So, this device handles storage slightly differently than my HTC EVO 4G did. That, which pretty much needed an SD card for storage, mounted it in /mnt/sdcard/. This phone however, mounts the external SD card in /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/. I am guessing this is because this guy has 16GB internal storage already, and changes are if you were to dissect the phone, you'd probably find an SD card in there too.
I am thinking I'll just move my card contents over to internal storage. Programs that backup/restore data to /mnt/sdcard/ don't realize that this path isn't actually external storage.
I am wondering how this will affect those of us that frequently reflash. Does that partition get wiped when the ROM is wiped? Or is it really just another SD card internally that isn't touched by the system kernel or ROM except for storing user data?
I also have another Q, that's not online with the OP exactly but related to the topic. I'm coming from an e4g to the et4g and plan on using my sdcard from the e4g in the et4g (at least until I buy a 32gb card). I notice that there are many system files on the sdcard from the e4g, are these gonna be an issue with the et4g?
also, I was thinking to make a backup of the card as is to a hard drive, then delete all the files and reformat the card (fresh start), then add back only those I feel are necessary (backup apks, titanium backup files, pics & vids)....is this feasible?
lastly, are there any "don't touch" files on the scard that I should be aware of.

So, what is your question? You should be able to move the card, but like I stated, the paths seem to be different. It may be the same for you since both devices are Samsung, but maybe not.

There shouldn't be anything you shouldn't touch. As far as I know, I think a program like Titanium Backup will archive everything.
What I would do is use Titanium Backup to backup old phone and restore to new phone. Then start the programs you use with personalized data at least once. If you end up with paths on both the phone storage and external storage, move the external over to the phone, replacing/combining.
I ended up doing this and found that my external SD card is now empty.. Starting clean!
It's pretty amazing how far 16GB built into a phone can go. I don't use my phone for movie watching or music often, so we'll see. Maybe I will.
I just notced on the e4g that there are 2 paths that both seem to lead to the same. destination file.
one is: /mnt/sdcard
the other is: /sdcard
the content is exactly the same. not sure if that info helps you any.

Shouldn't make a difference. I think there are two mounts to support applications that look to just /sdcard.
May i have 3rd grade level instructions on how to move all the contents from my sd card(evo) into the internal memory please?
Thanks,

Once you move the SD Card from your EVO 4G to the Epic 4G Touch, attach a USB cable to your PC. In the notification area on the phone, you have to touch the USB Connected status and then touch the button that says "Connect USB storage".
This will mount TWO removable disks. One will be the size of your SD Card. The other will come in at around 11.5GB. The 11.5GB is the internal storage.
Just use Windows to move everything over. You may want to back up both before you make changes just in case.
If the hardware doesn't mount in Windows, you may need to install the drivers first. They are installed with Samsung Kies, which is on their site.
If you need more info, let me know.

ok thanks...im thinking to do this. im going to back up the entire sdcard on my PC (and ext HD) before i do anything.
also, i see about 15 files that have a "." prefix, ex) ".dataviz" are these system files for the apk's that are installed? should these be deleted or just leave and if i find it has been created on the phones storage just move it over?
anyways...my et4g just came in today, so after work i'm going in my cave to unbox and forget about the rest of the world.
I have a 16GB Galaxy Note II, and put a 32GB card into the unit. How do I use the SD Card for application storage, like my HTC EVO allowed me to do. I can't even use the Move To SD Card option in the Applications function under Settings.
Thank you.

You cant as of right now. Jelly Bean wont allow it. I dont know if this works for the sprint version but on the international version they were rooting and then putting directory bind on to allow them to do apps2sd. I believe directory bind is found on xda only. I dont know where it is. I was thinking of using it myself.
yet another complaint I have with this phone! I wont lie for the price tag im running into a lot of things my old EVo 3D could do with ease that I am banging my head against the wall trying to figure out on this device.
SO the best work around that I have done is use a program called Directory bind. However you will need to root your device in order for this program to work right. So... I dont know how you feel about doing that or how savy you are in rooting and all that good stuff.
I will say that it only takes about 20 minutes to root the device and install Directory Bind now I have a lot of my programs stored on the SD card instead of in the phones internal memory still though there should be a cleaner way to do this than have to use a program to work around it..
Do you have a link to directory bind?
I'll leave this right here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262

sdcard0 to extsdcard
I found a scripts the tricks ICS to use your external sdcard as your internal storage. So when apps write data to sdcard0 it is actually writting to your external sd. I tried it and it works!
I dont have permission to post outside links but you can find it at galaxynote2root in the tutorials section.
Im not even worried about apps and their data moving to sdcard as much as I want a fix for the internal memory being labeled as sdcard..
On my past htc devices this wasnt the case... Its an issue having the Real sd card labeles as extSDcard because apps such as taparalk and my browser select the default term sdcard and dont allow the option to change the path to my real sdcard.
So anytime I save an image or a file it goea straight to internal storage instead of the sdcard. Again I could care less about apps2sd but I need to keep apps separated from files I download to the device. Dont want my phones 16 gigs being eaten up by my photos and music and roms and such..
Is there anyway to rename the sdcard without messing up the system any?

Ok, try ICS SD Binder in the app store. It will provide I link inside your sdcard0 directory that will give you the option to save your images to your extsdcard. So in what ever app your using if it has the options in the settings to choose your save directory, ICS SD Binder will provide the link to your extsdcard.

in the first box "original mount point" do i need to select /mnt/sdcard or /mnt/extSdCard ?
and New mount point should just be labeled external_sd. Do i need to check any of the boxes below?
Excuse the noobness with this app, never had to do this before with my other devices, it just worked as it should and didnt have internal memory lableled as sdcard when it wasnt.
Thanks in advance.
Just check bind sd to new mount point, you don't have to change anything else.

Link2SD does not work on the Note2. You need to use ICS SD BINDER. I tried it my self on my rooted GN2. But this will not let you run your apps from the sdcard. It only provides a link or a shortcut if you will in your sdcard0 directory that targets your external sdcard. So if you have an app that saves data and it lets you browse a location for the data in your sdcard0 directory, this gives you the opportunity to point that in your external sdcard directory. Ex, I use a app to hide my pic on my phone. the hidden encrypted pic are stored in the sdcard0 dir, and it does not give me now option to browse my external sdcard and save the files there, this app solves that problem.

Hi I have been dealing with this problem for awhile now and still haven't been able to find a fix (without rooting). After I updated JB from Kies when it came out my internal and memory card folders are completely different? Also it says I only have 11.95GB total in my internal memory. The internal memory folder says :sdcard0. And my memory card folder is: extSdCard? I'm not rooted. Does anyone know how to get the folders back to the regular names ext sd ect? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

That is how it they are formatted now. It's not a mistake or anything being messed up. I guess I'm just used the internal being sdcard0 and ex sd card being extsdcard. I don't use myfiles much. I use root explorer and it can displays it as storage and then inside that folder is extsdcard and sdcard. Or there is a fodler just called sdcard for the internal in the root of the file system.
What problem is it creating, other than just being different than you are used to ?

The folders with the pictures and songs are not recognized, and the Gallery doesn't show hundreds of pictures, but i see if i use a file manager. i'll try not to rant too hard but Kies and OTA firmware updates are a joke. you are essentially dirty flashing one rom over another with no real clearing of caches, no resetting, no way for all the programs to regroup, rebuild and run on the system hardware/software properly. the thing about dirty flashing is, it sticks well with some devices but generally not with many others. you'll see these types of issues many times among the avid flashers and those that must have the latest release of a developers rom.
i would recommend backing everything up, booting into stock recovery, wiping data/factory reset and wiping cache. if you decide to perform another update via kies in the future, i would do this procedure before AND after the update.
yes, you have to start over when you perform these sorts of actions but you have to ask yourself, are you happy with how your device is performing now (before the update)? is it worth starting over? (it might be if you're going to run on the updated OS for a year or so) and how well do you want it to perform after you install the update?
cheers
EDIT: i just assume everyone accesses recovery and download mode so i didnt post the button combo. recovery is: Volume Up + Home + Power. release just the power button when you get a vibrate.

