Request: Rom testers needed! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

So I have a couple ROMs for the Sprint S3 that I have on XDA, problem is that after i test and upload, people say theres issues with it booting, etc and i didnt have any of those issues. So if you are willing to, would anyone be interested in being a tester for my ROMs. If you are, please read the conditions below and then PM to let me know.
The ROMs are BlackJelly ROM and ButterSmooth JB ROM
To be a Tester you must:
-Have a Sprint GS3
-Be willing to flash the roms to test
-and be able to deliver me information on bugs, etc via PM on XDA.
I will also put you in the OP of my ROM Threads

Sign me up...the more testers the better

Same here, wouldnt be a problem so can count me in. Only thing about me is i tend to be an extensive tester and extremely thorough lol almost like I an looking to find something wrong but in all reality i am just a person who wants stability with EVERYTHING inside of the ROM. *sarcasm about that being a problem *
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

ill do it.. Plus I see you had a epic 4g too, and I can't seem to find any roms I've completely fell in love with..

I will test as well. I downloaded and tried to flash Buttasmooth the other day. Let me know.

Do how is this going to happen

[Q] How to Port a ROM?

I was wondering if someone could give me a few basic tips on porting a rom. There arent very many roms for our phones but i would like to port a few that i like. (specifically from international GSII) Ill take any help, thanks
If you are looking to flash a rom, there are some detailed instructions in the Dev forum. In particular the thread for the Starburst rom. The first post has all the downloads you will need and there are some more detailed instructions on one of the posts from October 10th or 11th. Your device will of course need to be rooted in order for this to work.

Porting from international version is going to be really difficult due to the different radio's in it, and you would never get WiMax to work if you tried, even if you got it to boot up
my reccomendation would be to try grabbing a rom you like from another CDMA/WiMax Samsung device and try it, except the only one would be the Epic 4G, and the slideout keyboard orientation might ruin some stuff when porting....... so at this point, unfortunately, i dont think porting a rom is in anyones future for a little while at least til we get an AOSP kernel
cheers!

Well first off welcome to the Android Community. You've definetely started in the right place with XDA. Rooting an android phone and getting a custom ROM is easier than ever now. I would suggest first scrolling to the top of this forum and doing a lot of research and self education. There are several things you need to have a basic understanding of before flashing roms. Look at the most wanted topics thread, The official Jelly Bean General Discussion thread, Terminology for the newbies. Check out this post as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873873
In the end consider that Jelly Bean is still in the developmental stages and there can be bugs and workarounds to deal with. If you are new to Android, going with a solid custom ICS rom may be best for you so as not to spoil your Android experience.
Finally once you have made your decision head over to the Android rom development section ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1332 ) and look through the roms and choose the best one for your needs. Read the instructions and then read them again. Install exactly according to the directions in the thread from the rom you choose and enjoy ! Hope this helps a little at least. Happy Flashing ! :highfive:
The best thing to do is read, read, read. Knowledge is the best way to prevent accidents. The process for loading custom ROMs on this phone is simple but you'd be surprised how many "educated" people screw it up. Good luck.

I would reccomend Jedi mind trick or a darkside ics rom to flash first....very stable and very good battery life....also check out the sticky threads

And also if you need visual tutorials, just search on youtube and there's a bunch of videos showing yoi how to root, flash roms, etc. Always make sure what you are flashing is for this phone

I'll tell you a great ics rom which is called paranoid android. There is one by starskyrob in the development section. As far as JB in my opinion, the most stable is Paranoid android JB. I've flashed their latest rom and have had no sleeps of death or random reboots. This is going over 24 hours now and I did get 21 hours of battery for my first battery cycle. If you want more info send me a pm and ill link you some links. But yes read and watch a lot of youtube videos together ideas of what roms can do.

My 2 cents is that JB ROMs are not yet ready to act as daily drivers on the T989 for most of us.
The RRs and SODs continue as well as several other quirks.
I've been on and off the leading JB ROMs since mid-August and in most all cases I lost more features than I gained.
Thank God for the developers and early adopters who brave the bleeding edge for us all.
But I will wait in the safety of AOKP MS6 until I see something from Whitehawakx that's labeled "milestone" before I flash again.

All the ones I have tried so far I've had issues with, I would suggest something more stable like an ics for now. The JB roms look nice but they have issues with calls, random lockups and such.

