Hi,
Hope this is the right forum for this question. If not, moderators please feel free to move it....
I just bought an S III along with an insurance plan, but cancelled it the next day because I was misled by the salesperson. Now I'm looking around to see if there's a better plan available. I found a thread here recommending EnSquared over SquareTrade, but no other comparisons.
I called AT&T about their insurance (offered through Asurion) and was told the deductible is $199! I've emailed Asurion to ask if this is also true for a policy ordered online.
EnSquared is the cheapest policy I've found (except for ProtectCell, which doesn't cover theft or loss, essential coverage for me), and as far as I can tell, the deductible is only $75. The one negative I've found is that there's a waiting period of 31 days. Safeware has a $50 deductible but would cost me $91/yr. as opposed to $59 for EnSquared.
I've also looked at ProtectYourBubble, reasonably priced with a 14-day waiting period but a $100 deductible. I tried to find information for ToughCell but they just want my email address.
Can anyone give me any help deciding between these?
Thanks!
I have best buy geek squad coverage. No deductible but you need to purchase the phone from them.
Also they don't cover lost/stolen phones which isn't a problem for me because renters coverage takes care of that.
But took my screen protector off and haven't looked back. If I do drop or otherwise screw up my phone.. Get a replacement /refurbished /fixed phone for no deductible!

+1 on best buy protection. I brought in 3 s2's because of usb issues. Had my refurb replacements within 3 days, no deductible. Costs $10 a month. Covers water damage to completely destroyed phone, just not lost/stolen

I have mine insured through my homeowners insurance. I pay $4 a year to have it as an "additional insured item" and I have no deductible. I've already used it once for my previous phone, and they just give you the cash to buy a new one.
Insurance companies don't advertise this, but it's worth calling your agent to find out!

That's exactly why I have renters insurance though I own my home lol.. It's like 15/month but I insured 15,000 of camera equipment as additional insured items. If I ever have a big claim my home owners doesn't know about it and don't have to worry about it going up.. Renters insurance all the way.
Farmers renters insurance is cheap. Just call your local rep from yellow pages and add anything important.. Tablets /phones /cameras /jewelry etc

I did squaretrade. Found a coupon someplace, paid about $100 for 2 years of coverage, $100 deductible. It was very fast, sent my cracked screen in on a Monday, had a repaired item back on Thursday. Not the same phone, but the one I got back was perfect.
Thanks for the help, everyone. bfinleyui, I did a search for "SquareTrade coupon" and found a bunch. I haven't been able to determine if they cover theft or loss of the phone, though. Can you tell me?

I am debating on insurance. I usually buy it and have used it on past phones. However Sprints is 8 bucks a month and you have to buy in first 30 days. I have heard debate that Square Trade or Protect My bubble are cheaper, faster, and less hoops.
With Protect my bubble you get 6 months to buy from time phone purchased. This can save some money as if you lost or damaged your phone within 6 months dont buy the insurance then buy it and wait the 14 days and then make claim. Would save some but Dont know about that comapany.
With Square trade you get 3 months to and no waiting period. But you pay the $69 up front for years coverage. That is the cheapest and they are a known great company.
Both have 100 buck deductible.
Any ideas?>
Thanks
I usually do my upgrade at best buy where i buy their black tie protection which is $10 a month... it includes drops but not lost phones and there is no deductible

If there was no deductible I would consider buying it but say your phone breaks after a year. You just spent $8 a month on insurance and now you have to spend another $100 to get a new phone!? By that point your phone will be at a similar price or less on eBay/Craigslist. Personally I just throw a case on my phone and don't worry about insurance.

My insurance plan is just to hang on to my previous phone once I've upgraded. If I break, lose or brick my new phone I just fall back to the old phone until I can buy another. Since I usually upgrade ever 6-9 months, even my *old* phone is still basically new.
I use best buy. They cover scratches, breaks, batteries etc... You have no deductible and have no limit on using it.

