Help getting back from semi-brick - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Something has gone very wrong with my HBOOT.
Whenever my phone starts, it always goes into HBOOT without pressing any keys.
In HBOOT, I cannot press any key, so I can't get into Fastboot
I was able to get out of it once by running "ADB reboot", at which point I put a stock ROM back on, which slightly downgraded HBOOT from 0.85.0024 to 0.85.0007, but when I rebooted I was right back into HBOOT, only now I can't detect the phone in ADB, so I can't reboot it from there.
So I'm stuck on the HBOOT screen, and all I can currently do is auto run a pd98img.zip file, but I don't know what to try auto-run. Can I restore an S-off boot using a file, or do I need to use the ace root kit?

If your phone goes straight to hboot then seems that your volume rocker might be broken or stuck. Check that first. If you can not navigate in hboot could be a corrupted sdcard, so take it off and try booting again. If your volume rocker is messed, then try fixing that first otherwise success might be difficult. :good:

Strangest thing.. you were right about the volume rocker, but it was a weird problem. Several months ago, I had replaced my battery with a 2000mha one and it has worked well until now, but as I was getting ready to get the phone repaired, I swapped back to the stock battery, and the rocker came back to life! Who knew. So I am back and re-rooting and rom'ing as we speak

Yeah, weirdness happens...:silly: Glad your phone is back. I guess that the replacement battery was too big for the space in the phone....
Glad you are back..:good:

help (i hope)

Ok here is my situation....
I was able to fully root using toast's method. I than tried to flash my radio from the link the forums.
It installed everything properly, but then got stuck on the htc evo boot screen. i left it alone for 2 hours and it did nothing.
Is there something that can be done or did I brick it?
Thanks in advance.

Just turn it off, hold the volume button down and then hit the power button, this will put you in recovery so you can flash again
tried that, but it will not let me back into custom recovery. or do i have this wrong. I am still kinda new to all this.
what does it show? a red exclamation mark?
doing the volume down, then power. it brings me to that screen. errr the 3 androids on skateboards screen lol
damn 5 min wait between posts lol. ima be at this all night it looks like lol.
once you are there, you should be able to reboot into recovery. right when you enter that screen it should start looking for PCIMG36.zip and once it can't find that, a menu should pop up. scroll down the menu using the volume button until you hit recovery. press your power button and it should boot you into recovery. if it takes you to a screen with a red exclamation point, then you would need to plug in your phone to your pc and run the bat file that came in the first part of rooting instructions to get into recovery.
once i hit recovery from that menu, it takes me right back to the htc evo splash screen and locks up.
i really do not understand this. all these reports of this radio installing with no issue and I get this >.> ah well. i guess i knew the risks when i started this.
well if your phone can still boot up then it's definitely not bricked. did you try a battery pull and reboot?
yeah....well that is good to know anyway lol.
how do these terminal emulators work, and can i get one on my phone in this condition?
I am reading the sd and usb fix thread...but i don't understand how to run the emulator on the phone.

Excellent idea, just go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685835 and download the RUU.
Once you run this you are back to stock and will have to re-root your phone via toasts instructions. Hopefully this works
tried that as well. It says there is no phone connected.
I dont know man, you gotta try combinations. Like hold the volume down to get to that recovery and then try to run the RUU perhaps?
believe i am trying everything lol. i even put the pcimg file back on and try to go from that but the phone does not even recognize it now meh it's a process. at least i know there is some hope lol
i don't have an evo (yet), but when you get into the bootloader screen (with the androids on skateboards), is there an option to go to Fastboot mode? if you RUU, that's the mode you wanna be in.
ok i put the original pc36img back on the card and got it to boot back into android!!!!!!
so now i have the root pc36img file on there. I am scared to keep going and rerooting it lol
Will i have to redo it all? I am not sure where to go from here.
everything seems to be working again.
any advice for me now? should i RUU it and just go back to stock or can i keep going from this point with the root steps again? (this time leaving the radio flash alone lol)
If you were able to get root in the first place, you are fine.
Download Flipz Stock Rom with Superuser. No flashing radios necessarily. Just flashing an update.
And you are set. You will be rooted with stock rom. Supposedly.
I did manage to get it fixed last night. Now I am fully rooted and running the fresh rom.
I really appriciate all the advice from everyone who was on here at 4am with me lol. Kinda sucks my first posts on here had to be about breaking my phone, but you guys are awesome!
I got stuck in a boot loop once too when trying to flash a rom. It was because I didn't clear the Data/Stock Image. I had cleared Cache/Dalvik, but not data.

stuck on start up screen. cant do anything.