Need a Tester for a Ported ATT Rom

I ported an ATT Rom to my phone and i want to release for everyone to use if they choose so. Its based off of Stock LK7 build 4.1.2 for ATT Note 2. JeremyAndroid is the Rom's creator and gave me permission to port his work to our phones. Thi rom is not for everyone its stripped hard and has alot of performance scripts on it he created. Really it gives you the freedom to have all the basic features and add what you choose. I dont take any credit for the rom or the hours spent creating it just porting it to our device. I have flashed it to my phone several times and Every thing seems good to go i just cannot test DATA ,GPS and Phone functions because of where im at at the moment. It comes with stock Tmo kernel and all of the kernels in our section should work with it . I personally only flashed perseus to it and had Zero issues. If you are intersted in testing it for me PM me as its almost finished uploading and i can send you the link. Only looking for 2 testers ,thanks in advance
Heres the link to his Rom in the ATT forum so you can check out whats missing and the features, the only thing i added back was Bluetooth because i use it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091715
Heres a screen shot
Got someone testing now and awaiting his report.

First, its not his epic fail... no one knows why it does it. Also, try anti-venom script. Worked for me. Also, please keep in mind, these guys do all this for free in their spare time... don't talk crap about them for something such as this. You kinda need to know why it does it before you can fix it.

Seems standard one would test to see if other roms could be flashed after the fact. That would seem a normal behavior of anyone who flashes roms. Wasn't insulting the guy personally, just his rom for screwing up half the boards phones. Lol. Also I think that script requires a pay app or something for flashing. Cwm doesn't work does it? Or did that change?

I'm facepalming so hard right now
I would also add that viper was beta tested for literally months before it was released. No genius tried flashing cm10 somewhere in there? Maybe the author didn't fail I don't know. Either that or the entire beta process is fail. Flashing other roms seems awfully basic. Just thought I'd add that to my last comment though. Again not insulting any dev personally. Just the rom. Months of beta testing to release a rom that screws up your phone is hard to describe in any way other than fail.

Actually, the script is something you flash in any recovery. Its rather simple. Also, I'd challenge you on whether its basic to test that as most of the people who were on the testing team weren't exactly worried about flashing other ROMs after viper... myself included. Whether you're insulting any person or not, you're still calling someone's work (something that shouldn't even be able to work on this phone no less) garbage is rather insulting no matter if you meant it as such or not. Also, check this: the ROM hasn't screwed up anyone's phone, and last I checked there's a disclaimer that says flash at your own risk. I was a beta tester and I'll have you know its one of the best testing groups I've been a part of and everything was covered. Absolutely none of the testing team encountered any issues that weren't soon fixed after. Any and all issues found through testing were eradicated. Only so much can be tested, however, and every device is different. In testing we encountered no problems whatsoever, and the fact that you would make statements such as this is appalling. Also keep in mind cm10 is currently running on a hacked up gingerbread kernel, also something that shouldn't technically work. I'm also typing this now from PACman which is part cm10 and not getting any hiccups. If you wish to continue this discussion, feel free to pm me and I'll even show you in detail the steps taken to get it all off the ground, but please do not reply here further cluttering the thread.
Also, in case you were wondering, if cwm doesn't work for flashing the script, you can always get the free version of the 4ext recovery app from 4ext.net…
Sorry dk for messing up your thread. Icons look sick bud.

Not a problem. Thanks for the info. I didn't even intend to talk about any of that at length. I think you went on about it more than I. Lol. I simply repeat it was tested for months to release a rom that messed your phone up so bad you couldn't install cm10. Seems a big oversight. I know all roms have disclaimers. Doesn't mean where one fails a failure can't be pointed out anyways. That's all I've done. Thanks for the info tho. I actually asked about it in the script thread and never heard anything definitive or the issue really discussed. I'm a simple user. Just do all flashing through cwm. Sorry this thread got off track. Didn't need to be highjacked like this. Agree. Sweet icons. Always fun to change them up!

I never make posts like this. This is usually nitsua or jizzy lately (haha).
I don't like you. From all the things I can gather about you through your posts, you are ignorant and ungrateful. I hate so much the things you've chosen to be. If you want something stable, don't root your phone. Nitsuj17, the "author" of Viper, has released quite a few ROMs for this phone despite moving on to greener pastures. He and the various devs including aeroevan, chillybean, CondemnedSoul, khamsakamal, and others I might be missing have given us ICS and even JB, which is more than we can ask of them for free and more than we've seen from HTC.
Have I encountered lag on ICS/JB ROMs? Yes. Does it suck, yeah. But that's part of the game when you root your phone sometimes. All of our latest ROMs are using a kernel that's too old because newer source isn't available due to being left out to dry by HTC. Be happy you get to even see 4.0+ at this point. Have some respect please, and maybe you'll have ours someday.
Good day, sir.

