Papyrus has a cool feature where you can assign functionality to the side button, such as the eraser. But it won't work with the Note 8 because:
"Unfortunately, Samsung does not currently allow third party applications to access the S Pen side button. We really hope Samsung will change this in the future". http://papyrus.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/118053-why-doesn-t-my-s-pen-side-button-work-
That's terrible! Is there a way around this by rooting and installing a tweaked ROM?
Thanks
Well, as far as I understand it, Samsung released an SDK called S Pen SDK already when the Note I was released. This SDK can be used by any third-party app.
The description of the SDK says:
What is the S Pen SDK ?
By using the S Pen SDK, you can easily add various S Pen features to your applications. It provides the necessary
functionality to take 100% advantage of the S Pen, including checking if the S Pen is activated, checking coordinates,
sensing pen pressure, detecting the on/off status of the side button on the pen, and handling hover events, which is supported on Android Ice Cream Sandwich or later.

(Source: http://developer.samsung.com/s-pen-sdk)
And really, part of this SDK is a class called SPenTouchListener, which has methods for touches with pressed side button.
See this: http://img-developer.samsung.com/onlinedocs/spen_2_3/index.html
The onTouchButtonDown and onTouchButtonUp methods seem to be what the devs of your third-party app need.
It's definitely not true that third-party apps don't have access to the S Pen side button. Maybe if you point the devs of that app to this page, they will add it :fingers-crossed:
Checking out the app's description they already praise "Active pen" support, which seems to equal S Pen support on Note devices. Considering that, it's even more strange that the side button does not work.
i know in layerpaint on the gn10.1 you could use the side button and tap to switch from pen/brush to eraser and back. only bad part was that if you didn't time it right you'd end up taking a screenshot too. i haven't used it a all with the gn8 yet.
I use the side button as an eraser in Lecture Notes. I don't know why that can't be done in Papyrus, they are both third party apps.

Howdy gurus,
Is there any apps out there that would allow me to write on the actual screen on the Note 8? I mean, can I use my S-Pen to highlight, take notes on the actual screen?

Hoping I understood your question correctly :
If by desktop you mean like windows or mac, then you could use a remote client like splashtop remote/vnc etc.
or there is another app called virtual tablet that makes your note a virtual tablet for your computer (though pressure sensitivity does not work, but other features can be used)
However if what you are asking is all to do on the note itself then there are a plenty of apps that let you do that and have pen support.
for example in pre installed s-note you can switch between writing pen/pencil/ highlighter / eraser.
I mostly prefer handwriting recognition in the samsung keyboard as with that I can do a lot more in most of office like apps.
Search for 'Snap Pad Free' on the play store. You can set the paper transparency to 100% if you wish so it looks like you are drawing directly on the desktop or within any app (it's always available)... then to save, simply make a screenshot. Done.
That's the closest app I know to what you're asking for.

Hello, I often hear that EveryNote is the best note taking app. What is the difference between it and S Note, Lecture Note?
S Note can only sync between Samsung devices, and the old&new versions aren't compatible with one another. Evernote files can be accessed on any device that supports Evernote. Never used Lecture Note, so can't speak for that.
There's a free trial of lecturenotes. It's best to try it and see for yourself since we all have different needs when it comes to software. Then you can compare the three yourself.
Since I find the cross platform treatment of hand written notes lacking in evernote I use lecturenotes and sync exported pdf files via dropsync to dropbox. Evernote is okay in my opinion but not as feature rich when it comes to taking hand written notes.
When it's all said and done, none of the three are perfect and I personally find that I wish for a feature or two from the others.

The newer versions of s note can indeed sync with evernote. This is how I got one year of premium evernote services.

Initially when I purchased the Note Pro the notes that I'd take in S-Note and sync with Evernote were practically useless to me on my Mac/PC. Has this changed? They'd be saved in a proprietary format or an image file that was too small physically to be useful to read on my high res screens. PDF export was an option but with the limited page size support in S-Note I found myself looking elsewhere in a hurry for a note taking tool that truly mimics a letter sized note pad.
I bought a program a while back that I can comment on. It's called Handrite note Notepad Pro. By NC Corp. Needed it before I owned a device with SNote built in. I used to use my finger..... But now with my pen, I like it even more. But I already bought it so I didn't have to decide if I wanted it over the other OP ideas and other suggestions from muzzy996. It syncs using Dropbox through an additional program that is called Open Sync and that is free. Works well. But the handwriting Pro is cool and features some neat options. Might not be everyone's cup of tea with how it replaces text as you write but most things are adjustable.
Microsoft’s Onenote beta is very good. Handwriting is good, syncs with PC, you can search handwritten notes on computer (but not on tablet).

