I was under that assumption that the person was asking about automatically receiving OTAs via System Updates not having to manually flash them/sideload them...Am I wrong here?

yes you have to be completely stock.. and like i said i am not sure but i think cwm shouldnt matter
Didn't get the OTA yet, kept clearing framework data and checking for system updates, but I'm on mobile data, which might have an impact on this. (German carrier) I guess I'll wait until I'm home and try it again. Worst case would be francos kernel preventing me from getting the OTA, or root, but that's not the problem with OTA RootKeeper. Thanks for your answers.

you're still partially wrong.
you can receive the OTA, but it will not install automatically if you have a custom recovery. you can then boot into the custom recovery and flash it

I read his post literally. "Can I install an OTA when not using stock recovery and being rooted?" would have been the right question. My answer/comprehension of the message would have been totally different.
And as for passing judgement, it would still be best for people to redirect others to existing threads than feed another thread like the dozens we got like it. It's the hard truth: people don't have patience. To search, to learn.

After searching the forum and reading many posts, it still is not clear to me if the 2.3.4 OTA (I'm being prompted for 4.06) will break S-Off.
When I rooted my Incredible using Unrevoked3, the custom recovery wasn't out yet or otherwise wasn't included. I believe that I am still running stock recovery (haven't flashed any ROMs).
If I do this update will I lose S-Off or lose root?
I know this topic seems redundant, but I haven't read a clear answer.
Thanks.
I'm wondering the same thing.
I just got the last issue on skyraider 4.3 working again, and I don't really want to start over.

What if your phone is only rooted? If you update will you lose root? I don't actually own a dinc but my friends wife keeps asking me if she should update and if she will lose root if she does. Also if she has to reroot after the update do you know of any issues doing so?
I'm having enough issues trying to get everything working with rooting my htc vivid
Thanks for any help.

If the OTA actually can be accepted with your custom recovery (debatable), you would lose root IMO. I think what Stang means is that if you're s-off, you can reflash clockwork and superuser, and reaquire root easily. So it doesn't break your ability to root again.
My daughter downloaded the latest 2.3.4 and now has issues with the memory low icon. Can I downgrade to Froyo? She's finally going to let me root her phone(that I pay for).
Sorry if this isn't the correct thread for this question.

This was my experience. I managed to cp it to my SD card, before it deleted itself, and now I have to rack up a 10 post count so I can let the developers in the developer forum know I have it ready to send to whomever wants to root it and re-released it.

I'm still on stock 4.04 ICS
I want to root/unlock and load up MIUI/AKOP
Can someone give me a small tutorial on how to do this? I see there's a toolkit but i'm confused on what to do because of JB dropping.

it works... but when it fails, it fails hard. and then you dont know where it failed or what it even did.
i personally will not help if you use the toolkit and things go wrong... others will still help.
It's actually very easy on this device. Since you know you are wanting to install a new ROM you don't even need to root. The hardest part is installing the ADB usb drivers and making sure they work correctly. There are basically 3 things you need to do.
1.) Install ADB and the ADB usb drivers
2.) Unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery (ClockworkMod is the most popular)
3.) Flash a new ROM
You can do steps 1-2 by following this guide up to the recovery install step. Then for step 3 download the ROM of your choice into the internal sd and boot into CWM recovery and flash.
Stupid question, can i do all of this if the phone isnt activated? My sim card should be here in the mail tomorrow

as far as your other question, you can flash the radios and bootloaders via CWM.

I think what Mach3.2 was trying to say is that if you use a toolkit:
1) you don't learn anything;
2) if something doesn't work, it is very difficult to figure out what, as the toolkit hides everything from you;
3) if you follow a step-by-step, you see EXACTLY what goes wrong where.

Hey XDA community,
i have recently rooted my HTC Desire 816/Virgin mobile
Currently running stock ROM
Adroid version: 4.4.2
HTC Sense version: 6.0
Software Version: 1.13.652.1
I keep getting the software update pop up for version 1.50.652.3 which i previously had before rooting
as i try update it the update is aborted
Is there anyway that i can update it and also keep my root access?
Ive tried many different ROMs although most of them seem to be inefficient as either the calling, data, or text messaging doesn't work, i would rather stick to the stock ROM until fully functional ROMs are out there.
only thing your suppose to do is just install the root, relock bootloader and flash recovery hope will work won't get aborted.....

But just because this is a Q&A thread, doesn't mean they should disregard any other way of getting information themselves.
Why should someone else have to take time out if there day to get the link, and give it to this person, when as I said, they can Google it.
But with that being said, I'm sorry you saw rudeness in those 3 words, next time I'll try to be more considerate.
