0.0-MR1 on my HTC Inspire 4g with a Anker® 1600mAh Li-ion Battery For HTC Desire HD, Inspire 4G - White and had this problem initially.
The only way my phone would boot up was if it was plugged in, otherwise it would show a dead battery warning when the homescreen loaded, and then it would shutdown. If I booted it while plugged in, then disconnected the cable, then it would run off the battery just fine.
What I did to fix it was to shutdown the phone, take off the battery cover, removed the battery ( the Anker one), blew into the compartment to make sure there was nothing interfering with the connectors, wiped the battery's connectors with my finger, and then i replaced the Anker battery, pushed hard on it to make sure the connection was good, and booted the phone.
To my surprise, this actually seemed to fix the problem. Whatsmore, after I put the battery cover back in place, the phone continued to boot with no issue, meaning I did not have to push on the battery to make sure the nodes were connecting. I even shook the phone in my hand to see if this would loosen the battery connection, but it still booted fine.
I then took out the battery and replaced it to make sure it would still boot, and it did. Hope my solution works for you! Cheers!
CM is having issues on the One X with reported battery levels as well.

Galaxy Nexus only charges when connected to PC

My phone stopped charging from its regular wall charger this morning. Now when I plug it in it doesn't do anything. If I turn it off and plug it in the battery icon with the charging icon shows up then shows it charging, then it shows the charging icon again and the same thing keeps happening until the battery just dies. The only way I can get it to charge is if I plug it into usb port on my computer. Is there any solution?

The same exact same thing happened to me today! Very strange. I restarted about 4 times, and took out the battery etc. and it just started working.

It happens when u add few drops of water in charging port.. lol
Happened to me too ..
I used every trick vacuum, hair dryer, sun-light, heat etc. but didnt work
then I dipped my phone in 100 kg rice bag for 2 days .. lol
problem resolved !
I just started experiencing the same thing. Occasionally I can get it to charge, but usually it just sits there and dies. I haven't been able to test the pc charging, as I'm currently on vacation. This is pretty random, considering I've had the phone since launch day (Verizon), and have dropped it, etc in the past with no problems; then randomly it won't charge.
Had strange problems like this. Try bending the little tab in the charging port on your phone (carefully) away from the side. I haven't had a problem since.

Your charging brick or USB could be bad. Try different cords/chargers.

I've had similar issues.
Some background: It started just after I flashed the AUG 29 AOKP Jellybean nightly. It might just be a co-incidence but I saw a couple of people on rootzwiki who had a similar issue.
I wasn't charging at all then. Only when I was turned off. I was having driver issues with computers that had connected to the phone before.
I have since reset it back to stock JB and the charging from the charger seems to have been fixed. Instead my pogo pin charging is a bit iffy. It works sometimes but not always.........
Well, I spoke too soon! NOT CHARGING from the wall again. When phone is shutdown, it charges. In Android, it doesn't.
Could you tell us what you have done so far? Any solutions that you tried but didn't work?
Have you tried:
-different battery?
-using different cable or the charger?
-straightening the metal part of the port?
-cleaning the port with alcohol?
These are the known solutions for most of the Gnex port problem. If you haven't tried already, please do so. If you're still having problem with it, tell us.
Solution
This is not a randome issue... Happened to me too only ONCE and never again
Solution
Let the phone battery die out completely and then charge a bit and boot into CWM recovery. Reset battery stats and you are good to go.:good: Or you can even try reseting battery stats without complete discharge. I havent tried the later since had this problem only once. I'm not a developer but my theory is that there is some embeded software that determines power supply and due to some reason it got corrupted.
Hit THANKS if I helped
Thank you everyone for your help. Really appreciate it. So I know I didn't get it wet. And I changed chargers and batteries to no avail. Then I tried what the last post said, to wipe battery stats. I did that and restarted. Did it again because first time didn't do anything. Now its charging fine. Great relief

I'm experiencing this problem now. But I think it's because I was messing around with 'Fast Charge' settings in my AOKP Milestone 1 ROM controls without really knowing what any of it meant. I'll try to wipe battery stats and do a few reboots. I'll let you guys know.

Same problem for me now too! =\ I'm using cyanogenmod though. I reset battery stats, formatted and factory reset the thing and nothing. Also tried a few different cables. It's also no longer being recognized when connected to PC.
EDIT: Looks like the USB connector on the device was slightly off center. Bent it up a bit and it seems to be working as normal now.

Battery stats should be in advanced option in CMW
