I am ready to dive in with the Unrevoked3 method to root my Desire, I take it I will then be able to load a custom ROM, however I'm a little overwhelmed by the choices. Is there a comprehensive list somewhere or can someone make any suggestions? I'm after stability and reliability although I am interested in what the whole ROM scene has to offer.
I presume that all my paid apps will still work as well?
i would stick to the rom you are using because if you have to ask that question, you haven't done enough research, if there was a single answer to what rom to use, then there wouldn't be so many around
so the final answer is, stick to the stock froyo that you've got already, there's nothing to be gained from other roms considering you didn't specify what it is you were looking for

I thought I said I'm after stability and reliability, and also app2sd+ in particular. Does that help?
Yes I am doing research, this question is part of the 'research' process. Thanks for your help.

Your way of research really puzzles me looking at the bold parts in your OP below.

- Yes, you should be able to flash a custom rom, if you can follow the instructions.
- There is no comprehensive list, the number of rom's and the changes are to large to keep it up to date, or do you offer to create one
- suggestions will tell you to use rom a, b, s, or z, depending on the users preferences. The only thing you can do is to read the rom description, and start skimming and following the rom's which description you liked.
A thing you left out, and what is normally mentioned in a question like this, do you prefer sense or non-sense?
To finish: I use LeeDroiD V2.1 and I am happy with it, it's stable / reliable, and it's Sense based.
Now just wait for the OD, DeFrost, Pays, Cyanogen (just some examples) and other rom users to give there opinion,
and then decide
^^ pretty much what he said!!
No one can tell you what to use, only give their opinions. Ultimately you'll have to read the threads and just try the ROMs until you find one you're happy with. I've gone back to stock as it does what I need it to
i just love when dudes get all condescending as if they were never overwhelmed when they first started out. first they yell at you and infer that you're an idiot and then 4 posts later, they wind up actually helping.
i guess it's like hazing for nerds.
seriously though, i'm gonna answer all your questions right here and now:
go with CM6. then download another one and try it. then download another one and try it. and then... come back here and tell us what your opinion is. you know, pay it forward and don't become one of those condescending dorks after you have figured it all out.
that is all. i'm going bowling with your father...

Well, when you don't get out much and you don't have many friends.. We should be more sympathetic to 'special needs' people.
Anyway, I'm on AuraxTsense now (check my sig for full details). I like the concept of undervolting for extended battery life, however before I dive in to ROMs, what can cause damage? I will avoid overclocking ROMs for that reason, anything else to watch out for?
What's the advantage of Cyanogen over others? I also read that Modaco ROMs are designed with stability in mind.
Is there any way to back up settings to restore when switching ROMs? Or should I just back each one up with all my settings and use that?
In the last week or so I've tried at least
- Cyanogen
- PirateRUM
- Some PAYS Sense one
- OpenDesire
- ShadowSense
+ another 1 or 2 I forget now
with Alex-V's one still to try.
The main thing I'd say is:
- Do you want Sense?
- Do you want GApps and other fluff preinstalled?
Try them and see...
Personally
- I like OD but it needs the Sense music player
- CM has no market, and I have not worked out how cutdown it's GApps package yet to remove fluff
I have been using cyanogenmod 6 for a few days now.
And im not going anywere anytime soon
However, like they say, try em all
Aurax is rocking my boat right now although struggling to work out how to install Maps..
What do you like about Cyanogen?
The ui is good. It just works. Try out for yourself. Painless to install. Ohh and the battery performance is alot better then the stock rom

