Im choosing between the Galaxy S III(Telus) and the One X+. I want to run custom roms, CM/AOKP/Liquid(not sure which)..Im currently on the Telus SII but ive got a free upgrade this Dec.
1.) Are there any limitations with using roms on this device...or can i just flash Recover(Odin)+Rom+Modem and be done and easy?
2.) Ive read some mixed reviews that the pentil screen kind of sucks, any input on that?
3.) Any other issues with this device I should know about?
Ive read around as much as i can, but just wanna make sure!
Thx!
Loving my new sg3, was easy to root, and flash, and it's fast, even nandroids happen fast, I'm running CM10 (jellybean) only thing I can't use is netflix, haven't looked to see if it has a fix yet.
Teleported from CM10 on my SG3
I came to the s3 from an iPhone 4 and could not be happier, which would have surprised me 4 months ago.
I can't do any comparison to the One X+, but the S3 is extremely zippy stock, and even more so once you're rooted. The camera on it is fantastic and is probably my personal favorite feature. I can see where people complain about the screen. It is a bit dark and difficult to see in direct sunlight, but it's definitely high quality.
Rooting and flashing custom ROMs was easy even for me without having any experience with android. I would definitely recommend it.

Exactly my situation. Switched from the iphone 4 and I had no problem getting used to rooting and flashing my gs3. It's so much easier than jailbreaking (ios devs take a while and it's really hard to downgrade blahblah).

I updated my s2 for the one x when it came out and loved the look and feel of it but ROMs like aokp, miui didn't work all the greatest when I had it not sure if now its the same. Didn't like waiting for the updates and for s-off. Not sure if I'll be the same with the one x+ but not sure if I would go with a HTC phone anytime soon. Love my s3 so much more and the roms, also super easy to root and everything.

The only differences I believe would be APN (network) settings. You can add Telus APN settings to any rom.
Since your free upgrade is in December I'd wait for the new HTC droid dna (dlx) looks like it's going to be very nice phone! 1080p screen, 5inch is just a bit bigger than s3.
I have both one x and s3, I like the screen on one x more than the s3. It's very easy to flash ROMs on s3 and all the att ones will work on telus. Rogers bell and telus have the exact same phone. I use telus phone on Rogers network and I have tried most of the ROMs here, they all flash easy, some have minor bugs but they do work. You can flash any ROM that's made for the i747, as long as its not made for the international s3 you can flash it.

Telus PROBABLY wont get that. My main concern is getting roms on there. Also, It looks like Rogers gets the same model #, meaning if i ever switch, i can flash their modem and voila..rogers phone.
I went and checked out an SIII, it had a really nice screen, the SII from Telus/Tmo/etc in North america all had screen blotches and lines, S3 seems to have none of that!

Hi there I have a rogers gs3 and I am thinking of switching to a nexus. I love the gs3 but I also love installing ROMs and unfortunately there are not that many at&t/ rogers ROMs out there. Not even a single miui ROM
I have been reading g up on the specs for both phones and I don't see a big difference in either phones.
What's your take on the phones? Am I making a right choice if I switch phones?
Also what section of the forums would I be looking in for ROMs for the rogers nexus?
I would say it depends on what is important to you. if flashing ROMs(customizing) is what you prefer then go for the nexus.
and yes your are correct ..there is not a big difference or gap on hardware between the two.

I think that was only an issue on the VZW version no?
If you love your ROMs then this is the phone for you. I love my GNex!
Definitely better if you really wan't the customizations, the newest android first and stable clean android.
However the hw on the nexus does lack behind the gs3 hw quite a bit.
Thanks for all your responses. I really like different ROMs so I am going to get the nexus tomorrow
GS3 is superior to GNexus (powerful cpu, better camera, and so on).. And if you can wait other GS3 roms will be developed in the next future..
If you really want to customize a lot your device I'd wait to the NEXT nexus phone
Cyanogenmod 10 is already really stable.. have you tried it? I'm using it very happily on my gs3 right now.
And hardware differences between the phones is significant.

Of course you realize you will have to unlock it if you want to sell it to most people, will lose the warranty and T-Mobile may or may not detect the change in phones on a plan where they more or less own that phone until the contract is up. Right?
If the GS3 is already coming, I probably would just hold onto it, that's just me.
The resell value will be high probably around the time the next real Nexus comes out, then make your move.

