[Q] [SOLVED] Screen burn on Lock Screen? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Has anyone seen any signs of "screen burn in" on their lockscreen? I woke up this am and had a brownish pattern on the LS, but NOT on the home screens (same wallpaper). In fact, no matter what I display on the home screens, I cannot see the burn, but even if I change wallpaper on the LS, I still see it there. Any ideas?
Seems strange that it's only on the LS, but it's definitely there, and it was not there yesterday.
(I tried posting this in IRC, but it seems dead there and I'd like to get some feedback before I head out today).

Yeah, I was considering that. I'm pretty sure I would have noticed it yesterday, though, so I'm not sure it was there.
I'm also curious as to why it only shows on the LS. I may post some pics later if I get a chance.

Same experience here, just turn off "ripple" in lock screen settings!

I was going to say that too. I remember a similar complaint when the GS III was new.

Well I'll be handcuffed to a pisspot.
Turning off the Ripple Effect worked. Many thanks. Apparently there are enough similarities between the GNII and the GSIII that I should consider searching for solutions there as well.
Thanks for the responses.

Screen/display problem. banding, interlacing

Hello.
As of last night, when i turned on my Excalibur, it has had a strange display issue. it looks as if the upper 4/5ths of the screen is displaying only half of an interlace, and the rest is white. the bottom 1/5th is perfectly normal. All phone functions appear to be perfectly normal. I am running 3VO.2.50.080809 ROM.
Can anybody give me an idea of what may be wrong with it, and how i might go about fixing it. In one week i will also have access to a broken Excalibur with a working screen, so if it does turn out that the screen needs to be replaced, that is an option. I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the support in advance

You have the same problem that i have. It is not a white screen problem!, it is a permanent white scanlines problem... nobody could give me an answer yet.

Have you tried the link in my post?
sorry for the delayed response. yes i did, but there are no programs running at all in celeTask. also. it is not the whole screen that is white. there are interlaced bands of white for the upper 4/5ths of the screen, and the bottom 1/5th is displaying normally. any other ideas? im wondering if reflashing might help.
This happens to my phone.. is it the same that happens to you?

[Q] How do I set the screen to stay on?

On most Android phones in the Development section you can set the screen to stay on when charging, but that's missing on this one. Any idea where it went, or how I can approximate the same function?
Trying to figure this one out too. "Screen On" in the market allows you to set this as an option, however I seemed to get the loss of signal problem much more frequently when I use this app. I haven't tested extensively so I could be wrong, but I hope this gets added through a custom ROM soon. Listening to Spotify at work is annoying when I have to wake up my phone and unlock each time I want to change tracks.

I installed ScreenTimeoutSwitch and I'm pretty happy with it. The most it will do is 240 minutes of on-time, but that's not bad.

Galaxy S 1 had it, since I'm coming from an Epic and used to having the feature. Hadn't heard about there being an issue before. That's a problem on car rides, when the point is not to have to reach over and turn on the screen. Also, as far as I'm aware their desk docks and car docks override this and keep it on, so that doesn't jive...
I have been using tasker to set this. Just made a profile that set the screen timeout to the highest when plugged in and then back to 30sec when not plugged in.

Do not set your screen to stay on unless you want to be annoyed by ghosting in about a month. I suggest you use the 15second screen timer and avoid displaying static images.
My OG Epic had some visible burn-in due to my music player staying dimly lit while driving. I could see the player controls in yellow on any white screen displayed.

Odd, my OG Epic has no such problem. And a 15-second screen timer makes the phone next to useless. I find anything under a minute incredibly frustrating to use.
Sorry, these descriptions sound like an unusable device. 15 second timeout, and avoid displaying static images? Sounds excessively fragile. Also doesn't jive with anything I've heard about the device or my own experience with the previous one. I feel like people are being overly-cautious here. As well, if this is true, where's the public outcry? Those limitations are unreasonable and should have prevented this from being a popular technology.

well, alot of the galaxy phones had it disabled. For example, I had the Samsung Galaxy S 4G from Tmobile and it did not have this option with the most recent software update.
Screen burn in is an issue on any amoled display. its not that bad, but if you do get it, it shows up on gray and blue images.
Thats the reason its been disabled on alot of them to prevent burn-in.
Now, if you choose to use a hack or app to keep it on just keep in mind that static images on full brightness after about a few minutes will cause ghosting from screen burn in

Interesting. Well, I will keep that in mind. I've been doing it for a while now with this one with no problem, and obviously when I'm driving the navigation stays on the whole time. Still, it hasn't been very long. I figure if I have issues by the time we're closing in on a year I can always get a warranty replacement to hold me for the next eight months.
I mainly want screen on while I'm driving to reduce distractions/interactions when changing music tracks. I have the car home app and if I use car home when plugged in, the screen will never turn off.

That's exactly how I got the burn in, using pandora and other music apps while driving allowed the controls to burn into the screen.
Now I have a bluetooth enabled car stereo and I can control pandora and my music player through it so the screen can just stay off.
The burn in issue is due to the fact that the blue led will start dimming before the other two. When that happens, the areas where the blues start dying get discolored since the blue subpixels aren't at 100%. I'm not sure if this was resolved with SAMOLED+, but it's probably still an issue. Again, as long as you don't leave a static image that drives the blue high, it won't be an issue.
Does burn in occur when the screen brightness is %100? Or will it also happen when the brightness its turned all the way down?

Strange dimming bug...

