Battery drain about 5% per hour - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I recently bought Note II. Previously was using S 2 and was experiencing terrible battery life
My Note II drops a battery of about 5% per hour even when I m not using it. Most recent stats show awake time of 45 min when the screen was on for 10 min. Deep sleep of 1 hr 25 min. I have whatsapp and viber installed. Most of the awake time is by *overload* 1013.
With the large battery of 3100mAh, is 5% drop per hour normal? I feel something is eating up my battery. Any help?

For shore something is eating up your battery.Try cpu spy and see if your note2 goes to deep sleep when your not using it.

This is not normal. Do you leave a lot of apps open? Some rogue apps do drain battery. Are you on stock rom?
Also use OS Monitor. Let it settle for a few seconds after you open it, and see if some process is always requiring the cpu usage when it should not be doing anything.

Not normal. Some app is probably eating up your battery.

It's clearly showing that overflow thing is running for more than 2 hours. Just find out what it is, problem solved!

installed OS monitor
"android system" and "system" are at the top of the list
I have not rooted my phone
as for the apps
I installed Sygic but that was constantly using CPU in the background so I uninstalled that
the only other apps I cud think of that r running in the background are whatsapp and viber

If you want to make sure you didn't get a lemon and that it's an app, you could try doing a factory reset on the phone. Then without any apps installed, see if it still drains 5%/hr.

Its that stupid battery sucking viber app which is sucking your battery. Try uninstalling it and reboot your phone and see if it still drains quick.
Edit: this is based on experience. Also if you could leave a feedback for viber on google play, maybe they will try to fix it. I have left 1 star for it.

If you have downloaded the latest Maps update just remove it.

I have forced stop maps and that has improved the battery drain somewhat
edit: its still *overflow*1013 thats eating up my battery
what in the world is this overflow

Believe it or no i removed Subway Surfer and now my phone is going to sleep
theres no overflow anymore
its hard to believe these stupid games can drain ur battery unknowingly
anyone else with similar experience with Subway Surfer
Based on my experience, my advice to you, dont install this BS game

Battery drain is ridiculous...please help

My battery is draining like CRAZY and i cant seem to find out what the issue is. Ive tried calibration several times and using a task manager that turns off running apps every few seconds(which seemed to make it worse) and that didn't help. Auto updates are turned off and fbook is only set to update every hour and brightness is set to minimum yet my battery only seem to last 8hrs. please help. i would really like to pinpoint what the issue is.
Oh...im running ERA Legendary 2.1, CPU speed and voltages are stock
That screenshot is worthless. It doesn't show anything useful. Percentages are meaningless. Get Betterbatterystats to see what is running as far as processes and partial wakes. Get CPUspy. To make sure your phone is going into deep sleep. Get Memory Booster Lite to see what is using your battery and get rid of the auto task killer. That will kill your battery fast.

i only posted the screen shot to show the time vs percentage. i already got rid of the task killer and here is a screenshot from better battery stats. idk how to stop the processes though...
Again the percentages mean nothing. In Gingerbread everything goes through Android system so it will always be highest. If you use your phone only an hour or two a day then it will drop to around 60% with cell standby getting higher. They will always add up to 100% whether on a minute or 10 hours.
You didn't post the partial wake locks screen. Also did you check CPUspy for deep sleep? Did you uninstall the autokiller? You can go into settings>applications>running services and stop applications that shouldn't be running like Facebook or music and video players, etc. Sometimes it's best to get an app like Bloat freezer and freeze apps that keep reloading if you don't use them often.

Another question and maybe the most important...what is your screen on time? I didn't see it in the screen shots. I think Max screen on Time I have gotten is right around 4hours. All the battery tweaks in the world wont help, if your screen is on a lot. Also...make sure to freeze drm, sns and system updates. Use randomlking's zip file.
If none of that works...wash, rinse, repeat. Wipe clean and reflash, rom and kernel.

As I'm sure you know, everyone's battery drainage is widely independent. However; I'm on "stock" Legendary 2.1 and recently with the updated Samurai kernel as well and run Juice Defender Ultimate. I've got some advance settings set but over the past 3-4 days, I average about 20 to 22 hours on a single charge.
My usage in an average day is: about 20-30 texts, about 10 minutes of phone calls, 10-12 emails in and out, 10 minutes of web, whatever app updates there may be and maybe about 15-30 minutes of light to medium use games.
If JDU is something you might want to look into, I would be more than willing to post my setup to get you started. <--For some reason, people are real stingy with their JDU settings.
This kinda thing just happens sometimes, and usually clears up on it's own. Especially common after flashing new software.

Battery drain on JB!