Dude... reply to the newer threads. At least november 2012.
I know this has probably been asked to death, but the suggested results returned nothing...
Did a titanium backup, and a rom manager backup Via clockwork..... But now i cannot decide on which ROM to use!
It also doesnt help that when im reading specs... i have NO idea what 70% of it means, so its hard to base my own decision. So.....
Which ROM do you use? What are its best features? Is it a noticeable difference from Stock to Custom? Are they buggy? I have so many questions, but dont wanna be a bother... So maybe if you could just give me benefits of the one you use, that would be great.
Thank you
So long as you've got your backup, just go ahead and try some of the roms that are out there. If you don't like a particular rom, flash another.
Personally I like the Sense based roms, I have tried others but I keep going back to Sense. I'm currently using InsertCoin which based on a Desire HD rom, small fonts compared to the Desire, but other features including Skins (themes), HTCSense.com phone finder (which doesn't always work).
Are you wanting to try a non Sense based rom? There are plenty out there to play with, MIUI, Cyanogen, Gingerbread roms too.
In this forum, there is a thread which compares all the available ROM's (I'll post the link once I find it)
As @UKseagull mentioned, try different ROM's , You might find a suitable one for you !
Jeeezus ****ing christ. There needs to be a sticky to say that a rom is a rom that YOU, the user must decide on. It is not about what we think, it is about what you think. Your own PERSONAL PREFERENCE!
This is prob the 10th thread this week about that same topic.

Why are you so angry if someone asks a perfectly in place question?!
There are really many roms for the Desire, and I am _sure_ most of them are not stable.
So, if a newbee asks which rom should he try, an experienced flasher could point to the most stable rom. One with Sense, one without. This is very valuable information.
Why should EVERYBODY flash 10 roms before he/she finds a stable one?!
When I was flashing roms on my previous winmo phone, I was ALWAYS responding to such questions to my best knowledge.
And, yes, there are many same threads, because MANY people want to know about this and cannot find ANY info.
So, in short, either answer the man or shut up!

I'm using InsertCoin at the moment which is a ported HD ROM and seems really good. If you want to stick with non HD then LeeDroid is great.

He's angry because it's like the 10th time people ask the same (stupid) question over and over again. In the development part you can find plenty of topics about roms. Some of them are stable, some of the are not, you can read it all in their specific thread. Read, read, read, that's all you have to do here. I'm a noob too and I've been reading like 4 weeks here before I decided to flash a certain rom (leedroid), and it works great.
It's a shame that XDA doesn't have a poll similar to the ZTE - which rom poll over at Modaco, a quick look and you can see which are the most popular roms in use at that point in time. http://android.modaco.com/content/z...omisation/329997/poll-what-rom-are-you-using/
The OP asked a question because they probably value advice from the more experienced rom flashers here , those that are willing to give advice will do so. Yes, rom choice is an individual preference but there's really no need for people to reply with derogatory comments, just ignore the thread and leave it to the others that are willing to help.

Read? Did you not READ where i said that the specs mean NOTHING cause i dont exactly understand what im "Getting" in a rom? Im pretty computer literate, and have only had my desire (or android in general), for maybe 3 weeks. This is all new to me. Ive sim unlocked and rooted thus far without confusion or asking for help.
Its just the specs. Theres so much **** in them that i dont understand that its hard to pick one. Intimidating sorta.
Thanks to all that helped. I think im going to try leedroid. Its sense based, which i like over vanilla from what ive seen.
I come from LeeDroid which is an awesome Sense ROM. Currently though I use Redux which is senseless. What can I say, I like it minimalistic. I also prefer to decide myself what apps should be installed on -my- phone.
I wish Lee came out with a clean AOSP build... Or I figured out how to use his kernel and build my own.
Anyway good luck.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I've been using LeeDroid for several months now with no issues at all. If you check his minisite out, he lists all the apps you can safely remove from the zip prior to flashing without damaging it. That way you are only installing the bare minimum required to run a Sense ROM and you then just add the bits you want.
Personally I only run a Sense ROM because I like the HTC dialer, clock and phonebook over the vanilla Android ones. I use launcher pro which just seems to be snappier than Sense with more customising options.

Hi All…
Really hope someone can advise me.
I’ve rooted and S-Off my friend’s HTC Desire. Now I need help choosing a ROM that is Fast, Smooth, Stable and has good battery life for everyday use. Also after I give the phone back, it won’t be updated anytime soon (I’m thinking 6months to a year) so no beta.
Thanks
Personally I'd say go for an aosp rom. GB Sense rom's are great but most have some sort of issue with lags fc's etc and are constantly being updated.
Couple of the best would be...
GingerVillain. Richard trip just updated to version 3.1 which seems to be running well for most people.
Redux2. This is labeled as "test" status, but honestly, I was running this for a month and found no issues with it at all. Was the fastest and smoothest rom (when teamed with Go Launcher Ex) that I've had on my phone. (Still got my nandroid and tempted to go back).
Search the dev section and read a couple of the threads. But honestly I'd say stick with an aosp rom. There's some great one's about.
Use the search. Asking for the best rom is a completely senseless question.

