[Q] Your advice and suggestions! - HTC Wildfire S

Hi peeps,
Ok...this is my dilemma. For some time now I have been using a HTC Wildfire phone as my work provided them for the staff. We have all been in the same opinion that the phones cause us daily problems with calls dropping, phone freezing, etc etc.
I personally have a Samsung S2 which has been great, although sadly the custom rom I have on it is no longer been developed so that's another issue to tackle another day.
Because I have to use the Wildfire daily I am looking to try and load a rom to make life easier and less problematic. So I would be grateful for suggestions and advice on a rom I could look at installing into the phone, thanks :good:

Firstly just to be sure this is a "Wildfire S" forum not "Wildfire". Huge difference between both. Just making sure you are in right direction.
You may wanna root your phone and try a improved version of stock ROM assuming you need sense 2.1. I haven't used many sense 2.1 roms but Mindhaxor or disciple 1 is my favorite. Get them from android forums.
I personally use MIUI v4 for daily use. It's great.

Cheers really appreciate your advice on this, after looking at videos on youtube to check and it would seem that it's not the "S" version at all....whoops....sorry about that.
Will now venture onto the Wildfire forum lol! :good:

[Q] What ROM To Use?

I am ready to dive in with the Unrevoked3 method to root my Desire, I take it I will then be able to load a custom ROM, however I'm a little overwhelmed by the choices. Is there a comprehensive list somewhere or can someone make any suggestions? I'm after stability and reliability although I am interested in what the whole ROM scene has to offer.
I presume that all my paid apps will still work as well?
i would stick to the rom you are using because if you have to ask that question, you haven't done enough research, if there was a single answer to what rom to use, then there wouldn't be so many around
so the final answer is, stick to the stock froyo that you've got already, there's nothing to be gained from other roms considering you didn't specify what it is you were looking for

I thought I said I'm after stability and reliability, and also app2sd+ in particular. Does that help?
Yes I am doing research, this question is part of the 'research' process. Thanks for your help.

Your way of research really puzzles me looking at the bold parts in your OP below.

- Yes, you should be able to flash a custom rom, if you can follow the instructions.
- There is no comprehensive list, the number of rom's and the changes are to large to keep it up to date, or do you offer to create one
- suggestions will tell you to use rom a, b, s, or z, depending on the users preferences. The only thing you can do is to read the rom description, and start skimming and following the rom's which description you liked.
A thing you left out, and what is normally mentioned in a question like this, do you prefer sense or non-sense?
To finish: I use LeeDroiD V2.1 and I am happy with it, it's stable / reliable, and it's Sense based.
Now just wait for the OD, DeFrost, Pays, Cyanogen (just some examples) and other rom users to give there opinion,
and then decide
^^ pretty much what he said!!
No one can tell you what to use, only give their opinions. Ultimately you'll have to read the threads and just try the ROMs until you find one you're happy with. I've gone back to stock as it does what I need it to
i just love when dudes get all condescending as if they were never overwhelmed when they first started out. first they yell at you and infer that you're an idiot and then 4 posts later, they wind up actually helping.
i guess it's like hazing for nerds.
seriously though, i'm gonna answer all your questions right here and now:
go with CM6. then download another one and try it. then download another one and try it. and then... come back here and tell us what your opinion is. you know, pay it forward and don't become one of those condescending dorks after you have figured it all out.
that is all. i'm going bowling with your father...

Well, when you don't get out much and you don't have many friends.. We should be more sympathetic to 'special needs' people.
Anyway, I'm on AuraxTsense now (check my sig for full details). I like the concept of undervolting for extended battery life, however before I dive in to ROMs, what can cause damage? I will avoid overclocking ROMs for that reason, anything else to watch out for?
What's the advantage of Cyanogen over others? I also read that Modaco ROMs are designed with stability in mind.
Is there any way to back up settings to restore when switching ROMs? Or should I just back each one up with all my settings and use that?
In the last week or so I've tried at least
- Cyanogen
- PirateRUM
- Some PAYS Sense one
- OpenDesire
- ShadowSense
+ another 1 or 2 I forget now
with Alex-V's one still to try.
The main thing I'd say is:
- Do you want Sense?
- Do you want GApps and other fluff preinstalled?
Try them and see...
Personally
- I like OD but it needs the Sense music player
- CM has no market, and I have not worked out how cutdown it's GApps package yet to remove fluff
I have been using cyanogenmod 6 for a few days now.
And im not going anywere anytime soon
However, like they say, try em all
Aurax is rocking my boat right now although struggling to work out how to install Maps..
What do you like about Cyanogen?
The ui is good. It just works. Try out for yourself. Painless to install. Ohh and the battery performance is alot better then the stock rom

Dude... reply to the newer threads. At least november 2012.

