TMO Wifi calling - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So if I were to move away from Twiz, and try say PACman rom, could I still get the WIFI calling app? I kinda need it while at home because I get little service and it's the main reason I switched to TMO

So any rom with Twiz?
Darn, kind of a shame. Is it in the framework or something? No way to port it over??? I know it's early since the release, but Would you know of a JB based Twiz rom that's debloated and running stable/fast? I'm still getting used to all the new ROM options. (Back in my EVO days we only had Sense and AOSP.)

It's not too bad. Pretty nice. But how can I reduce the text size for notification bar and turn off vol keys wake?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

Think so. It's as fast or faster with aggressive memory mgmt going on. Very smooth jb4.1.2 rom. Which was the last rom tmo included wifi-calling in.
As far as I've been able to find out, tmo has used two different implementations of wifi-calling. The first was a spaghetti code type of deal that still drives developers nuts; the second was a very good modularized implementation done by a very knowledgeable contractor based on open source code.
By the time the contract was up, the developer had developed the code so far beyond the available open source code, they felt justified in charging for it's use and further development. TMo balked at this saying they're not making enough money to justify that.
So, the current situation is that the nice modular code cannot be further developed without royalties and the spaghetti code is something that developers aren't willing to deal with.
Mind you, all this is off the top of my memory from internet searching on the topic. I'm sure I've got some of the details wrong; but, that should give you the gist of the situation.
If you search the Whitehawxx (WH) jb-aokp thread for: wifi-calling; you'll find his position on the matter. In case you or any one else is reading this post don't know, WH is a well respected, knowlegeable, dilligent developer whom we're lucky to have working on hercules. His opinion is highly regarded by many.
YMMV, good luck to you sir. :cyclops:

Here's another one - NO!
I'm sure we`'ll see it added soon enough. Cyanogen added it to a lot of cm7 supported devices. It's only a matter of time. I'm stuck on modded stock roms until it is. XP

except that you are mistaken. My old phone was an LG G2X and both CM7 and CM9 have WiFi Calling working on that phone's releases.
What exactly is needed to get it working? Can you just copy the APK and associated files from a stock rom and paste them into a CM9 or is there some underlying system-level programming that has to be done as well?
It is not in the cm9 d2tmo 7/27 nightly.
Cm9 least brings back the 2g/3g toggle so battery life is better than stock without wifi calling in 2g only mode.
Fyi the nightlies are stable... only issues for me are with camera
If trying to obtain focus in low light situation and continually click on your subject for more then 4 seconds...then I get close/wait

I haven't bothered to look through the sgs3 source, but on my old t-959 vibrant, wifi calling also required support compiled into the kernel (KINETEO_GAN or something like that) so it's likely that we'll need the source and means to do the same for the sgs3 before wifi calling is even a possibility on cm10.
And hey, maybe that support is already in the source, like I said, I haven't bothered to download it and check.
Cheers
Tytung has GB and ICS versions
Since Tytung has made GB and ICS versions that work on AOSP / CM9, maybe he could help us?
Here is his thread with versions of WiFi Calling that I know work on HTC HD2, but I think they work on all T-Mo GB/ICS devices.

WiFi calling can be set up on any ROM. Not T-Mobile WiFi calling, but free WiFi calling nonetheless. There are plenty if tutorials floating around.
And it will never be built into official CM source.

I just reflashed my old Desire Z with the official CM7.2 downloaded from RomManager, and it came with the TMo WiFi calling built in. I'm very interested in this. My office is a cellular black hole. I need to be able to make WiFi calls with my TMo number. I don't care about the other free WiFi calling apps. I hope CM will eventually support this, or someone comes out with a patch.
BTW, the CM team is amazing. I'm not complaining about them.

Besides, the roms we have are awesome and are constantly developed and improved.

I can kinda see where the OP is coming from. On the G2X forums the stock roms were very very customized. These are all "tweaked" stock roms with little difference between the many... based off different bases, and have "build prop" tweaks and "init.d" tweaks, animations and so on. The att section has truly optimized and custom stock roms.
I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining cause I use aokp and cm10 mostly. But it'd be nice to have the extremely custom stock options like att users got.

True. I'm also coming from the G2x and even tho we did I tend to stay closer to stock because I actually like tw. I will occasionally flash cm nightly just for ****s and giggles.

I don't mean customization for stability. I mean like whitehawkX edt tweaks and such. ATT roms have skipping tracks via long press on volume rocker and such. We have good stuff but it'd be awesome to have more options then different color stock roms. Most of the stuff I want is flashable any ways. Just a little rant... I'm just happy this thing is stable no matter what haha.

