Who do I have to blow for unlimited data.
I try my hardest to connect to every possible WiFi connectiom but I always hit my data cap. I find my self turning my data connection off on the 15th ~ every month
Sprint?
How much data are you paying for???? 5GB?
the AT&T "unlimited" plan is worthless whichever way you look at it. You get throttled after 3GB of use, which is 1mbit up, 0.1mbit down, at which point your phone is worthless for just about anything useful. Just bite the bullet and pay for the data I guess. I was averaging 11-12 GB per month before this throttling started and I managed to get it down to 1.2-1.5 GB. The only usage habit I changed was avoiding downloading apps.
Not the end of the world, otherwise go to Sprint if you live in an unsaturated market with LTE or WiMAX, which is rare.

The "cap" is 5 GB for LTE, and you get throttled to 3G speeds.

Damn, thanks for the correction. I was speaking of my iPhone 4S experiences, guess they don't apply for non-Apple products.
Maybe I'll bite the bullet and change my 2GB plan for 3GB for $5.00 more. I'm not a terribly heavy data user anymore though. But OP, that sucks, sigh. Maybe you can buy a grandfathered SIM on eBay if you need it that badly?
For AT&T, get an original iPhone, place your standard sim in it, it will prompt you for unlimited data. Wait a reasonable amount of time (maybe a month) and then upgrade from your iPhone to whatever it is you want -- and take your data plan with you.
Good luck.

Just swap APN's when they throttle you. I've used a ton of data this month (thanks Sandy) and I just finally got throttled on my i717.
The AT&T $30 grandfathered plan is anything but "unlimited". I have been throttled so many times. Hardly going over 3GB's sucks.
I heard switching APNs doesn't work? Some day it will only allow for HSPA speeds and not LTE speeds if your successful.
I wish AT&T's unlimited plan was like Verizon's. I'd always buy at no commitment pricing so that's not a big deal to me. I'd do that each time to have truly unlimited LTE.
So, when you get throttle, do they send you some kind of notification that you are being throttled or does you speed just slow down? Been close to 5 gb a couple of times but have yet to see a drop in speeds. Going to test it one of these days when there is about a week left in cycle by exceeding the cap to see what happens for me.

I think they do the very first time, but its a warning that they will throttle you in future billing cycles. I was throttled for about 4 days in September and the speeds were not bad. I was able to do everything. It just wasn't super fast, but operable. I think I was getting about 400-500kbps (very nice Sprint speeds).
Between my work wifi and home wifi I never go over 2gb a month, I feel bad for you "Data Hogs" (AT&T words no mine)

That Sprint speed is ridiculous, I usually hit about 3 Mbps - 5 Mbps depends on location with my Galaxy S II on AT&T and that's just HSPA+ not on LTE.

Hmmm...how do you 'swap' APNs? I have only one in the list on my phone. (Right now, an SGS III). Or, how do you know what to manually add for a different APN?

You have to add the APN manually. There was a specific APN that wasn't checked for usage or throttled. I'm using past-tense because I've heard that when AT&T set the hard 3GB and 5GB limits for throttling on the unlimited plan, this trick stopped working.
To answer someone else's question about warnings, you should get an SMS warning you that you're close to the cap, and then another SMS to tell you that you've been throttled when you hit the cap.

Incorrect on all fronts. Buying a phone outright does not change your plan. This is actually the ONLY way you can keep unlimited for vzw. Also the bill does not go up $30 it simply changes their unlimited plan to the 2gb for the same price as the old unlimited. If they chose to go to the share data that will be different but vzw is in no way forcing anything on people except for taking their unlimited data, which blows. But that's life. And in ten years people will have no idea what unlimited data means

Im currently fed up with Sprint's .30mbps download in my area. I was thinking about switching to Verizon for the Galaxy Nexus, but I couldn't imagine giving up my anymobile any time or unlimited data. Even though the data is slow and terrible now, in 1 year or more, they will have lte (maybe) and then I would kill myself for not just waiting it out.
As I said in another thread milling over what-to-do regarding the same decision:
Being over-charged for data you get is preferable to being charged anything for data you don't get.

I kind of did. I'm just stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I really started noticing slow data when I got my Evo 4G the day it came out. I'm in Phoenix and I still don't have 4G. I've waited 2 years since I got the evo 4g to get 4g and over that period of time, 3g just keeps getting slower and slower. Im sitting on the second floor of my house with 4 out of 6 bars getting .32mbps. I can see the tower from my window because its on a light pole at the school a block away from me.
Faster data just means you get to your cap faster.
What's the point?
I use WiFi enough that it doesn't matter to me.

Holding out for sprint lte may be worth it if you're in a big city where you can almost guarantee it coming and they keep it unlimited. You may want to stay month to month until u decide

I'm in Los Angeles - pretty big city. They've had about 2 years to get wimax working here- I get about 500k when I actually can connect to 4G before it drops. How many years you going to wait for LTE to be acceptable in a "big" city? Ask people in NYC how much they are enjoying the "fast" Wimax they are receiving.
Oh and how is that unlimited working out for people who bought data connections - do you really think Sprint who was the first to charge $10 for rich data experience on newer cells is not going to stiff you on unlimited data soon? if they ever did offer decent data speeds, I'm sure they'd charge another $10 or $25 for an "enhanced" data experience.
If I'm thirsty and someone said I can have 5 gallons of water as fast as I can drink it or I can have one teaspoonful per hour each month with no limit - I'll take the 5 gallons.

Nothing like downloading a movie in under ten minutes... better be a good movie though since that uses up a good chunk of the 2GB you get per month.
Sorry, but it has to be about more than just raw speed.
This is like saying "I have a Lamborghini! But I can only drive in 40 miles a month"
The real question is, does 2mbit/s do it for you?
Because I don't know one thing you can't do on a phone [from stream music to streaming video] at 2mbit/s.

A lot of people seem to miss the point here. Yeah, you can get to the cap faster, but getting the faster speed is really just expecting you to use the same data amount, you just get it faster.

Well thats not entirely fair. 2GB isn't that much. In Cleveland I get great 4g speeds and good
(just as good as Verizon) 3g speeds, my biggest complaint is Toledo speeds (attrocious) where i'm spending most of my time nowadays, which is the main reason sprint isn't working for me great right now.
I'd switch if I didnt save tons of money on sprint (24% discount on top of their cheap plan), but I was just saying verizons biggest feature is LTE which sprint is supposed to have in 8 months or less, and 200+ markets in 2013.
No need to dog my suggestion, sprint is still cheaper than every other carrier but if their lte is unlimited and no extra charge other than the 10/Mo charge they already have, sprint will be very attractove.
switching to verizon/att on a 2yr contract is a big deal, much more pricey than sprint too. Unless you are well under 2GB and have unlimited pockets staying month to month til lte pricing is announced isn't bad.
I get your frustration, but coverage in your area is different. Sprint guarantees certain speeds for 3g/4g so if you're not meeting those call and they should let u cancel.

I am in the same boat, I drop calls left and right at my house and I recently moved and the data is just pure horrible.
I never go over 2 gb a month, The max I ever used was 3.5gb and that was when I first got the evo3d and I was doing speedtests left and right. I stream radio and music my way to work and from work. Now I have the gs2.
If I go verizon I will start out with 2 and I will just pay 10 bucks for the next 1gig and I am sure I will never go over that and my monthly discount will make up for that difference.
I used to get decent speeds at work but ever since the iphone launch I cant even hit half a meg, in the city I live I never hit even quarter mb ever since I moved here. I work in sacramento and the speeds on 3g have gotten worse, even 4g is capped at 2mb now it seems.
This! Over thr past few months I average maybe 3-4gb a month on Sprint, 3g mmostly as 4g iis way inconsistent and I a tired of data drops and awful battery life on it.
That being said, during peak hours incdenver, Sprint 3g is crawling in places I get 2mbps during off peak hours. Lately, at my gym, I can't even stream Pandora cuz it's so slow. I ended up getting tmobile for 14 days and I got about 7mbps average pretty much everywhere! Why'd I cancel? G2x was a letdown and I get sprint free. But seriously, caps are caps and I docsee myself aas being a heavy user and oon mobile, 5gb is plenty. I'm mobile a lot and rarely in one place to use wifi, I'd like to be on a network where, oh I dunno, I can at least stream youtube and not get stuck at 100-300kbps?

Just wondering if anyone has gotten throttled, and if you've been able to get around it by changing apn... (Im deathly afraid of getting throttled, but if I just get bumped down to HSPA+ its not a big deal)
My understanding is that AT&T doesn't throttle, they just keep adding 1gb to your usage for $10 everytime you go over.
So if you're on their 2gb plan and use 10gb in a month, that's 8gb over your plan at $10 per gig = $80 extra for that month.
...Personally, I'd rather be throttled.
For those that are still on the Unlimited Data plan (myself) you get throttled. I believe their rule is after 5GB of usage in a month you are reduced to EDGE speeds.

I'm on an unlimited plan and I got throttled after using only 2GBs. It was a weird situation though, and changing the APN got me back to HSPA+ speeds but no LTE. I couldn't get Visual Voicemail to work either and had to check it the old-fashioned way but others on the forum have switched APNs and reported no issues with Visual Voicemail.
I'm going to have to show my buddy with the Skyrocket how to add the HSPA+ APN then. That's one trick I've learned so far. He got throttled last month cause he's constantly using LTE.

I thought it was based on your billing cycle and your usage. Or are you saying it's across the board for all users?
AT&T says if you are in the top 5% of data users then you are subject to throttling once you hit the threshold of that top 5% percent. I think it's crap, some say it's justified in order to keep the network up to par.

So after have a iphone 3g and iphone 4 for last 4 years I am pretty sick of having basically the same thing for 4 years other than my 4 has a better processor and screen compared to 3G. So I'm looking to get out of the iphone and my contract just ended on saturday.
I have been looking and considering getting the S3 but I am very conflicted at the moment. I live in Charlotte NC and both at&t 4g lte and verizon's 4g lte are offered in Charlotte but verizon's lte coverage just smacks at&t's lte coverage(especially in the southeast u.s.).
As of right now I still have unlimited with at&t but just do to the vastness of verizon's lte coverage I have been wanting to switch for sometime and especially since my wife has a Razr on verizon lte I've been blown away by it compared to at&t normal 3g speeds of course.
I do travel with work so the coverage is important but basically I'm not sure if it's worth giving up my unlimited data with extreme lack of lte but great amount of hspa+ for verizon's lte.
and yes I see the reports on the locked bootloader from verizon... which has me thinking maybe I should just wait on this leaked and possible Razr HD or just say screw you verizon.

At&t's "Unlimited" is not unlimited for LTE. You only get 5GB per month. I know that's a lot of data, but you'd be surprised how fast that gets used up, AND you will get throttled after that until you next billing cycle. So you may need to take that into consideration.

Not exactly, there are differences.
On a grandfathered unlimited plan you get up to 5GB of data with an LTE device, 3GB on a non-LTE device. After 5GB (or 3GB) you will be throttled till your next billing cycle. As low as 160k with my past experiences of being throttled, which is useless.
On a tiered plan 3GB ($30) or 5GB ($50) you will get billed an extra $10 per GB you go over until your bill cycle ends. You do not get throttled on this plan, you just pay the overage. Its set up differently than the unlimited plan.

Yea att may still be unlimited but just google searching and seeing throttling results around 16k... it's like wow... useless..what works at 16k dl??? what do i choose? 5gb throttle cap or verizon 4 or 6gb cap, and that's before we get into the fact verizon is locked.

Well I got the Skyrocket about 6 months ago, my first LTE device. I had unlimited but at the time I was getting throttled at 2GB. That was a week into my billing cycle. The Skyrocket threads were blowing up with throttling and how to bypass it. There was a minor fix, being able to switch to an older APN, but we only got HSPA speeds, 1-1.5MBs. I couldn't take it anymore and gave in to AT&T and switched to a 5GB tiered plan. A couple months after that, there was a lawsuit against AT&T and the people won, so AT&T switched their policy and gave unlimited users 5GB for the same $30. Needless to say I wasn't allowed to switch back to my unlimited so I got screwed due to my impatience. When I got throttled i was getting about 160k. It was useless and my phone was unusable for internet, that's why I switched.

thanks for that info..ill see what happen when i hit my 5GB cap..sucks what AT&T do to loyal customers...when i got throttle on my iphone 4 3G it was not all the time i get slow speeds just depends on day/hour of day when cell towers are not hammered.. sucks that you dont have the unlimited data 30$ on 5GB sorry bout that.. AT&T just trying to squeeze every penny out to customers..dont like AT&T data plan prices 250mb wtf is that? 5 HD clips on youtube... unlimited data is why im still on AT&T 30$ is good if your still on grandfather.. but all companies are similar now no such thing of unlimited data even they say unlimited data with a (*) i knew this day was going to come when i had the iPhone 3Gs data was so more used then text/voice call.. i can live with DATA only.. i use data for VOIP/MSGing/text via APP..ok im dont with my rant:silly:
it will never be as it used to be because some select people abused the network and att and verizon went...hey we can charge for that!
I'd say stick with AT&T. They have the better network. Their H+ "4G" is more than enough to do anything and they are deploying that across the nation as well as their LTE network. H+ averages 5-8 megs for me. Basically their fall back network is loads better than Verizon's cdma network. Not sure who has the faster lte speeds but Verizon's got more markets when it comes to lte. However they have had nation wide LTE outages where I don't think AT&T has yet. I think we can all agree AT&T has worst customer service though. Hope this helps.

yeah. i've gone over this in my head over and over but i still can't decide what's best option...
As far as throttling goes for AT&T unlimited users supposedly gets throttled at 5 gigs of data. Biggest AT&T data plan is 5 gigs for 50 bucks. I'd say stick with unlimited (which is 30 I believe).

I'll second that, I have heard no good stories about Verizon recently.
same situation to me, need make an decision between att ultimate vs Verizon share data
I have an S3 but am using only 3G data from an old plan with ATT.
I was considering upgrading to a limited plan with 4G but am not sure what the point is. 3G really seems fast enough. And what's the point of using 4G when you can burn through your entire month's allocation in eight minutes (assuming 50Mbit download speed).
The download speed is nice but sorta useless on capped plans its the ping thats a big change.
So that time it takes to start the transfer of data is instant on 4G (LTE)

So I just upgraded to S3 today from the captivate. I have a grandfathered unlimited 3G data plan and they just upgraded it to unlimited 4G data plan free of charge, not sure if your case is the same but I didn't have to give up my unlimited data.
Also, just cause your speeds are faster doesn't necessarily mean you use more data. If you continue on the same trend of data usage you won't be hitting your limit any faster than you do now. But the speed at which you do things will increase

well, i have mine turned off as there isnt even LTE in most area's i go, and I'm in the Bay area. SF has LTE, but not east bay, or stockton where i am normally. so its just a waste of battery to have it on. IF u have LTE in ur area i think it would be worth it and depending on wut u are doing, MAY save battery as it would DL data faster, therefore completing wutever task faster..just my opinion..

edit: i stand corrected. i think i had my 4g turned off. i cant screenshot on aokp, but in the middle of concord i pulled 20.sumthin down and 13.4 up..THAS MORE LIKE IT AT&T!! now if they would jus offer unlimited plans like other carriers..

Faster is always better . However LTE drains the battery fast. I've dumb down my data for day to day functions. But when needed I switch back to LTE, specially when thetering.

Not sure what your data plan situation is, but even with grandfathered unlimited, as mentioned above, you can keep that plan with LTE; albeit with throttling after 3GB and a couple warnings. LTE is def worth it IMO, as for the 50mbps, it's certainly possible to test that high depending on where you are. Very traffic dependent. When it first switched on around here I was testing at 40+. It's since dropped to ~20, which I still enjoy quite a bit.

How do I pull that off? Getting an unlimited 4G plan free of charge?
Three times they have auto-swapped me to a capped 3 gigabyte capped 3G plan.

I still have my unlimited data plan from my iPhone days. When you upgrade to a LTE plan you still keep your unlimited but they throttle you after 5 gigs of data used. If I was still using my iPhone 4S they would be throttling me after 3 gigs of data used. So that is why I switched to an LTE phone. And so far I'm enjoying my S3!

You can switch to LTE data and keep your Unlimited Data Plan. Also you'll get throttled at 5gb, not 3gb of use. So if ou keep doing and using the Internet the same way you'll be fine, unless you start downloading things, watching HD videos, etc. I've burned my 3gb plan in two days last month when I got my S3. LTE its worth it. Here I've got 25mb downloads and 12mb uploads.
Hope this helps http://www.att.com/esupport/datausage.jsp?source=IZDUel1160000000U
And BTW you just call Customer Service and tell them you want to upgrade to an LTE Unlimited Data Plan, that's what we did with my mother's S3. Mine was upgraded from 3GB 4G(H+) to 3GB LTE. No charge, and the data counter was reset to 0mb.