It's not a senseless question at all! What he's asking for is an OPINION.
If someone asked you what's the best car in the world, or what's the best football team, would you say "don't be stupid, that's a senseless question"? No, because you would have an OPINION about it and be able to give an answer according to what you thought.
Or are you saying you have no opinion, or free thought of your own?
Choosing a rom depends so much on personal preferences that it's senseless (=not helpful) to tell the OP what's the best rom my opinion is. If you read any thread with this topic you would understand it's senseless to ask this question.
Think about it: E.g. I tell you Mercedes builds the best cars in the world. You test it, don't like it, test BMW and like it. Result: My opinion did not help you at all.
And to form an opinion he just have to use the search.
Conclusion: His question was not stupid, but senseless.

I have read threads on this topic, and yes in a lot of cases it is stupid because they just ask "what is the best rom". However in this case if you read the op you'll see that what he is asking for is an opinion from people who have flashed Desire rom's for a "fast, smooth, stable" rom with "good battery life". Like I said before, he is asking for an opinion.
"Hey MatDrOiD, that movie you went to see the other night, was it any good because I'm thinking of going to see it?"
"Sorry, I can't answer that because it would require me giving you my opinion. And any opinion about the movie is dependant so much on personal preferences that it would be senseless and not helpful of me to tell you anything about it, even though I saw it and might/might not have enjoyed it. Therefore I cannot tell you whether I think it was good or not, and I refuse to speak about it any more."
Edit:
"MatDrOiD, that girl over there is pretty hot yes?"
"Why are you asking such a nonsensical question? My opinion has no bearing to you on whether she looks nice or not. I could say yes, but someone else could say no. So in that sense I will just stay quiet and not give any opinion about it one way or the other."
Edit2:
"So Mr Hawking, what is your opinion about subatomic matter anti-matter particle deceleration in a flux void?"
"What a senseless question. Spend the next thirty years researching the subject and then make up your own opinion. Even though I am the most knowledgeable man on the planet on this subject, I refuse to give you my opinion."

+1 on this. Aosp rom would be my choice as well.
Ignore me, I'm a n00b posting via xda app.
@zedmarcus:
Your examples have nothing to do with the OP's question. In all your three of your examples the questioner asks for an opinion about a specific topic (movie, girl, subatomic matter).
In this topic the OP asks in general. If he asked something like "what do you guys think of oxygen or AOSP roms in general, then your example would be appropriate.
Furthermore, the thread title says "best rom".
Nevertheless, we should end this: Because of personal preferences I recommend lightweight AOSP roms like dGB, Oxygen or Redux.
SwiftKeyed from dGB using Transparent XDA App
Girls, girls, quit bickering. There is no place on XDA for thin skins.
IMHO, Oxygen and Redux are two of the fastest and stablest ROMs if you dislike the HTC bells and whistles. I used to be a Leedroid and StarBurst mainstay, but since switching over to Oxygen, I haven't had one single incidence of bootloop, even after powering on after my battery fell out after I accidentally dropped my Desire onto a marble floor.
@MatDrOiD
I don't think you really understand what you're saying...
If you had even bothered reading the first post instead of just the title you would have seen that he is asking for a specific type of rom, "I need help choosing a ROM that is Fast, Smooth, Stable and has good battery life for everyday use."
And the specific topic in question here is a Desire ROM. Your arguement is SENSELESS.
But anyway...
+1 for an aosp rom

