so yesterday i lost my phone and i gave my imei number to the police for tracking but i'm confused if my imei number is the same or not
i have flashed many different android versions so just want to be sure if flashing changes the imei number as well
:i tried searching other threads but still i'm confused so opened a new thread:
IMEI stays the same regardless of firmware or ROM,once it's reported stolen I think it can be blocked rendering it a real brick.
Install android lost from the play store, read the instructions and try to activate it via sms, see if you can track it like that.

The only devices that can have IMEI changes through flashing ROMs is Samsung devices. A lot of Nexus S devices had that problem.
But in short....
No your IMEI will be the same unless you illegally changed it yourself or they have. Which IMO is massively highly unlikely

mate how can i install the app when i don't have my phone.
ps: i had avast , and i send some messages but don't know if it really did something or not. was thinking of contacting the developer.
if someone have knowledge of avast anti-theft features , i have some queries:silly:
My Xperia Ray was also stolen on 28 th may during my exams, And I got back my phone bcoz of avast anti theft, My phone was rooted at that time, and I never tested it before, on 2nd and 3rd July I started getting msgs, from that no. Which thief was using, like location, SIM Id etc which was useful, I got 3 phone numbers.. Then I gave it to the police, they were very helpful,as I already lodged the FIR of stolen phone that day!! They found my phone on 14th July!!
Avast is best anti theft for rooted phone.. Don't worry ur phone will come back 2 u...

You can install any program on your phone from computer as long as it's still on and using ur Gmail account.

If you get the phone back and it is blocked due to the fact it was reported stolen, don't worry! There is software that can reverse it, but it will only be used if you can prove the phone is definitely yours i.e receipt, box etc.Anybody caught using this software knowingly unblocking stolen phones will be heavily fined/prison,but in your case I'm sure they will be happy to.

it just keeps getting better and better you really made me happy. my phone was rooted and i activated the same thing in avast. but one thing. avast was present in phone memory because i made it hard reset proof via rooting but i didn't have the application installed ( i reset the software but it was present in phone memory for sure ). so does this mean avast is still activated ?
and i'm hoping the same:fingers-crossed: cheers mate.

You can launch an app to be installed on your phone from your googleplay. When the thief uses wi-fi or any kind of internet data the app will install itself...
NOTE! This will happen ONLY if your phone is still linked to your google account. If the thief removed your account and put his, then there is nothing you can do in that respect...
Best regards,
Manu
Yes, Avast anti theft Part of app will still be present on your phone, it behaves like a system app on rooted phone, so it can't be easily uninstalled.. And it also disables the usb debugging automatically when SIM changes,..So it Can't be updated via PC comp..... Just wait whenever somebody puts Any SIM card u will be notify...

i received 2 messages gave the number to police just now. and the SI will call me tomorrow with more updates.

To bad that carriers rarely lock down reported IMEI's. Usually has to involve request by the police. They figure that as long as its an active sim in the phone, theyre making money anyways.. and we all know they love selling new phones to extend contracts (here in canada anyways). I used to work for rogers, seen it all to many times (saying they dont have the ability to ban the IMEI when the actually do). Here they reserve the capability of banning IMEI's for phones that are stolen during shipment to one of the carriers stores.

I work at a AT&T retailer and I have a customer who bought one for his ~14 year old son Friday night. I set up his Google account and wrote down the credentials for him to remember.
He came in today and was stuck at the lock screen you get after too many login attempts. It asked for either the secret question or Google account information. I used the paper I wrote with his login info and entered it in, it didn't work. I go to the secret question part and it asks for his mothers maiden name which I don't recall ever setting up...in either case the answer didn't work. I believe a factory reset will work but I don't know how without being able to go into settings. Is there a button combo I can hold down when booting to boot into some sort of system manager that would allow a reset?