Ah - well, here's the problem. I have unlimited data for NON-smartphones. So I called and I seem to be getting a hard time.
I get a consistent 50ms ping, 22mb down and 11 mb up with LTE in san diego(att). If you are in a city with LTE, I recommend you use it, its very fast. Plus not many people are using LTE with att yet, so there is plenty of bandwidth(for now)

Same in Toronto on Rogers for me. Most impressive difference you will see over 3G is installing of applications, on which downloads are 99% instantaneous.... Also downloading files and documents. Browsing is also slightly faster..

I just got the S3 at lunchtime today, and they quietly deleted my unlimited data, and now say it can't be added back; and that I didn't ask for it, or authorize that, does not matter in the least.
I may end up with a different service provider out of their (apparently successful) attempt to steal my unlimited data account.

I was curious about differences between data plans. I'm grandfathered in to unlimited data and I've heard that they will throttle your data speed if your in the top nth% of bandwidth usage. Is there any way to get an idea of how many gb of data that actually is?
And are there any cases where at&t has taken unlimited data away for abusing it?
I was downloading 700mb ROM on LTE and it took like 60 second which is faster than wifi, but I sure as hell wouldn't do that if I was on a 3gb plan.

Every month that I hit 3GBs of data use, I get throttled. I have been told that people grandfathered into the Unlimited Data Plan and using an LTE phone get throttled at 5 GBs of data usage. This will be my first month on LTE, so I guess we will see! Until now I have been on a 3G plan, so I am hoping that it does change it to 5 GB or higher.
I got throttled @ 5GB on LTE about 5 days ago with 12 more days left on my billing cycle
It's actually not that bad being throttled...it's capped to only about 600Mbps. The thing is at network access starts fasts but quickly slows down to 600Mbps. Due to this web browsing, emailing, and messaging doesn't seem any slower as they usually require short/brief network access. What is noticeable is Youtube performance and updating/downloading apps via GooglePlay.

I've read that if you get throttled on the LTE plan @ 5GBs you can switch your APN over to the "4G" (e.g. ATT APN used on the SGH-I777) and you can get highers speeds (not LTE) until you hit 3GBs cap.
Haven't tried it out myself.

You are correct, that's what I do everytime I hit my 5GB limit., just switch to 'phone' APN and change you connection type to not look for LTE. works like a champ.
do a search for the 'phone' APN
I got throttled for the first time this month on the last day before my billing cycle ends (I got the text message a day earlier). I'm on a grandfathered unlimited plan and AT&T reports my data usage at 5.1Gb. The strange thing is that a few days ago, my data was reported to be ~8Gb by AT&T and by my phone. My phone still says ~8Gb, but AT&T now says 5.1Gb. My speed is now around 600Kbps down and 2Mbps up, where it used to be 16Mbps down and 6Mbps up. I haven't tried the APN switch, but I might try it if I get throttled earlier in the month.

You say "600 Mbps" but I really think you mean 600 Kbps. There's a big difference and 600 Kbps is actually painfully slow when you're coming from 8-25 Mbps depending on if you have HSPA, HSPA+ or LTE. My home internet connection is 889 Kbps and it's really slow for downloading large ROMs. So unfortunately I have been quite reluctant to download ROMs from my phone because I don't want to get throttle on my unlimited plan. It looks like I will continue to not go over my 5 Gb soft cap so I won't be throttled. I might as well not have unlimited
Think about this. Yes we get throttled at 5gb. But, we pay the same as a tiered 3gb plan. And even if we hit 5GB, we don't get charged an extra $10 for more data.
I do agree and I'm just nit picking. I consider myself lucky that still have an unlimited plan. My situation may be a bit different than others because my phone is by far the fastest data connection I have. Period. Way faster than my home or my job, so I have a tendency to use it for everything. I feel as though they could give people more data though. I realize that a 'small percentage' use over 5 gb, but I don't see a problem with doubling all the tiered plans including those with grandfathered unlimited plans soft cap. AT&T has a LOT of money.

I think i may be getting thorttled... what speeds are u guys getting?
They throttled me at the 2gb mark. Called them and *****es them out something fierce. They told me it was because it was I had gone over 2gb in one cycle. I asked them about the past where the website said I had used 17gb. Didn't get throttled then, why now?
Dude couldn't give me an answer. I think the system picked up on my because I sent the *3282# to see what my data usage was.
After I got off the phone with them, researched and forunf the other apn settings to use, no problems thus far. No throttling, no slowdowns. That was with my galaxy note i717.
Not I have a razr xt910, don't bother to check my data and, no throttling.
