[Q] Ads between posts - About xda-developers.com

Do established users ever get an option to remove the ads that are placed in between posts on the forms? It's very tiring to read:
post
ad
post
ad
post
ad
etc.
Thanks!
(fwiw, I don't care to much about the header/footer ads on the whole page, just the ones that weenie themselves in between posts)

Hmm ... you see ads between the posts even after you logged/signed in?
I don't see the ads in FireFox ... but I have installed AdBlock Plus plug-in. Maybe that prevents the ads?!
EDIT:
And in xda app there are also no ads between the posts.

I forgot if Senior Members and below face this problem
Unregistered users do have ads between posts
All recognized members have no ads
Controversies,controversies everywhere :what:

Yup, see attachment

We hear ya. These ads are a way to keep the servers running.
There are two main things I would recommend:
1. Install AdBlock to remove them, or
2. Contribute to the community enough to become a recognized contributor/developer, at which point you can turn them off.

So do the ads like that show up for Senior Members aswell then? Because even though I mostly use the xda app, whenever I went onto web view, I never noticed anything like it

yup.. It happens.. Not always though.. But i have seen it some times.. and that doesnt goes away with the ad blocker.. as i am using it and still it appears.. as it seems it acts as a post in a thread.. ad blocker doesnt recognises it i guess..

I use Ghostery in Opera so I have never seen a ad in xda.

Marketplace

I don't get it.
If I use the Android XDA app, the Marketplace is visible in General. Using a real browser however, it's not. A quick search for a link into the Marketplace rears a permissions error. And all of this without being registered. So what gives? Something I'm missing here?

Oh, so it's now visible. After glancing through the rules/disclaimer it appears it'll become accessible after 8 posts for a noobjuice member. Clever.

You need more posts and/or a longer membership (I can't recall the details).
Guess the Tapatalk app needs fixing .

It's not the app...we've changed the permission on the Marketplace to not allow access to a user until he/she has made 8 posts. That 8 post level is also the same point at which you can post links. It's just an anti-spam measure. We found people were registering at XDA just to spam the site or the Marketplace. This helps.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
This is good to know. Long time lurker and finally signed up so I could post in the marketplace but alas!
Can someone link to the rules for gaining access to the Marketplace? I have 8 posts but still cannot see it. Tried logging out and back in but still nothing
For a while there I thought I needed to check my eye sight. Makes sense now.
Hard to achieve 8 post if you have nothing to say or to discuss or if everything is so well explained that you do not need answers
Maybe you could add a waiting time also. Lets say after 4 weeks you get to see the market, I highly doubt anyone would wait 4 weeks just to spam something.
It doesn't make sense that you can view the Marketplace before you sign up (and then have it dissapear after you are a member).
oh!! so thats why i couldnt c the marketplace
I am new here. it seem that this is an useful forum.
welcome to forums
Once you become an active/regula user all XDA features will be unlocked and you will be able to post in marketplace, this rule is to protect us from spammers/scammers
Ah I was wondering why I wasn't able to see that deal I saw anymore... guess I'm off to ask more questions.
I have been on the site reading for 6 months now trying not to poste but now i need to use the market so here is my 8th poste thanks.

Who else has family dollar adds come up that block the whole effin screen to where you can't see $hit?? And I have yet to find a way to exit them! You have to hit 'refresh' and then 5 hyper link clicks later, you get it again! This is real BS.

If there is one spicific ad causing users a major problem in viewing the site then the admins MIGHT consider removing that particular ad, however the ads are what pay the server costs so.......
Sent from my fingers to your face...
If you are seeing full-screen ads, or any kind of pop-up or overlay, please post a screenshot, as they WILL be removed.
that was really annoying to me too, and I was really surprise that this site would have a pop up ad like that. Then I realize that if the cursor passes over the ad then it will open. You don't have to click on it for it to open, so I don't know if that would be consider a pop up ad.
Like he said the ads are there to pay for the server, but this particular family dollar ad takes it to a different level.
don't navigate the mouse over the ad or else it will open and take up most of the screen. To me that is close to being malicious

Are you guys logged in when this happens? My settings are such that I log in automatically and I don't get any ads except banner ads that take up only a small part of the screen.
As Pulser said, please send me a screenshot of any pop-up ad you see here. We hate them, and sometimes they slip through the cracks. Thanks for your help.

You want your browser "light", yet are willing to put up with ads that eat up your bandwidth and can even redirect you to potential security threats?
Yeah, sounds like you've got everything under control. But do please whine some more for us, because everyone automatically respects complaints by someone who gives lame (and probably pure BS) excuses to dismiss the most logical solution to your problems.

actually the most logical answer would be to take the offending ads down. ads dont bother me in general and i understand that sites make their $ by serving up ads, so the question is why would u block the very ads that allow this forum 2 exist??
and its not whining, its a pop up ad. its annoying.
it isnt a BS excuse btw. i dont have adblock because i dont want to have it. i dont need to explain or justify myself to you. if the mods agree with me that it is an annoyance we shouldnt have to deal with they will take it down. if they deem it ok, i will still rock out w/ xda as it is a valuable source of info, i will just try harder to not mouse over anything accidentally.
i imagine the ad will eat up my fios bandwith and cripple my internet connection. this isnt 200 w/ 56k anymore man. i run a quadcore w 4gb of ram and have a fiber line to my house. i have this PLENTY under control. its just a lil minor thing. how about you mind your business and move along, keep your criticism to yourself...
the offending ads only maximize when "rolled-over" and as said have a X button in top right of all those type of ads.
however today i installed "ad blocker plus" on firefox and its counterpart "easylist" for IE9 (known as tracking protection lists, in ie add-ons ).
no ads anywhere, in either web browser!

Remove Video Adverts Please

I do not mind seeing adverts, however the Video Adverts on XDA automatically unmute themselves when the next advert loads and they load at the bottom of the page meaning I have to scroll all the way down to stop them.
Then there is the issue of video adverts and low bandwidth and low capped connections.
Just please go back to banner adverts

Well, that makes sense then. I misread pulser_g2's post.
My bad..
2 more..
found 2 more adds with sound..
First one is for "Gaviscon" and the second is like a music video-clip??
Isn't there a way to skip adds with sound in general? It scares the creaps out of me when sound goes on unexpected in the middle of the night..
One more.. "Vanish" cleaning stuff
and the "music vid" is still there..
EDIT: "gaviscon" also... :-(
And a new one.. "Air Wick"
Is there another way to read the forum on a win-pc? (like the xda app on android?)
I'm afraid this won't stop..
yeahh its annoying. dont mind ads but the sound is annoying. Happened to me a few times now.
Twice in the library had my volume on and the add started screaming.
But mostly when I'm listening to music with my headphones and then the ad interrups my great songs

They need the ads so if not many people can donate they have the ads to receive the money as they are pain by the company submitting the ads. XDA should keep the ads, it is a great forum and deserves the money. I am 11 years old, no joke. I think XDA has helped me make lots of apps with help from coding, ROM cooking, theming, and more. XDA might get more money from the video ads, so that covers the bandwith costs for all us users to take our time to view the forum.
Sound:
If your using windows, click the sound icon, then mixer. Turn Firefox, Internet Explorer or Google Chrome sound off to 0 and keep the other sound on.

This gave me an idea, I installed opera browser on all my computers and set the volume to zero. For now opera is my "xda-app", so I can leave the sound on in my default browser (chrome)..
Yup, use the add blocker plugin for firefox which is posted above.
With add block you can coose adds you want to block. So you can leave all normal adds and block only adds with sound...
Cheers

Here is the problem, if XDA wants to make money from ads that is okay, but ads with sounds will just force more users to use ad blocking add-ons which in turn will lower the revenue from the ads....so kill the ads with sounds...
FYI these ad companies can tell if these is a rise in ad blocking amongst a forums users and will lower the payments made to a Forum..

