[HOW TO] Disable OTA Update Notifications!!!!!!!!!!!!! - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

For those of you out there looking to remove the update notification either because you have a custom rom or you don't like fixing what isn't broken, here's a step by step guide on how to remove update notifications and prevent them from returning:
Solution:
Step 1. Delete the update located in /cache/fota/ (may be /data/fota) and then click the update notification prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and the notification will disappear.
Step 2. Disable Otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it to otacerts.zip.bak
Step 3. Disable FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk by renaming with .bak extensions located in /system/app/
Step 4. Reboot
FWUpgrade.apk may be the only file you need to disable to prevent future notifications, but I disable all just in case.

Delete the update from /cache/ and then click the prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and then not bother you anymore.

Download an APP called Titanium Backup from playstore..
it gives you an option to "FREEZE" an application..
Go into the application and "FREEZE" software update. It should do the trick!

Holy crap, it worked, thank you so much!!!
I couldn't find this information anywhere after hours of searching, so for anyone else looking into this, the update.zip to delete is located in /cache/fota and requires root access.

Good call dude! That didn't even cross my mind!
Question though, if you do this without disabling the app will it eventually notify you again? Or is disabling the app not even necessary?

After implementing this fix, I noticed a new file created In the /cache/fota/ directory titled fota.status. This may be some kind of deactivation placeholder to prevent the system from re-downloading the update after installation failure.
In trying to figure this out, I dug up a ton of information on preventing the download. This may help in the event the notification returns:
One post said to disable otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it otacerts.zip.bak
Another said to delete (though renaming with .bak extension should disable) FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk located in /system/app/
Note: These methods did not stop the notification, they appear to only effect checking for updates and downloading.

Good to know. Thanks!
Did the fota.status file have anything in it? In root explorer if you long press the file you can open in text viewer.

you will still need to disable the software update process. (Will have two arrows as an icon in titanium backup, freeze it)
Once that's disabled, then you delete the update and mock install it. When it fails it should not bother you anymore.
You can verify it by going into settings>about> then check for update, it will do nothing.

If you rename /system/app/FWUpgrade.apk with .bak extension and restart, it effectively disables software update without the need for Titanium Backup. Unfortunately only the Pro version of Titanium Backup can freeze running programs.
UPDATE:
My friend just told me that the notification came back for him. I've disabled the 3 aforementioned files on my phone and he will re-implement the fix and do the same. I will report back if the notification returns but I'm confident that they won't.

I've added clear instructions in the OP so there's no more need to sift through the thread.
This fix is confirmed working on my device and 2 of my friends devices.

Cool. Good job on that!
Not totally necessary but you could also edit the thread tiitle and put [SOLVED] in front of the original.
Can make it a little easier for some people who come across a long list of results from a search.

Excellent idea, just changed it, thanks for the info!

Thanks so much! Only method to work, been working on this for an hour. The key is the failed update, I had already done everything else to no avail. Seriously thanks so much this was the only downside to a ROM I absolutely love. I can also keep my local search *middle finger to crapple*

Did it start after you deleted/uninstalled a system app? Possibly with TB?
2 minutes on google.....
Apparently it's a copy/paste bug a TON of people have had.
1) Factory Restore your device
2) ROOT your device, install ROOT Explorer, navigate to / > data > clipboard, select ALL and delete all, than go into your Settings > Applications Manager > All, look for TestServices, than remove updates/clear data. Reboot and everything should be fine.
And please next time you post a problem at least say what rom you're on. Are you stock? Rooted? What kernel?
You shouldn't have to factory reset. If you factory reset...the clipboard will be cleared...so, you're doing twice the work. I've had this issue. just delete the clipboard folder and reboot.
I copy and pasted that it's option 1 or 2. From now on people can search for themselves sheesh.

You need to slow down, I did google search and I do not have the copy and paste bug. I'm rooted I'm stock and I clear my clipboard out every single day. I'm well aware to use Google before posting a question here, I didnt find my answer on google so I came and asked here.