I wasn't trying to complain a lot. It was mainly what the above poster said. Just not a lot of variety like some phones have. Don't get me wrong, we have some of the best devs on the sgs3. I just like more options though
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
In my opinion OP Android is maturing and the devices are much more usable than they once were with now just minor annoyances now.. There will be more development soon but the GS3 is enjoyable stock with tweaks for now... Such was the case with the OG Vibrant when Team Whiskey and Eugene tweaked and enhanced stock Twiz and the dev scene for that device took off and is still prevalent with the Vibrant being one of the first devices to run a stable JB... As a matter of fact because of devices like the Vibrant we have many of the staple dev names we see amongst many threads amongst many forums and for several devices including this one, for example Whitehawkx, Annex and others..
Stay tuned as I suspect it is going to be fun..
Those devs aren't focusing on TW at all. They have cm10 and variants to do and kernels to work on. Things are especially going to die down for a little with JellyBeen coming around the corner.

If you want features of an AT&T ROM flash an AT&T ROM.. what's stopping you? They work fine if you set up the APNs correctly. I mean look at the i9100 forums. There's so many ROMs there but all of the touchwiz ROMs differ in what, a few build.prop lines and a theme? I'm not trying to attack you I just am not understanding what exactly you or OP are asking for. I understand some features aren't in our ROMs but like I said, flash an AT&T one if you want that feature. Or flash CM10, we have that feature

You said you mostly use CM10/AOKP but you won't flash an AT&T ROM because of no WiFi calling? You can set up WiFi calling on any ROM you want. I do it on CM10. Sure it is roundabout and not T-Mobile WiFi calling but it's still free and still WiFi calling.

Good answer. Seriously. All of the stocks only differ by a color here and a icon there. Running the Cm10 nightlies, and seeing the new additions and fixes is what I'm impressed with. I am sure soon, we will see more roms being done with the cm10 base and others. My daily, is CM10 period. Seen enough of the stock stuff. HTC MyTouch took awhile, but was flooded later with some good roms.

SGS3 from iOS

I am a longtime android user, own all nexus devices, etc.
My brother is thinking about making the jump from iPhone to an sgs3, should he stay on touchwiz or should I help him get a stable ROM on there? Maybe AOKP jellybean?
Suggestions and opinions/experiences appreciated.
I'd say stock for a bit then later aokp. Let him get a taste of both worlds...
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
Agree. Flashing a frequently updated ROM might be a bit much for an iPhone user, and touchwiz is friendly enough!
I'd say stock w/ either Apex/Nova launcher
I say let him run stock, maybe if he wants a luncher on top of it, but if coming from iOS I would let him run TW fully there are some really cool features in TW that he will enjoy so much .
I say run stock for a few months, or until he is throughly annoyed by touch wiz. Then start flashing. Let him get used to how Android works, the menus, eyv before throwing custom stuff at him. If he doesn't know how it's SUPPOSED to work, he won't know when it DOESN'T work on a custom.
Personal opinion but no god awful touchwiz...and with the USSD bug goin around even more reason for me to never ever reccommend anyone use it
You say you have all the Nexus devices, so I'm assuming that means the Galaxy Nexus? How about letting him use your Nexus and you get an S3? That way he can get used to pure Android without having to root.

Aren't alot of features that come on the GSIII tied into TW? I haven't switched to AOKP on this phone but ran it on my GSII. There are things you have to give up by going AOKP or CM.

Like crap battery life, 26 hrs plus on AOKP. Lol. There are TW features that are missing (certain camera features come to mind). But to the point of the OP, if you haven't used TW much, you won't miss them. Yes, AOKP/CM10 are updated frequently, but you don't have to update unless you want to. If the build you are on is stable, battery life is great and you're happy, don't update. I flash every update, my wife is on an early August build. For a person new to the S3, I would stay stock for a month (30 day return policy). If they're happy, leave it alone. If the battery sucks, root it, load Titanium Backup, and kill all the S-crap and carrier bloat. It should be a learning process, done in steps. Android is fun and there are so many options, which (to me) is why it is better than IOS. Too many people rush into custom ROM's without acquiring the basic knowledge of how Android works.

