Jelly bean would be better it's much more advanced in development, good charging drivers many less bugs IMO.
yeah, ics or jellybean would work either way. and i need to keep all my apps on stock, so i can't transfer apps. Anybody, just make one!

Seriously?
If you're going to use stock, then why do you need an altROM for ICS or JB? The way it is now, you'll have both stock altROM and ICS or JB, so what does it matter which boot the stock OS is on?
Something here isn't making a whole lot of sense

I want all personal files on stock, and jb or ics for compactibility issues. trigger anything?

Sorry man, would do it for you, however, I'm currently upgrading my desktop's memory and hdd drives. Won't be done for a week or two. I could do it on my netbook, but that would take forever I would assume. Just do it yourself it really isn't that hard. If you want an Ubuntu distro on your pc use wubi if you have windows already installed. If not, Install it on your pc. Good luck.

Dual booting only creates an extra system, data and cache partition using part of the sdcard. Whatever is left of the sdcard is shared between the two ROMs external storage. As far as internal storage is concerned, you just install whatever apps you want for each ROM while it is running.
But (and I cannot stress this enough) backup your sdcard to your COMPUTER before doing anything.

The fastest way to get nothing, is to demand something.
I don't see any reason you can't use a program like Titanium Backup, and save that information to restore it to whatever system you are booted into. Otherwise, I suggest you suck it up and make your own altrom with the information that has been provided to you in this thread.
Good luck.

Everyone seems to always suggest downloading titanium backup and freezing everything instead of just deleting it. Why? We have plenty of evidence of the apps that it is safe to get rid of and the ones that ya better not. So why does it seem that people are worried about deleting them. I am not a NASCAR fan and I don't see myself becoming one so why not just get rid of the app completely? Am I missing something?
Safe from what I have been told and read to delete are :
Blockbuster
Kindle
Amazon mp3
NOVA
Sprint TV
NASCAR
Sprint Football
Sprint Hotspot
Sprint Navigation
Personal preference, if you don't want them, delete away.
I would say from your list that you are right as long as you have a nandroid backup to restore. I have had my Evo start acting weird after I uninstalled some bloat ware so I restored the nandroid and just froze the apps instead. After CM7 final came out I dropped the stock rom, still have a backup, installed the Cyan goodness and have no plans of going back other than install new radio updates. The main benefit to uninstalling them is to free up space. The choice is yours.
Why waste time deleting them? They are installed to /system, so freeing that up doesn't free up the /data partition.

I'm confused , elaborate for me please.
Everyone is not experienced at flashing and tinkering with their devices. Think about it. A lot of people do things to their devices and when they've messed something up, they post here looking for help without stating what they have already done. Telling people to freeze the stuff they don't want is just a safeguard. Those of us who are a bit more experienced will go beyond TB. I hope that made sense.

That was all I was trying to get across was that if you are new to rooting and deleting/changing system files then you are better off just freezing the apps. It is normally safe but most people try to change something before they realize what they are doing, and don't have or know of a way to fix it. If a person wants to uninstall an app by all means go ahead that is one of the main reason for rooting your phone. It also makes it a lot easier to help them fix it if they know what they did.

I've also heard people use the reasoning that if you uninstall system apps you cannot accept an ota, so they freeze them. This way if they want to update, they can just defrost and accept.
I don't understand wanting to accept an OTA, but I also don't understand staying on the stock rom when there are so many great devs making awesome roms.
But people like what they like, I guess you can't knock that.
Hey there are 3 different people from NC in this thread.

I thought about staying with the stock rom at first then I saw what I am missing. I love running CM7 and I have tried others. The main thing for me is that I'm now running Android 2.3.3 which has several features that I wanted and got tired of waiting on Sprint. Don't get me wrong I will stay with Sprint and they have one of the better update records but when Android 2.4 is coming fast and I am stuck on 2.2 with 2.3.3 what seems to be everywhere else. I can't stand that. I only hope that the HTC Evo 3D will get rooted because I plan on getting it as soon as it comes out. I was the first person at the Greensboro Besy Buy that got the Evo 4g and I will do it again.

WTF??????????
Hey guys, just a quick question. I really like the format of the Kindle Fire Reader but I prefer ICS. Does anyone know how I can get the same format kindle app on the ICS rom that was released?
There is a big difference in my opinion. The one that I download on ICS has all kinds of weird spacings and other odd things where the original app for the kindle fire has perfect spacing. I tried doing a titanium backup of it and bringing it over to ICS but i had no dice.
Any ideas as to what I would need to do to bring it over to the ICS rom?
Great question, Im wondering the same thing. Subscribed.
Agreed, the stock reader is great. My only two gripes are you can't change the fonts and colors, except for the three background options, and two, I'd love a page turn animation like iBooks has.
Could that be incorporated into the existing build, or it would have to be a completely different app all together?
Im not sure, but I am hoping that someone looks @ this and figures out how to get the app over because I love ICS and but can't stand the app that's in there.
I would start a [request] thread in the developer thread if I had over 10 posts
The reader app is integrated into the launcher, and most likely not able to port. You cannot choose a book from in it. When I had stock with ADW Launcher, I had to run the stock launcher if I wanted to read a different book.

try cool reader, it's pretty nifty with a bunch of features. I really love the kindle reader app on stock too, it's what is keeping me from ics, but when I do mess around with ICS for a good amount of time, I use Cool Reader and I like it a lot.