Then why didn't you post that you had already tried that........
Because I didn't need to, if you would have dug a little deeper you would have found out the copy and paste bug along with the error I'm getting have nothing to do with each other. So before you come on somebody's post and Bash them for not using Google and not trying to find the answer there self maybe you should investigate your answer more thoroughly, plain and simple end a story.

Wow are you sure that solves this issue? Or you were busier bashing the op ad forgot that your post shows verh clearly how dumb you are since your fix is totally unrelated to his issue? @op you probably deleted one of the test.apk apps inside the system-app folder. Just go to the rom zip file and go to system then app then find all apps that have the word test in them grab those and push them into the system - app of your phone. Use root explored make sure to change permissions accordingly.

Have you backed up the rom then tried to take the update to see if it is really the ota and not something else?
Edit: Worse case scenario, I can edit the build.prop file so the ROM thinks it is a current ICS build so it won't nag you any longer either.

i am not responsible for anyone who screws their phones up this is just something i tried and definatly helped me so i wanted to share
my phone had already downloaded the update and kept nagging to update every 10 minutes or so when and if you try my method do not delete the ics update that will be found in the search as this method needs the update there and needs it to fail any modifications done to the system such as deleting device management , debloating ,custom bootloader should all result in a failed update attempt and this is what you want
1st obtain root of-course
2nd obtain root explorer or something equivalent
3rd from root explorer on 1st page select menue and do a search for "update"
4th look for file " /data/data/com.sprint.ce.updater/shared_prefs/com.sprint.ce.updater_preferences.xml" you will see retry mode value by default it is set to true, change it to false ( if you change any system files such as deleting device management or running custom bootloader it will fail) you want it to fail , buy changing the true value to false and allowing it to try to update even though you know it will fail it wont come back up with nagging notice to update atleast it worked for me hope helps someone else out there p.s after failed update attempt it may get stuck in bootloader with triangle or something just do battery pull then reboot then voila no more annoying msgs asking to update ,nearly a week now and no pop ups for me

[Q] How do I disable OTA notifications?

I am running Note Cards 1.1 and I get an OTA update notification every few minutes and it is driving me nuts! Does anybody know how to disable update notifications on the Galaxy Note II?
Anybody?
Why does a custom ROM not remove this? Just goes to show that a little bit of knowledge about developing can be dangerous and a stock ROM with build.prop tweaks shouldn't even be posted...
That said, delete /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip and reboot.

On the gs3 we just ran the update as it wouldnt go through, then reboot the phone as it would take you to recovery. after that it wouldnt prompt you any more.

Its simple root your device and you are done.you will not get ota notification as ota is disabled when device is rooted.
And even this doesn't works then root device, download app called link2sd or Rom toolbox and freeze software update app.it will work for sure.

First off you need a file manager that allows root access, make sure you allow those folders to be accessed "in the settings menu of that manager." It is a file from your device if you are getting the notification.

Update for a sure way without deleting files rooted device.
use a folder explorer like Root Explorer:
[QRCODE]https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&hl=en[/QRCODE]
Navigate to:
/system/app: change fwupgrade.apk to fwupgrade.old and keychain.pak to keychain.old
/system/etc/security: change otacerts.zip to otacerts.old
Now reboot to recovery mode and wipe cache. Reboot system to GUI. If update appears, accept install. Countdown will appear but nothing will be installed.
The update notification will no longer appear. :good:

As far as I remember, the otacerts was just some way to check the update after downloading it but before installing it.
I'm pretty sure DmClient.apk in /system/app is the actual app that checks for and initiates the update download, check, install process.
I've been removing it from any Sense rom I've used and have never had an update notification.
If you want to be safe, just rename it .old or something to test before removing it completely.
Hope this helps.

Trying to get Google Wallet working...please help?

Ok, so I know there has been a lot of talk about this already. I searched and read numerous posts but I am still having problems. I dont know if I am reading old threads about this or what but this is what i have done. I downloaded "wallet installer". Im not sure how old the version was but it did in fact change the build prop to say nexus. I installed google wallet and now the "setup tap and pay" tab was finally there. I added a card to set it up and the card was added fine. But then it says "tap and pay failed". I don't know how to fix this problem at this point. I have even tried getting an older version of google wallet, but that did not work either. I tried the xposed installer, but it didnt work either. Is it possible to get this working on our phones?

