iPad 4 GPU performance is a killer ... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

First of all, before you all flame me as Apple fanboy and like to troll ...
I am Android devotee, I use and own HTC Desire, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 ... And soon, I will buy Nexus 4 ...
I admit, that I own iPad 2, but that's for my wife and kid.
Yesterday, I read this:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6426/ipad-4-gpu-performance-analyzed-powervr-sgx-554mp4-under-the-hood
To my surprise, even the new Nexus 10, powered by mighty Exynos 5 + Mali T604 is lagging behind the iPad4, iPad3, and iPhone 5 in terms of GPU performance.
Do you think in the future that non-Apple tech can catch up? I followed every Android flagship devices, and all were/are behind the iFruit ones.
This just to think about, nothing serious as I won't ever buy iFruit device. Android OS is much superior.

Wow that's a really mature reply. You call user above a troll just because he stated the obvious? He didn't say anything bad about android devices. Benchmarks don't say everything but they obviously say something.

Yeah i see them, the GPU performance absolutely incredible, but lets see how nexus 4 perform, i see optimus G's benchmark score slightly better than iphone 5 in some point,i assumed nexus 4 has more optimized software, it should be better than optimus G.

In defense of the Nexus 10, it is pushing a lot of pixels. If it had some crap screen like a lot of other tablets it might do better.

I would love to see how these A5/A6 processors perform with android (of course optimized software). Let's say Nexus 4 with S4 running android 4.2 and Nexus 4 running 4.2 but with A5/A6 CPU on the other hand. I am really curious how would this comparison look. I am not suggesting anything, I just assume that the difference could be noticeably lower. It's really hard to believe that apple's CPU/GPUs perform 2.5 times faster than the competition.

To me, what was missing in Android tablets, the major point compared to an iPad before, was a high-res screen.
Now that the Nexus 10 has it, and that there's no touchwiz sh*t on it, I think it will be very smooth and that it would be a great iPad-killer
I was just shocked when using a friend's G Tab 2 10.1 under ICS, bought a week before, few apps installed and the launcher was already laggy !

The GPU isn't Apple tech - it's Imagination Technology's! Any CPU manufacturer can licence their GPU should they choose to do so.

Lets reiterate this.
Nexus 10 internals would straight up smack the iPad silly at same resolution anyway. Not that it has ANYTHING to due with the Galaxy Nexus.

Beatiful game indeed. I'm a fan already.
Checked GPU performance vs the S2.
It is slightly worse than the S2, but that does not mean that
it is bad.

Certainly not killing the phone at all. Just because it isn't the latest GPU on the market, doesn't mean it's not good at what it does.
The GNEX GPU is fine. I have yet to find a game that struggles to run.
thanks man. you cut stone from my heart
another beat the dead horse topic but i'll kick it again. i think google picked the best gpu for this phone for all the right reasons. i there are 2? better gpu's currently and soon if not already a 3rd? the ps vita is about to come out with sgx 543mp4, which has 4 cores, compared to the iphone4s/ipad2's 543mp2 of only 2 cores. look at how awesome the battery life is of the nexus compared to many many other androids and the iphone 4s. i think it has a lot to do with the whole package, including OMAP"s superb SOC, but the 543mp2 would've been overkill and a battery hog. heck the 543mp2 is overkill for the iphone.

will the next nexus use ti 4470 cpu?

the question is, there is really an upcoming NEW nexus?
usually a nexus come to show a new version of android..JB already make is debut with the nexus 7
i don't think there will be an other android version this year..so probably no new nexus, but just a galaxy nexus plus (latest rumors) same as the actual but with a 8mpx camera and a 1.5ghz cpu (omap 4460/70)
It'd be boring if we didn't get a new one but if we do I don't think it'll be anything A9 based. I'd hope for Omap5 or Snapdragon S4Pro quad.
I think there will only be a next Nexus when there's a new version of Android.... We already had JB with the Nexus 7...
I think we won't have anything new towards the end of this year....
Maybe the (rumor) improved Galaxy Nexus+ ? With 4470?
For a NEW Nexus phone, it will probably use a quad-core processor...
Hope for an OMAP5.

