When you shake your phone next to your ear, do you hear a rattling noise in the phone?
Is this normal?
Sounds like the volume rocker rattling a bit on mine. I hadn't noticed before. It doesn't seem particularly concerning to me.

The thing is if you hold the volume keys down, the rattle is still there?
It's the camera lens I believe.

So when you hold down the volume rocker, you hear no rattiling? In all motions?
Can we have more people to confirm this?
Is it the camera leans? When you shake your phone near your ear, do you hear noise?

When I lightly put my thumb on the volume rocker to keep it still, I get no rattle at all.
If I hold the Volume rocker and lens while slightly shaking, I can faintly hear the Ocean... lol Seems to me it's the volume rocker.
The camera lense. So dont shake much
Just waiding in on this one. I have the galaxy nexus and if I tap the back of my phone it rattles quite badly. Its the camera. Its floated lens on a spring so it will rattle. Its normal for this type of lens

just as Kenneth said above, there's nothing to worry really. it's just the way these types of camera modules are constructed.
aside from the noise, your camera functions normally, right?

You take a hammer and flat screwdriver, then you break the the glass protecting the camera. Next you fill the camera up with superglue and wait until its completely stuck. Voila, now nothing can move so your camera wont work or make a single sound.

that's good since nothing is wrong with the camera, you just have to try and ignore the rattling.

Does anyone know what the hole is for on the top right corner on the back of the GN? Images below. You can also search for cases on Ebay and it is on all of them.
Noise-cancellation mic.

I don't see a mic hole on any of those pictures. And if you look at the second picture, it almost looks like a camera.
No GN I've seen so far has a mic in that location and that would be a pretty bad location for it.

Oh, yeah, a camera, that's it... No clue what that big ole thing an inch away is, but that tiny hole that you didn't even see - yeah that's a camera...
And please do tell why that would be a horrible location for a mic?

I never said it was a camera. I said whatever is behind that hole in the second picture just looks like one, alright? Cool.
And if you are on speaker phone and you place your phone down the noise cancelling mic is obstructed. Not that hard to realize honestly. Also, many people put their index finger on the top right of the phone when they hold it to their ear.

If you put the phone down in the way you describe you would also be obstructing the speaker... Most people set the phone with the speaker up for that.
I cannot fathom holding my phone in a way that obstructs that mic, however, even if i did, I would still have a regular phone call...

What's odd about it?
If it is a noise cancellation mic then its in the perfect position so I would back that theory. Up against the ear it would pick up surrounding sounds to minimize external sounds, in speakerphone operation (screen face down) it would act the same way and as the phone is quite long very few people would put their finger over the top of the phone to obstruct it.
Mark.
I think its the speaker.

You don't need a dedicated hole for the barometer. Any whole anywhere would do.

The barometer doesn't need a hole. It can just be inside the phone. It doesn't need a specific port to measure pressure. The pressure in the phone is the same as outside the phone, and there are plenty of ports on the phone already (the inside obviously isn't air tight).

LOL. That would be awesome, but the hole is way too small for the lanyard though
and it would need 2 holes for that
And its at the wrong end of the phone lol.
Mark.
just for reference, on the SGS2
the mic is at the bottom, and the noise cancellation mic is at the top, pretty close to where the opening of the GN case is showing
so i wouldn't be surprised if there's really a NC Mic in that location
after all it's just a pin hole, i don't think those pics are high quality enough to show it

My friend's Optimus G makes a rattling noise as well, but don't know if it's this way on all units. Maybe set up a poll
I remember seeing another thread about this somewhere. Some say its the camera, others say its the volume buttons. Yeah, mine rattles just a little bit.
Not too worried about it. (Calmer than you are)

Just wondering, did you shake it or did you tap it around the camera?
With my friend's Optimus, it seems that it only makes the rattling noise if it's tapped. (that, or knocked against your knuckle) When it's shaken, there's pretty much no sound.