[Q] Rooted Phone (YAY!).... Which ROM to use?!?!!?

I know this has probably been asked to death, but the suggested results returned nothing...
Did a titanium backup, and a rom manager backup Via clockwork..... But now i cannot decide on which ROM to use!
It also doesnt help that when im reading specs... i have NO idea what 70% of it means, so its hard to base my own decision. So.....
Which ROM do you use? What are its best features? Is it a noticeable difference from Stock to Custom? Are they buggy? I have so many questions, but dont wanna be a bother... So maybe if you could just give me benefits of the one you use, that would be great.
Thank you
So long as you've got your backup, just go ahead and try some of the roms that are out there. If you don't like a particular rom, flash another.
Personally I like the Sense based roms, I have tried others but I keep going back to Sense. I'm currently using InsertCoin which based on a Desire HD rom, small fonts compared to the Desire, but other features including Skins (themes), HTCSense.com phone finder (which doesn't always work).
Are you wanting to try a non Sense based rom? There are plenty out there to play with, MIUI, Cyanogen, Gingerbread roms too.
In this forum, there is a thread which compares all the available ROM's (I'll post the link once I find it)
As @UKseagull mentioned, try different ROM's , You might find a suitable one for you !
Jeeezus ****ing christ. There needs to be a sticky to say that a rom is a rom that YOU, the user must decide on. It is not about what we think, it is about what you think. Your own PERSONAL PREFERENCE!
This is prob the 10th thread this week about that same topic.

Why are you so angry if someone asks a perfectly in place question?!
There are really many roms for the Desire, and I am _sure_ most of them are not stable.
So, if a newbee asks which rom should he try, an experienced flasher could point to the most stable rom. One with Sense, one without. This is very valuable information.
Why should EVERYBODY flash 10 roms before he/she finds a stable one?!
When I was flashing roms on my previous winmo phone, I was ALWAYS responding to such questions to my best knowledge.
And, yes, there are many same threads, because MANY people want to know about this and cannot find ANY info.
So, in short, either answer the man or shut up!

I'm using InsertCoin at the moment which is a ported HD ROM and seems really good. If you want to stick with non HD then LeeDroid is great.

He's angry because it's like the 10th time people ask the same (stupid) question over and over again. In the development part you can find plenty of topics about roms. Some of them are stable, some of the are not, you can read it all in their specific thread. Read, read, read, that's all you have to do here. I'm a noob too and I've been reading like 4 weeks here before I decided to flash a certain rom (leedroid), and it works great.
It's a shame that XDA doesn't have a poll similar to the ZTE - which rom poll over at Modaco, a quick look and you can see which are the most popular roms in use at that point in time. http://android.modaco.com/content/z...omisation/329997/poll-what-rom-are-you-using/
The OP asked a question because they probably value advice from the more experienced rom flashers here , those that are willing to give advice will do so. Yes, rom choice is an individual preference but there's really no need for people to reply with derogatory comments, just ignore the thread and leave it to the others that are willing to help.

Read? Did you not READ where i said that the specs mean NOTHING cause i dont exactly understand what im "Getting" in a rom? Im pretty computer literate, and have only had my desire (or android in general), for maybe 3 weeks. This is all new to me. Ive sim unlocked and rooted thus far without confusion or asking for help.
Its just the specs. Theres so much **** in them that i dont understand that its hard to pick one. Intimidating sorta.
Thanks to all that helped. I think im going to try leedroid. Its sense based, which i like over vanilla from what ive seen.
I come from LeeDroid which is an awesome Sense ROM. Currently though I use Redux which is senseless. What can I say, I like it minimalistic. I also prefer to decide myself what apps should be installed on -my- phone.
I wish Lee came out with a clean AOSP build... Or I figured out how to use his kernel and build my own.
Anyway good luck.