You guys are insane for thinking they're going to use top of the line hardware. The Nexus line is a demonstration of fluidity in minimal hardware conditions.
At best, 1.5 gb of RAM, and some incremental processor upgrade.
I wouldn't be surprised if they used Tegra 3 (as in Nexus 7) to streamline things.

[Q] Galaxy nexus (i9250) or Galaxy SII (i9100)

Hi, i have to buy a new phone after about 5 years =P and i want to keep for at least 3-4 years
I have seen many topic about that...but i really don't know which one to choose.
The big difference is the GPU, one have PowerVR SGX540 (galaxy nexus) and the other one have mali-400 (SGSII)
Which one is better? considering that i want also to play games.

Either device will be aptly suited to play games and things. The difference is hardly noticeable and the fact that the Nexus is officially supported by AOSP, means developers will have no problems porting future builds to the device that will run far better then the builds will run on the SII.
Id say go with the Nexus, it already is a full OS update ahead of the SII

Exactly! Not only wrong there, S2 users got stock JB leak last month. It will get JB as promised. I am not a heavy gamer but I have never heard anybody with TIOMAP-4 complaining about game lag. I replaced my S2 with GNex more than 2 months ago and I do not regret at all. S2 is obviously a great device but I cannot imagine myself going back to it. User experience is incomparably better here with Nexus. Stock JB has breathed a new life in this phone. While S2 feels kinda obsolete (due to low resolution screen) now GNex still gives you high end device's experience.

Not really, many of them are disappointed with lack of possibilities to further development due to the fact that samsung exynos (or even yamaha soundchip) is closed hardware. Next firmware update will be most probably the last one for this handset. CM10 can be hardly called stable there....no butter, no sound as it should be, no hdmi out etc. Elite developers from Team Hacksung (like Codeworxx, Entropy, Xplowid) are already fed up with this device and I really understand them.
I would steer clear of the SII. Sprints SII has been known for issues since the ICS update. Battery not lasting and reception is not the best. I am not sure of the other carriers, but for Sprint it has been a headache. Just some advice for you coming from a technical consultant(I repair the phones) from Sprint.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I would get the Galaxy Nexus just for the resolution, the bigger screen and the stock android which is awesome. Timely updates as well.
From a previous Galaxy SII owner perspective, stay away from the SII!

How good is this phone still?

Hi,
About a year and a half ago I went from an iPhone 3 to a Galaxy Gio (my first android phone) and I've been happy ever since with Android. But the phone is on it's last legs, so time for a new phone.
Now with the arrival of the Nexus 4 I was really excited about it and was thinking about getting one.
But the issues with delivery, the fact it can't be found in the Netherlands and the fact that no retailer sells it for the 299e it's supposed to go (LG told a big Spanish retailer to sell it for 599 I read yesterday, MediaMarkt in Germany sells it for 395) made me look for an alternative.
I don't want to spend too much, so my budget is around 300 as I recently bought an iPad for the "heavy" things such as games.
I purely want a phone with a large screen that is able to play games you play for a few minutes. Stuff like Temple Run, racegames etc etc.
I'm now leaning towards the Google Nexus, my question is how future proof is this phone? Will it be able to run games that come out, say, the next year or so? Will updates after 4.2 also appear for the Galaxy Nexus?
I found a brand new one for 249e, is it still worth the money? Many thanks in advance.
Definitely worth it . Over a Year old and its still one of the best phones on the market . It has no problem with any current games and I don't see that changing for some time. Dual cores are still on top! a quad core is almost pointless ....for now. They still put the dual core chip sets in the galaxy Slll.