Ok, I have been looking for a solution to my problem, without any solution so far. I temp-rooted my phone with visionary. As soon as I rebooted my phone, the furthest I could get is the HTC load screen. I have set up every zip I could find in hopes that one would let me set my phone back to operational status. Nothing is working. Does anyone know what I can do to get back. If you need more information, please let me know.
Try the Q&A forum, which is the right place for questions like this
Can you get into recovery or fastboot? Try holding down the volume button while holding down power when powering on. Also, try holding the action button while holding the power button while powering on. If nothing happens then your almost out of luck. If you get fastbook (white screen with multicolored text as opposed to recoveries one color and black screen) you can adb push a rom onto your phone and fix it.
I didn't have a problem with visionary but I think my phone was rooted when I got it.

I am s-on. or at least I was. I have been following the link you sent me, but I cant do anything because it is constantly saying the device is offline. it was an ota g2.
Can you get into hboot ? With the phone off, hold Volume Down then press Power.
If you can get into hboot then at least you can flash a ROM from your SD card.
If you can get into recovery from hboot, then you can use adb from there, but you can't use adb if the phone is stuck at the startup logo.
Sometimes it seems that if you go into the stock recovery (when you see the screen with the red triangle, hold Volume Up and then press Power), you can try mounting everything you can to see if that makes a difference to being able to boot.

ADB will not connect to my phone. It recognizes it, but says it is offline. How can I fix that issue?
I had the exact same problem and fixed it. Go into your hboot mode and do a factory reset from the phone.....I was stuck in a boot loop. I think I was s off at the time

You still not have awnsered any questions from the above posts. Can you get into the HBoot screen (phone off, then volume-down+power)? If yes what does the first line say on the page with the skateboarding andriods? It should say VISION PVT SHIP(orENG) S-OFF(or S-ON)? What does it say?

adb won't work while the phone is stuck in the boot loop, I said that you need to get into recovery to be able to use adb. But as joemm said, we still need you to try the other stuff that you haven't commented on, i.e. getting into hboot in the first place.
S-ON with Vision PVT SHIP
This shouldnt be happening if he was just using a temp root. It might cause instability while the phone is on, but once it turns off the root is gone, the software is reset. Did you attempt to perm root with visionary? also, if he isnt rooted, the phone will be able to recover itself easily from the boot recovery. unless he doesnt have an sdcard with the recovery on it. also this all means that if he isnt perma rooted, he wont have a custom recovery.
Anyways, Pull the battery, press the powerbutton while holding the VOLUME DOWN key, use the volume keys to select recovery after it performs the test, and select restore phone or whatever it says in the orig recovery.
edit: dont forget to put the battery back in before you turn it on.

the version of visionary that I had (r10) doesnt have the perm root option. Does visionary automatically update?
no visionary was taken off the market after version 10? i think. you'd need to have downloaded visionary from somewhere else to get version 11 or higher with the perm root. is the stock recovery working at all for you?
I don't believe it does. Updates were through different releases all the way to r14.

[Q] Possible EVO Brick

Tonight, I was trying to load the RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe and everything seemed to be going smoothly. I hit a few screens that I cannot recall exactly and am embarrassed to say but, I cleared all the cache and storage, thinking that I should do this as I have for other ROMs that I have loaded.
The curious question is always "why were you loading that?" I need to send my phone back to sprint because of a warranty issue. Nothing hardware related, just a screen that is loose. In order to make sure that I have a good device, I wanted to send them an original type device. Now that we have that out of the way, here is where I am.
First off, I am somewhat new but have changed ROMs around a lot; Baked Snack, CyanogenMod, Fresh, etc. I like trying out different versions to see what they do.
I saw that I needed to have my SD formatted to FAT32, so I have already done that.
I also have PC36IMG.zip loaded to my SD root.
The symptoms that I am experiencing are:
1. If I hit the power button while pushing the up volume, i get 3 vibrations and thats it. Nothing ever comes on the screen.
2. If I just turn on the device, I get the recovery screen. Once it finds the PC36IMG.zip, it starts loading and has a blue status bar on the right that goes from bottom to top as it loads.
After that, I am pretty much in the endless loop. If I restart it in recovery after that, it gives me the red triangle with a red bang.
The only thing that it will do is boot into recovery and that is it. It seems pretty well blanked out.
For diagnostic, here is what the screen says when i get into recovery:
Supersonic EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0-79.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PAMEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-1.39.00.04.26
April 14 2010,15:41:34
I am beside myself and humbly ask for anyones advice on what a good step would be to get this thing running again.
I thank you for taking time to read my plea.
OK...
1)The first thing I would recommend is to delete the PC36IMG.zip from the sdcard otherwise everytime you boot into the bootloader it will ask to flash it and it will just waste time. There are a number of PC36IMG files around here and they are not all the same. It is a generic name for the RUU and if you try and flash the wrong one it won't work. And, that seems to have happened to you.
2)The white screen you arrive at by holding down the volume down button and tapping the power button is called the bootlader. Take note of that because we'll need it in a minute.
3) Downloaded the stock Sprint unrooted RUU. It needs to be the same version or newer than what's already on your phone but since you are sending it in anyway I recommend just downloading the newest one (3.7.651...) Here is a link:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
4)Download HTC Sync and install it on your computer. You can get it from HTC's site or Sprint or through a google search. It will install the necessary drivers to your computer to see the phone. [EDIT] Here is a link:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/
5) Once all the above is done boot the phone into the bootloader (hold volume down and tap the power button while still holding the volume down button). When the menu shows up use the volume keys to navigate to "FASTBOOT" and press the power button to select and enter FASTBOOT. Plug the phone into your PC and run the RUU.exe you just downloaded and it will return it to a completely stock unrooted state.
6) Breathe easy and take phone back to Sprint.
Thanks!!!
Worked like a flippin' charm!!!
Thank you very much for your help. Everything is fine and I am setting it back up to get me through until I can turn it back in.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.. and did I say Thank You!
Been trying to figure out how to use the RUU for two hours... this was the clearest most concise instructions for the process.