It sounds like it is coming from the earpiece area. However, this could be that it's merely the only passage for the sound to travel through. Either way, mine rattles with a shake, tap, and knock.
I guess I better open it up and see what's going on. Wish me luck. :fingers-crossed:
Edit: Confirmed, it is the camera. It is not seated firmly in the housing. Since it is connected via a ribbon, applying pressure will not fix it. Aside from applying adhesive underneath, I'm not sure there is really anything that can be done about it. However, it does not affect functionality, so the real question is whether anything SHOULD be done about it. It's just annoying.
I was wondering if I should return it or start a thread asking about it.
Ditto. If I tap the back of the phone by the camera, I hear the same thing.

Actually I did both and all kinds of movement and it was tight...Update though now as of the 3rd of December I noticed I now too have the faint little rattle from the camera lens area. I noticed when I cleaned it with my cloth sometimes it goes away for a while like maybe something shifted but it still looks fine and it still seems to take good pics and focuses...I don't know just thought I would throw in an update.
Let me pre qualify this by stating that I have never dropped or hit my phone on anything hard. I'm meticulously careful with it.
When I gently tap the phone, I hear a "rattle" inside, near the top/camera area where...if I shake it, I swear it sounds like something is loose inside.
Everything works perfectly, camera works fine, no issues to report on this amazing phone.
Anyone have this same behavior? Any ideas?
Thanks!
Mine has a slight rattle. So did my lgog. I believe what you are hearing is the volume buttons.

I have had that rattle too. I just did a very scientific test after you mentioned the volume buttons: I took it out of my tpu case, and shook it so I could hear the rattle. Then, I place a finger on each of the buttons and noticed the rattle went away after touching the power button. So, I think in my case, the power button was the culprit.
Thanks for the suggestion of the volume buttons! I, like the OP, had thought something was loose inside the camera housing or something, but if it's just the button, I'm not too concerned.
I took mine out my case and I don't have a rattle if I shake it..I even made sure not to be touching the volume buttons and still no rattle.
Guys it's the Volume buttons. It happens on all new phones that use plastic housing for the volume buttons. Goes all the way back to the Samsung Infuse, GS2, GS3, LGOG and LGOG Pro. If you can find hard-rubber ones it will go away and never come back.
No rattle here ? ?

No. Mine is firm as a mountain.
Yeah, I can hear the same thing when shaking my phone. The sound comes from somewhere in the upper part of the phone, maybe near the camera. Oh well, this is not a big deal but...A few stuck pixels, some black thingy under the glass that protects the screen, clicking sounds in recorded videos...What's next?

Clicking sounds in recorded videos is because of wifi/ bluetooth being turned ON while using camcorder.Turn OFF bluetooth/wifi and use camcorder and check , you wont find clicking sounds.
It's the volume buttons that make the sound. Nothing to worry about really. Try it. Wiggle the volume button a bit and you'll hear and see it.
In my case it's the power button. It's actually so flimsy that I'm concerned if it should be this way.
Yes, mine rattles near the ear piece. That being said, my in ear sound quantity recently degraded at volumes greater that half. This is my second g4 to have this issue. The audio sounds distorted... Like the speaker is loose?

It's not the volume/power buttons. It's the OIS.
All phones with OIS rattle when being shaked.
Solution: don't shake phone near ear.
Mine rattles slightly when side to side which is normal as the above poster explained with OIS camera phones.

Nice, actually someone posted already, it's the OIS system. I think this kind of thread is bought up in every OIS Camera phone thread

Hold power button down firmly.
Hold volume buttons down firmly.
Put phone next to ear.
Shake like a madman.
Hear rattling.
Ergo: it's not the buttons. It's the parts that make up the OIS :good:
Ah, so the source of the rattling depends on the level of shakiness

New one will still rattle though. Not the button, the OIS, like it's supposed to :good:

Zero.
On mines, it's the volume buttons, not OIS or power button as if I place my finger on top of the volume buttons by just resting it on top without pressing down, the sound is gone when shaking.