I purchase my books from Amazon and I have a Kindle as well so I'd like to use the Kindle app for features like page and highlight syncing and book extras.
Okay, I'm a little confused (surprise surprise) but how is the "stock" reader different from the Kindle Reader app you can download from the market? I do most of my eReading on a Kindle Touch because of the ePaper, but I can see myself wanting to look at color books on the Fire some day. I thought the apps are pretty much the same?
EDIT: Wait...just tried the Kindle app under ICS...very different. Wow...it used to be almost the same, but wow...they really changed since the last time I loaded this thing on a tablet.
If anyone has the stock app somewhere, I can take a crack at making it work. I'm not a OS dev type which is why I have to use ROMs other people make, but I'm a decent hacker and have written a few complex Android apps as well. Maybe I can figure something out.

Google play store.
EDIT: Okay, I screwed up. I don't have the free Oxford Dictionary anymore. I have a dictionary I paid for and all other paid items. Perhaps the Oxford one is only something they make available for actual Kindle devices which technically our Fire's are not if we put a custom ROM on them.

When I hold on a word in the Kindle app on gedeROM 1.3, it gave me the prompt to download the dictionary.
I installed the dictionary from within Kindle.app.
I wouldn't mind a Kindle app that was like the OEM Kindle Fire interface, but able to be quit, like an app should. The cover flow was pretty cool, but I needed more than the default Kindle Fire implementation could give me.

Hi, I'm new.
Just got the Note 2 (i317) and have been doing my research in regards to rooting and installing a mod.
If I understand this correctly, I need to
1) Root device (going to use toolkit provided by XDA)
2) install MOD or is it ROM?
I want to get 4.3 on my device and I think Hellybean is it?
As far as I know, I don't need to flash it.
I'm very very ignorant on all of this. But believe me, I've been researching now for a while and still not completely confident on all the terms.
I've been able to learn about PC operating systems and have done much tinkering with the various linux distros. I also jailbroke my iPhone but then lost that when 6.3 came out.
The jailbreak for iPhone was rather simple. Just plug and go basically.
This all seems a bit more complicated but I am not going to settle for the Note 2 the way it came with all of the AT&T crapfest.
In short, I won't my phone to never lag, to scroll smoothly from screen to screen and use as little battery as possible.
Any help you all could give me would be eternally appreciated.
I have mad respect for your abilities and wished I didn't have ADHD or I would have been a programmer. All things tech related fascinate me.

Lots of conflicting instructions here. If you want a custom rom you
first need a pc running Odin software.
Download TWRP for odin. This is called a custom recovery.
Flash TWRP.
Go get the rom you want and download it to your phone.
Reboot to TWRP recovery.
Wipe data and system. Flash rom. The rom will be rooted by the creator of it.
Sign in and set up your phone. Browse for more roms.
You are now an addict.

Then for rooting go HERE:

Sometimes people try to help but don't give the right info. Especially to someone that's very new to the flashing world!! Lol
But the FIRST thing you need to do is make a back up after you get your recovery installed!!! That's your first step. So if down the road you run into problems you'll have yourself, a new untouched back up waiting for you.
And the best thing your doing is your reading and learning the basics of Android...

no more storage?
I went ahead and rooted and installed clockworkmod and hellybean.. everything went fairly well.. couple of minor
problems like contact duplicates, triplicates, etc.. frustrating.. some of my apps didn't retain their history so I'll have
to start all over on Royal Revolt. But there are much bigger problems in the world so I will be content.
One question I do have though: Even though I have a 32 gb micro sd card on the way, right now my Note 2 is of the 16 gb variety.
After this root and Hellybean install, I'm seeing that most of that 16 gb is used. Where can I actually see what is taking
up so much storage and is there a way to remove some of it? Or is like the Windows OS's like that magically eat up your storage
every time ya sneeze?
Not having used hellybean, but I'll guess it's probably still the same:
Home screen
Menu-> > settings
Storage
....wait for it to calculate the file groupings
Press on any of them to drill down to get a better view of what's eating space.
I was going to post a picture for you, but the xda app doesn't seem to like that any more. Sorry.
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Is there a non-destructive way to free up some of that memory? This seems like
a situation in which a huge portion got allocated to a particular partition. Am I right?
By the way, I'm very pleased with Hellybean. I've now got an international phone, the battery life is noticeably better,
no AT&T junk, smoother startup and shutdown, and the scrolling is just superb.
It does crash or malfunction ever so often but the tradeoff is worth it and a simple reboot clears that up.