@XDA: You should really quit your current ad network if you can't disable sound ads. I don't mind ads, sometimes I even click on them, but ads shouldn't contain sounds which aren't muted by default. I'm really going to hate XDA for those ads. This should be a high priority issue for you guys. If those sound-ads won't dissapear I'm going to install flashblock.

Intrusive ads? Post here!

The internet is full of advertisments and let's face it, almost every site that has an ounce of traffic uses ad revenue. The intention of xda is not to burden its members with ads that distract from the user experience. With that being said, if you have a problematic ad, please take a screenshot of the ad and post here so admin can take care of it. right now, that is the solution in place.
Thanks for your help in keeping XDA "intrusive ad free".

It doesn't happen all the time but I have this "mobprizes" redirect when visiting XDA.
Happened to me a few times so far, not sure if others are experiencing it.
Same as chazam ^^^^
First instance of it today. Web URL is mobprizes.com and the site header says 'Android Rewards'. Tried to browse XDA via Dolphin browser on Android and was auto-redirected to this spam page; you cannot press 'Back' or 'Exit' in the browser and have to click 'OK', whereupon another window opens asking you to enter your mob number (supposedly so they can contact you to sort out sending you your prize - which if you do a quick search on Google means you will receive plenty of premium rate text messages and no prize!).
Not sure what you folks can do but thought would mention it.
Incidentally, when performing a search re: this, one of the replies was on Yahoo Answers - when I clicked on this I was redirected to the same damn Android Rewards page!
I also noticed another forum in the search results is experiencing the same thing. Seems to be spreading.
Attached.
That ad at the bottom left corner just popped up from nowhere. I may not have captured it completely sry...
Edit: it's an IE rollover to view ad.
Hey everyone,
I have also created a forum where people (including myself) are experiencing similar problems.
Perhaps it would be a great idea to share our knowledge between the two forums and see what we can do to get rid of these annoying ads.
would of if i didnt have ad block

The JS alert window looks like that, since FF4.0. Type javascript:alert('test message') into the address bar.

I'm not really bothered by the ads so i dont need an ad blocker but this 'IE rollover to view' ad is being a pain in the rear.
Pls get rid of it.
Thanks.
Edit: started using ad blocker
i clicked a reply notification from an email sent by the forum
this is the page it took me to
i blanked out my location to stop aliens tracking me
No offence meant to anyone here, but I'm quite surprised at all of this. Adblocks for Chrome and Firefox are available easily, nobody uses IE anymore and if you're on XDA you probably have a rooted phone and should logically therefore have an adblock app. If you really dislike ads, there's no need to put up with them

I'm going to haveto agree with the OP in this one.
The advertising is becoming annoying and the re-registering method has been made to be difficult to see where the free option is...
Quickfix I disagree with you, this product is the most popular free Antivirus not because of bull**** advertising, but because of word of mouth!

I just had the same thing. I click on 'OK' or whatever it said when i should probably have just used the back button. It took me to the mobprizes thing which is clearly a scam. Hopefully just being taken to the site but not clicking anything wont have installed any malicious (i've literally no idea about android malware/viruses etc.).

atdmt Ad Server Floods Browser History So Back Button Doesn't Work

This has been bugging me for a while.
Occasionally when viewing the forums, I will press the "Back" button on my browser (currently IE9), and nothing happens. I'll hold click the Back button so my history appears, and it's completely overflowing with "atdmt" sites relating to the banner ads at the top of the forums.
I *LOVE* xda and want to support you guys in every way possible, and part of that is through the allowing of advertising that appears on this site. However, when it affects something so basic as flooding my history so that I can't navigate the forums properly, I have no choice but to add "atdmt" to my Block list in my router. While it solved the problem for me, it also takes money away from xda, which I'm not really thrilled about.
I've had the same problem on other sites which use atdmt.
So.....to xda admins......I recommend that you either put pressure on atdmt to fix this or choose a different advertising company to use on your forums.
I was about to post the link to the Intrusive Ads thread, but I see you found it.

Wasn't really sure if it was appropriate to that thread or not.....the ads aren't really intrusive were it not for the fact that it makes the Back button not work.
At least I searched for similar threads prior to posting!
