N7100 gets official - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

https://github.com/cyanogenmod/android_vendor_cm/commit/95b761417cdc4532c3d5d08a2736e7ec5ffbbb3c
Maybe we will get some CM love soon?

hopefully! the ROM works great as is. just no service. so i think a few modifications and we could easily have it working for CDMA users?

there are apps that some prefer over spen that do essentially the same thing. hover support they have already in the note 10.1

All I need to know is when is does make to the CDMA Note2, will it have WiFi tether working?

Wifi Tether works AOSP, all third party tether apps are broken with JB

I can't speak for all but wifi tether did work for me on 3g only (not wimax) for 4.1.2 on the e4gt.

What benefit would I see over a ROM like, for instance, the "Why Not ROM" which has things like pen support and multiview and S voice, All share, Samsung wifi transfer, etc, and ALSO removes all the bloatware. The only thing I don't use is Touchwiz (I use Nova instead) on the Samsung ROM. I say this also considering that at the point where we are on a quad core 1.6 ghz ROM... "speed" isn't really an issue.
What am I missing from the Samsung ROM that I would gain with an AOSP ROM, without losing the things I mentioned above and more?
What's the gain here?

Yes. I have the Epic 4G also with 4.1 on it *great phone*, and once they stopped supporting at 2.3...I moved on past a Samsung ROM (they still don't have the camera right though [a bit choppy] ).
But in this case, the phone is so advanced and specific, the only thing I see missing here is wireless tether, which I guess will be solved eventually.
For now, the loss of all of these other things is not worth a jump to an AOSP ROM for me. To each their own though.

I also have a Epic that I really enjoyed once I had the CM9/10 rom on it, and I am keeping it around as a spare / wifi voip burner phone. I guess for me tethering is mission critical since I live in an area that does not have any high speed internet option (no cable/DSL, nothing), and I rely on my phone for access at my house. So the first ROM that is stable and has tethering will get my donation.

except that you are mistaken. My old phone was an LG G2X and both CM7 and CM9 have WiFi Calling working on that phone's releases.
What exactly is needed to get it working? Can you just copy the APK and associated files from a stock rom and paste them into a CM9 or is there some underlying system-level programming that has to be done as well?
It is not in the cm9 d2tmo 7/27 nightly.
Cm9 least brings back the 2g/3g toggle so battery life is better than stock without wifi calling in 2g only mode.
Fyi the nightlies are stable... only issues for me are with camera

I haven't bothered to look through the sgs3 source, but on my old t-959 vibrant, wifi calling also required support compiled into the kernel (KINETEO_GAN or something like that) so it's likely that we'll need the source and means to do the same for the sgs3 before wifi calling is even a possibility on cm10.
And hey, maybe that support is already in the source, like I said, I haven't bothered to download it and check.
Cheers
Tytung has GB and ICS versions
Since Tytung has made GB and ICS versions that work on AOSP / CM9, maybe he could help us?
Here is his thread with versions of WiFi Calling that I know work on HTC HD2, but I think they work on all T-Mo GB/ICS devices.

WiFi calling can be set up on any ROM. Not T-Mobile WiFi calling, but free WiFi calling nonetheless. There are plenty if tutorials floating around.
And it will never be built into official CM source.

I just reflashed my old Desire Z with the official CM7.2 downloaded from RomManager, and it came with the TMo WiFi calling built in. I'm very interested in this. My office is a cellular black hole. I need to be able to make WiFi calls with my TMo number. I don't care about the other free WiFi calling apps. I hope CM will eventually support this, or someone comes out with a patch.
BTW, the CM team is amazing. I'm not complaining about them.

SGS3 from iOS

I am a longtime android user, own all nexus devices, etc.
My brother is thinking about making the jump from iPhone to an sgs3, should he stay on touchwiz or should I help him get a stable ROM on there? Maybe AOKP jellybean?
Suggestions and opinions/experiences appreciated.
I'd say stock for a bit then later aokp. Let him get a taste of both worlds...
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
Agree. Flashing a frequently updated ROM might be a bit much for an iPhone user, and touchwiz is friendly enough!
I'd say stock w/ either Apex/Nova launcher
I say let him run stock, maybe if he wants a luncher on top of it, but if coming from iOS I would let him run TW fully there are some really cool features in TW that he will enjoy so much .
I say run stock for a few months, or until he is throughly annoyed by touch wiz. Then start flashing. Let him get used to how Android works, the menus, eyv before throwing custom stuff at him. If he doesn't know how it's SUPPOSED to work, he won't know when it DOESN'T work on a custom.
Personal opinion but no god awful touchwiz...and with the USSD bug goin around even more reason for me to never ever reccommend anyone use it
You say you have all the Nexus devices, so I'm assuming that means the Galaxy Nexus? How about letting him use your Nexus and you get an S3? That way he can get used to pure Android without having to root.

Aren't alot of features that come on the GSIII tied into TW? I haven't switched to AOKP on this phone but ran it on my GSII. There are things you have to give up by going AOKP or CM.

Like crap battery life, 26 hrs plus on AOKP. Lol. There are TW features that are missing (certain camera features come to mind). But to the point of the OP, if you haven't used TW much, you won't miss them. Yes, AOKP/CM10 are updated frequently, but you don't have to update unless you want to. If the build you are on is stable, battery life is great and you're happy, don't update. I flash every update, my wife is on an early August build. For a person new to the S3, I would stay stock for a month (30 day return policy). If they're happy, leave it alone. If the battery sucks, root it, load Titanium Backup, and kill all the S-crap and carrier bloat. It should be a learning process, done in steps. Android is fun and there are so many options, which (to me) is why it is better than IOS. Too many people rush into custom ROM's without acquiring the basic knowledge of how Android works.