TMO has no say on which phone he has to use. He pays the subsidized price which is recouped over the length of the contract. His rate plan remains independent of his device. As far as warranty, if you're able to root then you should be able to unroot and relock your bootloader (there are ways to reset your flash count as well). Resale value will be best though if it is carrier unlocked

WRONG...
not all the components have open source drivers so very frequently you end up needing to wait for source ( or stock rather) to be realeased in order for much development to occur.

no, i was actually looking to put complete stock android on it. like on the gnex. i'm not into roms that much. i have a G2 right now and its completely stock and i like it like that. so from my understanding i won't be able to do that, so i guess i'll have to sell the S3 (unlock it first with a code from TMO) and then get the gnex.
are there really any huge differences with the hardware between gnex and s3? like am i going to really miss out on something that s3 has that gnex doesn't?
Big main differences is better processors, more memory and better camera... outside of that not much
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I have the Gnex, my husband has the T-Mo S3. I have no regrets passing on the S3. It's a nice phone, but I have stock android with no fuss whatsoever. The Gnex software outperforms the S3 without a doubt (he's just got stock TW, so I'm not sure how it would do with a nice AOSP rom)
I agree with whoever mentioned the driver issue, the GTab got ICS 9 months later, and until it was released, no ROMs had cameras working. I'll take the Nexus over anything any day of the week.
I was close to getting the gs3 as well. Specs are fine but the development community is so much better. Yes we have cm10 for the s3 but how long will it take to get the next version. You trade some things away when you pick a phone. I will trade those specs for the best softwear and best dev community

I'm due for an upgrade from my Incredible 2, which was an awesome phone with some really great devs cooking up some badass roms. I guess my question is do I switch to the gnex, which is free, or go for the sgsIII?
I need a solid device with decent battery and it's used mostly for communication. No games or anything.
Having to give up my unlimited data is making me leary about switching to any phone.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

With basic use, anything around these days will pretty much last you a solid work day, and home play time. Regarding the consideration of the nexus, if you can handle the shipping chaos right now, I'd just get the n4. I'm assuming you have a gsm carrier. Same price, longer life. Big picture all around, I'd wait to upgrade. A15's are here, and they're going to dominate the bar for standard in the near future.
Came from the same phone three weeks ago.
I dont regret it at all. I bought mine off contract so I kept my unlimited data and only paid 160 new.
The phone is way more responsive with little to no bloat, and best of all, the development is based off source and not ports.
Battery life isnt as good but thats because its a 4g phone and the screen is WAY better.
Buy either a GNex or a SGS3 off contract.

The Galaxy S3 is better than the Gnex in pretty much every way. I just don't like the design. You can't go wrong with the handset that sold more than any other handset and that would be the S3.

Every phone will have mixed reviews. I personally came from the htc inspire to a nexus, and have experienced less signal losses in my common areas.
LG N4 all the way if you can get one. Or get a used gnex on craigslist. Easy to handle if you are a ROM freaky.
I don't have the Nexus 4, but I had the S3 and Galaxy Nexus twice, between the three choices, I'm figuring:
S3 advantages:
-best front and rear camera
-best battery life
-best rear speaker
-microsd expansion
disadvantage:
-poorest built quality of the three
-will not get direct Google updates and stock android experience (unless you use custom rom of course, which still isn't compared to the quick updates and the variety of quality roms of the Nexus)
-physical/capacitive buttons (yes its a disadvantage, I said it)
If you have to ask me, I sold the Galaxy Nexus to buy the S3, then sold it and repurchased the Galaxy Nexus despite the benefits of the S3. So there is your answer. Also a used Galaxy Nexus are very cheap now.
Also you are asking in a Nexus forum, so the answer is will be the Nexus, as opposed to asking in the S3 forum.
Either of the two would be great. The main thing the Gnex(on Verizon) has on the SGSIII is that we get our Roms made from AOSP source.

I am sticking with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus they sent me for free in June.
The Nexus4 is not an option for Verizon customers and my GNexus is very nice even on stock 4.1 Jellybean. Not really sure 4.2.1 would be a real improvement.
It would be cool to play with a sgs3, maybe, but no rush. They are bound to get a lot cheaper if they really last long enough and if I never upgrade via Verizon again I can keep my unlimited data for at least the next year and a half...hopefully longer.

It's real and improved, I'm using it right now.
I do flash a lot of different roms, and having ones built from source is awesome. My dinc2 is now running JB bit with a hacked GB kernel. The dev who cooked most roms I use, Aeroevan, is a genius and is now making sgs3 ones as well. That being one reason I may go that route. The nexus seems more feasible though. Especially if I can pick one up and still keep my unlimited data. I only use about 800mb/month because I always on wifi, but I don't want to give it up. Thanks for all the tips so far.
Also, being that so many people have the sgs3, I posted this here hoping that I'd get the advice of people that were a little more experienced with their phones and the capabilities outside of what's sold to them from the provider.

on a purely hardware basis, there is no doubt the GS3 is better. GNex will only have more AOSP ROMs, but better hardware on GS3 + tons of users and a very active dev community = it will last longer. I say this as a GNex owner

