Hello i have not seen a thread about launchers, the only reason i ask is are any of you trying out apex are nova launchers?? what are your experiences with them? are which do you prefer??
I'm using Apex. It's free, simple, and it does what I want. I think Nova would also work for me. I've used Nova on another device, and I only chose Apex on the note because I've never tried it before.
Things I want on my note's launcher:
6x8 grid of icons on the launcher (I like to arrange them in a hex pattern like the old winmo 6.5 start menu)
7 icons on the dock
vertically scrolling app tray because I hate paging.
6x6 grid in the app tray
app tray sorted alphebetically
Losing the special s pen launcher page didn't bother me. It only had the S Note widget on it, and it was easy to put that on another page. It was an excellent trade off for the better use of screen real estate.
press menu on the app tray than choose view type and than choose alphabetical grid
I'm using Holo Launcher HD. I first used it because it was the default launcher in slimbean on my vibrant. I find that the more I use it, the better I like it.
nove prime here. love it.
I use nova too, it's great!
Nova is still the best working one out there for me. Smooth. Customizable. Always end up back at that launcher.

This is a great thread about launchers and lockscreens for the Note II. :victory:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1936451
I've jumped between Nova and Holo HD on my tablet for a while but ADW EX has been my go to on every phone I've had since my Samsung Moment. And with the update from just a few days ago I'm not changing it anytime soon.
noted for future reference on my Note 2
Good stuff, thanks allot fellas..

Apex Launcher Pro and Nova Prime here. ...
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
Apex Launcher Pro
- I remove the dock
- 6x6 Home/Drawer
- Gestures
--- Swipe Up; Open Drawer
--- Swipe Down: Show Notification Shade
--- Double Tap home screen for menu
I like the gestures on Apex, helps with one-handed operation.
I know others have gestures, but Apex is the only one I tried, recently,
that the 'swipe up' also closes the app drawer. I swipe up to show it and
swipe up again to close it. Other launchers make you hit the 'home' or 'back'
button again. When you are using the stylus, it's quicker and more efficient.
The styus doesn't activate the 'back' button and I'm not using it to hit the 'home' button.

another vote for nova prime
Short Answer - Nova Launcher
Long answer -
I have tried the following launchers one by one while freshly installing new AOKP nighlties (every 5-6 days) in this order -
Nova Launcher (Free), Apex Launcher (Free), ADW (Paid), Go launcher Ex (Free),Launcher Pro (Free).
These are my ratings in descending order -
1. Nova Launcher worked the best for me. Smooth, small footprint, stock looks. I used free version. Paid version has gesture support, can hide apps, etc. I don't need those features.
2. GO Launcher was good but I had to apply theme to make it look like stock, so that was an extra step.
3. ADW was smooth but had to apply a theme and it hasnt been updated in some months
4. Apex lagged a bit while scrolling apps or recents window.
5. Launcher Pro was good, but the developer has moved on to other projects and its been more than a year since this app was last updated.
Apex.
Tried both it and Nova - no difference in stability or performance for me and Apex gave me things for free that Nova required payment for.
Then when they added the Pro version, it added even more features.
I would just like to throw my thought into here saying Apex.

Currently using apex pro, but nova is nice too.
Apex pro for me, from my experience its smoother than Nova, and saw that apex gets updated more often.
Via Galaxy Nexus [LTE]
Apex PRO #1
Nova Launcher Prime
and its not really a home launcher but I would have a hard time doing without Wave Launcher.

Have tried : Trebuchet, Apex and have to say Nova Prime is by far the best imho. Used it on my Note and was the only one with zero lag on the ICS leak. Absolutely love it on the Gnex, got the prime beacuse I like to support the Dev's along with the perks it offers.
Nova Prime or Launcher7 (donate).
Apex Pro... It has notification badges for sms, mail, calls. I am addicted to that lol.
Nova launcher hands down. Love this setup with aokp
Long press back to kill app. Long press app drawer for search. Long press home for recents.

