Official Sprint JB Build VPBLJ7
Port to T-Mobile SGH-T999
This is a fully stock port of Sprints Official Jellybean release, build VPBLJ7.
Based on the official stock firmware released by sextape and patched with T-Mobiles latest JB leak UVDLI8.
My ultimate goal with this is to have a fully working, stock JB release that is stable enough to match our upcoming official release from T-Mobile! In the end, this will contain a lot of what you would expect to find in T-Mobile's release, yes this includes some bloat! (Not all bloat!) From there, I will try to get out some modded variants to play with!
Hopefully, you will find this to already be good enough to use as your daily driver. (I have been running this version for the last week and have had virtually no issues at all!) I made the initial port in the first few days after Sprint's release, and after some tests and adjustments, I feel it is already quite close to meeting my goal! :fingers-crossed:
Goals:
Fast and Stable enough to rival T-Mobiles unreleased official JB!
Provide a good daily driver to satisfy those who just...can't....wait!
Provide a strong, stable base for developers to play with!
FEATURES
Code:
[CENTER]Sprint Build VPBLJ7 + T-Mobile Leak UVDLI8
Insecure Stock UVDLI8 Kernel
Init.d support
Deodexed
Zipaligned
CarrierIQ Free
Rooted with latest SuperSU 0.97
Latest BusyBox 1.20.2 from Linus Yang
Good Battery Life!
No Flickering![/CENTER]
What's Working
Code:
[CENTER]WiFi Band Selection
HSPA+21/+42 confirmed!
WiFi Tethering / Hotspot
(Use Sprint Hotspot App)
BT Tethering
Camera/Camcorder + audio
exFat Support
Smart Stay
Smart Rotation
Play Store - T-Mobile Account Billing[/CENTER]
Not Working
Code:
[CENTER]Bluetooth Calling
It has been reported that there are problems with making and receiving calls via Bluetooth.
Data and streaming seem to work fine. I am working on a fix now. Thanks for your patience guys!
WiFi Calling
(I will try to either port the code into this ROM, and/or I will make a second one which trades Smart Rotation for this)
4G Reporting
(So far it only shows 3G in the Status Bar, and UMTS:3 as Mobile Network Type)
(I have been able to fix it so it does connect to HSPA+, it is only the reporting that is wrong.)[/CENTER]
The only "extra" I have added to this rom is the WiFi Band Switcher.
It will allow you to switch between Auto, 2.4GHz, and 5.0GHz for your wireless connection!
I know this is technically not stock, but it brings back previous stock functionality which should never have been removed!
Huge Thanks to madmack from the International GS3 forum for his work and allowing me to use it here!!!
Please visit his thread and Thank him for this!

Flash as you would any other ROM!

Thanks to everyone for the fantastic feedback!
Check out the Jellybomb theme ported by wcoast!
Dont forget to thank him for his work! :highfive:
I can't wait to start getting feedback from everybody! Naturally, let me know of any bugs/issues you have, but there are one or two things I would like for someone to confirm for me.
As I mentioned, HSPA+21 seems to be working just fine for me, and it is just the reporting of your connection type that is wrong. I do not have HSPA+42 in my area, so if someone who does can run some speed tests and report back that would be great! I fully expect it to be working, but as I said, I just cannot confirm this myself.
I can verify +21 in that I consistently am getting downlink speeds between 9-12Mbps! As far as I can remember, this would not be possible on any pre-hspa+21 tech, and these are the speeds which can often be expected on a +21 network.
I am hoping to see some reports of 17-22Mbps, or greater, from some of you lucky folks in an area with +42!
I believe the problem lies in Sprint's framework, since it wasn't coded to ever expect or use hspa+. I should be able to add this in...we will see!
Another thing I am hoping for verification on, and doubt itll take long to get, is WiFi Tethering. It does work for me, and I am on the Android Preferred 5GB plan which is not supposed to have Tethering support, so I fully expect it to work for everyone! I would just like to get confirmation of this in case I am only able to use it because of something left over from my old plan. Doubtful, but you never know!
NOTE: About exFat support. I did confirm that you can use a sdcard formated as exFat. However, I do not recommend this, use Fat32 if possible. The main reason for this, is the lack of support for it beyond this rom. Other kernels will likely not be able to make use of this format, and currently, neither CWM nor TWRP are able to. So if you are trying out different stuff, or are a flash addict, you will only run into problems down the line.
I would only recommend using exFat if you are using a 64GB micro SDXC, and are planning to stay with a single rom for a while.
Regarding WiFi Calling. I know this is a major feature for a lot of you, so I will probably release a second version of this rom that carries wifi calling support. The current port has all of the required components, and I believe is ready for WiFi calling, but since this is a Sprint build, it did not include the options in the Settings menus to enable it. If I do go with a second version, for now, it will be a trade off of sorts. You will likely have to give up Smart Rotation, and potentially other features. I will do my best to minimize this, and i will be trying to port WiFi calling into the current build so we can get the best of everything!
If anyone has any tips, or insight into any of this, I would be happy to hear it!
Remember, this is intended to be a Stock build only. Extra mods and features will not be included, though you are welcome to post them if you have them for others to use! Im planning on releasing modded versions in the near future as well. And provided it turns out to be good enough, I will be looking forward to what else our devs can do with this one!
I tested as much as I could as thoroughly as I could, but I am sure some of you will find some issues I did not.
In the end, I just hope you guys enjoy the rom and everyone finds at least parts of it to be useful!
Happy Flashing!!!
Screenshots!
Here are a few screenshots I took a few days ago to show how the battery has been on this rom!