you are a complete jackass......viper rom was tested for months, and part of testing isnt "can xyz rom work after using this rom", it was verifying the rom itself worked for the end user....the aosp install scripts dont wipe / format all partitions that viper does, so not everything was getting wiped properly for those trying to go cm9/10....someone else made a script to wipe between viper and cm9, so great
you have never contributed anything ot this community except to piss me off and make yourself look like a jerk, congrats...its people like you that make devs want to walk away and say make your own ****ing roms :good:

I've only been in this thread for 2 minutes and already I can tell you are a complete worthless contribution to this community and the Android system all together. It is people like you who make the iPhone people actually have a point. You are everything that Android should not be, do us all a favor and just shut your mouth or go get an iPhone because clearly you don't deserve the benefits of Android. You do nothing for this community, and just run your mouth like you know what you are talking about, offending contributors that spend hours upon hours of their free time to do this. If you are too dumb to figure out how to flash from one ROM to the next that is not the developers fault, it is user error, and not just user error you come here and bash people because of your stupidity. It's people like you that make the real contributors not even want to publicly release their work. Go away, grow up, get a life, and get off mommy and daddys verizon plan, we don't want you here.

Nobody's hating

E4GT - Current State of Affairs.

Ok so looking at soo many recent posts about rooting, modems and latest OTA and a lot of confusion among new users, I have decided to start this thread where I will update the latest developments for our Galaxy SII (SPH-D710).
Latest OTA:- ICS FL24
Latest Leak:- JB GB27
"Optional" Official update:- JB GB27 (Only available via Kies)
AOSP Support:
CM10 - Beta
CM10.1 - Unofficial
Paranoid Android - Official
BAKED BlackBean - Unofficial
AoCP The Collective - Unofficial
PACman - Official
Evervolv - Official
ROMs:
-Flash a ROM from development forums and figure out which one you like.
-If you are smart enough, you will easily be able to figure out by scanning through first 2-3 pages in development forums that which ROMs are popular and updated.
-Don't ask for best/perfect/bugless/battery lasts a week ROMs. Every user is different and everyone uses their phone in his/her own way. For example some may watch videos all day and some may text all day. So your usage varies and your definition of a perfect rom varies.
-Don't be like.. "I am a noob and am scared to flash many different ROMs." or "I don't have time to try different ROMs."
-To people like you, ever wonder if the developers here would be like I don't have time for making a thread for my ROM and provide support for it but I am going to use it personally and never share it? Devs like to develop ROMs and they like to share their work. Respect it and don't complain and moan.
Root:
-Exynos abuse to gain root was possible using an app but it was patched in the FL24 OTA so you cannot use the app to root anymore
-Root using the full odin one click .exe files. You need a PC for that. Don't have a computer? Sorry, find one.
-If you updated to JellyBean GB27 using kies and lost root, follow this to get it back - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34297546
Kernel:
-You don't need a custom kernel just because you are rooted. Stop complicating things. If you think this is all confusing. It is not. So re-read everything again. Repeat again if still confused. Trust me, if you read this stuff 2-3 times, it will all make sense.
-Don't use the SXTP FL24 kernel, it has caused random reboots for quite a few. So don't complain if you flashed that.
-If you want a custom recovery to make a backup, use the kuban custom kernel or Agat's kernel which comes with its own recovery to do so. Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826190 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421
-If you want to flash a new ROM, follow the steps in post 2 here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953783
-Have questions? Did you follow the steps and read everything twice?
Modems:
-If you are one of those who tries every new JellyBean leak or touchwiz JellyBean custom roms, you should know that for data to work on these ROMs, you can only use a JB modem.
-So when you flash to ANY other ROM, let it be AOSP based JB ROMs, ICS ROMs or GB ROMs, make sure you flash a non JB modem.
JellyBean Leaks:
-Yes you can try them. The newer leaks are stable. They are awesome. Don't complain about issues with them. They are just leaks. ROMs based on them are also based on leaks.
-We do not have source for JellyBean from Samsung. Expect some issues due to that, especially slow data on AOSP JB ROMs.
-Yes we are all waiting for Samsung and Sprint to update our phones to JellyBean. Don't ask when. No one knows.
Tools and Files:
-Everything you need is on www.rwilco12.com
-Also individual threads are in development forums.
-Stock Roms - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903252
-Kernels - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
-Modems - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764210
- Hope this clears up things for some and helps out.
- I don't mind general discussion in the thread.