@MatDrOiD
All I’m after is a Fast, Smooth and Stable ROM with good battery life.
Now I have two options,
1. I can download and try all ROMs available for HTC Desire for one week each (which will take months).
2. I can ask people what they would recommend, and based on recommendations I can decide on one ROM (or if it’s two or three, I can easily try them and that would only take few weeks).
In the interest of saving time, I have chosen option 2 and I still think I have done the right thing.
Remember this is a form for people around the world to help each other, share ideas and experience.
No problem. Hope you find one that suits your needs
Consider trying AOSP mate, most if not all of those criteria you're looking are present. Currently using Gingervillain 3.1, for me its fast.
But speaking of battery life, i want to know the opinion of others....im a moderate user, brightness to low, only used wifi as of the moment for surfing the net, turns it on only if needed but one time i fell asleep leaving wifi on for more or less 7hours.after 2days i still have 20%..is the batt good to your opinion????

imho best is:

2-without bugs
3-fast

The reason you are getting all these insults is because you say that you are not new to xda yet you act like you are. It's not that you posted on the wrong section, it's because you asked a very common question that could have been answered by you doing a search query.
Or you could just say in one sentence which you think is the best sense rom. Jeezzz i dont understand why you take the effort to complain but cant answer a simple question.
In my opinion, cooldroid v3 is the best sense rom for the htc desire. Its a sens 2.1 based rom, which makes it very fast

development is still pretty active, despite the desire being the best part of 2 years old, so many of the roms there fulfill all your requirements, therefore in your honest opinion, nearly all are the best
even if you get many more replies from other users about what ROM they are using, it's only from users who can be bothered to post here, whereas most post in the rom threads themselves. experiences are often conflicting. one user's experience (AMAZING) with a rom can be completely different (LAGGGGGYYYY BUGGGYYYY) from another, which will only confuse you further. why? many combinations of apps/sync/launcher/kernel/hardware. most importantly, we all use the phone differently...
and in the time that it takes for people to post here and argue over which is AWESOME ROCK SOLID STABLE, NO BUGS, SOOO FAST and DEFINITELY THE BEST ROM EVER!!!!!11 you could have formed your own opinion by reading a snapshot of the threads, even install a couple and try them out, which is definitely the 'best' way of discovery.
which hopefully gives some further insight as to why best rom threads are pretty pointless...
there is no best ROM, only the best ROM for your needs (or your friend's needs in this case)
good luck, i hope you find will the best one, i'm still looking
Thanks. Soon I'll flash one off them and tell you which....

yeah cause I had tons of overheating, and resets with the other roms, especially when on 3G, or GPS... which was annoying... as for this one, I'm absolutely satisfied with
no overheating
good CPU clock
nice apps
lots of room on internal storage

For me it's Sandvold's ICS for Desire.
It has great support and works like a charm for the most part.
It has one or two major and some minor issues but that is to be expected it is still a beta mind you.
Overall its the best rom for my tastes. Its still under development and updates are released as much as twice a week. The development team and specifically Sandvold is always on the case solving issues and helping where he can.

ViperX is the best Sense ROM.
SlimBean is the best AOSP ROM.
You may try out both.

Hey thanks for answering!
I dont really know what i want right now But i will try both I also found the "rooting tool" so i guess i will be using that one
Also i just read in some forum that i should update something before i root it? Do you know anything about it, because i lost the site Thanks again mate!
There is no "best" rom. Viper X is not the best rom, its the most customizable rom.....yes.
The best rom is the rom that fits you and your needs the most.
Athulele, it's inappropriate to take two ROMs you like and call them the best of all. It's false information.
@OP
It is purely based on opinion and you should definitely develop your own taste of software and not simply flash stuff that people tell you to.
@Hofs I'm just sayin', that AOKP is equally (if not even more) customizable to ViperX
Sorry for groaning

ROM Comparison threads are unfortunately not allowed on XDA. A lot of people have different ideas of what is best and unfortunately sharing their ideas and opinions frequently leads to trolling, flaming and more.
My personal recommendation would be to visit some of the ROM threads in the Development section. Read the OP. Preview the screenshots. Skim through some of the user comments and complaints. Find one you're interested in and give it a shot. If you like it keep it, if you don't move on and try another.
With that being said this thread is now closed.