Hahaha! Thanks for the morning laugh. Wishful thinking but looks like we are forecasted for release early 2013 the earliest from what I've heard. Tmo is so slow to roll out their stuff; I completely agree with you on that!

That'll link to the link where I heard about 4.1.2. Or more specifically heard it implied! 1st paragraph mentions AT&T getting official JB next week, but it says 4.1.2. Could be a typo, not sure.
But it stands to reason that if Sammy passed 4.1.2 to ATT, they've done the same for the rest. I'm expecting its a typo.
I did read somewhere else that the 4.1.1 updates are still coming as planned, but we can expect 4.1.2 in Q1 of next year. Wish I could remember where I saw it! That'd be cool though if it got fasttracked to us! Regardless of the version, I'm looking forward to yet another JB release to mess with!
Looking forward to your feedback on this one! Thanks guys!

I don't think it'd be just in SystemUI. I think it also requires the framework. Also I haven't determined/tested yet if swapping it out will cause any other problems with general functionality and resource ids.
Ill certainly give it a shot though! Thanks!

Everything has been great so far. Thanks and tethering works too....

Right on! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
No advanced power menu. For now my initial goal is to have a plain stock build that'd be good enough for t-mobile to release!
Once Im satisfied with it (probably before) ill start on a modded version. I mostly wanted to try to achieve a build that isn't restricted by the bugs we have in our current leaks. Basically a good, stable base for me, and hopefully other devs, to work from!
That said, if you do modify anything, and care to share it, by all means, please do! I know most people here will appreciate it!

As I'm sure many of you are aware, I'm currently having an issue with my mytouch acquisition. I just want to set the record straight:
A friend of mine bought me a Mytouch4g for extremely cheap (can't give specifics) and sold it do me at cost. While it was in transit, I had a lot of spare time so I picked up one from the T-mobile store for full price. I planned on remorsing (returning) the full price one to T-mobile as soon as I received my cheap one. However, my cheap one was either stolen or never delivered. UPS claims that it was delivered, however, there was no knock on my door. I've decided to release this rom while I return my current mytouch to T-Mobile and get the whole claim with UPS sorted out. I do not wish to accept donations if you are hoping that I will pick another device up. If you wish to donate to me, please do so for the work I have done, not the work that may or may not come in the future. (IE: no strings attached <3)
Anyway, there are still a few issues with the rom that I've been battling with for weeks.
1. The video issue. This affects any type of video playback (camera preview included) What occurs is that there is some issue with buffering the video that I haven't been able to track down but the result is that the frames freeze on the screen.
2. Bluetooth - I honestly haven't spent much (any) time on this issue because I've been working on the video issue
3. FFC force closes when trying to record video - I just need to add an XML so the camera app learns how to interact with the FFC while recording video (easy fix)
As far as I know, those are the only issues. Please use and enjoy the rom, but DO NOT REPORT BUGS. They CyanogenMOD team generally does not release roms that are not fully functional, but due to the circumstances surrounding my device, I felt this was appropriate. Keep in mind, this release is UNOFFICIAL.
All of my current source is either on Gerrit (review.cyanogenmod.com) or merged into the CM tree (www.github.com/cyanogenmod), so feel free to give a helping hand if you can.
Google apps are NOT included in this rom, but can be found at http://goo.gl/kKxxd
Download link: Alpha over. If you want it, build it. Sorry.
Full wipe required if coming from Espresso
I'll get a mirror up shortly