They put dual core S4 in the American S3 because of LTE not playing well with Exynos Quad. Same for the HTC One X/S.
I just bought my second one. It is a very very capable device. Personally I don't game on my phone aside from the occasional Bad Piggies or GTA Vice City when I'm bored at work, I use my Nexus 7 for all my gaming needs, but when it comes to every day computing it is still a top performer. A lot of us feel the LG Nexus is a step down in terms of build quality and the cost isn't really worth the benefits. Yeah it has more ram and processors but the camera is just as sad compared to the what it could/should have been. Its just not worth that extra cost. For instance I bought a mint GSM Nexus about 2 weeks ago, it is 6 months old and I got 4 OEM batteries + charger, and 7 cases including a SGP Neo Hybrid and a mess of screen protectors for 299. I would have paid no less then 399 w/tax & ship for a Nexus4 with nothing else.
It would be better for most of us to keep on chugging with the Gnex until the next Nexus device comes out that should be a good sized leap from the N4. Phones have that 2 cycle evolutionary leap. Like how the first HTC phones were great and the 2nd series (sensation....) Sucked pretty bad. But the OneX is great and the OneX+ isn't a huge improvement. Same thing with the Nexus phones. The Nexus One was spectacular. 1GHZ processor when 550 was unheard of. 512 ram, when 256 was normal and a S-AMOLED screen. The Nexus S was moderate. A curved screen, NFC and 1gb ram ( I could be wrong about the ram) were the only major improvements. But then the Galaxy Nexus introduced a dual core processor, huge 720P HD screen, on screen keys and a lot more.
I think the next Nexus will be huge

This phone rocks and I love it but recently 4.2.1 has been giving me issues and I feel like a beta tester for Google. Don't say flash factory images, I did and I factory reset a few times. Hoping on 4.2.2 to fix the issues otherwise this phone is still extremely capable and does everything I need it do and can easily last me another year.

Because nobody sells it for 299 in Europe. The 299 version goes for 395. Black market at the moment is 500e.
Plus there is a 7 week waiting time for the people that already ordered. It will take well over 2 to 3 months before it will be widely available. Who knows how long it will take before it's available for 299.
Maybe in a year or so I'll upgrade to the 4 .

Exactly, all I could find was actually pretty good news:
"Our sources left us with some more info regarding the OS. Android 5.0 will be an optimized OS and will run well even on devices with 512 MB of RAM"
If that quote is true, people with Nexus S and Galaxy S phones will still be able to port this over, and maybe it will even run better than JB? Who knows, but fingers crossed.
Look at the Android Developers channel, under the video "Android Graphics Performance". GPU operations for drawing have been optimized by over 60% in some cases.

Bottlenecks in Nexus S are 512 RAM and 1000Mhz CPU single core.
I have one Galaxy S1 (just like Galaxy Nexus S) with 1200mhz (stable OC without voltage tweak) runs very good anyway on 4.2.2
I also read something about new google 2013 kernel patches for Nexus S.
I won't be surprised, they would have dropped support for the gnex then.
Each nexus is roughly supported for 2 years..

well by google yes
our devs are always supporting this phone! :good:
If nexus s isn't supported anymore, how can it be eligible to receive kernel updates/fixes? That's an unfounded rumour.
I only hope Google releases the compatible updated binaries for building, if needed.

The article also uses the rendering of the Nexus 5 by LG. The company has stated that it is not interested in making another Nexus device. That, alone, leads me to believe that 99 percent of the article is pure speculation.
Jelly bean was released about the same time last year. So its not really a rumor. Its common sense. If Google is going to be releasing a big update, it would be a year from their last one. I find it funny people were expecting a big update only months after getting one. 4.3 would have been a nice little treat at I/O though. I'm still hoping we get that soon.

They said they are interested but are not currently making one. You've been reading equally unreliable sites. Rumors are just rumors. The new version of Android will come on the new Nexus regardless of who manufactures it.
It's schedule around the same time ios7 should be rolling. So from that corporate competitive perspective, it seems just about right.

I've seen articles state the new version of Android will allow it to run smooth on older devices since ICS came out. I'm sure they are making the OS run smoother overall, but don't expect better performance on older phones with a new OS.
I do look forward to what Google does to further enhance the Android experience.

Well, when every iPhone version uses the same hardware, it's easy to make it available for older models.
OMG key lime pie is coming in (random month)! And the galaxy Nexus won't be getting it because (insert illogical reason with no proof)
Really?

We'll see..
Some food for thoughts..
How many things about 4.3 and KLP are actually supported with credible proof?
And just for kicks,

I read only the 4s,5, 5s will get an official update of ios7. I played with an beta variant of ios7 on iphone 5 yesterday and its nice IMS. (brother has an developer account). I know sometime with certain hardware ie dual core, ram size etc. Google might feel its not capable of handle it at the level of expected performance.