The plus to Best buy is no deductable. The negative is not insured against lost or stolen and I have had to use that option twice in 5 years...
yeah I just had the run down about 3 hours ago. My og evo broke so we looked online to find the Epic was $50 at best buy. I had the freedom upgrade gift card so phone was free.
When he was explaining all the differences....it seemed Best Buy had the best protection plan. $10 month no deductible. I've always had sprint protection/insurance before (but never used it) but they went up in price lately have have that $100-$125 deductible.
I still didn't sign up though, but have 30 days to decide.
Does anyone have any experience with Best Buy's protection plan? Do they try and screw ya when you try and make a claim?

Best Buys protection plan was great back in what I like to call "the day"... It was truly no hassle with immediate replacement by a new device or the latest upgrade if your device was no longer available. Around 2003 all of these perks were changed and I've been with Asurion ever since. While it is a tad more pricy and has a deductible, their customer service is best in class and they ship everything overnight. Great experience with them for almost 10 years.

From my perspective, it depends on how much a new phone costs me and the deductible. For instance, if I have insurance on the phone for say $8 a month, that's $192 in the span of my contract that I'm gong to pay no matter what. Then there's the deductible that's normally about $100 or so.
To me, that's almost $300. So unless I literally have the newest and latest and greatest phone that will be released for the next 6 months or so, I pass and just opt out. It's actually cheaper to just buy most phones outright. For instance, you can find yourself an Epic 4G Touch on eBay for less than paying $8 for 2 years.

This is an excellent point. There is a point where you start to spend more in insurance+deductibles than what the phone is worth and can find the same one or comparable online at a great price.
So, I'm eligible on Wed. to upgrade and get myself the S3. My question is whether to insure it or not? I believe it's now $11/month and $150 deductible? Thoughts?

I went with the best buy insurance. There is no deductible but they do not cover lost or stolen phones. Plus if you pay for the full 2 years at once they give you a discount. I believe it came out to $170, which is about $7 a month.

This is the number 1 reason I went with Sprint's TEP.
Worst case, I pay $150 for a new phone, and if it an actual hardware issue (not water or something "I" did) Sprint replaces it for free.
I got a replacement ET4G (bad GPS), and 2 replacement Samsung Moments (Bad USB Ports) all for free. Also got a replacement moment when it was less than 2 months old (stolen) for $100.
IMO, if you don't have some sort of insurance on your phone, you're nuts.
over two years with insurance if you file a claim, you will spend $414. if you break your phone without insurance the phone will cost $549.
personally, i have two children under three years old that throw objects very well. that includes cell phones laying around, so i have insurance on it
if you break your phone without insurance the phone will cost $549.
YOu're forgetting phone prices come down substantially after the first 6 months...
Personally I have only needed insurance once... paid 150 deductible for what would have cost me at most $200 to buy off ebay/craigslist for the same 'used' phone. Could have saved myself the year of premiums.
Didn't buy the insurance on the S3...remember manufacturer defects are still covered under it's warranty as well. (Though I don't recall how long that is just now... 90 day, or 1 yr).

I opted out of insurance. I got the HD2 a month before it was released when I worked for t-mobile and just recently sold it when I bought this phone through sprint. I just go out of my way to be careful wIth a phone.

Personnal preference is squaretrade. Wait for a 30% discount and it will be $95 for two years of coverage
Insurance, isnt always for you. its a given that youll be babying your phone. it covers the world around you. Sprint - Asurion TEP bills your cellphone to your account at your request. the only caveat is that its 150 dollar every claim deductable. im replacing my galaxy s3 in an insurance claim and since its so new its still currently on backorder. but they say itll take 5-7 business days. normally if you get your claim in before 10pm you get a new device out within 24 hours. its quite nice when it works as it should.
I got the Nexus from the Play Store less than a month ago. Yesterday it got dunked in salt water when I fell into a tide pool. I have the $30/month T-Mobile month to month plan and added the $7 insurance on it.
I haven't called Asurion yet, but I'm seeing from other people on the forums that even though I purchased the insurance, my Gnex still isn't covered?
WTF? Can someone confirm?
Pretty sure they cover it.
If the phone is not available from the carrier, then Asurion will not cover it. The question has already been asked and answered in this forum. Since the GSM GN is not officially supported by any US carrier, they won't cover it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Not true. Asurion has sent me a couple letters stating that t mobile has recognized that I am not using a carrier phone so t mobile will not warranty it but that asurion still covers it under its insurance policy.

