Take a seat, relax and search. No one knows what apps you need, the games you like and what rom is best for you. Read threads, install, flash, reflash, experiment and have fun.

Well first off welcome to the Android Community. You've definetely started in the right place with XDA. Rooting an android phone and getting a custom ROM is easier than ever now. I would suggest first scrolling to the top of this forum and doing a lot of research and self education. There are several things you need to have a basic understanding of before flashing roms. Look at the most wanted topics thread, The official Jelly Bean General Discussion thread, Terminology for the newbies. Check out this post as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873873
In the end consider that Jelly Bean is still in the developmental stages and there can be bugs and workarounds to deal with. If you are new to Android, going with a solid custom ICS rom may be best for you so as not to spoil your Android experience.
Finally once you have made your decision head over to the Android rom development section ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1332 ) and look through the roms and choose the best one for your needs. Read the instructions and then read them again. Install exactly according to the directions in the thread from the rom you choose and enjoy ! Hope this helps a little at least. Happy Flashing ! :highfive:
The best thing to do is read, read, read. Knowledge is the best way to prevent accidents. The process for loading custom ROMs on this phone is simple but you'd be surprised how many "educated" people screw it up. Good luck.

I would reccomend Jedi mind trick or a darkside ics rom to flash first....very stable and very good battery life....also check out the sticky threads

And also if you need visual tutorials, just search on youtube and there's a bunch of videos showing yoi how to root, flash roms, etc. Always make sure what you are flashing is for this phone

I'll tell you a great ics rom which is called paranoid android. There is one by starskyrob in the development section. As far as JB in my opinion, the most stable is Paranoid android JB. I've flashed their latest rom and have had no sleeps of death or random reboots. This is going over 24 hours now and I did get 21 hours of battery for my first battery cycle. If you want more info send me a pm and ill link you some links. But yes read and watch a lot of youtube videos together ideas of what roms can do.

My 2 cents is that JB ROMs are not yet ready to act as daily drivers on the T989 for most of us.
The RRs and SODs continue as well as several other quirks.
I've been on and off the leading JB ROMs since mid-August and in most all cases I lost more features than I gained.
Thank God for the developers and early adopters who brave the bleeding edge for us all.
But I will wait in the safety of AOKP MS6 until I see something from Whitehawakx that's labeled "milestone" before I flash again.

All the ones I have tried so far I've had issues with, I would suggest something more stable like an ics for now. The JB roms look nice but they have issues with calls, random lockups and such.

touchwiz rom rooted with no bloat

hi all
i have SPH-L710 (sprint official rom LJ7) but im rooted and have cwm installed.
i know there are a few stock rooted roms floating around but im still not sure what the ones are with the most support, stable and well pretty much works just like the official less the bloat.
i would like to be running jb 4.2.1 (but this is no a requirement if it means something breaking)
i would like to be able to overclock the cpu (if its safe and people have had success with it)
i would definately like to get rid of the sprint apps and even alot of the samsung apps (most of them) but i think i want to keep the stock dialpad and that might be part of samsung rom.
any input would be great (even if it just naming the roms so i can do further research) but i would like to hear from people who have actually tried these roms as you would know if things are broken or quirks or whatever.
thanks

Even if your ROM isn't bloat-free, you can still manually remove the apps via titanium backup, go here

not trying to start a flame war at all
its just that there is so many roms (even with touchwiz only) and that means tons of pages for each one from the beginning of dev to current so i always read the last 5 pages or so of each rom and that gives me an idea.
bascially looking for the names and stability of each rom and whats broke.
the 4.1.1 is ok with me too but would be nice for 4.2.1 but stability is more important

you could do that. also, before flashing the .zip just delete the apps you don't want from the system/app folder - i do this on 100% of the roms i flash. the link above is a great starting point, it's best to freeze apps and see what the effect is using titanium backup, then you can gauge which apps you know you wanna remove from the system/app folder before you flash future roms...

[Q] Best fully functional stock like ROM for Note 2?

Hi folks. I just got my note 2 and I really hate Touchwiz so I was thinking of installing a ROM on the device. I was wondering what I would be losing, what I would be gaining and if it's possible to get the phone back to stock ROM after doing so. Looking for most stock like ROM available that is fully functional. I want to make sure that everything works after flashing. Any help and answers to these questions appreciate.

Any ROM marked TW will be the closest to stock and all are the best for those that use them.
Best thing for you is to simply make a backup, flash, try, no like, flash another.
"Best" threads are always closed on XDA as they are too subjective and no one knows exactly what you like.

My Dads nexus 7

First. I hate doing this. I know there is no one best ROM for everyone. But I need a quick answers for tmr morning. But its not a open question. I am looking for a couple things
My 60yo dad wants me to root and put a new ROM on his device
1. Must be stable
2 perform at least as well as stock ROM. No beta or buggy roms
3. Does not need crazy options to customize.
4. Aosp browser, he needs flash for his stoner pot websites.
Have to have all of those
* cm looks like a contender because its over air updatable.
Anyways. You guys are smart and my dad is a bit of a technophobe. So keep that in mind, i have first gen n7 so I know nothing about this device.
Thank you for your charity an opinions!
He won't care about kernels or root apps. We just need to future proof it now and get flash working.
Thank you thank you thank you, please don't flame me. I know that everyone will have a different opinion on best ROM. But this is not a general best ROM question. Need an old man ROM.

try out Minimus http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388599
and use the gapps from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942
with this rom
very stable and no bells and whistles like roms with many addons
I would simply flash a Stock based ROM, custom kernel and remove some Bloatware, install an Adblocker I guess your Dad wouldn´t spend his time with some benchmarks ? I use a customized Stock based ROM myself and don´t miss any features since I use my tablet more productive :cyclops:

[Q] Recommended ROM(s) for wifi thethering on the Xperia ARC

As the title asks, I would like to know this!?. Seems all the 4.2.2 & 4.3.x I've tried are iffy at best! Using BeanStalk atm which isn't perfect but works better at WiFi tethering than any other JB ROM I've tried flashing so far!!!
I await your responses!..
I use SJB 7 by harsh586 and wifi tethering works for me.
Here is my answer:

If JB is not up to your standard, I suggest you switch to ICS or GB.

I have been doing that for the last six months and none of these ROMs can hold a WiFi tether signal for very long, they all seem to need to be looked after every few minutes by turning the function off then on or rebooting!..

There's your solution - There is no such ROM at the moment. Life's not perfect, deal with it. You have to give up some features to get other features.
There isn't any best rom actually as most roms are different and made for different kind of users. Some users want a feature packed rom, some want a clean and minimalistic one and some just want a rom that works.
To select the best rom you have to try some different ones, and find one that you like, I would suggest you to start with CM10.1 or CM10.2 by Mike and if you don't like it you can try some others.
Hope that my answers helped you and hope that you find a rom which you might like!
I'd recommend starting from the very beginning. Flash stock ICS .587, if WiFi Tether doesn't work properly there.. then you might have a bigger problem there bro.

Arc got bricked but revived it somehow and how, I don't know however the baseband got corrupted or something which now cannot accept firmware updates via flashtool, so I'm stuck on 8x55A-AAABOAZM-203028D-64 baseband version!..
Also some ROMs will only work without gapps flashed, very few ROMs will work properly with gapps flashed, Slim Bean android 4.2.2 seems to work but terrible with WiFi tether though!..
When I flash with a particular ROM a dozen times to get it to work then to find out the WiFi tether is crap or not working, it can get very very tiresome!..
I might just have to go back to GB and lose out on the JB drop down menu features I've come to enjoy using... :'(
