[Q] Restore to stock onces in a while? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Is it a good idea to restore to stock once in a while to keep things running smoothly? I have had a GS3 for about three months and average a rom update/change every two weeks. I've even been running CM-based (AOSP and AOKP) roms so much that I have trouble telling stock runners how to do things. So, are there any advantages? If so, how often and what are the advantages?

I don't see any reason to, unless you start seeing weirdness and need to rule out a hardware defect

[Q] What makes ICS worth the risk to you?

Hey guys. I'm just coming to the 4g touch after hard bricking my Fascinate. I'm a little hesitant to flash an ICS rom on this thing after the brick. From what I'm reading here it seems ICS roms on this phone are even less stable than they are on the Fascinate and causing a lot of hard bricks.
Really the only differences I noticed in ICS were the ability to pull down the notifications bar from the lock screen(which I absolutely loved) and the panorama camera option which can be had using Camera ICS. Is there something else I'm missing?
With better battery life, better performance and stability in GB, what brings you to ICS prior to source being released?

The risk of bricking has been minimized through the hard work of our Devs and programming community. If you thoroughly read and follow posted installation instructions you aren't likely to brick.
People mainly brick when they get in a rush, or try and take short cuts or simply disregard posted instructions.
There are plenty of enhancements in ICS over GB, I'd suggest people flash a ROM and explore them for yourself. Just read, read, read and ask questions before you ever take any step you are unsure of.
I'll agree with Esoteric68 here. She's spot on about the 'brick' issue. Do you research before you do anything!
As to the why of it? This is xda developers the people here tend to be into tweaking (in the non-meth sense) with technology and like to ride the bleeding edge of technology or squeeze out the most from the old stuff.
I've like the ICS builds for some of the items you've mentioned. Plus I get to stay ahead of the curve, as it where with my technology. Myself I've only had one application that won't support ICS and found another one to supplant it. I like the smoothness and tweaks I can do with ICS.
There are some really great developers here and some awesome ROMs to play with. Just, as already mentioned, read 1st and be careful.
I was scared to flash ICS for a couple months because it wasn't official but I've done my research like everyone says to do. I can't tell you how many times I've flashed ICS roms this past week, not one scare. Just read up and do as the devs say and you'll be good. If you're not sure, ask questions.
I've got the same question as the op roughly. I know that it isn't much of a risk flashing ICS nowadays, but am wondering what in ICS was worth it for people to make the change. I've looked around and don't see too many features really that I don't see in GB so i feel like i'm missing something.
I'm also one who appreciates all the work the devs do to put together these roms for all of us with all the tweaks they put in. Like I mentioned I'm just now waiting to get my 4g touch in the mail tomorrow after bricking my Fascinate. I had been running a number of ICS roms on my Fassy prior to the brick and while I loved playing with them it seemed like the tweaks the devs put into the roms were unrelated to the actual update of the OS. I had been flashing roms for that phone since the early Froyo days so I had thought I had a pretty good idea of what I was doing and always read the proper way to flash things but then one fateful day I tried to flash the latest MIUI coming from MIUI 1.2.9 and ended up with a bootloop, I think I forgot to wipe date/cache. No problem I thought, this has happened before, just ODIN stock and start over. But then something went terribly wrong in ODIN and now I'm left with a phone that won't turn on, won't charge and comes up as "unrecognized" on my pc. If I could just get it into download mode I could save it but I haven't been able to. Now it's got me a little more cautious of what I flash and how often I'll be flashing.
Maybe the devs can answer this since they know more about insides of the OS. Are there things you can modify in ICS that were not possible in GB?
There is a very long and technical thread about the ICS 'super bricking' issue here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644364
Basically Sammy screwed the pooch with the way ICS kernels make(s) calls to wipe partitions, particularly the EMMC controller.
It's actually a 'hard coded' firmware thing. But since it is firmware, it should be fixable via a firmware flash. It's just we don't really have that code access from Sammy and they seem to be dragging their feet on this.
There are even OTA updates in Europe (France primarily) that are superbricking a load of Galaxy Notes!
sfhub, Entropy512, garwynn and others with way more skills than most are on it. Esoteric68, robertm2011 and a few others took the risk and spent the time to test the workarounds and fixes that were put together. And you'll see from all the activity here that if caution is used you can pretty safely flash away. Since I've had time this week I've actually flashed about 8 different ROMs and restored nandroids too.
Just keep in mind to read the OPs of any ROM and follow their flashing instructions, read the 'how not to brick' stickies etc.
sfhub, chris41g and Agat put together some great 'safe' kernels.
If you're truly worried you can always use sfhub's one-click to get you to a stock FF18 build - kernel, ROM and modem at one shot.
ICS builds are really quite different in the structure to GB. So yes, as a developer, there are a few more things you can do. It's just a matter of figuring out where things are.
Good luck and have fun!
my location services and gps were horrendous with the el29 update, on ICS its soooooo much better, that made it worth the risk to me
I read and read and read and read a little more until I no longer saw it as a risk. It became more of a "why not?" Now that I have experienced ICS I will never go back. I really like the streamlined multitasking. I think that is the prominent feature. :cyclops:
The old adage is: Don't fly higher than your willing to fall.
In this situation, practice techniques, development and ROMs on a device you're not afraid of bricking. Consider it a "tool of the trade". The OLED phones are starting to appear in pawn shops for little money.
I have asurion insurance and am trying to find a reason to use it so I didn't waste my money

