just rooted need help/advice

So i just did the 3 step root and im at the clockwork mod recovery screen
There is different stuff to choose and i have no clue what to select?
Can someone please direct me to what to do next this is my first android phone and i have no idea how to load a rom or what i should be doing next

Well are you hoping to flash a custom ROM? If so, you'll need to download the ROM and copy it to the root of your SD card. Then when you boot to recovery, choose the options to wipe data, wipe cache, and then install a zip from SD. If you want to back up your phone, choose the Nandroid option.
You got pretty far without knowing how to complete your journey.

so if i click nandroid that will back up what my phone is set at now?
what is a good custom rom to use ?
I would like to have wifi tether but do not have 4g and probly wouldnt use it very often, i read something that there was a stock rooted rom? I also do not want to lose my camera?

Then just read up on the dev pages/threads for the popular ROMs. I use Fresh 1.0.1 with the netarchy 3.7.3c Fresh-compatible kernel (haven't switched to the new one that just came out today). Camera works great, wifi tether app is built-in. If you want that, download both (just search here), put them on your SD card, reboot to recovery, and flash the ROM, then the kernel. You don't have to flash a new kernel or even radio if you don't want to, but everything is installed the same. Usually reading a couple of pages for each ROM will tell you if there are an problems. Other options are the stock rooted ROM, DamageControl, Baked snack, or there are a couple of new ones for Froyo as well, but they have some features left out (like 4G, wifi, MMS . . . depends on the ROM).
Nandroid (or, inside Android, ROM Manager) will make a system image for you, saving everything exactly as it is. To restore, boot to recovery and choose the correct options for that. Should be pretty self-explanatory.
Always wipe data and cache before flashing, and it's a good idea to search Google for Cyanogen's recommendations for recalibrating your battery (it's on his wiki). Just don't flash a stock, non-rooted ROM or any OTA updates that Sprint tries to push on you. Always get something that the devs here say is safe for rooted phones.

[Q] Stuck in bootloop

What happened: Samsung Galaxy S2 tmobile SGH-T989 (more info at the bottom)
Ok so I installed the usb drivers through kies and got the latest firmware from kies. Installed Odin 3.07. Backed up my stuff. Flashed recovery-cmw-hercules using Odin. Then I rooted my phone using tmobilegalaxys2rootICS (flashing with CWM recovery) and installed CWM-SuperSU v0.87. Updated root and CWM on the next boot using SuperSU app and Rom Manager to the current version (non touch for CWM). I then got cyanogenmod9.1.0-hercules (stable) and gapps-ics-20120317-signed. I wiped the internal SD card and external SD card. Went into recovery manager. Did a factory reset, cache wipe, dalvik wipe, battery stat wipe. Flashed cyanogen9, flashed gapps, fixed permissions and rebooted. Now i'm stuck in a bootloop just looking at the start up screen of cyanogenmod. I have access to the recovery menu and the odin screen so i'm not bricked as far as i know, just bootloop'd. I read somewhere of a super wipe by JDT or someone along those lines but i can't find those scrips to flash them. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hey! As of I know, you are not using a TOUCH recovery. Sad to say but a lot of ROMs will only work on TOUCH recovery, because they changed something in the Cache wiping that ain't screwing up with device or something (as I understood digging up a little bit).
Here is my advice, go with this for now:
MIRROR
It's v13.1 of Sk8er's recovery. Though I want to tell you, if you try to hardboot into it (what I mean is: hold +/- volume and plug in USB) it probably won't work since it doesn't work for me for a weird reason (I'm on v13.0 so I couldn't say for v13.1).
In EXTRAS you got the cache.wipe and the super.wipe of TDJ.
And another thing I think you should know about this device is HOW TO FLASH CORRECTLY.
Here is the way:
Make a backup (optional)
SUPER WIPE (using TDJ tools)
Factory Reset (wipes data/cache/.....)
Install your rom (without GApps)
Reboot phone.
Wait for let's say 10 minutes (optional as well I don't do it but it's recommended... Just reboot, and when you see no bootloop, go back to recovery for next)
Wipe cache/dalvik (without using TDJ but only from recovery touch)
Install gapps.
Reboot.
if you just update your rom, like going from a nightly to another nightly, no need to follow this. Just wipe cache and dalvik using recovery touch, and you are good going.