I've heard that Squaretrade has excellent customer service. I considered going with them for the GNex, but I decline insurance altogether. Chose not to go with Ascurion because I wouldn't be able to stand the monthly fee plus the deductible. At least with Squaretrade, you get your premium out of the way with one lump sum.
Look at these folks:
http://www.worthavegroup.com/
Seem to have really good rates and deductibles. Can buy up to 90 days into ownership too.
If you purchase the GNII at an AT&T store (or from anywhere really) like I did last Friday, you can hold off on the less appealing AT&T Mobile Insurance and pick up the Best Buy Protection Plan. I've done this before with the Captivate and my girlfriend was even allowed to purchase the protection when she brought in her Sensation 4G with a cracked screen then come back in a week to replace it. My experience today started off by being told no by a general store manager when he overheard me asking but was later told it would be allowed by the specific mobile dept manager. Not all stores may be so lenient so you may have to try a couple times and be super nice. There must be a fairly hefty incentive for employees signing up protection plans.
Basic Diference in plans
AT&T Mobile Insurance: $10/month plus $200 at time of replacement
BB Protection Plan: $10/month and NO deductible upon replacement
There are a few more smaller difference but they generally favor the BB plan. Normally I would buy from BB in the first place but they are apparently having a delayed launch. The location I went to today still didn't know when they were being allowed to start selling. This may be something most XDA users know about but with all the insurance posts lately I thought I'd share incase it helps someone pull the trigger on the NII.
I purchased my Note 2 outright for $650 at a Best Buy mobile, and got the 2 year accidental damage replacement plan. Bought the plan outright as well being that it is much cheaper than paying $10/month. (Doesn't hurt that they gave me a discount for buying it all at once either).
Over all their plan is better than what AT&T offers, especially having no deductible and no limit to replacements. But it does NOT cover loss or theft. For that duty I am using Cerberus, and I am 100% pleased with bolth the phone and Replacement plan.

This is true. You should be able to do this. A manager will not turn this plan down because it is almost pure profit. This is applicable to almost any product. You must make sure it is a product carried by Best Buy. Usually you have 2 weeks from you date of purchase. Note: they will leverage the Samsung 1 year warranty. If you purchase the accidental plan they will cover the damage out right. Also don't forget Square Trade.
So people will unfortunately lose their jobs at best buy for this. Best Buy only offers the geek squad protection on iphones not purchased at best buy. Not other phones. If a manager is allowing this, it is strictly to boost their numbers on a scorecard, meanwhile losing it all and more on the back side of the business.

It's a tough decision for me to buy insurance since it ends up being the cost of another device on contract. Now that Nexus phones are $300, I don't think I'll get insurance on my note. I extended my apple care on my iphone 4 and never broke it. Never damaged my 4S either, and both were used case-less.
However if I decided to get insurance, the best buy route seems like the best one.
Got it. $169 for two years, seemed like the only logical way to go considering that $9.99 a month costs an extra $80.
I feel dumb as hell asking this now and assuming it in store, but does this plan cover accidental damage? Assumed it did, but I'm now seeing documentation that it doesn't. Not a deal-breaker either way, as the normal wear-and-tear and pixel damage/burn-in protection made the purchase more than worthwhile.
Edit to add: Very little was made of the fact that it wasn't purchased at Best Buy. When I walked up to the mobile counter, the sales rep and department manager were there, along with the store GM. I asked about covering the phone, and the only question was asked by the store GM: "You bought it directly from AT&T, right? Not Amazon or eBay or anyplace like that?". I answered yes, and they got to work on it. No asking for a receipt or anything, just cranked out the sales plan.
That's awesome. Best buy is the way to go!