I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet, and yes, I know there's another thread about the "confirmed" Dec update from a top dev but I figured this is worthy of its own thread. Sounds like the update might only be for the GSM versions of the phone, and we might have to wait for our specific Epic Touch update, but things must be close at this point.

Indeed my friend.
Sent from the future.
Carriers hold back updates??? They would never do such thing.
I know some updates the carrier has to purchase from the manufacturer and some are free. I don't quite understand where the dividing line is but having to pay for an update would surely slow down a carrier's intention of pushing an update.
Warning about updates
People:
Operating systems are complicated programs.
Whether it's for a desktop PC or a smartphone
there will ALWAYS be bugs. Some bugs only
appear under circumstances that can't be tested
by the manufacturer or service providers. Some bugs
only appear when combined with other applications.
Just know these FACTS:
Manufacturers and service providers aim to make $$$.
They DO NOT make more $$$ when customers are unhappy
and they must provide additional support and services.
Updates and patches will also have bugs.
Custom ROMs will also have bugs.
EVERY new gadget, car or appliance we buy during our lives
WILL HAVE BUGS !

Amen brotha!
Once the first XDA user who knows what they're doing gets an update, it will be posted here so fast that many will find out about it here, not by getting it via OTA. They push them out over several days so most likely there will be a full stock tar to Odin before many of us get it.

Okay.... the international version also came out first.
The international versions of Samsung devices always get it first.
Samsung has proven time and time again that they are more concerned about the international market than they are the U.S.
It's funny how quickly people forget about history when trying to assign blame.
It's like XDA members live their lives to blame the carriers for everything.
Dammit, it's raining and cold out side, stupid Sprint!
It does make me wonder why AT&Ts Skyrocket just got 2.3.6 pushed to it on 11/22 though, which was released almost 2 months after Sprint's E4GT. Then again, why the Skyrocket and not AT&T's non-LTE GSII? Who knows why these guys do what they do.

We've seen lots of complaining in the last couple of days about what is and isn't working in these ports.
It seems GPS may or may not be working correctly, that it may or may not be due to the Leap Second.
WiFi, Bluetooth, volume... if you have these issues, they can mostly be remedied. If not, gratz.
The fact is, these Roms are ports of development previews on a phone slightly but importantly different than yours running an OS that hasn't been released yet.
I was deeply amazed and impressed that some developers had working ports to CDMA the very night it was announced for GSM.
I'd you are running one of these JB ports and you find that it works well enough as a daily driver, consider yourself fortunate and hit the thanks button on the OP, maybe even donate.
If you are trying it out, but find that it lacks the stability or functionality that you require, click the thanks button on the OP anyway because they spent the time to give you something now for free that which you would otherwise have to wait weeks for, or, considering VZW's track record, maybe never.
This is how I'm looking at it- I'm getting to preview the latest update for free before it officially comes available. Just like those lucky bastards at Google I/O, except how much did they pay per ticket?
Thanks, devs, for doing what you do.

They paid $900 per ticket. But they get $1200 or so free of stuff. So they actually received 300 for going to it if you look at it that way.
Nevertheless I'm very pleased with JB. Everything is working beautiful for me. I using daily driver now without any issues. Just the stock JB at that. I'm not much for all the features of Roms. More into kernel tweaks which I do miss from glados kernel. But Franco is doing fine for now.