Port paranoidkang droid to tmobile

I am wondering how the policy works with porting an at&t ROM to T-Mobile as I am currently running this ROM which is a combo of AOpk and Pa but its by far the smoothest rom I have flashed and much more options than PA plus the video volume is loud as hell so since I am new to the xda community I want to know what are the rules of porting this bad a$$ ROM so that all T-Mobile users can use this as a dd do I need permission from thebz1 or I could just post it for you guys I have it all ready but don't want to anything against the policy please fill me in guys

thebz1 was working on tmo Pa THREAD a couple month ago until he decided that he would only take care of at&t only that is why OG came in and started getting PA again but after flashing PA and PK i could tell you that PK is much more stable than PA, its much much smoother, the video volume is really loud, you ger rom control and paranoid android settings together in one so much more customization. i guess since it is an open source i feel that i should port it over , i was respectful by asking him so he doesn't own PK anyhow im going to be working on this over the weekend

Obviously both of you haven't tried the AT&T ROM on a T999 because it won't even flash in recovery, much less boot up. I know this because I've tried it in multiple stages of development. He was asking about porting another persons work, and XDA's policy. Yes, most AT&T ROMS work on t-mo too (as long as it doesn't contain AT&T modem), but lets not be redundant & state what most people in this forum already know. Thanks for the port bro. It's running like butter!

I'm sorry, maybe I've missed something...If I have, forgive me,
But, the original Dev did not give you permission to port his work over. Have you considered that he may have a reason for it? Perhaps he plans to support multiple devices with it, like many other devs do with their Roms.
That is just a guess, but if something like that were the case, depending on how popular the dev is, and how P.O.'d he gets, you could be making a lot of enemies on here....
Something like this, if you want it that bad, go ahead and port it. But do it for yourself, do not release it.
If you were planning on releasing it regardless of his answer, then you should never have asked.
Sorry man, just trying to help.....

Hi, I currently have the SGS2 from T-Mobile and would like to give it to my mother-in-law and get the SGS3 for myself. I was wondering if there are any known issues for this phone? Like, currently, on the SGS2, using Wifi, I get calling issues, dropped calls, Audio issue...Someone said that there might be the same issues for the SGS3 as well...can anyone confirm this? What are some other issues that might have arisen?
Or maybe point me in the right direction for T-Mobile user issues...I have seen some of the other carrier ones, but I am concerned with T-Mobile....Thanks!!!
I have no issues with anything when I'm using stock tw

That's good!
There is the well known loose power button problem, but unless you're OCD (like me lol), it shouldnt be that big of a deal

Roger on the OCD! I have my issues too....has anyone come out with a mod for that?..I can live with it. I'm hoping there's no performance issues like the S2 has with Wifi calling...everything else, I can probably live with....I hope....
I wouldn't call WiFi calling a "performance" issue but I would call it an issue with the s3. Comparing it side by side with my old G2X the s3 is a flop sad to say, with WiFi calling. I'm pretty sure 4.+ ROMs changed WiFi calling and made it terrible.
Other then that the S3 is a performance beast with tiny hardware stuff... screens having dead pixels, very un-common. loose hardware buttons, little tiny things like that.

I haven't come across any issues with touchwiz, but I can't say on WiFi calling because I don't use it.. And yup the lose power button is there

Roger..
WIFI calling works fine on stock rooted. I have no signal in my house (from any network) and rely on WIFI calling there - and I've never had an issue. I've heard some people are having issues that might have to do with their router set-up.

I personally hate TW roms so when I found that LiquidSmooth which has a great balance between stability and functionawhich I fell in love.
I would suggest giving that a try unless the person is content with stock.

That's good to know...I have this issue currently on the S2... TM Supposedly is aware of the problem (since Aug 2012) and is working on a fix...I have the same issue as you...No network coverage at my house and NEED to rely on the WIFI calling feature.

I'll look into that when I get it...Thanks!
If you rely on WiFi calling you won't get to use aosp influenced ROMs, only touchwiz ROMs.

Really?
What is aosp influenced ROM?
why is that?
I am using the Wifi calling feature on my S2 now...is this why I have calling issues?
Hey man I used to have a tmobile s2 and now I have an s3. I loved the s2 but I hated that I used to have a call echo on every rom out there. And for that reason I was confuse on having another samsung device. I got the s3 as a christmas gift. so far I love it. No call echo or issues. I think samsung listen well with its last galaxy devices like the galaxyS/galaxys2. I have no issues with the s3 no how. About the wifi calling I cant answer that I dont use that. other than that the S3 beats the S2 big time

AOSP influenced is anything available for the SGS III that is not TouchWiz, CyanogenMod, AOKP, AOSP, Parandroid, SlimBeam and so and so on. None of those will have Wi-Fi calling built in natively. There are apps out there though be people stand by to do them well (BobSled) I think it is.

It doesn't have to do with rooting.. I am rooted right now and I can use every feature the stock phone comes with, but if you start flashing different roms and want to keep the same features like WiFi calling and a few others, you would have to look for a touchwiz based ROM..

Exactly. You should read more though if you weren't sure of those kind of things. Look into backing up your imei, and which recovery to use, and how to revert to complete stock after rooting and flashing. Best recommendations I can offer to someone so they don't have to make a thread on something that has been discussed countless number of times like others do everyday haha.