Thanks switchfoot! I'll try this today. I'll grab the cache wipe and super wipe as well as upgrade to touch-cwm however i'm a little worried when you say skaters mod made you unable to hard boot, seems risky as that's your last resort if you brick the device (as far as i know). Thank you so much for the steps on flashing, I read so many different ways I was very confused on the proper procedure. I have class today so I probably won't report back till later today but i'll let you know what happens!

My friend here is a flawless recovery with 0 issues if you are worried about the one above TWRP 2.2. Also stay on one site for everything and may I suggest xda only. Do not venture off not that the other sites are issues just that you will confuse yourself although rootzwiki is just as good.
There is plenty of How To's here in xda that you do not need to be confused, confusion comes when you start asking others there opinions and take bits and pieces from all of them... Good luck and feel free to pm me if you need any further help... Just please read up before you do anything

Installing
How to INSTALL from another ROM (DO NOT SKIP ANY STEPS!):
Be sure to back up your current ROM!
Update your radio to the above recommended version if you have not already done so. (See the list below)
Wipe data/factory reset.
Format /system (mounts and storage->format /system).
Install the CM9 zip from SD card.
Install the gapps zip from SD card.
ONLY IF YOU ARE ON NON-TOUCH CWM RECOVERY: Install darkside-wipe-cache-only.zip (which fixes bootloop due to bad /cache format)
ONLY IF YOU ARE ON TOUCH CWM RECOVERY: Format /cache (mounts and storage->format /cache)
Reboot. Let it sit for a few minutes after the first boot. Be patient.\

Wow that's exactly what i was looking for! Thank you! I just flashed a stock rom to go back to the start. I'll begin the process over again following these steps. The only issue is that the radio update section in the guild no longer exists. Is it ok to go on without the radio update? Or will this cause issues? If so is there a mirror for them?

OK! I'm all set now. I had to use the full wipe as well as the cache wipe after install and the bootloop was resolved. The bigger headache was when kies failed at updating the firmware so i had to do an emergency firmware flash. Any way i have clockwork, root with SuperSU, cyanogenmod9.1.0, and the latest google apps! Plus its backed up now! YAY! Now i just have to configure it to how i like and we'll be in business! Thanks for all your help guys! I really appericate it!

Last thing
I still need the radio update since the file no longer exists in your link. Everything is good but I don't have any wifi calling or features of that order. Which are important in keeping my usages down and getting coverage in my house and otherwise bad areas. Where do I get this and would I just install it via CWM? Thanks again!

Hey guys, I was playing around on my phone, and I downloaded something off of 4shared (just a game) and it crashed and made my phone freeze. I then held my power button and waited for it to boot but now im stuck in a bootloop with the stock telus rom... is there anything I can do that wont wipe everything on my phone? Oh and I can get into both CWM recovery and download mode.
I gave it some more time to startup and it pretty much factory reseted my phone. I get that thing to setup my phone after startup. Everytime I turn my phone off it goes back to this screen and my phone restarts. If I surf through the files of my phone, it shows I still have everything but It doesnt show any of my apps or anything.

I have one S3 that's stock and another that's rooted, so I decided to try CM9 first on rooted S3 because CM10 didn't seem quite ready for daily use. Flashed ROM and Gapps, and things were fine until wi-fi ceased functioning. Worked, then didn't ever again. Nothing I found in searching this helped. And I couldn't get to PlayStore because there was no connection. Tried many things to reset wi-fi, but despite excellent signal, the phone wasn't connected to Internet. I reflashed CM9 (same most current release) but it didn't help.
So, having not actually done anything other than adding ROM Manager, I decided to flash latest CM10 nightly with CWM recovery via ROM Manager. Everything was fine, except of course I forgot I needed to install newer Gapps. However, when I went to do so, ROM Manager was no longer there and manually trying to get recovery only resulted in download mode, which meant I couldn't install Gapps or do much of anything.
I spent time trying to figure out how to get recovery, but having run out of options, I thought it perhaps best to flash back to stock using desktop Odin. I have the MD5 for 4.1.1 LK3. So I did this, but now once past the Samsung and AT&T animations, the phone stops with a Samsung logo. And that's where I'm at.
I know I've seen threads on fixing this, but I can't find them and I would like rectify the softbrick circumstance. What to do.