Thats why I put going to Google IO one year at least on my bucket list.
i think people are forgetting these roms are from nandroids! lol!
I most definitely appreciate the efforts. I ran the Vicious JB stock port on my VZW Gnex but in the end, I couldn't stick with it because the Verizon framework apps don't work on Jelly Bean yet. This means I couldn't use the My Verizon or NFL Mobile apps, and that's a deal breaker. I understand that you can blame Verizon for requiring the back end framework in order for their branded apps to work, and that's all fine and well, but at the end of the day, I couldn't run them.
Be that as it is, I still appreciate the efforts of those developers to have a working CDMA port the same night. Thanks to all who do what you do. I'm a software developer myself so I know how tedious this crap can be.
Half of the JB "hate" posts are not "my app doesn't work, JB sucks!" but rather "my app doesn't work, I'm posting it in case someone has stumbled upon a fix"
The problem is 80% of the people who own a GN are:
a. Bronies (so they're inherently tools),
b. it's their first Android device (so they're inherently tools).

I most definitely appreciate the efforts. I ran the Vicious JB stock port on my VZW Gnex but in the end, I couldn't stick with it because the Verizon framework apps don't work on Jelly Bean yet. I used My Verizon on JB. You just need to install the VerizonSSO apk in order for it to work...I can upload the file if you need it.

Would you mind? I can find download locations out there but I'm not sure what version's needed.

These aren't "ports" of Jelly Bean roms. They are the real deal made specifically for this chipset and device. And, everything works.
I had to look up bronies as well.... I am sending along my hate alone with jesusice

That sort of depends. There are some changes that have to be made to a ROM for the GSM model to be 'ported' to the CDMA models. So, it's a 'port' for those phones, because only the GSM developer preview was 'released'.
They do realize other top phones are just getting ice cream sandwich, and we Nexii already have Jelly Beans sweet taste in our mouths?? Ridiculous!

One of those lucky ones everything is working just fine, still couldn't see any issues, and I flashed my phone on the 28/06
Funny how ICS was the major update but jb is more of a complete experience.
butter and jelly please...
so this has been a terrible issue with samsung since the galaxy s 1 days... im sick and tired of slow updates.. whats your thoughts on this ? will it change your mind on what phone to get next?

IMO, It really doesn't matter! I have used JB and ICS on my phone, and other than Google Now, I don't see the need to update to JB.
I look at it like this... the standard consumer is not rooted. The OEM and carrier have to smooth out bugs, and make the transition from ICS -> JB a seemless integration. This makes for a better customer experience.
Thats the business man... why release a sub par product and have thousands of support tickets for small minor issues.
From your sig, you're running JB already.
Pretty depressing if you ask me. God if the new nexus phone wasn't being made by LG I'd probably be all over that thing at this point.
It will have 4.2 before we even get 4.1

Telus' S3 will get JB before the end of November, so I'm thinking we should be very close by.
Full application of project butter in an official release of jb will be worth it. Only reason my nexus is still stock is that the only rom on the s3 that comes close to matching its fluidity, for me at least, is tasks aokp. It's night, and day. Slow rollouts of software are just one of those burdens of this era in development. Fortunately, the software is beginning to be more, and more worth it. Someday you'll lecture your grandkids on how we didn't have all this fancy "cognitive request firmware updates, and 5tb/second data speeds" lol

*shrugs* there was an update from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4
I know what you're saying tho... I always look at devs like the CM team who have already put out updates way before the OEM and think... how come a billion dollar company is so slow?
I wish carriers would allow users to do soak tests and **** before release to send bug reports and stuff.

By the time we even get Android 4.1, Android 4.2 will already be out in the market.
First, 4.2 will not be key lime pie.
Second, its not Samsungs fault, its the carriers.
And being the carriers fault - you have to wonder. Do they each only have like 2 people working on the Updates...or wtf. lol