They are "supposed" to only sell the Geek Squad Protection with phones that are purchased directly from Best Buy. But if they let you do it, then just keep your documentation and you should be set. :good:
Its covers normal wear & tear, moisture damage, charging failures, battery replacement, and screen breaks. Does NOT cover full submersion in liquid, or crazy negligent damage like being run over by a car, or thrown against a wall. Nor does it cover contact with bodily fluids.... eww.
Basically if you drop your phone, break your screen, anything that can normally happen like that, you should be covered just fine. Anything more exotic, and it will be up to the discretion of the associate that is processing your repair.
Well, I don't plan on going snorkeling with my phone (although I did spend half an hour in a pool once before I realized that my old Verizon flip phone was in my pocket), nor do I intend to play racquetball with it, you know, as the ball. I'm also leaning decidedly against running over it with a vehicle, or trying to use it as a frisbee. Yep, should be set. :good:

best insurance I found is worth ave group.
with coupon codes its $66.20 a year for $2000 in coverage unlimited usage and $25 deductible.
Covers damage and theft but not loss then again if its lost IT IS stolen so file a police report.
sprints TEP is $11 a month in other words $132 a year AND the deductible is $200 !!! and IIRC you can only use it once a year (I could be wrong on that)
I think worth without coupon code is $75 a year or something like that. way way cheaper and better than sprints tep and it covers all your toys (I have all my phones my laptop and my camera's on it)

Sprints coverage has 2 parts. One is insurance and the other is tep. The insurance is from asurion, you pay 200 and they ship you a new phone and you get it by the next business day. The tep which is total equipment protection is used whenever you have a problem with your phone that isn't covered under warranty anymore. For example if your speaker goes out they will fix it for free or if like me your screen starts messing up they will get you a whole new phone. If not for that then I would have to take the Samsung warranty and they ask that you mail it to them, wait while they fix it and then they ship it back. It can take from 2 to 3 weeks. Sprint will still check your phone but fixing it will cost 35 or more I believe. I think its 8 for insurance and 5 for tep, but I believe the insurance used to be 6. Not quite sure about any of this as it is just off the top of my head. I do know that the 11 or 13 package has 2 parts.
I have best buy insurance. $169 one time charge (you can opt for monthly) and no deductible ever.
Guaranteed 5 day turn around, they give you a loaner in the meantime.
I don't think they cover theft, perhaps if you have a police report.

best buy does not cover lost or stolen

Best buy covers absolutely everything except lost or stolen. Unlimited claims and no deductible! They order you a new phone and give you a loaner If you need one. As far as lost or stolen, if you have their geek squad, there is a free app called locked And found that tracks where your phone is and takes pictures of what it sees with the front facing camera (a thiefs face maybe?) and reports to a website only you have access to.
For those who have the protection plan get a hold of your gsp# off your receipt because the app asks for it, or call best buy mobile.

The best buy program is junk. I had it and tried to get it fixed while traveling. First of all the replacement store would only give me a loner if I was able to return it to the same store. Now someone traveling like I was is screwed plus the loner was any phone not the same phone. The second issue was they said my phone wasn't broke enough because my problem was intermittent. They actually told me to go back to the parking and break the screen then they would replace it.

Not trying to be a argumentative but I don't think your complaints are valid.
1) I understand requiring you to return to the same store is not as convenient as possible... but creating the infrastructure to manage inter-store returns for loaner require technology investments which would surely increase the cost of insurance. Besides, most insurance programs don't even have this feature. It's inconvenient for travelers but making accomodations for such cases may not necessarily be worth the investment.
Also, loaners are temporary. To match your phone... and everyone else's, best buy must have at least one of every phone ever, for each store. (At least within the last two years). Do you expect them to open a new box everytime they dont have a matching loaner availabe?...assuming they even have them in stock?
As per your second complaint I don't know what the problem was, but bb doesn't automatically do replacements. .. instead will do repairs on fixable problems. Correct me but I believe that's what happened. They offered to do a repair but you wanted a replacement.
I think the only thing you can criticize bb for is they were asking you to commit insurance fraud.

its not even insurance. its a protection plan. similar, but not the same thing. i dont know if you can call it insurance fraud unless it is underwritten by an indemnity company.
that being said, you are correct, sir.
Sprint TEP + Kaspersky One, insurance and the ability to track, lock and wipe your phone.
You can also take pictures of the person using it.
It's win....
I dumped sprint insurance after having it on multiple phones for over 8 years. Monthly charge and deductible for the note were way too high for me. I switched to ensquared (or something like that)