Did you remember to factory reset (wipe /data) when flashing the stock ROM? That's the most common cause of soft-bricking in this scenario.
If not, boot into recovery (Vol Up + Home + Power) and do so, then try booting the phone again.

Do I do factory reset from desktop Odin in download mode?

That's one possibility, but if you don't want to go through the Odin process again, you can just do the reset from recovery as I outlined above.

Ah...volume UP. But wipe data/factory reset didn't help. If I select update from external storage, would that be MD5 or...?

Stuck on "starting apps" after OTA. I was on a rooted stock rom.

Hey guys I need help. Anyone have a link to the latest rooted stock rom? How is cynogenmod these days? Is it worth making the switch? Whats the most popular rom these days?

Freeza always has the latest stock rooted ROM over in this thread. It's always updated shortly after each OTA is dropped (currently at MB1).
You can see my setup in my sig. I like it a lot!
CM10.1 nightlies are good, and a lot of the AOSP (4.2.2) ROMs are really stable. There are a lot of reasons to stay with TW ROMs and a lot of reasons to move over to AOSP, AOKP, and other ROMs (MIUI, etc). My recommendation would be to update your recovery to the latest (see my sig for the link to the latest TWRP, search for the latest CWM) and just flash away. As long as you stick to Sprint ROMs and nandroid up whenever you can, it's getting difficult to brick your phone.

First off, you're going to need to have a custom recovery, if you don't already have one (most people do after they originally flash their phone). There are many guides to do this, just follow one of qbking77's great tutorials. I'd recommend using TWRP, but the latest CWM works well also.
Now that you have a custom recovery, you can try the following and it might get you out of the bootloop:
In the custom recovery, clear (wipe) both cache and dalvik cache. Then reboot the phone (reboot menu -> system).
If the above doesn't work to get you through the bootloop, try the instructions below:
Now that you have a custom recovery, you need to get the files onto your phone. Since you cannot turn your phone on to download it or connect through USB, you'll have to do it through recovery. Since I use TWRP, I'll walk you through the menu's for that (CWM should be similar).
Connect USB cable to computer -> Mount Menu -> Mount USB Storage.
Now your computer should see a "removable disk" with the contents of your SD Card on it. Now you can copy the ROM you downloaded over to the SD Card.
Now that the file is actually on the phone, you can flash the ROM zip in recovery. Whenever you do this, it's best to do what is called a "full wipe" in the recovery. You'll lose all your apps, settings, etc but it's much better than having a paperweight. In TWRP, what I always do is the following:
1) Nandroid backup: I normally name it something along the lines of "2013-03-14 - ROM NAME - ROM VERSION." This way, when I look through my backups, I can easily see what I was running (what I'm restoring when I want to restore).
2) Wipe Menu - Factory Reset. This will wipe all custom data off of the phone. For me, this is a must before flashing any new ROM. Other people will "dirty flash" Roms on top of each other. For me, that's a recipe for disaster, as any leftover settings/code will inevitably interfere with the new ROM and will mess things up.
3) Wipe Menu - Dalvik Cache and Cache: If I recall correctly, the Factory Reset does both of these, but it doesn't hurt to do it again.
4) Install: This is where you find the ROM zip file you downloaded and install it. Should take less than a minute, but some larger ROMs could take a little longer (not 10 minutes, though).
3) Wipe Menu - Dalvik Cache and Cache: Again, not technically required, but I tend to wipe the cache and dalvik cache very often.
3) Reboot Menu - System: Pretty self-explanatory, but it'll reboot your phone and you can set it up all over again.
In the future, it's best to have Titanium Backup to back up apps and data (For me it's worth the cost to upgrade to Pro). I have mine set up to backup all data every night at 3 am, with a maximum of 5 backups per app. This gives me almost a week of backups that I can restore for every app I have installed. The only thing to keep in mind with TiB is that you can backup/restore system apps that won't work with a new ROM. For example, if I backed up the Samsung Connection Optimizer on the stock rooted ROM and tried to restore it to LiquidSmooth (a 4.2.2 AOSP ROM), it wouldn't work. In fact, it could mess things up on my new ROM. So you might want to pick and choose system apps (RED items) carefully when you're restoring. Next time you want to try out a new ROM (or if you need to restore again because of a bootloop), you can just restore your apps/settings through TiB and not go through 2 hours of setting up all your settings again (for me I like that I can restore all the wifi access spots settings... saves me from explaining why I need my friend's WEP key for the fifth time this month).
Anyways, this post has turned into a novel. Please let me know if you have any more questions (and CNexus or anyone else can correct anything that's wrong)