I was having the same issues as you. I would install the GW Installer, reboot to find my device ID changed to GNex, install GW from the market and set up Tap and Pay, then Restore my build.prop in the GW Installer only to find out that the TnP feature wouldn't survive the build.prop restore. (I think the problem stems from an old version of GWInstaller and the new version of GW.apk. Installer needs updated I believe)
I did it probably 6 times and failed each time. But, in the end I used Loserskater's modded version (which is the latest) and it works fine. Just uninstall any version you have of GW and then push his modded version to /system/app and set permissions, reboot. Open up GW and set up TnP and your are good to go from there.
My Google Wallet physical card should arrive today in the mail. Right in time for Christmas shopping.

Ok, so I know there has been a lot of talk about this already. I searched and read numerous posts but I am still having problems. I dont know if I am reading old threads about this or what but this is what i have done. I downloaded "wallet installer". Ok. These are not apps that you install in the traditional way (ie Package Installer). What you want to do is go the the OP of that thread I linked and download this one (com.google.android.apps.walletnfcrel-2.0-R141-V14-MODDED.apk). Then using a file explorer like Root Explorer or ES, you copy that apk and open /system/app and paste it there. Once you do that, longpress on the app and set permissions to 644 (rw-r-r). Once that is done, back out of your file explorer and reboot. Then your GW will be installed. Upon reboot, you'll see it say, Updating Apps 1 of 1.
Open you app drawer, fire up the app and set up TnP.

Ok i downladed that apk. If i go to my regular download app i see the apk but i can copy or move it from ther so i went into ES and i went to sdcardo/dowloads but dont see the apk there. Where woukd it be?

Based on your signature, are you doing this on Tapatalk? If so, then your apk is in your tapatalk default download folder (wherever you have that located) and not in the normal "downloads" folder.
I meant i "cant" copy from the regular download manager. But i dont see the apk in ES

Don't use the Download Manager.
Where is your tapatalk folder located? Give me the pathway.
Edit: Do you have a Tapatalk icon in your notificaiton bar stating that you downloaded the app?

I dont know what tapatalk is but i got a notification that it was downloaded, yes. While in ES, i searched for the apk and found it but then i tried moving it, but it wouldnt move to the system/app file. I dont know.

It says copy task failed when i try to "copy to" or move task failed when i try to "move to". Maybe its doing this because i searched for the file in ES instead of locating in manually?

Ok then. So you found the app. That is good. The reason why it won't move to /system/app is probably becuase you need to mount the /system partition in the file explorer. Since I don't use ES, I can't help you with that.
With Root Explorer, there is a button on the top left that stated "Mount R/O or Mount R/W". You need to mount your /system/app as RW.
Edit:
Here is how to mount it and where to find the settings to do so with ES.

Refer to my post just before your last one.
In your screen shot, look at the Blue !, See the very end where it says Read-Only file system? That is what I mean about you needing to make it Read-Write.
Lol..so close, yet so far. I think that link you just sent explains how to get the ES app. Im confused because after reading that thread i dont see where it explains how to make the wallet apk file writeable to be able to copy and paste to system/app using ES.

Would you be able to help me better if i purchased root explorer? I will do that if so.

I see two selections for R/o and R/w....i can make "path" r/o and r/w.....and i can also make "system" r/0 or r/w. So i do r/w on both or no?

The link that I posted was to show you how to use ES file explorer to mount /system.
You don't need to do anything to the Wallet app other than copy/paste.

That is your choice. All you would have to do is re-read this thread and follow the instuctions I posted earlier.

Yes. Make system RW. Then copy yout Wallet apk after you do that to /system/app. Longpress to set permissions to 644 (rw-r-r) and reboot.
Let's get someone else in here that might know more about ES.
Paging @Perseus71
Ok i got it to copy to system/app. When i long press it highlighta the app. Then i go to properties and i see permissions but it doesnt give me option to write anything. It has a change button.
