I am running Note Cards 1.1 and I get an OTA update notification every few minutes and it is driving me nuts! Does anybody know how to disable update notifications on the Galaxy Note II?
Anybody?
Why does a custom ROM not remove this? Just goes to show that a little bit of knowledge about developing can be dangerous and a stock ROM with build.prop tweaks shouldn't even be posted...
That said, delete /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip and reboot.

On the gs3 we just ran the update as it wouldnt go through, then reboot the phone as it would take you to recovery. after that it wouldnt prompt you any more.

Its simple root your device and you are done.you will not get ota notification as ota is disabled when device is rooted.
And even this doesn't works then root device, download app called link2sd or Rom toolbox and freeze software update app.it will work for sure.

I feel like an idiot but reading/googling hasn't helped me figure out how to actually find this folder to delete that file. Is this something you find on the phone itself or with the rom zip pre-flash. My file manager doesn't have any folders named system, etc, or security

First off you need a file manager that allows root access, make sure you allow those folders to be accessed "in the settings menu of that manager." It is a file from your device if you are getting the notification.

I deleted OTAcerts.zip, cleared my cache, and rebooted. I still have that damned update notification. If I try to run it it just says "no firmware". I'm running the stock ROM with Perseus kernal. I am on AT&T, I'm not sure if that would account for the difference or not.
I just received the update and nothing has happened. I no longer getting update notification

Update for a sure way without deleting files rooted device.
use a folder explorer like Root Explorer:
[QRCODE]https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&hl=en[/QRCODE]
Navigate to:
/system/app: change fwupgrade.apk to fwupgrade.old and keychain.pak to keychain.old
/system/etc/security: change otacerts.zip to otacerts.old
Now reboot to recovery mode and wipe cache. Reboot system to GUI. If update appears, accept install. Countdown will appear but nothing will be installed.
The update notification will no longer appear. :good:

Try freezing device manager in titanium backup.
If that doesnt do the trick, you may have to manually locate the update on your phones storage and remove it. root explorer or ghost commander can be used to do this... Just be careful and always do a nandroid backup before making any system level changes.

Hey all, some of you may know me from other sammy forums. I currently don't have a galaxy s iii yet, so am limited to what I can do in terms of development at the moment, but would like to release some build prop tweaks for you guys to get things running a little smoother.
The build.prop is attached at the bottom, just unzip and adb push to /system or place it there using root explorer and change permissions to match the existing file.. Enjoy, I will have more to come soon
For the latest lf9 Update.

For those of you out there looking to remove the update notification either because you have a custom rom or you don't like fixing what isn't broken, here's a step by step guide on how to remove update notifications and prevent them from returning:
Solution:
Step 1. Delete the update located in /cache/fota/ (may be /data/fota) and then click the update notification prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and the notification will disappear.
Step 2. Disable Otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it to otacerts.zip.bak
Step 3. Disable FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk by renaming with .bak extensions located in /system/app/
Step 4. Reboot
FWUpgrade.apk may be the only file you need to disable to prevent future notifications, but I disable all just in case.

Download an APP called Titanium Backup from playstore..
it gives you an option to "FREEZE" an application..
Go into the application and "FREEZE" software update. It should do the trick!

Holy crap, it worked, thank you so much!!!
I couldn't find this information anywhere after hours of searching, so for anyone else looking into this, the update.zip to delete is located in /cache/fota and requires root access.

After implementing this fix, I noticed a new file created In the /cache/fota/ directory titled fota.status. This may be some kind of deactivation placeholder to prevent the system from re-downloading the update after installation failure.
In trying to figure this out, I dug up a ton of information on preventing the download. This may help in the event the notification returns:
One post said to disable otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it otacerts.zip.bak
Another said to delete (though renaming with .bak extension should disable) FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk located in /system/app/
Note: These methods did not stop the notification, they appear to only effect checking for updates and downloading.
Good to know. Thanks!
Did the fota.status file have anything in it? In root explorer if you long press the file you can open in text viewer.

you will still need to disable the software update process. (Will have two arrows as an icon in titanium backup, freeze it)
Once that's disabled, then you delete the update and mock install it. When it fails it should not bother you anymore.
You can verify it by going into settings>about> then check for update, it will do nothing.

