Can a custom kernel be used on a locked bootloader? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone can't unlock the boot loader. How can I install kernels?

No. We can install custom kernels only if bootloader is unlocked.

Unlockable bootloader means we are stuck with stock kernel.
Still, there are some very neat ROMs that support stock kernel. check my signature

What the guys above said. I installed Xperia Pureness[Build 13][4.0.4] recently too on my locked BL Arc and I can say Im very pleased.

Hold on a sec I'm confused, here they say I can flash a kernel? (post 9)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992512

Can i ask a question? What stock rom did you use ICS with build number .431 or .587 for xperia pro? Based in your signature, you're using xperia ultimate hd rom, and i'm planning to try that rom for my mk16i. Thanks.ü

It says you can flash a stock kernel, not a custom.
And that's true.

no kidding?
wow.. but it says will only work on unlock bootloader.. mine is locked..
i just want to make sure that it will brick my phone..
this will be an expensive paper weight if that happens..
I've had a locked BL and that CWM recovery installed.
Then I unlocked my BL, flashed a kernel and the recovery and the backups where still there.

my bootloader is still locked.. i want to know if i can flash it even though it is still locked.. i still have no plans of unlocking my bootloader.. maybe i have to wait a little more before i can decide of unlocking it.. i am not worrying about losing my recovery, i am concern of bricking my phone..
Yes, you can flash it even with locked BL.

[Q] Q : about custom roms and ICS

Hello Guys
I saw this custom rom ..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599906
so my question is if I installed this ICS custom rom
and I didn't like it can I back to the original firmware via flashtool ?
and does this custom room needs unlocked bootloader .
Thanks
If its an ICS you will need a kernel, so you will need an unlocked boot loader to flash the kernel, every time you see this rom requires this kernel, you will need an unlocked bootloader

Arc S BL Unlock

I've unlocked my BL using Flashtool and the Unlock Code generated via the Sony BL Unlocking website. I wondered if there was a way to find out if the BL Unlock had worked?

Go to service menu *#*#7378423#*#*
& go to Service info/ configuration.
To check Bootloader unlocked - Yes.
Or try flashing a custom kernel [email protected] Fastboot.
If it tells in fastboot Device must be rooted. Means that ur BL is not unlocked.
If flashing progress Finished Successfully .then ur BL is surely 200% unlocked

I flashed the FXP128 Kernel using Flashtool Fastboot mode, now my phone is in a continual boot loop, so I think the BL is Unlocked, but there seems to be a problem with the Flash.
Is there anyway to recover to a working phone or is it terminally bricked?

I didn't Install the ROM as I was unable to get to the SONY Splash Screen to enter CWM to Flash Paranoid Android.
I managed to get my phone to Install the latest stock Sony Kernel.
I might have to find a decent AOSP ROM that runs on stock Kernel.

If you've flashed an FXP kernel then you should be able to enter CWM.

ROMs for Locked Bootloader

Hi XDA, I've got an Xperia Play that's rooted with a locked bootloader running ICS, I've used the method in this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762372. So far all I've done is gotten it rooted and cwm installed. However, anytime I try to flash a different ROM over I get bootloop, hangs on the Sony logo. I've tried the installing the following ROMs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877297
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719746
If it makes any difference, I never attempted to install the ROM found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790615) before trying any other ROMs, I just went straight into the ROMs listed above but no luck. So, my question is, what is the best MIUI or AOSP ROM for an Xperia Play with a locked bootloader, and how can I install it?
The roms you were trying to flash needs custom kernel which means you need to unlock bootloader, that's why you get bootloop. For AOSP and MIUI roms you need custom kernel which means you need to unlock bootloader. As for locked bootloader you can only use the locked bootloader ICS by vokal and Markphyton ICS.

I also found one MIUI ROM that said it could be installed on locked bootloader, don't remember where I found it but it said for locked bootloader put the nandroid backup in the recovery folder and install from there, which I did. It got past the Sony logo but then hung at a black screen. How can I unlock my bootloader? My phone status says my bootloader cannot be unlocked, though I figure there must be a way. Can anyone help me out please? Also, thanks for your reply.

I use to have that problem with stock based roms... Try do a full wipe and format system before you flash... The format system bit is important might just fix the boot loop it worked for me before when I installed markphytons rom...but when u format system you will lose cwm so your going to have to install it again

I still have yet to try markphytons ROM since I've wanted to use others, but I guess I have no other option and it's probably better than the ROM that the ROM I'm currently running.
I was under the impression that any ROM based on stocked ICS would work with the above method, is this not true? Where can I find ROMs based on stock ICS 4.0.4? I've searched but haven't had much luck...
Yea that's what I thought aswell but never tried any other roms...i always revert back to gb... It doesn't really make a difference which stock base Rom you flash they all have the same camera and gamepad problem I think

You cant run ics on your xperia play because ICS requires a ICS kernal. You are currently using a GB kernel (locked bootloader) and ICS cant use a GB kernel.
Of course you can run ICS for locked bootloader it's created by vokal1992 but it runs very slow but you can try his/her kickass Gin2JellyBean ROM

[Q] XTXperience 9 problem. don't bite my head off guys.

I am pretty new to flashing ROMS and rooting. I rooted my S2 back in 2011. but since then I haven't. So i though I would do it with the Xperia S.
I installed XTXperience 9, unlocked bootloader. rooted n fastboot. I downloaded cwm recovery. cleared everything. installed the ROM, and It has got stuck in boot loop.
I was on the 6.1.A.2.45 firmware if that helps?
could someone please give me some short instructions and tell me what I am doing wrong I need this ROM looks so cool!
Please don't bite my head off either. I need help. it's only way i'll learn
Please someone
If you have unlocked bootloader, why don't you install a custom kernel? Like Advanced ICS Kernel, ELiTE, etc.

Not sure how to do that yet. would that possibly fix the boot loop I am having??
I've never installed a recovery manually, because I've always flashed a custom kernel with a recovery included, maybe that's why you're having a boot loop but I'm not sure.
If you already unlocked the bootloader you should flash a stock based kernel and that's it.

If you already have you bootloader unlocked just flash a custom kernel! If you flash a ROM after that, it will be pre-rooted.
