[Q] Flash custom rom for a newbie..!!!

Hello all
I am a noob about flashing custom roms and i want to try the AOKP BUILD 25 for my nexus just to try it.
So my nexus has the following:
Phone: MAGURO GSM
Android OS: yakju 4.0.2 ICL53F
I WANT YOU PEOPLE TO HELP ME IF I GET THESE STEPS CORRECT(so i dont mess up my much loved nexus)
1.Make a backup with CWM(is this what you guys call NANDROID???)
2.Wipe data/factory reset in CWM
3.Put the ROM at the root of sd card on the phone(in pc i connect the nexus and put them right after the galaxu nexus drive where everything is???)
4.Flash AOKP BUILD 25(Do i need to flash previous build before i flash buid 25)
5.Flash Gapps
6. Reboot
My other questions are:
1.Everytime you flash a custom rom,Gapps,custom KERNEL,RADIO, I do these steps one by one or all at the same time????
2.The md5 sums i put them together with the ROM OR GAPPS on the phone or is just for me to check if they are correct
3.If a make a factory/data reset in CWM doesn't that delete my CWM and Titanium apps back ups???
4.Last one is if a flash a custom rom like AOKP 25 after that i cant restore system apps and data???

Correct.

Depends on what you're flashing. If you're just updating GAPPS or to a new version of the same ROM you don't have to do a full wipe. That'd be a hassle. Only wipe if they recommend it for the update, or you're switching to a completely different ROM.

Its meant to preserve your data but wipe the system for re-flashing.

You can restore user apps + data. I would stay away from restoring system data as it usually causes more problems than its worth. As a precaution I like to do a nandroid of the clean ROM before batch restoring with TiBU, because restoring lots of apps can mess things up and you don't wanna wipe and reflash because you borked a restore.

1.Do i need to flash previous builds before i flash buid 25??
2.And i flash the Milestone 3 after i flash AOKP BUILD 25 AND GAPPS???

no and no
25 is the full rom (outside of gapps) and i think more current than milestone 3.
all you'd need to do is flash aokp 25 and then gapps.

dirty flash means you didnt wipe data/cache.
most of the time, you can dirty flash newer versions of the same rom over the older version of the rom you have.
HOWEVER, if you have problems, you need to wipe data/cache and reflash the rom completely

Guess I might as well wipe the cache and dalvik even on a dirty flash?

I upgraded from CM10 M1 to M2 with only a wipe of Dalvik cache. Works fine.

I finished installing M2 after wiping both the cache and dalvik cache (figured I would do the cache just in case).
Worked great!

***what Nexus version do you have?*** i've used the below instructions with GSM GNex***
If you're coming from an AOSP CM9 rom, Do the following :
Download Maguro (or your models ROM+Gappsl).
- boot into recovery.
- Preform NANDroid Backup.
- Wipe Dalvik cache.
- Wipe Factory reset.
- Wipe Cache.
- install zip from SDcard>choose zip from SDcard>ROM.zip (your ROM)
- Flash Gapps.zip
- Flash kernel.zip (if you have one)
- go to Advanced> Fix Permissions
- Reboot system now !
- Enjoy.
***I've used this method for a trillion flashes !***

No need to wipe anything when updating nightlies. Like it was said before, wipe data and reflash when you face problems.

[Q] Custom Roms / Kernel Questions

I have a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-1747) that is running stock with root.
I have rooted my phone using the samsung toolkit located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
Since that toolkit flashed a CWM Based recovery I have installed ROM Manager and flashed CWM Recovery version 6.0.1.2
My questions are..
- with my current setup.. am I technically running the "Stock" samsung kernel?
- why would you want to flash a different kernel to your phone?
- and is it necessary to flash a different kernel in order to use certain custom roms?
- At first I was leaning towards flashing CM10 nightly but the more I look at it.. I want to flash PARANOIDANDROID 2.22 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818199
Is this rom fully compatible with my AT&T phone? and since i'm running stock with root, do I need to do anything special before flashing this rom? Factory reset? Wipe Data? I've already made a full nandroid backup.