No the phone is not stolen. If it was stolen I would just hook it up to a PC and wipe it that way but I can't wipe it via my computers at work which is why I am asking how to wipe it from the handset. I myself have a galaxy s2. If you guys don't want to help me because you think its stolen then fine I respect that, I was just trying to save the customer some headache and money cause I don't want to charge him a restocking fee because the phones not defective his son just messed it up.

Do you not have computer software for this? when i worked at o2 uk we had software called Carex (o2 customer care exchange). This had online manuals, Faq's and troubleshooting guides.. Either way you can just use flashtool to flash it back to stock
wotanserver.com might be your best bet, you'll have to find the right firmware though. Here's the site:

No we don't. We aren't a COR store, our computers are ****, and the way they are set up we cannot install anything on them. I don't work today, but I'll just bring my laptop in Monday and wipe it that way if he doesn't just say f it and return it today.
I myself am personally still new to android, and I've been looking up some stuff on rooting my sgs2 but am not quite there. So I don't want to get into flashing roms and all that because I'm not anywhere near being able to do that comfortably.
Any of ya'll would be lucky to get me as your salesperson, when I walk into other stores, I cannot believe how dumb and clueless the sales reps are. I know my ****, but even I don't know everything...but I have the decency to go look up the correct answer instead of flat-out lying & bs'ing.

All android phones are diffrent, every make HTC/Samsung/Sony/etc have there own partition structure, so although rooting/modding diffrent models of the same brand of phone is simlar, going from one make to another is quite diffrent By the way, sorry i called you a thief before. But you can never be too sure on the internet, people will say anything to get what they want
You could try this link: http://matthewhollander.com/locked-out-of-your-android-phone/
Also, I agree with jonnyredcorn, in my experience, customer service in the US normally consists of trained monkeys who parrot corporate lines without actually knowing what it means. I'm pretty sure I could walk into a verizon store (my provider) and ask anybody working there what adb is, or what a script is and be met with only blank stares.
So in short, thank AT&T guy for actually caring about what you do, you're one of few.

Isn't just there a way to disable this annoying feature!?!?
My kids/friends often play with my phone and lock it, I'm using two-step verification, and have to regenerate an app-specific pwd.
I don't mind ppl trying to hack my pattern zillion times and it shouldn't lock down.
This feature sucks my soul out! Hell I hate it!
Any way to disable this nasty "feature" will be appreciate.

not best than cerberus.but who took the phones,if has a little conoscence about android,in a minute can take down also cerberus or other app with a factory reset and flashin via fastboot.
i purchased the license of cerberus and always have the 3 options enabled in gps settings to have cerberus fully working, but Despite this, however, do not feel comfortable and I always try to hold it below the most possibile.i'msorry for the theft, not one but 2,the worst scenario, I hope you rediscover them.

Thanks for all your replies peeps .. I was just a bit too slack with security, I used Lookout for a while, but it was playing up so I binned it . when the devices went missing I think we discovered them within 30-40 mins and pushed AndroidLost to both devices, but it took ages to register, then sent nothing back, just wish I had replaced Lookout, and above all that I had simply moved them from the Boardroom to the Office I was working in, then this would not have happened - a little good news - the police are reviewing some CCTV footage from the Foyer, there is no way the scumbag could have avoided the main entrance, so it might lead to something (everything crossed) :-\

What is [gutted] is that a new rom or something?
I am on stock JB rom and its rooted now when i install avast anti theft feature then it gives me two type of root installation.
1. Direct Write Method - Will directly try to write to the system partition. DOES NOT WORK ON NAND PROTECTED DEVICES.
2. Recovery Image Method - Will generate an UPDATE.ZIP file. Only needed for NAND protected devices REQUIRES CUSTOM RECOVERY IMAGE.
Now anyone explain me what is mean by both type of installation and which one is best ?

I'm not sure if it's the best so I don't want to spread misinformation but I actually bought this app. It's the only app I ever paid for. I installed using the disguised method so apparently it even sticks around even if you do a complete factory reset. I paid for one license which allows you to register multiple phones (I think 4 or 8 or something) and all tests have passed that I've tried with it on both of my phones.
Maybe someone with more knowledge can recommend a better one because if there is, I'd get it.
I wouldn't recommend Prey. Prey is the Razer of antitheft apps--all advertising and nothing else.