By far my favorite feature is the swipe away notifications. The few times I have been back on GB that was the first thing that bothered me. I can never go back. Especially after tasting AOSP. TouchWiz is trash for me. I suggest you try CM9 or AOKP. Both excellent ROMs with great support right now. There are many more reasons why ICS is superior, depending on preference I suppose, but the bottom line is at this point, with safe recoveries being released, your chance of bricking are I'd say slim provided you follow instructions. I have flashed probably 40 Roms over the last few months. Only time I soft bricked was cause I tried to cowboy up and not follow directions...

I'm confused. Whats the risk?
ICS is dead simple to install if you know how to read.
(genuinely curious seeing as i've had ICS (in different forms) on my E4GT since it was possible. Currently on CM9.)
Yep I echo everyone's advice. Ask questions!
I got the phone a month ago and remember starting a thread asking a ton of questions and I got all the help I needed.
Flashing roms and the terminology (had never heard of Odin) was completely different from the last phone I had, so I am glad I did my homework before taking the plunge.

It is safe to flash ICS using ODIN and the newer recoveries. FF18 should be safe, I used it a few times, el26 is the recommend kernel/recovery to flash any cwm zip with as far as anything that includes wiping partitions.
Just remember ODIN ODIN ODIN!
Flash ICS based roms at your own risk, stay away from wipe data/factory reset on any ICS rom until it has been confirmed working on new roms. When using other ICS roms and you are not sure, DO NOT FACTORY RESET OR WIPE DATA. USE ODIN TO GET BACK TO A SAFE KERNEL.

HELP
Can anyone tell me if it is safe to install a build version of ICS to my already flashed epic 4g touch? Any help its greatly appreciated!
Thanks
ICS isn't where you get in trouble. Its going back to gb or doing a factory reset wipe. Use calks wipe all instead of using wipes in an ICS recovery and you will be golden. Read the how not to brick my phone thread if you are really paranoid.

Important questions regarding ROMs

I plan to purchase a Wind Mobile galaxy s3 tomorrow and I was wondering about the compatibility it will have with ROMs.
I have heard many different things but from what I gather it is that Wind phones are compatible with T-Mobile Roms except for the ones that include things to do with radio. I don't fully understand what this means but I hope I can get a further understanding from the community's response to this thread.
I am not sure if the Nightly even comes with a radio. If it doesn't I heard people saying it would work as long as the rom does not come with the radio. I have no idea what all this means. I hope someone can clarify
The plan I have is to buy the Wind S3 and flash CM10 Nightly straight away with the Lean Kernel. Will it work? If not, is there a way for me to fix it?
Thank you :fingers-crossed:
hey
BUMP!
Looks like people need some encouraging to answer my question
Yes the CM10 nightly will work for you ROMs and radios are mostly kept separate so you don't have to worry about that.