It works on PA rom, not on leaked Touchwiz. I have nandroids of both, if need tethering, restore PA, it takes few minutes only.
CyanogenMod 10 and AOKP have it built right in. Works flawlessly.
As far as Touchwiz roms, though, nothing is working yet.
Is it a restriction in Jellybean that prevents third party wifi tether apps from working which the Android developers did, or is it just a compatibility issue which will be fixed in future updates of Jellybean or the tether app?
As mentioned in last 2 posts, it does work on some JB roms, so it's not a JB limitation.

Ya I'm sure it works on Verizon just fine. Youre in the sprint forum. Sprints hotspot is setup differently which is why verizons has a hack and sprints doesnt. I could flash a stock verizon rom to my sprint phone and tethering will work.Sprint ****d our hotspot capabilities with the update. I will say tho and it must be some random fluke that while running a leak, LIH I believe, the hotspot worked once or twice when I tried it.

Same Here, will be very glad when we get this solved.
Detailed Problem Description
I have searched and read quite a bit on this issue and do not have a clear understanding of what is actually the core issue here. Best I can tell, Sprint changed the interface/API to something with JB that prevents 3rd party tething. If that is accurate, not sure what that is specifically. If that is the case, it doesn't explain why it supposed works on some JB ROMs. Similarly, if it works in ICS and not JB, one would think that the API would not be the issue.
Several have implied that the native CM10 tether works since it is based on AOSP; however, mine will present as an AP and allow clients to connect but the data just doesn't pipe through. On that note, I have seen reports that non-TW ROMs work.
I am clearly not the expert on this matter but would find it useful is someone that does have real insight could clear the rumor air on what is and isn't really the issue.
Works!
This is an old thread, but if you're here, don't despair. Works like a charm for me (stock, rooted sprint s3) following the links in qbking77's video: Free Wifi Tether/Hotspot for the Samsung Galaxy S III on Jelly Bean

SGS3 know issues

What are some other issues that might have arisen?

Roger on the OCD! I have my issues too....has anyone come out with a mod for that?..I can live with it. I'm hoping there's no performance issues like the S2 has with Wifi calling...everything else, I can probably live with....I hope....
I wouldn't call WiFi calling a "performance" issue but I would call it an issue with the s3. Comparing it side by side with my old G2X the s3 is a flop sad to say, with WiFi calling. I'm pretty sure 4.+ ROMs changed WiFi calling and made it terrible.
Other then that the S3 is a performance beast with tiny hardware stuff... screens having dead pixels, very un-common. loose hardware buttons, little tiny things like that.

AOSP influenced is anything available for the SGS III that is not TouchWiz, CyanogenMod, AOKP, AOSP, Parandroid, SlimBeam and so and so on. None of those will have Wi-Fi calling built in natively. There are apps out there though be people stand by to do them well (BobSled) I think it is.

It doesn't have to do with rooting.. I am rooted right now and I can use every feature the stock phone comes with, but if you start flashing different roms and want to keep the same features like WiFi calling and a few others, you would have to look for a touchwiz based ROM..

Exactly. You should read more though if you weren't sure of those kind of things. Look into backing up your imei, and which recovery to use, and how to revert to complete stock after rooting and flashing. Best recommendations I can offer to someone so they don't have to make a thread on something that has been discussed countless number of times like others do everyday haha.

TMO Wifi calling

So if I were to move away from Twiz, and try say PACman rom, could I still get the WIFI calling app? I kinda need it while at home because I get little service and it's the main reason I switched to TMO

So any rom with Twiz?
Darn, kind of a shame. Is it in the framework or something? No way to port it over??? I know it's early since the release, but Would you know of a JB based Twiz rom that's debloated and running stable/fast? I'm still getting used to all the new ROM options. (Back in my EVO days we only had Sense and AOSP.)

Working right now but when I get home I'll try that out. Do you know if it has v6 supercharger baked in?

It's not too bad. Pretty nice. But how can I reduce the text size for notification bar and turn off vol keys wake?

Think so. It's as fast or faster with aggressive memory mgmt going on. Very smooth jb4.1.2 rom. Which was the last rom tmo included wifi-calling in.
As far as I've been able to find out, tmo has used two different implementations of wifi-calling. The first was a spaghetti code type of deal that still drives developers nuts; the second was a very good modularized implementation done by a very knowledgeable contractor based on open source code.
By the time the contract was up, the developer had developed the code so far beyond the available open source code, they felt justified in charging for it's use and further development. TMo balked at this saying they're not making enough money to justify that.
So, the current situation is that the nice modular code cannot be further developed without royalties and the spaghetti code is something that developers aren't willing to deal with.
Mind you, all this is off the top of my memory from internet searching on the topic. I'm sure I've got some of the details wrong; but, that should give you the gist of the situation.
If you search the Whitehawxx (WH) jb-aokp thread for: wifi-calling; you'll find his position on the matter. In case you or any one else is reading this post don't know, WH is a well respected, knowlegeable, dilligent developer whom we're lucky to have working on hercules. His opinion is highly regarded by many.
YMMV, good luck to you sir. :cyclops:
