[Q] should I come to the Galaxy s3? Nexus 4 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Honestly I love the stock look of android but I can't deal with the issues that google failed with on the Nexus 4, overheating , sub-par 8MP camera, delayed pinch to zoom, This phone just looks and seems nicer. YES I realize the GS4 is announced this week but that isn't an opportunity to get it unlocked and my contract isn't up till October.
All in all, the Galaxy s3 just looks like a cooler device especially for someone like me in High School where all those camera features and motion features would be fun to play around with, Plus if I don't like it I root and then I pretty much have a Nexus 4 with a slower processor, less overheating and a better camera and screen
Do you guys think it is worth it to sell my Nexus 4 and get a Galaxy s3? I have no problem with buying the s4 down the road its just my phone isn't interesting me anymore and I'm DIEING to see what I have been missing out on with LTE.

Firstly, I would edit this post before the mods come in because discussion of trading is forbidden now, although that is a really nice trade for some people. Swappa is the official place to sell your device here now.
Secondly, it sounds like you are unhappy with your N4. I really love this device and I think it's great, but I think you'd be quite happy with a SGS3. Great battery life, LTE is wonderful, The AMOLED screen is brilliant. All of this is subjective of course. Best of luck.

Thanks for the tip

The big Screen, LTE, and being able to use a SD card is really nice, but the N4 will have better longterm support when it comes to android upgrades the nexus devices always do. I have herd goods and bads about both the gs3 and nexus as far as support though. It really is all up to you and your prefrence

Long term support is a very subjective term. Plus you get the latest OS over here if you are so keen on staying updates.
As the earlier poster mentioned, you got to weigh in many other factors too, not just support. For me, SD card, LTE and screen are important than Google updates. I tend to stick to a stable version, and this forum is the only place I look for.

The S3 has great development so I don't think that you can go wrong with the device. I may be bias but this is the S3 forum.

I made the switch because of memory card and I got a extended battery. Battery life on the N4 was horible.

if you're looking for the touchwiz roms, start browsing and reading around in the Android Development section. Hyperdrive seems to be getting some good attention right now.

If you like a holo-like theme try mine (Intergalactic) or upndwn4par's Graviton. Honestly all of them are really good. We have many talented devs here, thank goodness, and we all work together to make things better. You'll most likely be happy with any of them you try. Make a nandroid and try a bunch!

The way we think about our nexus

When a new phone comes we all wonder, man the new htc is what I want and it has better camera, and the gps is amazing and SIRI wannabe, quad core exynos and 1080p super amoled +(this would be too much lol) ... I just want you guys to remember the we live in the best years of our lives and we don't appreciate it sometimes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r1CZTLk-Gk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Now I can say for myself that I still think galaxy nexus is the best phone in the market even tho s voice and quad core is coming out, I don't really needed and I think I won't use it(had Siri for 6 months and didn't use it much ) and I hope this help for people that always think about the next big thing.
You're right... we do live in the best years of our lives.... but its also made us too reliant on technology and a bunch of spoiled brats...
I was around for all those things he spoke of in the Video and can relate... but I guess everything is relative to every generation... Each one more spoiled then the previous.
Guess in 30 years when our cars fly themselves this generation would be like "Damn, we used to drive, uphill, bothways, on a paved road!"
Lol
Lol. This was great.

Louis is amazing, thanks for the post lol
but yeah, people expect so much and are quick to dismiss something great based off one thing they aren't attracted to... kind of sad but that's the way the world works now, its only the few that can appreciate something's significance and the rest just complain that it isn't good enough.
We gotta hand it to the 2nd group of people though, the ones who are never happy are the ones innovating and providing the rest of us with cooler things although I believe everyone should appreciate everything regardless

I stopped into the att store today and played around with the one x they had in there. Man it was beautiful in white and in grey. The fit and finish is amazing and the screen is gorgeous... looks a bit better than my GSM nexus and the look of the device was nicer as well. Too bad the rest of the experience let me down. I don't know if it was sense or what but it wasn't nearly as snappy. I know its got more muscle but it hangs in spots for some reason and browsing on it sucked! What's the point in all that beauty and horsepower when the function of the phone doesn't respond in kind? I'd love for the next nexus to be a bit more pretty in design but this thing just works. The major failure in android so far is that manufacturer customization so far has mostly detracted from the function of the phone compared to stock. The galaxy nexus, in GSM form at least is still the high bar other android phones need to measure against. I love this phone. For that, I don't think I'll have a real choice in the future between a nexus and any others. Unless a non nexus gets true stock android there will probably be something letting it down. I think the one x or others could be as good or better overall than this phone if they had just included some phone specific apps to differenciate and left everything else stock and unlocked.
Before anyone says to just put on cm or other aosp on those other devices, unless they are unlocked and have drivers available, they tend to have things missing or unstable when going stock android.

It hit me the other day that I've actually had this phone for almost half a year. It still feels brand new to me, and I marvel at how fresh it still feels with minimal maintenance.
My GS1, Desire HD, and Focus never quite ticked all the boxes, and I had to jump through hoops to get them to operate how I wanted then to. My one and only wish is for the next Nexus to be Note-sized (I pretty much only read books on my phone now). That's not happening, so I'm as pleased with the Nexus as I'll ever be with a phone.

People buy these new phones with the intention of rooting and running a vanilla rom. We have it right outta the box. No limitations. Galaxy nexus is sonning all other phones. Screw hardware. That software...ftw

Is it worth buying a Nexus today?

Hello,
How are you?
As I have said in previous threads, I currently have a Galaxy Note.
I am wanting to switch to a bit smaller phone with better handling with one hand on the go.
I've though about the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3, but I think the support in regard to updates is just slow.
So, I am thinking about a Nexus.
My question is with the Nexus running older, is it still worth the purchase today? It is a fairly bit cheaper than the S3 or HOX.
ALso, the camera is an important feature to me.
I don't carry dedicated cameras with me no more, so I rely on my phone to take some casual snaps.
How is the camera on the Nexus in comparison to my Note, in regard to general image quality?
Hope you can help me out.
Thank you.
Best wishes.

If I were you, I would wait a month or two to see which handsets that will be released.
The spec's on the Nexus is 9 months old so it is not the best out there anymore in regards to hardware, but it is without comparison the best handset when it comes to updates and community support.
The camera on the phone is OK, not the best out there but it manages for my use. I don't know how it compares to the Note's camera since i've never tried it.
if the camera is important to you and is a higher priority rather than the software updates I'd go with something newer. Having gone from a GS2 to a GNex I can say the picture quality is down and is noticeable. I'm guessing they use the same 8mp sensor in the Note as the GS2
I have the post-ban Gnex GSM.
In the last year, I've used One X (awesome screen, awesome camera, but that's it. Sence is stupid), Nokia 900 (awesome hardware, meh camera, meh screen, terrible app store), GS3 (awesome everything except touch wiz), Galaxy Note (hate touch wiz, good camera, good screen, unique), and of course the iPhone 4S.
Today, when my friends ask what phone to get, I direct them to GS3. I'm not a fan of touch wiz, but it's hard to deny the awesome hardware that thing has in it.
If you put the Gnex software with the S3 hardware, you would have the best phone in the world today. For me, software is more important than hardware which is why I support the nex.
Yes, it's worth it.

Thank you all for the replies.
Is the Nexus too much of a downgrade in terms of hardware from my Note?
Also, If I install a rom like CM10 on my Note, I will almost get that stock ICS feel on the note, or even an S3, right?
Those kinds of roms are not that much ate in time after the original Google updates, are they?
Cheers!
The Nexus is always worth it especially for development.
The Nexus is always the way to go if you like flashing ROMs.
No jelly bean for Verizon or sprint Gnex yet. International s3 getting official jelly bean next week. S3 over Gnex was an easy decision for me.

I own the Nexus VZW and S3. I prefer the S3 for the hardware but I love the nexus for roms. I will probably flash the S3 today.
When it's said that the nexus is better to install customs ROMs, what is the difference from a HOX or S3?
Does the nexus have a bigger development community and better support?
Cheers

Official nothing. You buy a Nexus to have the choice to not wait for the carries. All versions of the Galaxy Nexus have stock and custom ROMs built on 4.1.1 source. I run stock 4.1.1 on my Sprint Galaxy Nexus and it runs just as well as any other.
Development on a Nexus device is always easier than any other, has more potential, and a larger development community. Your GS3 may see 4.1.1 but may get left in the dust for the next version while my Nexus will remain up-to-date, regardless of whether the "carrier" releases it or not.

I went from the Note to the Nexus yesterday. I realised that the Nexus is a better size for me but the Note lives on with my wife and it is an awesome peice of kit. Also for me as much as I messed around with TW roms I always craved vanilla Android. The problem is that CM and AOKP always had issues despite the devs hard work. My advice to the OP is to buy the GNex now and swap it next year for a new Nexus next year when prices of those have dropped. That's what I will be doing. In 23 months of Android I have had 6 different phones, but this is easier to do in GSM land.

Can you please give me your impression of the camera on both phones? Is it a dramatic difference?
Also, any kind of regrets on the swap?

To the OP- I have both phones. I got the G note at the beginning of the year, but switched to tmobile and it was not too reliable then. I got the G nexus 2 months ago and love the smaller size.
I have recently gotten to test out both cameras with the ustream app- Trying to catch a mouse popping out of my stove- Arghhhh!!!!
This ustream app sends out the camera as a live feed to your computer. I used both phones on 2 different nites. I am sorry to say there is a significant difference. The G Note is a great picture. The G nexus is a step down in clarity. I can't say its blurry, but there are more details shown with the g Note. In still pictures, it seems to be fine. I wouldn't have known the difference is I didn't see it with my own eyes.
I now switch off between the phones. the radio problem has been fixed for the note on tmobile. I really love my Note, but at times the Gnex is more practical to carry around. I was able to sell an old iphone and infuse to pay for my gnex, so I could keep both
Tough decision! Good Luck!
Sorry I have not had enough experience yet with the GNex camera, but that is not so important to me and my wife can take the pictures on the Note. No regrets for me.

^^^ This is the chief reason why I kept my Sprint Galaxy Nexus rather than returning it before my 14 days were up.
I still have my HTC EVO 4G LTE, but love the Nexus. I find it much more appealing design and it feels better to hold for long calls that I can't use speakerphone on. I consider myself to be very demanding of my phones and, like every other handset I have had, I have found things with the Nexus that need to be tweaked to my liking. This is the best part of this phone. I can do that if I dig into it and learn about the design and programming. Lack of carrier "sh_tware" is an extra bonus, but that can be removed from any rooted phone with TB.

Should I or shouldn't I?

I'm due for an upgrade from my Incredible 2, which was an awesome phone with some really great devs cooking up some badass roms. I guess my question is do I switch to the gnex, which is free, or go for the sgsIII?
I need a solid device with decent battery and it's used mostly for communication. No games or anything.
Having to give up my unlimited data is making me leary about switching to any phone.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

With basic use, anything around these days will pretty much last you a solid work day, and home play time. Regarding the consideration of the nexus, if you can handle the shipping chaos right now, I'd just get the n4. I'm assuming you have a gsm carrier. Same price, longer life. Big picture all around, I'd wait to upgrade. A15's are here, and they're going to dominate the bar for standard in the near future.
Came from the same phone three weeks ago.
I dont regret it at all. I bought mine off contract so I kept my unlimited data and only paid 160 new.
The phone is way more responsive with little to no bloat, and best of all, the development is based off source and not ports.
Battery life isnt as good but thats because its a 4g phone and the screen is WAY better.
Buy either a GNex or a SGS3 off contract.

The Galaxy S3 is better than the Gnex in pretty much every way. I just don't like the design. You can't go wrong with the handset that sold more than any other handset and that would be the S3.

LG Nexus 4 obviously is the best right now if you need a new phone, but for someone like me who already owns a galaxy nexus it isn't worth upgrading to a N4 as it runs the same JB 4.2.1 OS with the exact same jellybean features an just as smooth.

Every phone will have mixed reviews. I personally came from the htc inspire to a nexus, and have experienced less signal losses in my common areas.
LG N4 all the way if you can get one. Or get a used gnex on craigslist. Easy to handle if you are a ROM freaky.
I don't have the Nexus 4, but I had the S3 and Galaxy Nexus twice, between the three choices, I'm figuring:
S3 advantages:
-best front and rear camera
-best battery life
-best rear speaker
-microsd expansion
disadvantage:
-poorest built quality of the three
-will not get direct Google updates and stock android experience (unless you use custom rom of course, which still isn't compared to the quick updates and the variety of quality roms of the Nexus)
-physical/capacitive buttons (yes its a disadvantage, I said it)
If you have to ask me, I sold the Galaxy Nexus to buy the S3, then sold it and repurchased the Galaxy Nexus despite the benefits of the S3. So there is your answer. Also a used Galaxy Nexus are very cheap now.
Also you are asking in a Nexus forum, so the answer is will be the Nexus, as opposed to asking in the S3 forum.
Either of the two would be great. The main thing the Gnex(on Verizon) has on the SGSIII is that we get our Roms made from AOSP source.

I am sticking with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus they sent me for free in June.
The Nexus4 is not an option for Verizon customers and my GNexus is very nice even on stock 4.1 Jellybean. Not really sure 4.2.1 would be a real improvement.
It would be cool to play with a sgs3, maybe, but no rush. They are bound to get a lot cheaper if they really last long enough and if I never upgrade via Verizon again I can keep my unlimited data for at least the next year and a half...hopefully longer.

It's real and improved, I'm using it right now.
I do flash a lot of different roms, and having ones built from source is awesome. My dinc2 is now running JB bit with a hacked GB kernel. The dev who cooked most roms I use, Aeroevan, is a genius and is now making sgs3 ones as well. That being one reason I may go that route. The nexus seems more feasible though. Especially if I can pick one up and still keep my unlimited data. I only use about 800mb/month because I always on wifi, but I don't want to give it up. Thanks for all the tips so far.
Also, being that so many people have the sgs3, I posted this here hoping that I'd get the advice of people that were a little more experienced with their phones and the capabilities outside of what's sold to them from the provider.

on a purely hardware basis, there is no doubt the GS3 is better. GNex will only have more AOSP ROMs, but better hardware on GS3 + tons of users and a very active dev community = it will last longer. I say this as a GNex owner

Just until GS4 comes around, then the exodus will begin exactly as is happening with Gnex. I recently bought my Gnex just because GN4 was sold out, and I'm still trying to find what real benefits could I gain with these phone vs the Gnex. Better camera? It's a cellphone cam, every cellphone camera sucks big time (aberrations, noise, and so on...). More CPU, well I compare these with Windows X64 5 or 6 yrs ago, when there wasn't programs that could work with 64 bits, there are not apps using a quad core or using 2gb ram, but however, I don't know if i need to sell my recent purchase and upgrade (if it is) to a G4, just to see how in 3 months Samsung announces a new galaxy, or Sony, or anybody else.

Switch between nexus and gs3, need advise.