Patience! Its only been a few hours. Ive seen threads go for a day or two before getting answered. Just a matter of when the right person comes across it.
To answer, yes you can flash our roms, but no you cannot use our radios. I'd recommend backing up your current one in case of accidents.
Cm10 should be fine but unless its been addressed expect somewhat slow data speeds and a few other bugs.
Stock on this phone is fantastic believe it or not! So give that a fair run too.
As far as kernel, just make sure the one you use is compatible with CM.
CM roms dont include radios. Most roms dont if they are flashable in cwm or twrp. Be careful if you're using an odin flashable as many do include the radio.

Could you go in to more details about this subject? I do not understand why the data would slow down.
Thanks
Im not sure what the cause is but ive heard a lot of people complain about slow data with cm10, mostly in the modem threads. Udated modems helped for some but not much I dont think. Only other thing ive heard is that its a known issue but the cm team had no plans to address it until they have a stable release.
I haven't kept up with development on cm so you will be able to find much more and up to date info in their thread.

For me, everything works, but keep in mind I DO NOT USE THE STOCK APPS...worthless email/gmail/message. I use Handcent, and K9 email. They work perfect. I uninstall all stock apps on every rom I load, the only bug I see is screen flicker ( which has a fix), the only thing I do not like is when charging and screen is off, no led, so I never know when it is complete on the charge other than using a prog that sounds when charge is complete....I like the nightly's. I flash update every night. Also using AnTuTu speed test, I get high 9000's on the benchmark, my friggin phone IS FAST!!!!

Sorry but I may be leaving the root community for good

I've suspected for a long time that custom ROMs have been the source of all my frustrations with the Gnex. I unlocked and rooted on the first day and even though there wasn't much in the way of custom Roms with 4.0 I was excited to try all the different mods that were slowly flooding XDA and RootzWiki.
This wasn't my 1st experience with root either. I owned the Dinc and loved the idea of tinkering with my device. I learned a lot. Mainly that you should ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP. and take the extra minute to wipe everything. I don't even use TI backup anymore because I wanted to start over from scratch any time I flashed a new ROM.
I say this because I know there are ppl in the forums that are smarter than I when it comes to Android. There are also some of those same ppl that will assume that I made some sort of noob mistake and I should try "wiping data" or something. Trust me, I've tried that and it doesn't fix it.
My main issues have been:
*losing data connection for no reason and eventually having to reboot in order to restore data.
*Weak network/WiFi.
Now I know there is a thread on rootz that addresses the bars and how inaccurate they are. But when two identical devices sit down in the same place and run speed test. My Gnex can slow to a snails pace at times. The wierdest thing about this is that it only seems to do it sporadically, which makes recreating it almost impossible. Although it seems most frequent at work, but that maybe because I spend an ungodly amount of time at my office.
*Lag/freezes
I know its not gonna work perfectly all the time and sometimes you have to reboot your phone just to give it a chance to reset itself and that's cool but when you do that and it doesn't fix the sluggishness of the phone then I feel there is a problem.
* problems with certain system functions like Bluetooth or GPS
Now this may be only an issue with particular Roms which may be known to have problems with certain aspects of the system. For instance, it seems pretty common from what I've seen on the forums that GPS is an issue for some on 4.2. I was actually on 4.2 this morning until I went to punch in an address from a text msg to Navigation and it wouldn't lock on my location. I got frustrated and decided to wipe and install the AOKP milestone I had saved and when I set everything back up guess what? Navigation still wouldn't lock on. I ended up having to bail out on some guys because I could find there house. I got home and found a stock ROM online. I wiped, flashed and setup my phone for the second time today. I downloaded Maps and immediately went to find the address and it was insane how fast it locked on a location.
There are other issues but I'm becoming long winded so I'll try to wrap it up.
Now I'm not one to dismiss my own part in my problems. I've certainly tried to address them when/if they arise with what little knowledge I have and the ability to learn what I can. I e emailed devs amd talked to others and sometimes it helps, but sometimes like this morning you just want things to work when you need them to without wasting your time having to revert to a nandroid or doing some other wizardry.
"Well, why don't you just go buy an iPhone then?" you might say
I've actually contemplated it but I do really like android, Google Maps are the **** (I depend on Navigation a lot )and I like to be able to customize. And I also don't really want to pay the money to terminate my contract so I'm kinda just stuck. But I thought about doing one thing.
A couple weeks ago, I unrooted and relocked my phone and flashed stock images for JB on CDMA and from there all I did was unlock and root keeping it stock and I tell you I glad I did because all my problems no longer seem to exist. My battery life might not be what I was getting on 4.2 these last couple days but I think I'm willing to stick with this for now until Verizon gets off their ass and pushes an update to us.
I'm not trying to rant to the Dev community or complain that y'all aren't living up to my satisfaction. Hell, maybe somebody might have a solution I haven't tried yet. I'm just putting this out there in case someone was having the same trouble and could get some help.

On ParanoidAndroid 2.54 + franco.kernel r300. None of the problems you mentioned are present or has ever happened with me. Perhaps if you didn't mod your phone so much as to NOT be able to pinpoint a problem is where you went wrong.
Who knows? I surely don't. Don't know you but I don't think I'll be noticing your absence. Good luck with everything!

Stock is the way to go, but you don't have to leave the xda because you no longer run a custom ROM. there is a lot of useful information that is shared here that doesn't necessarily apply to custom ROM.
I am also running stock rom from now on.

I see how you feel abouyt this. I have had issues as well. It really stems from what Roms are and what we expect from them. The term Night lies have lost a little bit of its worry recently because they are fairly bug free. But that doesn't mean that little tweaks and mods aren't killing battery life and deteriorate over time due to bad patches and coding.
That said I would highly recommend checking out BuglessBeast. They are not night lies by any means. They are highly stable AOSP Roms that perform much better then anything else on the market. He has few commits aside from under the hood tweaks. Reboot menu, emoji and a slight few other things are it. I have never had an issue with them and recommend checking them out. Also they are pretty much the only VZW app compatible ROM. Peter has been building BuglessBeast since Eclair on the Droid1 (almost 3 years now). Always providing an excellent experience.

Stock + root is the way to go for me on Nexus phones. On my last non Nexus (SGS3) I was always flashing new roms trying to look for something that just works, but I am tired of it. On my Nexus S and GNexus, stock rom is amazing, I don't need anything else.
automaddux said:

I'm with this guy as well... I upgraded to a stock 4.2 rom (with root, but not a custom build).. and I have been smooth sailing since. It seems with all these custom roms and kernels there are nothing but issues. Sure, they're a TAD faster or offer little tweaks but when you need to use your device in the real world and it f*cking reboots while navigating somewhere because of a stupid tweak you made.. well, I can't see why it's even needed.
This phone runs very well with Stock+Root. I normally root devices because of different apps I like to use, and the ability to make custom backups...but I dont normally try anything bleeding edge...lol.
Partly because of my experience on an HTC phone...hated Sense and bought the GNex because of the AOSP.

No need to bash the custom roms that some devs here work so hard to make, i agree that stock is amazing but android would be a boring scene without the custom roms out there
We would just be like Ios, Wp and blackberry users, stuck with what we've got
Others wouldnt even have the chance to use a newer OS version because their phone has been abandoned by official support.
Or many of u guys would have crappy colors or other issues that custom roms and kernels DID fix
I use stock but i love the fact that there are custom roms around

No I get that, it's good to see support for older devices but c'mon have you counted the amount of 4.1.2 roms that are available for the gnex? If I build android I'm automatically called a developer? Because that's the way it seems here...
I don't know why people keep bringing up the so crappy colors. In reality, the crappy colors are the ones custom ROM offer.

its the kernels that offer the colors(the kernels that the ROM developers include too). of all the kernels available, only a very few distinguish themselves from the stock crappy colors.
This is ridiculous... who obligated you to install a custom ROM? F*cking emos.

[Q] Where we stand on AOSP?

Basically, I was wondering where we stand in terms of perfectly stable 4.4.2 AOSP builds. I have seen posts saying that there are issues with the LS980 variant in particular, and I am a bit uneasy where we will be down the road, not just for KitKat. Basically, will we get screwed and not be able to go further unofficially(because I fully expect LG to not update past 4.4.X, because it's LG)? I see builds being attempted with 4.4.2 source, but apparently the LS980 will not boot on the newer source. I am contemplating switching to a Nexus 5, as I find myself using AOSP exclusively, but the G2 is better in almost every conceivable way. It's been awkwardly silent for a couple weeks now, so any updates to report? I'm not looking for an ETA, just a possible confirmation of progress. I just want to know if I need to entertain the idea of getting a N5. :silly: Thanks!

Sure, except for the poor audio quality, random reboots, system lockups, GPS issues, some apps not working with touchscreen, etc.....
So yeah, except for all AOSP ROMs being completely unstable and borderline unusable, they're pretty solid.

had better audio quality on cm11 than stock 4.2.2, my phone never randomly rebooted, never locked up unless i caused it..... never had these issues.. so i guess i was one of the lucky ones?

Got any proof of that? everything's been 100% working here. Even FM works great with Spirit 2.

From a well-known dev:
"Like most kitkat roms actions from superuser / power up bluetooth *can* cause lag until you screen off and on.
D802 and VS980 have reboot issues like every other rom. Please do not report this or ask other users if they also get them, its a well known issue." - dr87
Audio issues can be found in literally every single ROM thread, I wasn't wasting more of my time finding quotes.
Every AOSP ROM has these issues, period. Whether or not you get them is a roll of the dice, but saying they don't exist shows how out-of-touch with the community you really are. Maybe try learning about the device you use, and know what you're talking about before you attack other members of the community. If I'm wrong fine, tell me I'm wrong, I'll respect and understand that. But when 5 minutes of searching generates all that "proof", much less what has been documented since August, it shows that you clearly would rather attack others than educate yourself.

It depends, LiquidSmooth has been stable for me recently, I got two freezes 2 weeks ago, but none since. Touch screen is borked for certain apps on all AOSP ROMs though, regardless. All ROMs have these issues, but it varies on the severity. I have personally never had stable GPS on ANY AOSP ROM since I got the phone on release day(November 8th), and I've tried every ROM available for the LS980.
These issues are supposed to be fixed in newer ROMs incorporating 4.4.2 kernel source, but the LS980 is struggling to boot said source, from what I understand. Check out houstonn's PA 4.0 or dr87's Mahdi, both are testing builds with newer source, and all these issues are apparently fixed. :good:

link 2: an uber *tiny* minority that could just as easily not like 4.4.x
link 3: very old thread, doesn't reflect current CM11 roms
link 4: not relevant, this is the sprint section and I see almost no CM11/AOSP mentions there. Last AOSP mention was in December... aka: doubly not relevant
link 5: very not relevant as that's a VZW G2 and not a sprint one. (this is the SPRINT section afterall) Doubly not relevant due to mentions in the thread you linked to mentioning the vzw G2 is the crippled version.

I was going to continue to defend, but then I thought, "why?" I'll leave you with something equally irrational.
"Walrus pancakes taste good with maple syrup."
Blocked.

I am thinking in either selling this or just update to official

I haven't been able to fully take advantage of my rooted phone and I get tired of re reading and trying to use other roms and doing back up and always finding myself clueless and returning here to ask you guys what where the steps by steps guide.
I can't get another phone yet because I have a contract with AT&T and it will take a few more months.
I am using SlimBean rom probably a very old version and I haven't update it yet and well I get many bugs and other issues such as my pho0ne restarting when playing videos on full screen.
Sometimes I feel desperate and just want to restart from scratch and unroot the phone by installing the latest update of the official phone.
So, the phone is practically unscratched and well taken cared if any of you are interested.
Suggestions are welcome.

Have you tried going to Swappa.com? You'd probably get a better selling price there than on places like that online auction site. Plus you don't pay any fees and it's the XDA recommended option for buying and selling phones.
Seriously though, you may want to revert to a full stock ROM to fix the performance issues. Reverting to a stock ROM would often let you know if any performance issues are firmware or hardware based as different custom ROMs often come with their peculiar issues.