Is anyone else having big battery drain since updating to JB? I used to get 2 full days now i can't get 16 hours my phone is staying awake. I'm stock unrooted using juice defender plus. Thanks in advance.
I don't get as much battery I get about 8-14 hrs with 2-4 screen in time I use to get 10-20 hr with 3-4 hr screen on time. I hope they realise a update to help fix the issue seems like quite a few are having.

Yes. I suspect you're probably having the same problem as me. Ever since upgrading to JellyBean, the battery is horrible. Checked BetterBatteryStats, and it's because of msm_otg, it's constantly hitting the device with kernel wakelocks. If I look at CPU states, my phone has been in 384 MHz for 97% of the time, deep sleep 0% of the time. Since it's not sleeping, the battery is draining much faster.
It has something to do with USB on-the-go, but I can't figure it out.
I am having opposite experience. I am getting incredible(to me) battery life. Fully charge yesterday at 430pm and this morning after a bit of texting and calls, battery is at 80%. Pretty good and should be able to get at minimum 1.5 days usage out of it at current rate.
Also, disable Google Now. That's known to be a huge batt drainer.

Thanks, we'll see how it goes from here.
Did notice my battery was draining more before JB. Once I downloaded JB my battery seemed to drain worse. Finally figured out it was Nova launcher, so switched back to TW and battery is back to normal, with google now on, mainly just get traffic and weather for now.

I apologize for posting in the wrong section. The battery drain continues even after disabling Google Now uninstalling Facebook, pandora and other apps and turning off gps, bluetooth. Andriod OS is staying awake and killing the battery. In data usage delete apps is running in the background at 43 mb? Anyone else?
For me it started with LI3 then into JB.
I noticed Media was at the top of my list when i checked what apps were using battery.
So i ended up disabling the com.sec.android.providers.downloads and so far i think this has helped get my device back to normal battery life..

I don't like any apps that are supposed to save your battery. they usually contribute to battery drain. get better battery stats and see what's causing wakelocks. it's probably location services related to google now. when you don't need it, turn off gps AND location services

enable restrictions and make sure your wifi isn't when not needed same with your Data. if you don't have 4g, turn on only CDMA data. went from 50% every 4 hours just to 15%

Exact same issue for me. I will try this.
I have had severe battery drain for a few days now. I disabled google now yesterday and that didn't change anything. My phone was constantly warm. Today, I turned airplane mode on and the battery still drained. It got down to 58%. I read somewhere in this forum that the google maps update was causing some battery drain so I uninstalled the update at 58% battery life. Three hours later I had 57% battery life. So, for now I can only assume that it was google maps that was consuming my battery. I will have to try updating maps again to make this a more concrete assumption.

Help regarding battery life

Hi all I just got my galaxy note 2 yesterday but the battery life is bugging me.... I feel that it is not normal.. every 5 minutes or less the battery percentage drops by % 1 even if I am not opening any apps and I have GPS, mobile data and other unnecessary things turned off and just using Wi-Fi with power saving turned ON.. I even didn't used it that much yet, no videos or apps that consume a lot of CPU and I always make sure that I kill apps after using them, currently I am just surfing the web with chrome and it is still inconsistent sometimes it drops after 10 minutes and sometimes after 3 minutes, I also turn everything off except for power saving when I go to sleep but after waking up I noticed that it dropped by % 4 .. sorry for the long post guys but I am very worried and I just want to check if this is normal and if it's not I can get the battery or the whole device replaced since I have a 2 year warranty. I also attached some screenshots if you need to judge from them.

Have you updated your Note to 4.1.2?
I recently updated to 4.1.2 and my battery life has suffered.
Hopefully a new update will fix this.
Judging by what others have written, you should get between 6 to 7,5 hours with the screen on. I plugged mine in yesterday efter 1 day and 12 hours. This includes 8 hours om sleep and 6 hours at work -no time to use the phone at work. I did not make note of the screen on time.
As i write the phone has been on battery for 8,5 hours and the screen on for 1,5 hours. The battery is at 54%
Hope this helps.
Thanks for replying
But my device is still on 4.1.1 and haven't touched the software update option and still .. I am not getting that spectacular battery life everybody is reporting which bugs me since I love my note 2.. even while I am typing now the battery percentage has dropped by % 3

It's that a task killer icon in the top left corner? If so, you might first want to try if your batterylife improves after uninstalling that!
Also find the app called better battery stats on play store. I recommend you buy it and install it. EDIT: there is a free version of it on xda too... Then charge your phone to full and use it normally. When the battery starts to get low again, open the battery stats app and look for "partial wakelocks since unplugged"
There you might find the cause of your problems. Post the screenshot of the partial wakelocks screen here if you need help interpreting it!
There is a free XDA-edition of BetterBatteryStats as well.
I got similar battery life as Dmwitz reported, no idea how some people get 3 or 4 days or 7,8 h of screen-on time out of their device.
I have the same problem as you

That icon in your notification bar... Is that a task killer? If so, then that's your likely problem.
When you use task killers, apps that restart themselves or their services will constantly be starting up again, leading to more battery drain. Let android handle your running apps and only manually kill apps that are frozen or highly problematic (uninstall those problematic apps if you can).
Thanks for your suggestions guys I uninstalled the task killer and will try the battery app now, I will let you know once I try it

Solution for overnight battery drain.. Tested and working!!!