Because when there is a bug in CM, they can go *shrug*, we'll add it to the known issues list, like the bluetooth audio not working right. When there is a bug in a carrier supplied ROM, think of all the people that are going to want to call AT&T and be like 'Hey this isn't working, FIX IT!'. That costs money to pay the customer service people and it costs money from a PR point of view.
The carriers strive to make things as bug free as possible (which, is laughable considering some of the updates some carriers have pushed out, or even the state of a phone at release *cough*G2x*cough*). If they don't do super extensive testing on everything BEFORE the release, they're going to have to do the same testing AFTER the release, but after it costs them money in customer service and PR image.
It sucks that another manufacturer/carrier is delaying the update. Do we buy a phone on the promise/hope we will see the next update? I don't. "Why am I not getting update XX" seems to be a common complaint. I came from the Atrix 2. Motorola promissed ICS and an unlockable bootloader. The phone is now borderline if not already end of life with At&t and is just getting the ICS update and still a locked bootloader. I bought my GSIII with the thought "cool I will get JB" but didn't care when. With all of the leaks available, if you want JB, you can get it. Seeing some of the bugs in the leaks, do you really want that to be your update? If you got the update and had these bugs, thered posts of "how could they release this buggy version?" Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufactures and carriers stand by their word, but I realize there are more important things to worry about than why my update is delayed or not getting it. If you want a phone that guarantees you'll see an update, get a ,cough cough, Iphone. Not all features may work but hey, you'll get your update. My one and a half cents and a THANKS to the hard working devs that bring us these leaks and roms (FOR FREE) to satisfy our need to update. YOU GUYS ROCK!
This phone is awesome straight out of the box. I'm just a flash junkie and I love new shiny stuff. I wonder if there's a support group for flash addicts?
I dont understand why carriers have to tweak the software when samsung already does it. I dont think carriers change the software that much that it takes so long. Someone please enlighten me

Well and doing carrier certification. I think that's more of what ends up taking a long time than updating any carrier add-on software.
Sprint is receiving their OTA to JB starting today. So I'm sure we're not too far behind.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
this sucks but never a problem with custom roms and Samsung is the easiest to update.
I'm new to Android, so maybe that makes me naive. But, I'd like to bring up a few points:
1) How do you know JB for the AT&T GS3 is delayed until 2013? No one has given a release date. Heck, it might be 2014 or 2015. It's misleading to post a title like that.
2) "Coming months:" this ambiguity goes both ways. Sprint released their GS3 JB OTA update today.
3) AT&T is taking long to update their bloatware?! There are three stupid apps: AT&T Hotspots, AT&T Messages, and AT&T Navigator. AND AT&T's already released the Note 2, which comes with Jelly Bean. Thus, these apps have already been updated to work with Jelly Bean!
The holdup on AT&T's part is something else...
I have had emails from Sprint, LG, and LG Open Source.
First, LG said they won't make JB until Sprint request it.
Sprint said they don't know when or if LG will make an update or when they will send it to them.
LG Open Source said that the source for 4.2.2 will come out in March when we get our update. I believe the March part but not the 4.2.
I have been trying just to get us some facts. Anyways, I wouldn't start a new post for rants. So....

That is a copy and paste. I don't have a file.
There has been some frustrated folks here the last few days. I thought the first true bonafide piece of info that has the Sprint Optimus G and Jelly Bean in the same sentence might make your day.
Thanks to a post from Warlord722 we have found out LG uses letters for the software version after they exhaust the numbers on Sprint. Thanks. Look forward to "B" in the near future.

I work near the campus and talked to someone close to the project 2 weeks ago. They said the update was in final testing and should see release in march. I'd say its almost definitley 4.1 for now. It does seem like it got delayed from release this month though so i GUESS there is the small possibility they did that to make it 4.2 but thats doubtful. Either way Sprints had it for a while and the 4.1 update is basically done.

I used to have a Sprint LG Optimus S (LS670). Their updates were labeled in same way as the LGOG i.e. LS670ZV? . Once they got past LS670ZV9 it went to lettering i.e. LS670ZVC, LS670ZVD. When it upgraded to Gingerbread it was LS670ZVH, which was borked and had to rerelease as LS670ZVJ.

Yeah I remember that too. The update to the S were really insignificant until ZVH but really buggy. I stayed with ZVD and ran ICS on it.

Awww damn he did such a great job with the port for ICS. I gotta check this out.
Yes, I have ICS on mine too, running OXYGEN 3.0 that was ported over to it by thekraven, runs damn good too for what the OptiS is! My daughter uses it as wifi only device, and she has still has lots of fun with it.
My brother is currently using my S and still runs good. I have the extended battery on it that it last for 2+ days.
I think I will never sell that little phone.
Hopefully the ZVA will bring 4.1 God I really can't wait!!!

I legitimately had a dream last night that we were able to pull the update from an LG server somewhere and give everyone JB.
I clearly care about this way too much. Hahaha
Listen, I'll take 4.2 but I want to have battery life better than note 2. Battery life for 2-3 days with heavy use would be amazing.
You better find a nice battery case for that 2500mah minimum