Well technically.. most kernels will work with most of the ROMS out there.. as long as you stay withing your phones threads.. But some ROMs have a kernal with them.. and some ROMS you need to flash your own kernel..

The steps for flashing are as follows:
CWM: Install Zip: Rom: Download Here Make sure the file you download is PA-2.22-d2att.zip
CWM: Install Zip: Gapps: Download (These are the new ones)
CWM: Wipe Data/Factory Reset
CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot and edit your Apps Dpi & Layout under Settings/Paranoid Settings - DO NOT RESTORE YOUR OLD PROPERTIES FOR NOW
Would i need to wipe data, factory reset, then also wipe dalvik cache BEFORE I install the rom and gapps since i'm running stock with root?

i'm also reading that for paranoidandroid you must first flash CM10 then flash paranoid.. is this accurate?

umm.. not sure where you saw that you need to flash a CM rom before flashing the paranoid ROM..
I believe the Paranoid rom is based off CM
The instruction on the link you have, in my opinion, is wrong..
The way that i flash my roms is...
Wipe data/factory reset..
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Format/Data
Fomat/System ( i think deletes backups) only do in emergency.aka optional step
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps.
THATS IT
Some people will wipe cache afer flashing a rom..
But if you wipe data/factory reset i believe deletes the ROM...

If you are already running CM10 then you don't need to wipe Cache. Just dalvik and data. Im pretty sure thats what was confusing, since this is based off of CM10.

yeah, I just keep reading and reading.. probably making this out to be more difficult than it really is just don't want to end up with a brick or anything.
I'm already on stock + root + latest CWM so I just need to put the files on my phone and flash but I believe these are the steps i need to take:
1- Download ROM and Gapps to internal sd card
2- Boot phone into recovery
3- WIPE Cache/Delvik/Data factory reset> Mounts and Storage- format system
4- Flash ROM and Gapps

Hey,I just flashed twrp's last recovery and now i want to flash a 4.2.1 rom,what should I wipe? Cuz i never used twrp before and I don't wanna dk smth wrong :-/ should I wipe everything except Internal/external memory?

Edit: this is how I flash roms and I NEVER had an extra issue by doing so.

this how i flash ANY rom and have never had issues..
1. factory reset
2. wipe system
3. wipe cache
4. wipe dalvik
5. flash rom
6. flash gapps
7. reboot

Note to OP: Don't flash Gapps if it is included already in the ROM you installed.

after flash i wipe the cache/dalvik. I think it is the option after you flash in twrp.

How to update GSIII with CyanogedMod 10.2 Nightlies

Less than a week ago, I was able to flash cm-10.2-20130917-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip onto my girlfriend's Galaxy S III. She hates when I update her phone because it means I have to wipe everything and she has to start from scratch by signing into Google again, signing into all her Wi-Fi connections, re-downloading apps and signing in, etc.........
Now because I installed a nightly, that means there will obviously be a new update from CyanogenMod every 1-2 days.
My question is..
Is there a way I can update her phone with each nighty without having to do a full wipe on her phone and instead just "updating" the ROM without having to wipe everything? Can someone please provide me with the steps? I'm sure if it's possible, it's very easy. I just don't know myself. Thank you in advanced.
The phone is a T-Mobile Galaxy S III (SGH-T999) and it has ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.3.7

As long as you stay with the same version, CM10.1 or CM10.2, you can dirty flash (without wiping all of the user data.

By dirty flash, do you mean:
1) Reboot into recovery
2) Perform backup
3) Install ZIP (then choose the newly downloaded nightly
4) Reboot
Basically skip the step where I would perform a data wipe?

Yes, but it doesn't hurt to wipe cache/dalvik and fix permissions while you are in there, and don't forget to flash GApps too.

I'd say just flash the stable release.