I wasn't aware of the size issue. I had some old notes that transferred over and indeed they are not full size. I don't know if that's just for the screen, maybe they would print out on normal size paper? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. ...
No problem. Yeah S-Note simply doesn't work for me in terms of page setup options. It's fine for simple note taking but sometimes I prefer being able to generate a set of notes with a specific page setup in mind such as a letter sized page in a particular orientation with a particular layout of lines/grids as a background.

How is Google Keep compared with Everynote, S Note and Lecture Note?
Rather simplistic compared to the others. I haven't revisited it in months but as far as I know there's no active stylus support in Google keep.

For me Everynote and Google keep are like a collection of sticky notes. Ln and Snote are more like a collection of notebooks with more pages and options to manage large notebooks. Those apps are for completely different use cases with Ln being focused on students and many notebooks.

Indeed.
Lecturenotes has quite a bit of features though it doesn't always do a good job of providing them in a user friendly way. As an example, pen colors and line thicknesses can be shown in a toolbox on screen but for everything else one must drill down through menus. It would be nice if toolboxes were available for other functions as well in that software.
Its definitely more powerful than the others though even if there are limitations in some respects. An example of the power of lecturenotes is the ability to work on multiple layers (i think the limit is 3) which can be helpful when one is working with graphical elements vs writing/text. An example of limitations in Lecturenote is whereas in SNote when an image is pasted into a note it always remains as an editable image (you can click on it to move it and resize it), in lecturenotes that isn't necessarily the case. In lecturenotes if you want to change the size or location of a pasted image on your page you must select the image using the marquee tool and then expanding the image at that point comes with loss in clarity as it is scaled up. Overall the power of lecturenotes is great though.

What is the page size issue in S-Note?
If you import s-note files into evernote they are physically smaller.. in other words you can't use the s-pen to edit in evernote because the size of the note is too small and does not take up the entire screen like in s-note.
It goes beyond that for me. If all one ever wants is to work within the confines of the Samsung Galaxy Note ecosystem everything is good when it comes to S-note. However, if the need is to take notes on predefined page sizes for printing there is no way to do so. All one has in terms of page types is landscape or portrait orientation with a variety of backgrounds and form types, there is no way to control paper size. These do not print well at US Letter or other page types. I bought this larger note because it's screen is closer in size to a real letter page and yet the applications baked in don't support that.
The is why I use lecturenotes. I have complete freedom to do custom sizes for printing.

Do you mean electronically speaking, the notes are fine. However, they do not print well on papers? How about saving/printing them in pdf format and then send the file to the printer? I use A4 size notes as notes for my work. I am considering to write notes electronically on the Note PRO 12.2. Of course, I do hope to be able to print it out like a A4 size note. Is this possible? If not, from your post, it seems that lecturenotes can do it.

On a standard yellow notepad in US Letter size there are 28 lines available to write on. In S-Note if one creates a notebook using the standard lined page in portrait orientation there are only 18 lines available. To fix this one has to avoid using lines completely by using a blank portrait template. Then what you do is go into the notebook, click the gear icon and change the background, click the upper left box for blank white page, then hit pattern, then pick the second from the right box on the top row.
Once this is all done you have a page that approximates a standard yellow pad.
EXCEPT if you print this thing, it doesn't fill the entire width of an A4 or Letter sheet. When printed to fit on letter, you lose 1.7 inches of width of the page. When printed to fit on A4 you lose 1 inch of width. Doesn't sound like much but on average you're losing 20% of available space on a page.
Its all a bit convoluted and honestly I rather not deal with the BS of it all and I opt to go to LectureNotes instead. With it, I'm able to set up all aspects of a notebook at the time of its creation. Additionally I can place items on different layers to move things around if I wish. The only thing I missin Lecturenotes is how S-Note handles images that are pasted in. In S-Note these pasted images remain as editable objects allowing you to move them and scale them about as you please. In LectureNotes you need to be careful of where you place images because they no longer are treated like smart objects.
Thanks. By losing certain inches of width of the page during printing, do you mean those parts are being cut off? Isn't is possible to scale down the entire page to make printing of everything possible?
If I just draw images, than there should not be a problem in LectureNotes? So, there is no perfect app. I don't want to choose an app, make a lot of things using it. Then, later find that there are some limitations and switch to another app while losing the stuffs I create using the first chosen app.
There DEFINITELY is no perfect app.
See the attachment below. Notice the white vertical strip. That white strip you'll never be able to write in . . . the darkened corners of the notepad image is the absolute corners on the tablet itself when you zoom/pan around in the notepad.
Edit: To clarify, the image attached is what a printed page would look like on US Letter when a page layout of portrait is selected in S-note and the user fills the entire page with notes (simulated by me drawing at the extreme corners). The print is maximized to the long side of the page.
Hi All I got my note pro 12.2 and mainly will used it for studying and note taking and lectures and word , excel so on
so please every one tell me his best apk for studying and note taking , knowing that i used spen its good but my main problem the page size is too small, I canot make it llarger using the multi window mode
so any help with making the page bigger or a btter apk for that?
also , I want to know how to conncet my note pro to projector for ppt presentations?
I also use my Note when I'm in meetings and I do one of two things. If the meeting is short then I just use the S Pen to jot notes down then type them up later. I use Papyrus as my jotting program. Simple and easy to use. I don't use S Note as it's a little too simple and not nearly enough options.
For long meetings I have a bluetooth keyboard. I will be reviewing that later. I use Google Docs as it's easy to use and saves everything to the cloud as well as on my tablet. I also use Sheet for my Excel sheets. There is genuine Microsoft Word and Excel for the tablet however if you don't have a subscription to Office 365 then you can't save anything.
There are plenty of other apps out there that might be ideal for you however I think for me I've found the right balance.
I'd love to have a Docs program that can integrate S Pen scribbles and is very fully functional.
I recently found Microsoft's One Note.
It has a decent amount of functionality as well as pen support. But what I REALLY like is the way it organizes eveything.
You can have multiple "notebooks" like SNote, but then you can have multiple 'chapters' inside each one.
I'll second the suggestion for One Note. Microsoft has done a killer job with the app's UI/UX and having the ability to automatically sync with my Microsoft account (which, in turn, lets it sync on my PC) is fantastic.