I've been using LeeDroid for several months now with no issues at all. If you check his minisite out, he lists all the apps you can safely remove from the zip prior to flashing without damaging it. That way you are only installing the bare minimum required to run a Sense ROM and you then just add the bits you want.
Personally I only run a Sense ROM because I like the HTC dialer, clock and phonebook over the vanilla Android ones. I use launcher pro which just seems to be snappier than Sense with more customising options.

Mine is almost two months old and I flashed a rom for the first time last week.
Leedroid runs great but as said earlier it all depends on personal preferences, I also installed Launcher Pro cause i like it more compared to the stock dock etc.
Good luck!

Noob feeling totally lost...

Hi guys, just like to apologize for the noobness about to come, after looking around for 2 days im still no clearer at all...
So i have a new HTC Desire Z and i have the latest firmware that is officially released, no modding or anything yet has been done to the phone and im using sense 2.1...
Ok so im looking to modify my phone to get the latest sense 2.3 and to also be able to customize the phone a bit more then just changing themes other then just htc sense ones...
I dont understand at all if i need to root or the correct way to root on a desire z as ive read that some ways can brick the phone....
I also dont know if i need a new rom or where to get the from, again i heard that some are stable and some not and some can cause semi bricking. I also dont know if htc sense is part of the os or if it can be changed without altering anything else...
Im sure ill have more questions but thats in advance to all that can help.
Ps i also dont mind 1on1 msn help just send me a pm and ill give you my email address
Thank you

Hello and welcome to the boards. XDA is a great place to ask questions and learn techniques and procedures to get the most out of your device. You just have to think and ask the right questions, or risk being targeted (it happens sometimes =p).
First, I think we need some basic information:
Do you have the Desire Z or the T-Mobile G2 variant? Since you are asking about Sense, I want to assume you have the DZ, but just want to make sure.
What is the current baseband (build version)?
Do you have root yet?
Are you S-OFF yet?
As for ROMs, feel free to browse around the Dev Forums. Here are my recommendations, I've used all of them in the past or am currently using them right now.
Stable Sense (2.1) GB (2.3) ROM: Virtuous Sense from the Virtuous Team.
Stable Sense (3.0) GB (2.3) ROM: Virtuous Unity from the Virtuous Team.
Stable AOSP GB (2.3) ROM: Virtuous G-Lite from the Virtuous Team.
Stable MIUI GB (2.3.5) ROM: MIUI.us Official English from MIUI.us.
I have not used Cyanogen Nightlies because I'm not too keen on flashing almost every night. Those ROMs are for people who like to be on the bleeding edge IMO. The above recommendations are for stability and daily usage.
As a note, Sense ROMs take alot of resources to run and may be laggy at the start. That's the price to pay for Social Networking Integration and other convenience items (nicer widgets, etc...). AOSP variants will be quicker and use less memory, but they don't come with convenience options.

Im not rooted or s-off, my phone is on orange and is a desire Z.
My os is 2.3.3 and sense 2.1
Ive read somewhere in a sticky maybe to not flash virtuous... But im not sure if thats a pre-caution... I must admit im a sucker for the sense ui with its flashy looks and animations lol,
Ive heard of miui too... Another reason for wanting to do this is to remove default apps, i find it rather annoying to look thru about 5 map apps (and i dont really know which one is good or not...) And a bunch of other things when i only use facebook msn and occasionally skype. Other default apps ive probably never and wil never touch.
The sense 3.0 is the version i was thinking of btw not 2.3 (was thinking of gb) and yes stability and daily use is very much a priority as i am a noob and probably should start somewhere easy lol.
Thanks again for helping (searches for thx button in app xD)

CM7? Lol, contact linking is useful as i am lazy and i can use contact linking to get hold of most people i kno easily however skype seems to dislike linking as some of my contacts have linked to ALL of my skype contacts.
I guess im confused about where to start as there seems to be a lot of conflicting statements, sense seems to be a.... UI overlay ontop of the standard android os, is sense the only one of its kind or is there others that are different from the android UI?
Again thanks a lot and sorry if this seems so nooby, im just trying to gather info and links before i run into problems and ask more nooby questions.