This is normal for a 16GB SGS3. 16GB is advertised but actual formatted available space is less. 11.95GB is right on par. This is the case for just about all devices that have memory that is writable, including hard drives on a computer.

Any particular reason why you are using Apps2sd? $10 to $20 will land you an external memory card with huge amounts of space (32GB at least). This is plenty to store music, photos, and other misc. files. And even with a ton of apps installed to internal, you still should have ample space left over. There is just no good reason to use Apps2sd on this phone as it has so much internal memory. If this is just to keep you from losing data, then I would suggest rooting and using an app such as Titanium Backup as it makes it super easy to restore apps and the corresponding data after anything that requires a factory reset.

Actually i did.
After the update, without factory reset, everything was (almost) fine… except a strange malfunction of the Gps (lock signal lost after a while) and sporadic reboot without reason. For the Gps I’ve found here the solution (NV Rebuild), but for the reboot… I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided for a factory reset. After that my ext card, with the ICS paths, was not recognized. So bucked up everything, format the ext card and let Kies sync my files and create all the folders needed from JB: Camera Photo Video for pictures, and media for the music. Now I’m let’s say 90% ready to go… I’m curios to test especially the Gps.
So I don't know what I did but I went to my recovery (TWRP) and accidently did something I do not know what, but now I can not view my pics, files, music from both SD/internal..but when I reboot my phone and check on the computer I see everything there and my storage says it's full. I just can't see it on the phone

I think it would be very useful if you can provide a lot more details and specifics about your situation like
which rom are you using, did it ever work properly if so what was the last thing you have done with the
phone before you started having this issue.
If I were you since you can see your internal and external sdcards on your computer I would first create
two new folders on the computer's desktop, one for internal sd and the other external sd.
Then copy all the files and folders from your internal/external sdcard to the appropriate folders on your desktop.
After doing that check how much space is being used in each of your two new folders on your computer's desktop.
See if there are any really large files which look suspicious to you.
After doing that and if the sdcards are either really full or not really full you will have a better idea of what to do to
trouble shoot the issue you are having with the phone.
It's always a good idea in any case to have a backup of both internal and external sdcards on your computer.
Good luck!
It isn't an ROM issue, but I was on PAC Rom. My problem is I did something in the recovery by mistake and pressed something maybe that formatted my memory?? :crying:
edit: Issue seems to be fixed..

That's one of the reasons I was suggesting that you copy everything from both internal and external
cards to folders on your computers desktop.
So you could see what you really have. If you get a message saying sdcard full or anything like that
it normally would mean that the sdcard has not been formatted, if it was it would be empty and it would
not give an error message saying that it's full.
Sometimes the PC will see the files after its been wiped by the phone. Copy everything to desktop, hope it actually copies everything, format sd card using Android OS, copy everything back, get a Dropbox account.

Find a root file manager.
Go to
Data/media.
That's your internal sd card. Some roms create a virtual sd card (sdcard0 or emulated sdcard0), which is android making a a fake one. All your pictures are still on your phone.
Just copy data/media into the virtual sd card an reboot. Your stuff shall appear again. If you have issues just pm me.

Well that's the same for most phones. I have the main memory in my phone. Then the internal sd card, along with external, there's no way to choose where is there? Couldn't you just use root browser go into system apps and move the apk to your SD card? I've done that before, worked good for me. Or use clean master and move it. I've done all of the above across almost every manufacture. I've worked with sisters LG's my HTC, dads samsung, friends moto, and all those methods have worked perfect I will see if I can find anything tomorrow, lol gotta be up in like 5 hours xD