Whats up guys.. I have a one x and my battery just drains when i go to sleep... Around 20-23 percent.. Even with power saver on and all toggles off.. I tried many apps just to prevent this and still its the same result.. I heard about this app and i just want to share it to you.. Battery drain is down to 4-5 percent within a 10 hour period.. Thats just great!!! App is called Greenify and it hibernates your apps than drains battery.. Have a try and let me know.. Support the dev as well.. Cheerios!

Been using this for a while and it works well. Just understand what your 'greenifying' so you don't think apps are broken as a result.

Not hugely like yours but I use it among other things to get a good full day use out of my phone without limping towards end of the day.
I would use gsam to identify the app drain at night and greenify to help if you can't stop it with the app settings or a fresh install.

I used wake lock and saw google maps draining so much of my battery and I disabled it and so far 4 days battery is good... I mean it doesn't drain. Hope it works.
I use this Greenify with Deep Sleep battery saver at night, Wifi drains alot of unnecessary power in the night, deep sleep turns on wifi and sync every X hours. Managed to get 1 day and 11 hours with total of 3 hours screen time(i use my phone as a PDA not as a high performance device)

[Q] Battery Drain Issue

I am trying to troubleshoot my battery drain issue so I have been inserting a fully charged battery into my Note 2 just before bed.
Stock 4.1.2 ROM
Rooted
Night 1
Before bed: 100% battery, airplane mode
Wake up 7.5 hours later: 100% battery life
Night 2
Before bed: 100% battery, WiFi connected, background sync enabled
Wake up 7.6 hours later: 54% battery life
I have Greenify and BetterBatteryStats and still can't figure out what is sucking down the power.
Sync Interval:
Twitter: 4 hour
Facebook: 30 min
Touchdown HD: Push (exchange)
Reddit News: 12 hours
Any help would be appreciated!
I think you really have nearly answered your own question - it's the syncing that's killing your battery. FB is notoriously bad at draining a battery all on its own and the others may be bad too. The dead giveaway is the phone isn't deep sleeping anymore with sync on. Keep up your experiments but freeze each app/process in turn to see how bad each one is and you'll find out. No need to leave it over night - an hour or two should be plenty to find out. In fact, if you have your phone set for max battery life, it should go into deep sleep within minutes of locking it. Personally I only sync manually and that's including email - but I'm not too plugged in so I don't mind checking a couple times a day manually. It does mean killer battery life though! Really any process that is constantly waking up your phone will do the same thing as fb - Google Now with location history on is another bad one.

I use fb and I get no battery drain from it
Still unsure about which app is the main culprit. Facebook seems like it could be the biggest problem. Attached is my dump from BBS (BetterBatteryStats) I tried the same thing as the night before except I did the following
Facebook Sync: Never
Twitter Sync: Never
Touchdown HD: Push (exchange)
Reddit News: 12 hours
Night 3:
100% battery before bed, background sync enabled.
52% Battery by wake up.
NOTE: 10076 (Wifi) (com.android.vending.Google Play Store): 86.0 MBytes 95.3% was my apps updating just after boot. After all apps were done updating, I put the phone to sleep until morning.
Things I am going trying.
Freeze Samsung Push
Freeze ChatOn
Greenify Facebook
You need to understand that virtually any app that has the ability to poll your phone and push updates to it automatically without you visibly seeing it is going to drain your battery. This includes:
1. GPS
2. Having your data on in general (networks push packets to each other to stay within protocols regardless)
3. Google Accounts (syncs your calender, contacts, people, etc.)
4. Google Now
5. Mail
etc, etc.
I know this is a little off subject but will face book still drain Battery even if you have location off and sync off?
Facebook Messenger was an issue. It kept waking up my device. I have been doing some testing though and have had almost no luck until tonight.
I disabled WiFi before bed with 100% battery. 7 hours later, 91% battery.
I need to find which apps are using WiFi so heavily.

I have been using Greenify the whole time. Currently, it looks like when on WiFi apps are going crazy with connecting and waking up the phone. On Mobile, I got much better battery life.
Try backing up all ur data on internal and SD card.. Then do a complete fresh install.