If you rename /system/app/FWUpgrade.apk with .bak extension and restart, it effectively disables software update without the need for Titanium Backup. Unfortunately only the Pro version of Titanium Backup can freeze running programs.
UPDATE:
My friend just told me that the notification came back for him. I've disabled the 3 aforementioned files on my phone and he will re-implement the fix and do the same. I will report back if the notification returns but I'm confident that they won't.

Have you backed up the rom then tried to take the update to see if it is really the ota and not something else?

i am not responsible for anyone who screws their phones up this is just something i tried and definatly helped me so i wanted to share
my phone had already downloaded the update and kept nagging to update every 10 minutes or so when and if you try my method do not delete the ics update that will be found in the search as this method needs the update there and needs it to fail any modifications done to the system such as deleting device management , debloating ,custom bootloader should all result in a failed update attempt and this is what you want
1st obtain root of-course
2nd obtain root explorer or something equivalent
3rd from root explorer on 1st page select menue and do a search for "update"
4th look for file " /data/data/com.sprint.ce.updater/shared_prefs/com.sprint.ce.updater_preferences.xml" you will see retry mode value by default it is set to true, change it to false ( if you change any system files such as deleting device management or running custom bootloader it will fail) you want it to fail , buy changing the true value to false and allowing it to try to update even though you know it will fail it wont come back up with nagging notice to update atleast it worked for me hope helps someone else out there p.s after failed update attempt it may get stuck in bootloader with triangle or something just do battery pull then reboot then voila no more annoying msgs asking to update ,nearly a week now and no pop ups for me

Wow I was waiting for this mod!!! Sham on you Sammy for making this wonderful Dev make it right. I for sure didnt forget to hit the thanks button on this one!
Worked like a charm. Had to delete the odex file, then the mod took. A cache/dalvik wipe took care of the "upgrading apps" screen. My ringtones start loud and stay that way. Many thanks!

I can't seem to find the "secphone.odex" file. Only secphone.apk.

Are you running a custom ROM? If so, you're probably already deodexed.
OK. I got ya. I still get the "updating apparently" on restart. I have cleared caches.

Not sure I can be of much more help if you're on a deodexed ROM already. I've stuck with rooted/de-bloated stock for the time being. Wiping the caches solved it for me, aside from the first boot after the cache wipe, of course, but I'm still fully odexed aside from that one file I deleted.
It worked for me this time, thinfs different from the first try, im now on the lite de-bloated stock rom and modded kernel

So it looks like I need to modify the zip install to remove the .odex file.
Makes sense since de-odexing turns the .odex into a classes file inside the apk, which is then edited. I'll edit the zip today to remove to .odex file.

Did this ever get done, sir?

Flash in recovery. Even if you aren't de-odexed this should still work. In the zip I did not have it delete the .odex extension in /system/app. So after you flash this feel free to delete the SecPhone.odex, or leave it, your choice.

I installed and it did not work. I then used Root Explorer to delete /system/app/SecPhone.odex, cleared caches, rebooted and it works fine.
Thanks for the utility it was greatly needed.

I have not yet. I'm sorry. Can anyone do it for me? Busy at work at the moment.
How to revert?
antiochasylum said:
Well I'm not sure why Samsung does this, however it drives me nuts. So here is the phone.apk without the increasing ringtone stuff.
Flash in recovery.
You must delete the "SecPhone.odex" in /system/app after installing. Until I can make a time to have the zip do it. Thanks

I fully agree with you, this volume increase doesn't make any sense however, is there a way to revert back to the previous state should something go awry? Thanks.