There are 3 methods:
1. MHL/HDMI-Adaptor (Samsung has 3, MHL1, MHL2 and a MHL3 Adapter). With a Full-HD Monitor I use the MHL2 Version, because I don't have a 4k projector/Monitor.
2. Miracast. But Miracast can only do one thing: copy the Screen.
3. My prefered method for projectors: Chromecast.
thanks all for reply and really sorry didnt reply fast

Yes, thats the Problem with Microsofts apps. I have installed PowerPoint Preview, Excel Preview and Word Preview, but I use it in "Readonly" mode to view mail attachments or show Presentations with S-Pen Support.
I use my Note for planning projects, setting agendas, taking meeting minutes and setting TO-DO. lists.
For this I use Evernote. Most things are done with the keyboard, note taking is with the Spen or voice recognition.
I know Evernote isn't for everyone, but you get a years premium subscription with the Note pro so give it a go.
Keeps everything orderly in its place.
i love squid(papyrus) for note taking. it seems like u can draw and jot on a very large paper!
+1 One Note : PC Synchronisation & management
I love PDF Max 4 for highlighting text.
I read a lot of medical literature, and PDF Max 4 in in combination with a bigger stylus (Wacom Bamboo or so) has just the right workflow for highlighting text very precisely and very easily . Ideal tool for exam preparations, much better than any other app I tried so far.
I think my most used productivity app is Inkredible. It allows me to draw in vector and export it as a vector PDF, so I can import it directly into Illustrator. May not be as useful for everyone else, but I'm a designer, so it saves me time.
Note taking I do in Papyrus, and texts I write in Droidedit. Droidedit lacks formatting, which means less hassle when importing into Indesign.
Now all I need is a proper Adobe package for Android and I'm all set...
(I'm obviously using a Wacom Bamboo for Note stylus, and I still hate the fact that my Intuos stylus doesn't work on this.)
No one tried Fiinote?
Shock horror.
Features:
.draw
.voice notes
.keyboard
.handwrite
.infinite page size
.widgets
Your welcome.