My friend's Nexus 4 was stolen last week. A couple of days before, I had installed Cerberus on it. It wasn't rooted, so some of the features weren't available.
Anyway, for about a week, I wasn't getting any info from Cerberus. Then, a couple of days ago, I got a text message saying that an unauthorized SIM was in the phone. I guess the thieves had finally turned on the phone. I was able to lock the phone with a new code, get GPS tracking, call and SMS logs, record audio and video, and get pics of the thief. In addition, it sent me the SIM card info for the thief. It was on Friday night, so I couldn't get the info to the detective who has the case, but tomorrow I will send that info.
Cerberus did what they said it would do (basically give me a chance at getting the phone back). Hopefully with all of the info I have now, we will be able to recover the phone. I'll let you know if I get the phone back.

That did not fix the problem though, still will not reactivate itself nor stop saying that Im on this Chameleon Network and not in the USA.

Yeah I already tried all those fixes with no luck.
Im basically fine with it saying Chameleon Network, really just want my phone to stop thinking that I am in Korea nor letting me reactivate my phone.
Even running the LG Mobile Support tool right now, but it just gets stuck at 4% on the S/W Upgrade.

Sounds like corrupted efs ... Try the efs fix and if it doesn't work go back to stock and take it in ...

Well I have it fully unrooted and back to stock. Just cant figure out the Chameleon thing, it is actually stopping me from reactivating my phone. I have attached some screenshots so you all get a better idea of what Im talking about.

With both TWRP and FreeGee? Other option is autoprime thread about efs.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
All those methods are telling me I have to re-root my phone in order for the application to be able to restore my backs, which makes no sense to me.
Go to autoprime thread on how to zero out efs and then restore ...

U can use the hidden dialer codes to program ya min and ya number ....then exit out and it will restart and should then activate...

I only know a few of the dialer codes and not enough to reprogram myself.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to fix this. I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple months ago and I wasn't even rooted. My phone was working fine one minute, did a random reboot, then bam! When it came back on, everything was zeroed out and it wouldn't activate. Tried everything, finally took it to a Sprint repair facility and they could not get it to work either. They have no way of reprogramming the missing info either. They just ended up ordering me a replacement phone that didn't count against my insurance (no co-pay) because it was still under warranty and the issue was considered a product defect and not anything I did. I did some research and found out this has happened to others. Could be an issue with the original model phones. My first one was bought in January and they were released on October the previous year.

You're wrong on the programming .... U can program you're missing numbers and so can sprint ... We have a thread that tells u how ... If you're rooted it makes it that much easier.... Chameleon network itself isn't the problem...like I said before you have no telephone number programmed ,no prl loaded,no ESN loaded... Sprint can't activate ya phone over the air with out that stuff being programmed ... That's how it verifies who u r or else we all be in one big account together ....

Yes, you can program some of it which they tried. But the rest of the info they could not program (MEID, IMEI). You can say they (Sprint) can program all you want, maybe at the factory, but at the Sprint repair facility, they could not. I am merely telling you what they told me. Like I said, I had the EXACT same thing happen. And they just ended up ordering me a replacement phone.
*shrugs* Don't know what else to tell you. Just seems easier to take it to Sprint and get a replacement. If it dumped the info once, whats not to say it won't happen again.,
I've been through it to .... Yes u can program ya imei .... Idk ya keep insisting u can't .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2161498. There's the thread it walks u right through it ...idk what more u need ?

Please reread what I posted. As I stated, I am going by what Sprint told me. And THEY were not able to reprogram. I am not insisting anything, I am merely passing on info I received from Sprint support. Whether he wants to try and reprogram his phone is up to him and makes no difference to me. Just seems easier to take it to Sprint and get a replacement.