Apex for me.
The best which I just switched to is Apex. I was using NOVA before and I must say that it caused a lot of lag.
Apex is awesome and most of the gestures which u have to pay for in NOVA are free on apex.

I prefer apex. You can remove the persistent search bar. And with apex you can simply long press the screen to add an app or widget, and i think with nova you have to do it from the app drawer and drop it on the screen.

no, nova has both options... for months too.
Try both. Personal I find that apex is still playing catchup on features and speed. But its really a preference over better option at this point in the race.
In reality it just comes down to personal preference. Some roms are better suited for them. It's up to you to choose.
Well I just came from rooted mytouch 4g and loved the endless possibilities of being rooted! But I don't want to root this GN2 yet because of warranty but enough said I want to change my dpi or just change the size of things and love a good launcher with lots of themes but not any launcher IV tried has abilities to change icon size or dpi...
Any one found a good launcher besides nova prime, or go launcher

I hate Go Launcher. It used to be great. Then they switched over to GetJar to download themes, and they have Free to download but pay to use themes. It's a huge mess. I personally like Nova or Apex. Although now that ADW has updated their app, I've been using that. I have to say it works pretty well, though each time I reboot I have to reset it as the default launcher.
I love the stock launcher with a few exceptions; I don't understand why they made the pages a 4x4 grid. The Note fully justifies a 5x5 grid. I wish that the other launchers gave you the ability to quick-scroll between pages in the homescreen and in the dock like the stock touchwiz launcher does.
I changed my DPI to 280 and use Go Launcher with a 6x6 grid and works very well. Now the stock Samsung keyboard and dialer did not scale correctly, but I use Swipe and the Go Dialer.
Adw has gotten as lot better and after a haitus from it I'm back and it's better than it had ever been

Not finding that on the play store. Are you referring to a theme or an actual launcher?

Still stuck on Nova launcher. Fast, stable and the backup feature is in the free version. $4 for the pro, gives you message and email counts on the icons, just like TW.

You could simply use one of the toolkits. And if something happens you can use it revert back to complete stock.

Well, I finally invested the time in learning enough about Lightning Launcher. It's really COMPLETELY different than other launchers I've tried, which is what I like about it. I've tried Apex, ADW, Nova and briefly touched GO -- they're all pretty much the same -- all pretty good. Lightning is kind of a big pain to figure out and it doesn't give the option for a scrollable dock, but you can pin, resize, rotate and arrange all icons, widgets and folder labels in whatever way you want, all on a zoomable, scrollable page. You can't really apply themes, but you can make up whatever you want. Your screen is really like a window onto an infinite desktop that you have full control over. It doesn't have the fancy animation options that the others do, so there's not a lot of "Wow" factor for others to see, but I have everything accessible from a single screen that doesn't feel too cluttered with icons. Lightning is free from Play and doesn't require root.
FWIW, here's a screen shot of my home page -- The two rows of icons at the bottom are pinned as well as the Google search widget at the top. Everything else moves and zooms in or out behind the pinned stuff. If I want, I can place other items above, below, or to the sides and just scroll to them. Lightning does support other pages that you can switch to with a two-finger swipe, and I use them as sort of a sandbox for trying things out, but everything I want is on my main home page.
I've been using atom launcher for a while first on my s2 and now on my note2. It will let you create folders which is nothing new but you can scroll with your finger or with the S Pen. Also you can vary the opacity of the icons on the home screen if you want to keep some what of a clean look. I'll post pics to better explain.

I am using Apex. Great launcher. Fast scrolling and screen transitions. You can install some nice themes and change the icon packs.

I'm pretty sure I've tried them all, and seem to always revert back to Nova Pro. Its fast, stable, has nice features without be gimmicky like Go and some of the others. Bottom line I want something that works that isn't at burden on system resource, Nova fits that bill.