I've been having a a bit of a strange bug with my GN...
When i unlock and open for instance messaging app to look at SMS's...i see the screen dim a lot and come back again. If i open up settings screen dims like an LCD panel with no backlight. If i click back, screen comes back again or if i lock and unlock screen, all is OK.
I've done some fiddling about and it only seems to happen on apps with white backgrounds i.e. messaging, gtalk, gmail etc. If i open dark background apps i.e. phone app, settings or gallery it doesnt happen.
But for all those other apps when i launch them, screen appears to flicker (dim) and come back again...messaging is the only one where it dims completely in settings.
Has anybody else noticed this?
And more wierdness...in the messaging settings menu, if i scroll to the bottom the brightness goes completely and then comes back again, and starts flickering a lot...
maybe i'll try turning off auto brightness and see if it still does it...
I've had a couple of customers come in already saying they always felt like the brightness was on notch to low sometimes or just very dim. Considered it user error, just got my nexus in the mail and after set up brightness just dropped randomly to almost nothing...
soooo guess we'll see
ah well still did it with auto brightness off
wonder if i've got a borked phone or if others do it and they just dont notice...
EDIT: if anybody's interested in seeing it i've just uploaded a vid here
And i know i still have the front screen cover on...havent wanted to take it off yet!
Restored stone to factory settings this morning and i've not installed anything else or changed any settings (other than turning off NFC, wifi and mobile data)...and it still does it.
Think i might have a defective handset then...annoying though, it's only 2 weeks old but the place i got it from states
Phones that are faulty out-of-box as determined by our warehouse can also be returned for an extended period of up to 7 days from date of delivery.

So if i can't get a replacement out of them, what are the odds of samsung replacing it for a new handset?
Hmm pretty sure it's hardware, set desktop picture to something quite bright/white and sure enough when i was scrolling through the 5 homescreens brightness was flickering from one to the next...
What are the odds of getting a replacement handset after 2 weeks? :|
I had this same issue when I got my phone. I had a yakjuwx build in my phone.
Ever since I flashed over to yakju I haven't experienced it.
You may want to check and see what you have.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Mine is already running yakju from new :/ I might try re-flashing it tonight though just for the hell of it.
Is this not a bit weird that it happens only on bright/wight screens/backgrounds/apps? And that it's suddenly fine when you lock the screen...
If it was a laptop i'd be fitting a new panel to it but then i dont know what amoled's are like (especially combined with a light sensor)
Nope, still does it after a re-flash :/
Got a replacement handset now...
Like my first one, it was one of the early opened and re-sealed with samsung label handsets (and they hadnt put the battery door on properly, fingerprint on the SIM card slot!)
But anyways, waiting for the OTA update on this one
It's obviously running ITL41D and no OTA has come through yet whereas on my first handset it came through pretty much straight away.
Would the fact i've already had the OTA on one handset stop this coming through? :|

[Q] TV noise effect occasionally after unlock.

Good day.
Like the title says, occasionally I get a TV noise effect, the time I unlock my phone. Not life breaking, but does bug me, to be honest. At first, I thought it was related to the "Screen On/Off" animation, but enabling/disabling it didn't help anyhow. Any advice how to get rid of it?
Didn't find any info on the web regarding this, so came here to ask.
My specifications:
CM 7.1.0.1
HCDR.Kernel v4.2
HBoot - 6.01.1002
Radio - 3.35.19.25
S-OFF
Hmm... Is this with the phone set to silent/vibrate or ring?

With the default profile, when sound is on. The TV effect lasts less than a second, just before the lockscreen appears and it seems to occur, when the phone has been lying around for a while, like the first unlock in several minutes/hours.
Also, I have a "Launcher Pro Plus" and "LunarUI Black" theme installed, if that helps.

Does it still make the sound if you put it on silent? I don't think the launcher/theme have anything to do with this, but try another launcher/theme and see if that fixes it.

I think you misunderstood me. It's not related to the sound. I get a screen noise, like you know, on those old TVs, when the TV lost the signal.

Yeah, I know, it's the default sound for the Screen On/Off animation. Which means it is related to the sound. However, why you still get it when you have the animation turned off is a mystery. Did you follow any of the advice I gave you?
After playing around with the launcher/theme, nothing happened. So, a few days ago I replaced the kernel again, from "HCDR.Kernel v4.2" back to "InfinityPLAY v10". And the screen noise is gone!

[Q] Keyboard Shadow/Outline on Homescreen

Hello. Just picked up a used GNex off Craigslist. My old Nexus broke and after 2 weeks wn old Dith aroid 2 Global that someone let me use, I had to get a GNex back. It came rooted with CM 10.1. However, once I got home and started messing around with it (flashed AOKP and installed TWRP) I noticed that there was a shadow/outline (not really sure how to describe it) of the keyboard on the screen at all times. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it is pretty annoying (especially on pages with white backgrounds.) I'm pretty sure I did nothing to cause this but does anyone have any idea what is going on/how to fix this?
Sidenote: I just realized that the keyboard outline is not "on the picture" if you will. I took a screenshot, looked at it on my computer and the keyboard outline was not on the picture. Not sure what this means/if it helps.
I've tried to take a picture of my phone but they keyboard outline is too faint to pick up.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Your new galaxy nexus is suffering from severe burn in. Remember on amoled screens, stuff displaying on the screen sort of burns the picture into the screen. Download screen diagnostic from the play store. Take a snapshot of the screen with the keyboard open. Then load the snap shot in screen diagnostic. Leave it there for a bit and it should fix the burn in.

for how long did you leave the negative image on? i have a similar problem on my s4 and i made a screenshot of my whatsapp chat box with the keyboard on (like the burnt image), turned it into a negative using the app and left it there for about 15 mins and the burn is still there like before.
I think I left mine on overnight. I didn't remove it completely, but it improved it