I second the Chromecast option. I think the Chromecast is the best $35 I've ever spent. Another thing I like about it is having 2 daughters, who are usually glued to their phones, Chromecast has a lot of games you can play with multiple people and everyone uses their own device, like being able to see your letters is Scrabble while the board is on the projector. It's just a fun way to spend time with my girls instead of them staying in their rooms being antisocial.
INKredible - Handwriting Note is great, i used to install a similar app on my Ipad (i don't know if it is this app or not but same features)
Very convenient to take note what came across my mind, but i think it would be disaster if handwriting is bad and ugly
apk if you need: http://choilieng.com/apk-on-pc/com.viettran.inkredible.apk
I would like to find a good note taking app for the S3. One that takes advantage of the stylus.
So far, I've tried Microsoft OneNote and an app called LectureNotes. I've not liked OneNote because of poor palm rejection. LectureNotes is pretty good. But it's a bit unintuitive. Any alternative suggestions would be appreciated!
Squid is very good for writing but poor text input feature.
but I think Squid is the best one out there.
You can write with S pen and delete with finger
I'm using OneNote because it seems to be the only note taking app that will allow me to create forms I can write on.
It's true, the palm rejection on this app is not the greatest. I've trained myself to dip the tip of the pen toward the screen first, which will tell OneNote to begin palm rejection. Using that methodology, the annoyances are reduced.
I'm still on a hunt for something though, so I'll post here if I find something that works, or will visit to see if someone else has a good solution.
I use both squid and OneNote. I think squid is my general go-to but I like that OneNote is sync'd across all of my devices (multiple platforms).
As opposed to the post above, I have my squid settings a little different. I use the side button for erasing and my finger for navigating.
Thank you for the suggestions. I've now had a chance to play around with Squid, OneNote and LectureNotes. For my needs, LectureNotes is best. Here are some comparisons.
1. I like OneNote for its integration with OneDrive and the MS Office Suite. But poor palm rejection makes it unusable for me.
2. Squid is very easy and intuitive to use. Compared to it, LectureNotes has almost too many features and setting. What I don't like about Squid is the pricing model: to unlock customizability features you need to buy a monthly/yearly subscription. If they had a one-time pay option, I would have bought it.
3. LectureNotes has a steep learning curve (for a note taking app). When I first tried to create a new notebook and just start using my S pen, I was not able. Could not figure out what I had done wrong. But then I more carefully created a new notebook. Everything started working fine.
Squid! A fantastic app!
You may want to check out MyScript Nebo preview. It can convert your handwritten notes to text if you want or need. Something to check out.

You can also try out app "HandWrite Pro Note & Draw". It seems quite good as well..
I have tried MyScript Nebo in other platforms and can assure you it is a wonderful note taking app. Just waiting for it to get more stable.

@ckelly33 How do you set side button for erasing only in squid as when you press it the Samsung Spen menu interface pops up always for me
In squid I use my finger to erase not the side button, but I don't think you can change the button.
I do highly recommend "NEBO Preview". I have used OneNote and a few others but NEBO lets you export to MS Word and has an incredible writing recognision in various languages that you can download. Additionally you can note math and it recognises those as math and is able to solve those for you.
Best regards,

INKredible is awesome!
Onenote seems to have been updated and works much better for palm rejection in my limited testing. Can someone confirm from their side?
Thanks!
Even if I've always appreciated the high level of customization of LectureNotes, I think that Onenote should be the preferred way for me to go for writing handwritten notes during my Math lessons, sharing them with my students and storing them in some cloud (Onedrive).
Last year Onenote worked ok with a Windows 10 Microsoft Surface tablet on which I've installed the full version of Onenote (I think Onenote 2013).
But, unless I'm missing something, writing notes in the Galaxy Tab S3 with the free but rather limited Android version of Onenote is not good enough for the lack of some basic tool as "select some ink" (lasso select) and move/copy/cut/delete it or a tool like "insert space".
I can't understand why these two very basic tools aren't offered in the Android version (it seems they are available in the iPad version, at least the lasso selection).
Hopefully they will be added in future upgrades of the app.
But for now I'm afraid I'll have to do with my (much heavier and cumbersome) Surface for writing notes in the classroom giving up using the much more lighter and agile Tab S3.
I'm really enjoying the features of Squid but just learned that it will not sync across devices. Very disappointed. Wondering if s pen features will be as easy in Evernote...
This is a bit of an old thread. Did the OP make a choice? I'm using a combo of ported S-Note and Lecturenotes just like I had on my 10.1 and have on Note 4. S-note is overall nicer and syncs with Evernote but won't allow making a widget out of a note unless you use Touchwiz. Lecturenotes does do that and has a lot of customization power but needs something like foldersync to synchronize with my Note 4 and can only be viewed on pc or Evernote by creating a PDF.

it s pretty good
I use S Note https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.android.snote for two main reasons
1) It supports handwriting recognition and so I can search for my notes
2) I can sync my notes between my Tab S3 tablet and Note 8 phones through owncloud (I don't use any other 3rd party cloud storage providers as I prefer to have my files saved in my own hard disks)
I tried them all and ended up with Onenote because I can access it anywhere including my note 8 phone. I like that Snote can Convert to text although when I do so the formating, text size and spaceing is for me so out of wack. With OneNote I can select and convert to text on computer if I need to do so for say meeting notes. I Just wish it would work on the screen off Memo.

Hello,
The questions is off topic, but this is probably the best place to ask
* how good is Samsung Tab S3 for pencil note taking?
Can you compare the precision with Samsung Note phone stylus? Can it replace a physical/paper notebook?
Many thanks!