Don't feel like anyone is attacking/flaming you for asking a question, usually in that scenario we have already answered that question many times and it is available for everyone to read.
Google is your best friend. Search for whatever you may be looking for with keywords relating to the topic you are looking for. Excuses like "I don't have time to search for that" will not be tolerated and your question may be ignored. We might just give you a link to lmgtfy.
Forum categories and what they are meant for. The names say it all. There are also important threads known as stickies in each sub forum. I highly recommend reading these, they are full of great information.
General
The general sub-forum is meant to be used to discuss general topics. Such as news relating to the forum you are viewing, upcoming ROMs, and off-topic banter such as McLeary's Pub
Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
This is where you can search for questions that have already been asked and solved. If you encounter a ROM specific issue, this may not be the best place to ask your question. If you are having trouble with an app or a program such as Odin or ADB, this would be a great place to ask your question.
Android Development
This is where you will find ROMs, mostly Touchwiz and a few modified AOSP ROMs. There are also tweaks for Touchwiz based ROMs that should be posted here. Do not create a new thread to ask a question here.
Original Development
This is where you will find mostly AOSP ROMs which are built from the source and are uploaded after they have finished compiling. The only exceptions here are original development such as tools which make development easier or tutorials for developing kernels, Calkulins EL29 since this was the original custom ROM for the E4GT. I think it should be in Android Development but I have no say in whether or not it should be moved.
Themes & Apps
This is where you will find discussion about various themes and modifications for your custom ROM. You can also find tutorials for various mods that change the appearance and functionality. If you find a nice app and would like to share your find with the community you may create a new thread here. App discussion is okay.
I'll update this periodically. I'm done for now. Hope you have a better experience after reading this. Good luck and enjoy the awesomeness we call XDA.
If you have any questions or need help with something, feel free to PM me. I will do the best that I can to help you. I am almost always online or checking in frequently.
Be careful... graydiggy is always ready to layeth the smacketh down on some noobs.

Great write up. Noticed a slight typo... should be Sprint and not Spring.

Not yet. People tend to ignore stickied threads because of how the app is.

It was an exploit in the kernel, it should be called Exynos abuse. It was a root exploit in the kernel that could be manipulated thru a simple command with no user knowledge or input, hence why it was patched. Rogue apps could surreptitiously gain root access without the users knowledge. It was also used for an app based root exploit on devices with the exynos 4 based SoC.
I like to break stuff!

Exynos Abuse by Chainfire. The exploit was brought to Samsung's attention and it was patched. They released a 2nd maintenance release for ICS which patched the exploit in FL24. Our developers here on XDA also patched the kernels, it was actually before Samsung did. Now all current and future builds are patched against the exploit.

I don't sleep much so I'm usually lurking around here about 20 hours a day. I spend more time lurking xda than I do actually working

I thought we abused Samsung's root and they got offended so they patched it..no? Too much? Lol.
Thanks evil. I will fix that.

Same... Well not 20 hours a day. More like 12 - 16 hours a day. I'm addicted to XDA.
We should be moderators for the E4GT...

Seriously I sleep like 4 or 5 hours a day and first thing I do I check xda while I'm doing my morning smoke 5 ciggs and take my constitutional, then I check every 5 to 15 minutes throughout the day sometimes I just keep hopping devices for a few hours straight. I'm like a junkie and xda is my heroin lmao. I wanna get some of those augmented reality glasses so I can practically mainline Tapatalk thru my eyeballs lol
Really I love reading stuff I'm interested in and im a research junkie so I'm constantly checked for new info to infuse into my brain. I'm always trying to learn more tricks to attempt things others tried but failed. I've got a new rom type I'm working on for twiz devices called AOSC which is android open source clone where im cloning twiz to look and function like aosp but retaining all stock twiz features. I've currently cloned vanilla rootbox 95%, I've got everything done but 4.2 noti toggles and hybrid UI/twiz launcher, 3rd party launchers I can force tablet mode, but im having issues with resizing on sysui and the twiz launcher. I'm gonna release a semi beta for the note 2 as soon as I update to the latest OTA. The features shouldn't be too hard to port to other twiz roms and my work will be open for anyone to port to their sammy device. I love aosp but I miss the functions and stability of stock firmware so I'm cloning aosp into twiz by making or cannibilizing the features to clone into twiz.
I like to break stuff!
When updating the second post, Mattix, make sure you include that I am always watching and ready to lay the smack down on some noobies.