Root modifies your devices's firmware, so...no :/
Is there already a launcher 5x6 and more?
With SGS3 5x6 was perfect, so no doubts we need something like that here also!
Anyone seen something like that?
You try the Nova launcher. It's not TouchWiz, so you will miss out on the buddy pages for extract pen, insert headphone, etc, but you'll have a lot more additional functionality to play with. I bought Nova launcher and love my 5x7 grid, 7 icons in the dock, resizeable widgets, etc. It's just that little bit extra..

Also on Nova! Fast, small & reliable. Nearly all functions available in free version too.

I`m using Nova with my grid set at 10x8. You need to press volume down while in Nova settings to enable the Lab settings and tick the Big Grid Size Options.
You can take a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960039
Keep in mind that Nova has wallpaper cropping issue.

Go Launcher Ex allows this and other enhancements. It seems fast and light on resources, and works with S-Pen functionality like the pop-up Notepad when the S-Pen is taken out of its dock.

That's actually a Note2 function. Works with any good launcher, so Nova too...
There's also a function to be bound to the "insert headphone" act; the only thing missing are the additional buddy pages for these actions, but speaking for myself, that's hardly a miss... YMMV

I just recently got my GS3. On my old phone, Launcher Pro was the best for me. In fact, it was one of my few paid apps. Launcher Pro does not work very well anymore. I just don't think it has been updated to newer hardware / ICS / JB. In any event, I've come across two that I like fairly well. Apex and Nova. Both are fairly similar. In fact, I'm having a hard time finding many differences between the two.
What ARE the differences between the two?
Which is worth buying (for the premium version)?
I've been running Nova launcher over APEX purely because of the ability to backup and restore widgets to your homescreens. This saves some time when you flash ROM's. Also if you are coming from another launcher, Nova allows you to import (to some extent) most of the homescreen layouts from your previous launcher. This helped when I first made the transition from APEX to Nova. I can't really comment on the difference between the paid vs free because I've only used the paid version of Nova. In regards to fluidity, I'd say they are almost exactly the same.
^ agreed. both are essentially the same. i'm with Nova for the backup and restoring feature as well. ^_^
Been using both, for me, I like Apex, you can mix different themes.

Exactly the same here. Used Apex for probably a year and just made the switch to Nova a few weeks back. Glad I did. As mentioned above, more gestures and back-up/restore features.
I used to use Apex launcher but switched to Nova launcher because the color theme option.
I do prefer Apex launchers for their better screen lock and their UCCW widgets can fill the screen better.
Don't forget that there is a labs option for nova launcher which lets you have additional features. Hold down volume for like 2 seconds to get them.
If you flash a lot of ROM's and use lots of widgets, then Nova is the better option IMO.
The reason is because Nova restores Widgets (using backup/restore settings) soooo much easier.
Restoring backed up desktop widgets with Apex was a PITA compared to Nova.
Also, Nova has better drawer options, IMO.
I do wish both would offer more theme/transition effects though.
I purchased the pro/donate version for both and ran both for alternating periods of time.
My vote goes to Nova, however I have used Apex in the past and it is also very good. Nova for backup though.
Used Apex on my S2, but using Nova on my S3. Not sure why, but Nova seems to be smoother to me on the S3.

They seem to be the same. My only problem with both Apex and Nova is the swiping screens isn't fast enough.

Have you tried adjusting the animation and transition speeds in Nova Settings? It has an option for increased speed performance. It may take away from the graphical fluidity, but should increase speed between page swipes.
Nova make wallpaper non scrollable?

Sure ... there's even an option to have it scroll in the opposite direction of the swipe if you will!
I always used Trebuchet because im a CM10 loyalist, but after reading this thread I took a dive on Nova Prime without previewing the free version. It was a great decision, everything seems smoother and the backup/restore features are awesome. Which is one of my gripes with trebuchet, I always had to set everything up after flashing.
Go Nova! :good:
