What's the best place to buy this phone off contract? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I went to a corporate Sprint store to buy the gn2. They would only sell the device with an activation fee. Is there anywhere else I can buy the device new without having to pay an activation fee?

If you are paying full price, with no contract renewal, then buy it at a third party or retailer store, the act. Fee isn't required on those type of transactions. If you are buying at a Corporate location they may not be able to bypass the Act. fee.

Act. fee is what fee exactly? I bought it full price at a corporate store without contract and I paid $649.99 + tax and it came out to around $690.

I bought mine off Craigslist for $600 and activated it online at Sprint.com under my account. No activation fees here.
The guy has more. PM me if interested.

An Act. fee is an activation fee of $36.00 plus tax that you get billed on your account for upgrading or adding a new line onto your acount. This will get billed, so you don't pay for this in store. There is NO act fee when buying the phone w/o a contract so don't worry about that being carged because you are not extending any contract.
On a side note if you are extending your contract (upgrading or setting up a new line) if you are a member of a credit union bank, you can get the Sprint rep to add this discount to your account and it will waive all act fee's for any line on your account as well as give you a 10% discount off your bill every month. It takes about a month or two to apply to your account so if you do not have the discount already then the act fee will most likely be credited back to your account on the second bill you get after you upgrade.

got mine for $425 on craigslist, try your luck there

i got mine off of ebay.

I got mine off ebay as well for $650. Not too bad. I tried Craigs list in my area and no one had it for sale.

Advise on cancel contract and buy new phone

I just signed a new 2yr contract with Sprint to get the epic 4g touch, since i still got 1yr left on my original contract (evo4g), they can only give me $75 discount off of 499.00, so I paid $425.00.
Now I am thinking I should of cancel the original contract and pay etf (pay$100), then get the phone with new contract for $200, which the total is $300.00, would that be The best way to do this? Can I still transfer my old number if I cancel the contract? Is this do able now that I just signed the new 2yr contract?
If i were you I would just buy it for retail price. The $75 discount is not worth signing a 2 year contract imo.
Thats my other option. Just pay $499 and stay with old contract, and have option to get new phone with discounted price next year...who knows, maybe Galaxy S III
Yeah, just do that. You get to keep your upgrade eligibility. Just return the phone since you are still within the 14 day return window. They are going on ebay for around $460 right now. Probably cheaper than sprint because of the taxes that they charge.

That's for new contracts only I believe. For some reason my ETF for my Epic Touch shows up as $200 on my account.
Here's an update:
I called the Sprint store I purchased this from, they said I will need to return the phone, which I have to pay $35 restocking fee, then call Sprint Customer Care to reverse the contract back, then buy the phone FULL price again to go back to the original contract.
I cannot keep my existing phone (return and re-buy back), since it will take 48 hours to reverse the contract. It will be a new phone.
I don't think I will go through this process, this is just PITA. oh well...that's what I get for not thinking it through first..

I call bs on that. All you have to do is return customer care and they will reverse the contract without you having to purchase the phone full price. I don't think you can get out of the $35 restocking fee though.

Did your T-mo store say "$50 restocking fee"

Amazon is selling the GSII for $199 which is $124 including taxes etc.
Don't we have 14 days by law?
I can verify that. They did say $50 restock fee. And yes law mandates 14 day buyers remorse time frame.
Its not illegal. They take it back and charge a "fee".
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Can anyone cite exactly which law allows consumers 14 day "buyers remorse?"
FYI, my local T-Mobile store also said $50 restocking fee on both the HTC Amaze "Ruby" 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S2.
mine said 50 dollars also
I used to work for an independent sprint store & we had a restocking fee too. We did it because we had people every month who would buy phones, use them for exactly 30 days & then "change their mind". We couldn't resell them & we had to eat a ton of cost every time. Those fees serve as a deterrent to that kind of behavior. No, it's not fair, but don't blame the carriers, blame the scammers.
Each device should come with a tag on the box that has the 50 dollar restocking fee notice. I work for T-mo and we have it on each and every box.

You're on Sprint? Ew. Yeah, I'll confirm I've seen the $50 stickers on the boxes. It's not a law. It's a policy. Company makes the policies.
They recently went up from practically nothing to $50 to prevent people from buying and returning phones. It sucks but thank the people that did it often enough for T-Mobile to notice significant losses.
I think it was becuse of LG G2X.

This might work for you, it worked for me when the sales person advised me of the $50.00 restocking fee" (Are they nuts?!) ...Get a manager & explain, just negotiate it beforehand, (oftentimes your negotiating powers are better when you are BUYING a phone, rather than when you're RETURNING it : )
Tell the manager T-Mobile service was spotty the last time you had it and you're wanting to see if its improved. Mgr i spoke to said he would waive the $50.00 upon return,if the coverage was not improved since my last go round. (i got him to write it on receipt and sign it ; ) (He had no choice, i told him his only other option was, "i kidnap him & his phone and drive around town with them to see how coverage was"...lol

when i bought my S2 full price with 30$ prepaid plan, the sales lady never mention about return policy or 50$ restocking fee but she did say "you want me to remove that screen cover for you?", i said no, that' fine. is she nuts!?
Yes, at the T-Mo store where I bought my out of contract, I asked about the return policy. Since I'm in California, I get 30 days, but have to pay a $50 restocking fee if I return it.
I think if you buy the phone w/ contract, the re-stocking fee is waived.
Bought at full price. There was a big sticker on the box that says $50 restocking fee. I'm in CA.
Yup all smartphones have a 50$ re-stocking fee. There are also re-stocking fees on mobile broadband products and feature phones.
People run businesses not charities. The $50 fee is not bad
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Does the restocking fee apply to phones that have not been opened or used?
I could not figure out whether you are returning the phone or not.
With the restock fee, it is not worth returning it to save money by going through Amazon. Besides, Amazon says that the $199 is for a new 2 yeaar contract and that it is on backorder.
So sit back and enjoy your phone while we watch the developers crack this nut.

[Q] Help Deciding

So here's the deal. I am an AT&T subscriber the launch of the Atrix in late February and I really want to get the Nexus. Up until now I was going to sell the Atrix which I figure I could get about $200 on eBay with the accessories I have, and switch to VZW and take them up on their double data promo but am getting annoyed with their delays and supposed bloat they are adding to the phone.
I currently pay around $56 a month with AT&T for the base minutes and 2GB of data (Use Google Voice for text, 21% employer discount). It would cost me a minimum of $10 more a month plus a termination Fee of $245 with AT&T. I also have a $100 rewards certificate I could use at Best Buy towards the phone.
All said and done I could get the phone through VZW for about $145 or $245 depending on if the phone is $199.99 or $299.99 on contract and factoring in the the termination fee, the sale of the Atrix and the BB certificate I have and I would pay $10 more a month. Or I could buy it Unlocked, for around 500 after the sale of the Atrix, and save $10 a month.
I am really torn and any help making my decision would be greatly appreciated.

Migrating to T-Mobile Value Plan

I am hoping that some fellow XDA'ers will be able to help me out here. I am currently on a Classic plan and just got 2 Galaxy S3's with 1 free Galaxy S2 from Costco at the discounted rate. I want to switch to the Value plan pricing, (this was the plan even before buying the new phones). I know there is a $200 / line migration fee since we have recently used the subsidy pricing on all 3 lines. It was my understanding that I would have to pay $600.00 to migrate over. However, when I look into it online, the change says I will have to pay $400.00. Is there a cap or was there a mishap on T-mobiles part not charging me the extra $200?
I don't want to change it online only to have them come back and say I owe them $600 when the checkout shows only $400. Has anyone got any experience with this? Should I pull the trigger on line or contact CS to talk to them and almost assuredly get charged the $600?
Call CS. In my opinion it is better to call in and pay the $600 rather than have them find out they ****ed up later and end up charging $200 more. Try to talk to retention, they are easier to talk to and much friendlier. I don't think they will charge you the extra $200 if it isn't warranted. Just be sure to mention that online it says $400 and maybe even say another rep you talked to said $400 and you just wanted to be 100% sure so you called back.

I work for tmobile. Because you got your phones at costco u signed 2 contracts. One with tmobile and one with costco. Costco will charge u a mugration fee also because u got the phones at their price and their subsidy has its own terms and conditions. Same for any authorized dealer. I work for corporate tmobile. I know that costco has better deals than we do but they also have a lot more fine print.

