Nandroid Backup Error... Need help.... - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I am currently using ClockWorkMod Recovery 6.0.1.2. The last few times I have tried to backup a ROM, I get : Error finding an appropriate backup handler. This happens at the end of the backup after it looks like everything is okay. Does anybody know what this means and how it can be corrected? I don't like flashing new ROM's without doing a Nandroid Backup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.... Thank you!

Does this help? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908178

I tried the instructions in the link you sent, but I still get the same results... Not sure what to do.

Try Twrp recovery?

I should... I feel like I'm betraying CWM if I go to the other side. Is it the shizzle?

You need to take that avatar down and put one up of Jesse "shizzle" would never come out of Heisenberg's mouth. But yes it is better imo and lots of others. Has a better track record with this phone as well. Install it through goomanager from the play store.

I agree about TWRP. Boyh are great in their own right, but I prefer TWRP by a longshot! Even has a built in file manager!
Don't worry, we were all nervous our first times!!
Seriously though, only took a few min and I was hooked!
On your problem, does cwm see both int and ext sdcards?
If it comes to it, connect to pc over usb and adb pull both /system and /data. Also internal sd.
At least you'll have some sort of backup and then id suggest odin flashing stock firmware.
Good luck!

Nandroid Restore Loses Root Write Permissions

Hello,
Noob here. I've run into this issue with my Nandroid restores where I suddenly lose write permissions. I can still read, but if I try to write anything to the root, I get a insufficient permissions error.
Using CWM 5.0.2.6
SuperSU v.0.87
Clean Stock ICS from KIES
Odin 1.85 Flash CWM
Backup
Root w/ SuperSU v.0.87
Success.
Spend hours upon hours making it perfect V1
Backup Perfect V1
Spend hours upon hours perfecting perfection...
Which leads to imperfection(Deleted necessary System File)
Restore Perfect V1
Write access lost.
Is there a way I can regain the root somehow without a clean install?
Thank you in Advance.
I believe this is a known issue when restoring nandroid back ups. Your only recourse is to reflash the rom and start over.

I just posted this yesterday...use touch recovery and it will work...i went through a lot trying to get this to work yesterday...i thought it was the device management doing it..so after i restored before booting i pulled my Sim and then booted phone froze dm then rebooted with Sim...but once you notice no rw it's to later and you have to start from the backup again...I've used both touch recoveries and they work fine...but cwm 2.6 and 2.7 don't work they also cause my phone to hang when turning off....but this will only work if the backup is right to begin with...

Man, as much as I hate to say this but better you than me.
I would like to say thank you!! I was on 5.2.7 CWM, and I was having this issue, when I updated to 6.x.x and did a restore, I have all of my permissions back, THANK YOU!

Restoring back to nandroid.

I'm on cyanogenmod 10 beta 3 and wanted to go back to AOKP Milestone 6 but I'm having problems with superuser (and therefore cant use mobile odin) so I was wondering if I could just restore my nandroid back to EL26 via the JB recovery mode and then flash the aokp ROM through that recovery like normal? Or would that not work/brick my phone?

Safe bet as I had the same issue: use sfhub one click to go back to el29 w root, then one click root to el26 cwm access and then you're good to go. Just make sure whatever road u take it leads you to el26 cwm by chris41g.

Hey, quick question.I'm just trying to do some reading about safety and such, and came across your post. Wouldn't it be safe to JUST Odin EL26 CWM alone? Without going back to EL29 first? Is that necessary? Again, not being a smartass and trying to call you out, I'm just really trying to get a hold on what is safe, or not, and procedures.

Well the main issue is it seems he lost root access....just saying its safest to start fresh. Only takes 10 extra minutes. If he had root he would've been able to just mobile Odin el26 like he stated, but its not an option.

Exactly. That's the problem I'm having, which is why I'm asking if (since i dont have a pc to use) It would be smart and safe to just restore my nandroid (which is el26 with root and cwm) from the JB recovery (cwm6) and then just flash my original ROM through el26 cwm.
Anyone think this is safe?

It sounds safe, both are quoted as being safe recoveries. I even restored a nand from a broken phone onto my replacement one yesterday so I'm sure what you're doing is far less risky. Its the wiping in non-safe recoveries that caused bricks, you should be OK as long as you don't do something stupid like pull the battery during the restore.

Someone else told me that even while restoring a nandroid backup, it still wipes data, so if you're on an unsafe kernel, it still can brick. Just so everyone knows, I was on a safe kernel when I bricked mine. Apparently there was a mis-merge that happened that caused the safe kernel to be unsafe for a few days. I was very unlucky, but its one of the risks we all take when doing this. I'm planning on odin-ing el26 kernel whenever I need recovery from here on out!

Backups were glitchy for me on cwm. I switched to TWRP and there's no looking back for me.
Im going to try twrp and see how it works. Thanks
I'm on cwm and backups have been fine. Why don't you redownload cwm and make sure you rwflash your appropriate recovery. I've NEVER had problems with cwm unless I messed with the folder or something.

Nothing against twrp but what's the point of troubleshooting if you're not going g to troubleshoot? If someone really likes a particular recovery why not help them get it working instead of making the decision for them?

Note isn't restoring from backup

I had to go to stock via odin because my backups weren't working(they always have before) after I flashed PACman rom and didn't like it. Once I got back to stock I tried restoring from my backups again and they don't get an error or anything but after I restart the phone is still completely clean without any of my data restored on to it. What do? Thanks
Edit: When it gets to restoring data it says .android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure.
Sounds like a corrupt backup, you may be SOL. I could be wrong though and someone else will chime in. Good luck.

TW rom issue!

Hi everytime I flash an tw rom on first boot everything works perfectly but as soon as I reboot I get this error phone.android.com has stopped and it keeps doing it so force closing each 15 seconds..
I tried to reflash whit a full wipe various times different tw roms but it still happens??
Also while im at it dont feel like opening another thread I have cwm6 touch the latest and during a nandroid backup it says backup of /data has failed some sort of error ....
I really want to go back to tw tired of aosp any ideas?

Wipe everything and odin flash the root66 firmware. Start over from full stock rooted, but clean.
Run your nandroid again and write down the error. (Save log to sd).
Seems to me there is some corrupted data getting left behind. I'd format the external sd as well. But at least backup and delete the Android folder. (Contains 2 folders inside, data and obb). You can rename to Android-bak if you prefer. Do this before wiping and flashing root66.

The data error I had too, but on twrp and it's a known thing all over recovery threads for a while now. The error thing happened to me a while back but a root66 fixed that, you should also get the other bug fixed with in the same process.

Mobile Odin isn't hard to use at all. I highly recommend using it in place of cwm and twrp, except for when a nandroid is needed.

There's no reason at all to be nervous about trying a different recovery. Thousands of people have been using it w/o issue. Personally I think they are both really good, I just prefer twrp. Give it a shot, if you don't like it, install cwm.
It shouldn't do anything at all to your current rom. Recovery is on a completely different partition. And you can install w/o flashing. Use goo manager for twrp or rom manager for cwm.