I won a free galaxy s3 for Christmas through my job(sprint) but i currently have a galaxy nexus. I'm torn between the two. The gs3 has more ram and a faster processor but little to no support for 4.2. Im addicted to 4.2 and most the ROMs for the gs3 or in some form based on touchwiz which i absolutely hate. From a quick look the ROMs based on aosp or cm10 are either still in the early stages of beta or not enough attention is given to developer or his work to motivate for further development. I guess im just spoiled by such a broad range of choices with nexus devices that I'm having to come here to ask for advise or input on what you guys think about the gs3 as a daily phone vs the gnex.

Here's how I see the Dev community in both:
The Galaxy Nexus has tons of AOSP based roms. That's it.
The Galaxy S III has a ton a TW based roms and the beginnings of AOSP based roms.
Your choice.

For a note 2 it would be a no brainer, but the s3 is already quite old and not that much of an upgrade over your phone. I'd sell the s3 while the prices are still high.

Thanks guys. That pretty much exactly what i was looking for. I figured it would make for a quick buck.
I just wish the nexus 4 was available on sprint I've got an upgrade coming up and the only option i see as of now is the optimus g

If you don't care for the optimus g, save your upgrade for something better...possibly the galaxy s4

I'd say at this point in time of you can handle the wait you should wait for 1080p devices. 720 is more than adequate but just like the jump from 30 to 60fps there is a difference.
Your gonna hate that button home xD

We don't know yet one of the big unknowns: Given that 720p reduces the screen on time, what's the battery life gonna be like with 1080p?

Pixels have nothing (or at least very little)to do with it its the display size, brightness and tech that affect battery life. Resolution is unchanging.

But the GPU needs more juice to push more pixels. Granted that they are using smaller nm scales for SoCs now which means more performance for less power however the extra effort for the resolution could negate this. Let's hope you're right and at worst battery life stays the same!

I guess im just spoiled by such a broad range of choices with nexus devices that I'm having to come here to ask for advise or input on what you guys think about the gs3 as a daily phone vs the gnex.

if you don't mind changing ROM everyday or have the latest go SIII.. otherwise gnex is still the best choice
My nexus performs MUCH better than the GS3 ever did for me, granted, I was on T-Mobile, but Touchwiz and 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 are dreadful. I got a ton of FCs on the GS3 as well.

To Galaxy S3 or not to Galaxy S3, that is the question.

So I found an S3 is decent used condition on eBay for 400. Being the impulse buyer I am, I went ahead and ordered it. Right now I'm running stock deodexed 4.2.2 with Franco and some minimal mods. I'm liking it a lot, but I've heard so much about the s3 and its awfully hyped. Is it worth it? Is it that much better a device than the nexus?
Opinions are appreciated.

Depends, although for the most part S3 is better, and in some part it's WAY better (Battery life comes into mind), but if you like AOSP, the G-nex is a better choice, since AOSP support for the S3 (The quad Intl. Variant) is pretty much abysmal, at least until Samsung cooperates and fleece the much needed Exynos documentation.
But yeah, the S3 is far better in most part, the only flaws I can think of is the fact it's hideous, lack of software buttons, and the way Samsung still thinks menu button is still necessary (Recent button is easy more useful IMO). But those are minor annoyance.
I'd say go for the S3.
If it's good hardware you want, s3 is great. Everything else about it is terrible IMHO.

S3 is better in many parts (performance, storage, battery life ..) ,but I advice you to wait until the release of the S4. Prices will fall anyway
Thank you all for the opinions. I think I will run them one day on and one day off, nexus then s3, nexus then s3 and so on and SK fourth. I appreciate y'all taking the time to give me some input

Should have checked craigslist for a cheaper buy & or maybe waited for the S4. I personally like the S3.

probably so, but I tried that and I live in a small town so whenever an S3 or Note 2 gets posted for a good price, its gone immediately and I can never catch it

and to add, I ordered a t-mobile S3. I don't like the quad version compared to the gnex on paper. It doesn't seem much better and I've heard terrible things about it lol