[Q] htc desire wierd bootloop

Hey guys,
my htc desire was working fine one minute the next it reboots, and gets stuck at the htc white screen i leave it there for 10-15 minutes and then pull the battery out as its not getting anywhere(or so i think at this point) and now when ever i try and boot my phone it goes straight into hboot and i cant use the down vol key its wierd like the buttons are swapped around i use the normal buttons in hboot go into recovery to reboot and they swap, down button is confirm up is up, trackball is down and when i hit reboot, it goes back to hboot, i tried a factory reset and a dalvik cache wipe, any other ways i could try and get my desire back on its feet, warrenty is out the question as its second hand but the phone was working fine and the only thing i dont know is what ruu to try, should i just try them all?
I guess you have a gsm desire.
If you have a branded desire, download the latest one from your provider you can find here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
If you have a unbranded desire, download this ruu:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
Boot your phone into fastboot mode (start with pressed back and power button or enter bootloader from hboot menu with power button) and then run the downloaded exe on your computer.

Hello there,
Since I have a 'stuck at the boot screen' problem, I am considering flashing a RUU back into my Desire.
Can a RUU be flashed on custom Recovery & hboot (AmonRA, S-OFF etc)?

no, a RUU is flashed on fastboot from your computer, or as a PB99IMG.zip from bootloader.
right i did a ruu and it ran ok and got through fine so thats the phone unrooted now, but its still in the bootloop, i'm gonna take it apart and clean the buttons as they seem to be a badguy in this scenario, but when i go to power on the device doesnt vibrate or anything it just goes straight into hboot
I FIXED IT! turned out it wasnt even broken, the contacts on the volume down button were broken and always touching so that was why it was always booting into hboot, luckily i wanted to unroot my phone xD but now the challenge is to fix the contacts any ideas on ways i could do this on the cheap so i can use the buttons again? currently the contacts are blocked with bluetack in order to stop them touching xD

[Q] Bricked Dinc... Any Help?

So while trying to unroot my Droid Incredible, I managed to brick it. Basically, I used what was on theunlockr.com and it didn't work out. I did this process:
How To: Unroot the HTC Incredible | TheUnlockr
Basically, I downloaded the PB31IMG.zip file and placed it on the root of the SD. I then rebooted into HBOOT, ran the update, and rebooted. Now the phone won't turn on. I try going into HBOOT (volume down+power) and just regular boot and neither are working. After pulling the battery and replacing it, I press and hold the power key to have it do a quick vibrate one time, but still nothing happens with the screen.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you cant get into hboot, and you cant boot normaly, im sorry to say you have bricked your phone.
You could try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825960.
Also try reformating your sdcard fat32, then put a stock PB31IMG.zip on the sd. Hold down power and vol down for 10 secs then release and wait for 10 mins then press vol up. After a couple secs the phone may then reboot, wait another 15 mins and press vol up again. Hopefully then it will restart and boot like normal. It basicly blind flashing an ruu, it may work if the phone is on and responding but you just cant see screen output.

which screen type do you have amoled or slcd? sounds like you might have flashed the wrong one.
anyways. try the ruu.exe method instead
http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-...mplest-instructions-ever-windows-xp-only.html
no need to see the screen if you let the pc do the work for you.
Thanks! I completely forgot about this posting. I'll have to give these methods a try.