Just until GS4 comes around, then the exodus will begin exactly as is happening with Gnex. I recently bought my Gnex just because GN4 was sold out, and I'm still trying to find what real benefits could I gain with these phone vs the Gnex. Better camera? It's a cellphone cam, every cellphone camera sucks big time (aberrations, noise, and so on...). More CPU, well I compare these with Windows X64 5 or 6 yrs ago, when there wasn't programs that could work with 64 bits, there are not apps using a quad core or using 2gb ram, but however, I don't know if i need to sell my recent purchase and upgrade (if it is) to a G4, just to see how in 3 months Samsung announces a new galaxy, or Sony, or anybody else.
Honestly I love the stock look of android but I can't deal with the issues that google failed with on the Nexus 4, overheating , sub-par 8MP camera, delayed pinch to zoom, This phone just looks and seems nicer. YES I realize the GS4 is announced this week but that isn't an opportunity to get it unlocked and my contract isn't up till October.
All in all, the Galaxy s3 just looks like a cooler device especially for someone like me in High School where all those camera features and motion features would be fun to play around with, Plus if I don't like it I root and then I pretty much have a Nexus 4 with a slower processor, less overheating and a better camera and screen
Do you guys think it is worth it to sell my Nexus 4 and get a Galaxy s3? I have no problem with buying the s4 down the road its just my phone isn't interesting me anymore and I'm DIEING to see what I have been missing out on with LTE.

Firstly, I would edit this post before the mods come in because discussion of trading is forbidden now, although that is a really nice trade for some people. Swappa is the official place to sell your device here now.
Secondly, it sounds like you are unhappy with your N4. I really love this device and I think it's great, but I think you'd be quite happy with a SGS3. Great battery life, LTE is wonderful, The AMOLED screen is brilliant. All of this is subjective of course. Best of luck.
Thanks for the tip
The big Screen, LTE, and being able to use a SD card is really nice, but the N4 will have better longterm support when it comes to android upgrades the nexus devices always do. I have herd goods and bads about both the gs3 and nexus as far as support though. It really is all up to you and your prefrence
Long term support is a very subjective term. Plus you get the latest OS over here if you are so keen on staying updates.
As the earlier poster mentioned, you got to weigh in many other factors too, not just support. For me, SD card, LTE and screen are important than Google updates. I tend to stick to a stable version, and this forum is the only place I look for.

I got the S4 (w/ CM10.1), coming from a galnex - couldn't be happier. If you hold the devices side-by-side the screen on the S4 simply blows the galnex out of the water hands down - I didn't know what I was missing until I saw it in person.
Oh, and 2gb of ram - apps never lag and can stay in memory as long as they please. There's no reason to fiddle with custom kernels and roms because quite frankly it's fast as **** with stock CM10.1 and the included kernel.
Do yourself a favor, and upgrade to something better than a galnex. Good phone in it's day but it's starting to feel lackluster compared to newer devices.
I would love the AOSP S4 but I use Verizon (work buys and pays my phone bill). Unfortunately I fear that the GNex might be the last CDMA device. Overall the GNex has been the best phone I've ever owned. It is super reliable. Everything just works. I've only had to pop the battery like 2-3 times since it was released. I'm on AOKP now and with the transparency settings and other basic nav/status bar tweaks, it looks simply beautiful. Hopefully the Nexus 5 hits Verizon again, but until then, I am in no rush for another.
Congrats. Real happy for you Chaos. And thx.

I'm with sprint and not have seen anything that will replace this phone. Sure I could get a one or an s4 and turn it into a "Google edition" but I really like a phone that was built specifically for stock. Having this has gotten me used to not having capacitive or physical keys, and I like it to be like that. That said stock "odexed" 4.1 and Franco's kernel has performance tits up.

Hmm i am thinking about buying a GNex...my other option is Xperia SP
Im giving more priority to GNex because of obvious reasons...
But one thing which holds me back is, is it future-proof anymore??
Dont wanna go for LG N4 since the price is bit high and some other reasons such as camera quality, glass on back (wont suit me ) and such...
So any opinions??

It'll go on after KLP, but not sure if it's with official updates, but that's what custom ROMs are for.

I thought Key Lime Pie was suppose to be for devices with lower specs?
Eg.
512mb RAM
I'd love to say there's nothing I'd like to ever change on GN running 4.1.2, but seeing how android has changed/improved in the last couple of years, it'll be very exciting to see what new ideas count out.

yes KLP is "rumoured" to be optimised for 512mb RAM devices

Even if I'm in love with the HTC one, I still can't see a possible reason to replace our nexus.