EDIT: I just called Costco to ensure I wasn't under a contract with them and with T-Mobile. The Wireless Advocates associate I talked with was very informative about it and assured me there was no 2nd contract entered into with Costco when purchasing from them. He said that 90% of all 3rd party cell providers will require a separate contract when purchasing from them because when you cancel, or migrate to a value plan, the commission to the location you signed up at is cut and they want to recoup the cost. He said Costco is such a big company that it has been able to negotiate better pricing and can absorb the lower commission on the occasions a cancellation and/or migration occurs. Next, I gotta get on the phone and talk to retentions. Will update afterwards for anyone interested.
TLDR: Costco does not enter you into a 2nd contract with them when purchasing phones, while most other 3rd party retailers will.
For anyone interested, I just got off the phone with CS. I am of the belief that I simply got lucky on this one. Upon initially talking to the CS rep she told me there would be a $600.00 Migration fee or ETF depending on which direction I went. (Told her I was thinking about just canceling to join my companies discounted plan with AT&T). I told her I was under the impression the migration fee would be $400 and the ETF would be $600 so I would rather just migrate than cancel.
She told me again that it would be $600 either way so I asked her why it was only showing a $400 migration fee online, at this point she said she would start the process of migration just to see what the system told her. She was surprised to see it showing only $400 on her end as well. I was informed that one of my lines wasn't being charged the migration fee for some reason. I politely asked her if we could do it at that price and she responded by saying "I'm not going to correct it, that's what the computer says, so I won't look a gift horse in the mouth." Went typically smooth at this point, standard contract extension, yada yada. I thanked her for doing it for me and she was very happy to have done it.
Needless to say, I think a glitch in the system just saved me $200 bucks plus $50.00 a month. :victory::highfive:
Glad to hear a good ending to this event ... I love value plan, switched recently, saved $150 monthly. Best phone plan, cheap, speedy data & decent coverage. I too got phone from costco, and I got charged only $200 migration fees, no additional "costco" fees. Although I do have to pay tax to the migration fees....I heard that other stores such as walmart, best buy, target, wirefly...etc have additional fees ON TOP of t-mobile migration fees....so I guess it's vendor dependent, best to ask about break up fees before signing any contract, ahem...like prenuptial agreement ... ha ha....

Nice to hear that everything went well on your part.
I was debating with myself about the Classic versus Value plan as well.
End up having to pay a larger sum to purchase a new phone at one time, but you save money in the long run.
Value plan ftw. I buy phones for around 300 anyways.

I wasn't able to find an eBay/BB ETF either so maybe there isn't one? I know with some companies like Amazon or Wirefly they have their own ETF. Since I still have 3 months left of credit on my prepaid plan I guess I'll be waiting til there's no rebate to try this..

you would just pay the 200 dollar migration fee from classic to value, as far as I can tell, costco nor bestbuy charge any etf other than the carriers etf. you still need to pay activation but you pay that pretty much everywhere except costco. as for the one month on the classic plan, thats a possibility, but still thats a 20 dollar difference for one month so still a decent deal.
Dang my main line with data isn't due for an upgrade until the 10th, two days after this promotion ends. I wonder if I could use one of my non-data lines to get this without adding Data to that line.

Same exact experience for me. I returned my Note 2 on Sunday after seeing this offer. I just got the email telling me it shipped. This is MUCH better than going the Value Plan route. With the value Plan you pay the $200 down and you pay $20 for the next 2 years. You will never see the savings in the value Plan because you will be paying for the phone each month, which will bring the bill to the same (or more) as a classic. I went over this option with THREE T-Mobile reps (the knowledgeable ones, not the ones from the Philippines) and they ALL said the same thing tome: It doesn't pay to switch to a Value Plan when the costs of the phone payments will put me at or above my current Classic Plan amount. #WINNING

the reps are brain dead, you will pay less because 4 months of the contract you are not paying the extra amount, and with this price, you will pay much less by converting to value plan, taking the 200 dollar hit and being done with it.

I logged in to my T-Mobile account and it doesn't look like any of my plans changed which is what I wanted. Thank you so much for the heads up on this deal!

#WINNING

I implore you to be patient. The phone is worth the wait. I'm loving it so far and I've barely tapped into it's potential!