I got it going by wiping cache and data. I should've tried with just cache wiped. Its annoying to have to redo everything but better than a brick.

Now for some reason my wifi wont turn on. Reflashed again now I'm good to go.

[Q] Beginner trying to root/flash new ROM on T989!

Hi all, found my old SGH-T989 and I want to turn this phone into my play phone.
I am new to rooting and all and I don't know which versions of what to use. Everytime I mess up, I have to restore the phone back to stock 2.3.6 then upgrade to 4.1.2 via Kies, then try to root and such.
Problem is... I don't know which ROMs, gapps to use and which cwm to use!!! Seems like every guide out there is outdated because I get stuck in a bootloop every single time I try to flash a ROM or I get Error 7...
Any tips?
I just want 4.4.2 at least on my SGH-T989 What are my options? What are your suggestions?

You need to be on 4.1.2 for this to work. I am bit responsible for what happens. You can get 4.1.2 for Odin from samfirmware.com. Download the latest TWRP from here: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/hercules/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.0-hercules.tar and flash it in Odin. Your phone should reboot. Boot into recovery by powering off your phone and then holding power and the two volume buttons until you hear two vibrations and then hold just the volume buttons until you see a black screen. Release all buttons. Flash @Chainfire's SuperSU in recovery ( http://download.chainfire.eu/452/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip) Wipe cache ald Dalvik and reboot. You should be rooted and able to flash any KitKat ROM. AOSPA is a good choice. It is pretty stable.

I just flashed CarbonROM on my sister's phone this weekend. Rooting is not really required.
My process:
Flash TWRP (this was the most difficult of the entire process. It is still relatively easy though). I used Odin to flash the latest TWRP. TWRP provides odin flashable archives so it is really just a matter of knowing how to flash thing using Odin. This does not require root. The CWM wiki page says that Rooting is not required, nor is it the preferred method when flashing a new rom.
You can use Heimdall, but it is very hit and miss with this phone. Odin is much more "reliable" on the T989. I tried Heimdall, but I ended up having to reset my sister's phone because it flashed the recovery incorrectly.
Download the rom of your choice and its associated gapps package. Put them on your sd card
Boot into recovery. You will need to use TWRP's mechanisms to wipe/factory reset the phone. Then wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Install the zip of the rom and then immediately afterward install the gapps package. I usually wipe the cache and dalvik cache again for good measure at this point, but I understand it is not needed.
Reboot the phone. If all went well, it will take awhile to boot, but you will be sitting at the start screen of a brand new shiny rom.
Set it up and start using it. Most roms already come rooted.
The reason rooting isn't required using this method is because the download mode of the T989 essentially gives you root priviledges.
I've used this process on two T989 phones without any error. If you want to backup your phone, do that in step 3 _before_ you wipe/factory reset your phone.

Usually what I do is just use Odin to flash ClockworkMod then copy the ROMS to the sdcard. Boot into recovery then install zip from SD Card, select ROM. If you use CyanogenMod then just select your device and Google search the cyanogenmod gapps