Read, read, read. And after you've done that, read some more.
I spent months before finally making the decision to crack open this phone and load CM7, pouring over everything I could find regarding not only how to do it, but the "whys" of what I am doing. Understanding the inner workings of what you are doing will make the process much much simpler once you finally do it.
I'm still fairly new to the android game. I came from the iphone scene, where if you wanted to get the full power of the phone all you had to do was click once and be done with it. The android way may be more complicated at times, but is much more fun, and rewarding. Once you become familiar with it all, you will never want to turn back.
My suggestion, as a fellow newbie:
1) Read: Understand what you are up against
2) Plan: Decide what you want to do. Do you just want root? Flash Roms? What Roms do you want? etc.
3) Gather: Get together all the information you'll need. Phone info, tutorials, etc. Write it down if necessary, but make sure it is all handy in case it is needed or you have to run IRC/forums for help.
4) Attack: Pull the trigger and do it.
5) ???
6) Profit.

Well from my understanding, there are several different ways to accomplish the same thing when it comes to rooting and getting ready to flash. I followed the XDA wiki method and had no issues.
If you're confused about ROMs, there are usually a handful of stable, widely used ones. MIUI, Cyanogen, and Virtuous seems to be the most popular. I know you had mentioned wanting Sense 3.0, so Virtuous Unity might be the way to go for you.
Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions. If I don't have the answer I'm sure I can dig it up somewhere.

I think you mean the sticky thread warning not to use the Visionary tool to root, as it has been known to screw up the memory partitions and possibly lead to a soft brick. This has nothing to do with the Virtuous ROMs, which are excellent, and mostly what I run on my Desire Z.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025135
Stick with the method in the Wiki to root. Its not that hard, and its considered the safest way.
As said above, read, read, and read some more. And always ask questions, we love to help out. If you like sense, I hear the virtuous sense 3.0 rom is pretty sweet, though most roms over in development are great.

It could be worth it, but if you're feeling overwhelmed maybe not. I hang out in the Nook Color forums as well. Something things will carry over. As long as you can understand the similarities (what is a ROM, etc) and differences (rooting methods, etc). You'll be fine.

[Q] Which ROM would fit best?

Hi guys,
I just bought a secondhand DHD with Icecoldsandwich preinstalled. Although it didnt arrive yet, Ive been wondering which ROM to choose that would fit my needs best.
What Im actually looking for is a clean, fast and simple ROM, which would preferably support all the DHDs function like a stock ROM does - I really want a ROM that is for the every-day-use with few to no bugs at all.
Of course overclocking support and root would be very nice too
I thought about the CM7 but since there is so much to choose from I got lost a little bit, so I thought you could help me out.
Many thanks to you!
If You Want Fast And Clean without extras go with CM if you like sense choose sense other than that the thread will be closed cz there is no best rom
No one will be able to tell you what will work best for you and your device. The only way to find out is to take the tome out and read and test each one that catches your eye. A search would have told you this.

Best sense rom until Now!

Hi!
Which is the best rom with sense 3.0/3.5 for the Desire guys?
I have tried some of them but I am not sure which one to choose!
Thanks in advance!
I'm currently on Aurora v6 Sense 3.0. It's good, got 720p video recording that I really want. But it doesn't have Direct Volume Control, that greatly improves sound quality and it doesn't support Volume button control, which I also really miss, so I'm now looking at any kind of ROM that has all of these things.
Best sense is common sense (Read: Don't start rubbish threads like this)

Some of them don't have much written in description, especially features. Word of mouth can sometimes be a deciding factor in choosing ROM. Besides, switching ROMs, installing all apps you need and after days of using finding out it's not for you or is missing some features you need is very, very time consuming. I bought my Desire more than week ago and still can't decide on what ROM to stick with.

That shows how much u know, just about every rom states in the op what they have installed in the rom and what works/ does'nt etc..etc. you have ur desire for a week so it would be impossible for u to even comment on what the best rom is. Its called trial & error where im from, just read op of the rom and think hmmm that looks good, it has this it has that etc.etc.. and try it. If u dont like it then flash another. Anyway there is about a million threads about "whats the best rom" so again.... read!!
@searius... U didnt state in ur op that the phone was'nt urs.