The duplicate contacts assuming you synced with a Google account (gmail) Sound's like it's displaying all your contacts not in a proper group and making dupes as well as showing the contacts saved directly on the phone.
If you are using a google account you can head over to Gmail and arrange and have all your contacts synced there instead and in their respective groups (friends, co-workers, etc) as well as merging/deleting any duplicate people in your phonebook. This actually happened to me as well before, just be sure when you add new numbers to save them via your google account so when you do flash another rom you won't have to worry about backing up your contacts.
This subject is widely all over the web. I have read until I am blue in the face. I am trying to find someone, with the same question I have, so I can use that answer for my problems. But, alas, I have to have problems no one else has, or the problem is so easy to understand, and fix that I am the only one, who does not know the solution.
I have no questions about the rooting process. I have not been lucky enough to have gotten that far. My problem is with downloading files, needed later I am assuming to be back on the fire, When I try to down load the drivers and what not from xda developers, I am unable to do so. When the download process is finished, chrome will not let it load, and dismiss is the only option I have. It states that download is laden with viruses. I have tried to load 6 of the versions that are listed, with same results.
I figue if I cannot get past this little step I probably should not attemp to root.
Your help will be greatly appreaciated. Why do these root help sites, not list the exact way, to get to the downlaod needed off of xda, everyone just alludes to the area it will be but nothing specific. Is there patent issues here or what?
The only thing you need is the kindle fire utility found in this link here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192818
Then just follow all the steps and you'll be good to go.

Do you have an anti virus program installed? If so it may be giving a false positive on the files you are trying to download and preventing them from being downloaded. You can try disabling the AV program and then see if you can download a file.

Please check out the image below. It doesn't matter what I do..delete, reformat these odd ball folders and files...sometimes over 500 of them, always come back! Believe me. Any help at all short of drop testing the phone would be greatly appreciated! Thanks heaps for the read.

What is the icon in the notification bar with the mu symbol? The mu seems to be part of the equation.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
Yeah, couq76 is right, the first icon on the top left is the culprit. Find that app and delete it.
BTW, how come you have 3 gps signal icons?

if it is uTorrent, they're probably temp files that haven't been downloaded yet. If you watch how torrents download on a PC you'll see there are usually temp files that have to be "filled in" with the file data
if there are no active torrents then those files are probably just leftovers from abandoned downloads.

Right on all counts guys. And pretty fair eye balling as far away as you are. Yes my first thought was that uTorrent Beta was dropping some bugs, so naturally I uninstalled it and cleaned up what I could find within the system. Then I deleted the weird (looked like uTorrent folders and files. Cleaned up again but the suckers came back like bad pennies but this time they seemed to grow logarithmically. The seemed to be attracted to a folder that I had named "Programs" as I was going to stash uninstalled programs inside (go figure) as that was the first folder to be come affected again. So I got out the RAID, bombed them again; all 458 of them now; then formatted using the note 2 stock program and wonder of wonders they came back again. IOkay I'm thinking I'll fix all you guys. I pulled the external SD Card, slipped it into the (make it the right size thingy) to fit in the media slot of my laptops and long formatted the 32GB there. Guess what, no luck the [email protected]@rds were back the next day. My last thought is to boot up with Hiren's Boot DVD and do a 010101010101 back to brand new were it a real hard drive "destructive low level format but with my luck so far, I'll either ruin the SD Card or the damn bugs will return. I'm flat out of ideas, What do you guys all think? he said "still befuddled"!
BTW, I am as well clueless as to why Malware Bytes shows up three times in notification but it did catch a bug first time out. Or maybe it just wanted to look good..who knows at this point (laffin) I just uninstalled and reinstalled it now only one icon show up. So, I am Waaay open for suggestions. Thanks for your time and thoughts guys. Much appreciated.
PS. Just as a sidebar: It always upset me when I'd install one of these Android type programs. The nearly brag about stealing your undoes and shoes. Now I ask ya, why would something like AndroZip need to access my phone? Irked me a bit so I got to searching and by god there are APKs that are supposed to be able to turn x-ray vision off. Hoping this is not a waste of your time....The one I like best so far is App Ops, the next in the "try it out line" is Advanced Permissions Manager. Both rate well and have the right look and so far have not crippled a program. Amazing. Looking forward with baited breath for your sage like observations and advice....and that of any other or you smart guys. Thanks again.

Im no dev, but in your recovery menu try wipe cache, data, and factory reset. if that dont work try a fresh install of your rom with out the sdcard. if it seems to work try using the sd card again. At least that will give you a clue to where the files are coming from

Hi,
Great minds do think alike. I did as you suggested a week or so back excepts I did it harder. Although I left the Extended Memory Card in, I accidentally wiped the whole phone and formatted everything using TWRP. Still the buggers returned! However
Since formatting again killing them all 2 days ago using using the android 4.3 internal app formatting app the backwards u's have yet to come back! I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for coming by to see me.

Your very welcome, that is why we are all here . definitely keep us all posted. Who knows maybe the next guy will catch this new disease you speak of and come across this and it may either help him, or he can help us figure out the source. Meanwhile I suggest that you get some condoms for your phone ;P
