Sony, at least for AnandTech's review unit:
"I did some poking around, and my HTC One X (AT&T) review unit has a Sony display:
[DISP] mipi_video_sony_hd720p_init: assign initial setting for SONY_NT id 0x18103 Cut1, PANEL type = PANEL_ID_ELITE_SONY_NT"
The display on the Teg3 One X is from either Sharp or AUO (Acer); HTC uses both. The AUO display is cooler and seems to be preferred. The One XL only uses a Sony display.
so sony rules!! :good:

in this test the LG screen seems the better one...
Read the Nexus 4 reviews they are stating the screen displays more washed out colours. It will be a good screen burn good as the One X hard to tell until those with both phones can compare.
Also remember the HOX will have the larger screen despite being the same size as the on screen buttons on the N4 takes up screen estate.

Do all displays look like that http://www.kitguru.net/mobile/blair-mcclelland/htc-one-x-smartphone-indepth-analysis/ ? By that, i mean if you enlarge that image, you can see parallel alternating lines with different color. It is visible under certain lighting only. If you also turn on the screen and put a white background, for example, and look very closely at the screen at a 10-15cm distance for some time, you can see parallel lines of alternating brightness. Does that have to do with the technology?

Those marks are the electrical tracks written on the glass to enable it to detect touch. Chemicals are used that are electrically conductive and are almost transparent to light, but not completely transparent to light, so under some circumstances you will see these marks.

I don't think there is such thing as "best" screen. E.g. nothing can beat the AMOLEDs in terms of contrast. They suck at everything else (and I mean "everything"), but their black is unbeatable. Our screen has the advantage to be laminated to the protective glass which gives it great appeal. The butterfly has the highest ppi on a screen (higher than the N10 I think), but at the end of the day it's which screen looks better to YOU. And that's something only you can decide by looking at them. No benchmarking or reviews can do that.

Both current mainstream screen technologies have their advantages and disadvantages.
I like both IPS and AMOLED for different reasons.
Screen technology will improve further next year.
So just enjoy whatever device you get as there will always be something better coming along.

someone here already mentioned that the GN screen isn't as black as the gs2 or nexus s. as in, a backlight is still visible on an all black background. can others confirm this? even better, can someone who owns both phones, or all 3, take a comparison pic? thanks
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I have the Nexus and GSII side by side and there is no difference in the 'blackness' when the screens are switched off. AMOLED does not use a backlight; absolute black is represented by a switched off pixel.
One thing I have noticed is that in boot screen animation they use a grayish background rather than absolute black which is kind of stupid. Makes the screen look like a washed out LCD.
i should have been more clear. i was referring to the screen in a switched on position with lets say an all black wallpaper. i know how amoled screens use a switched off pixel for blacks but some people on these forums have claimed that they are noticing a slight backlight, especially visible in the dark

Galaxy nexus screen is pure black; however, it does seem to have more reflection when around light, and that light makes the pure blacks look not pure black.
But if you are in a dark area, blacks are pure black.

No, they are not off.
AMOLED screens have a minimum voltage applied when on. To turn a OLED pixel from fully off to fully on takes a lot more power. The contrast ratio of the sAMOLED screen is something like 100,000:1.

I guess the minimum voltage in GN has been increased at least compared to Nexus S. Here's comparison of my Nexus S (left) and GN (right). Pic is taken with 5 sec exposure. To be honest, the difference in that photo looks slightly bigger compared to what it is real life, probably because of that exposure time.
Black is from Dead Pixel Test apps black (second) screen. https://market.android.com/details?id=net.ujacha.deadpixel
aww that's kinda disappointing. I was really hoping for a pure black screen =/ you might be right about the minimum voltage increase being the cause of this
Well mine is BLACK and those pictures on my gn may look grey but the black around the phones show jet black (as viewed on my gn) Trust me blacks are black!
Disappointed, my Nexus S is really black.
Hope this is software issue and can be improved with future update.
you are correct the blackness is not pure black as my galaxy s, strange as it is using same screen technology
It is not pure black (as in a void of darkness) as it is like on my Nexus One. Very difficult to see... but seeable...

It is 100% a software issue. I've just done the same test using the same app (thanks for the link) and what I've noticed was the black wasn't pure black like Nexus S but software buttons were PURE BLACK. Because they are the part of the screen itself, it means Google changed it on purpose (or it's a bug)

Really hope this gets fixed
My screen is totally black when viewed when any light is around...like DAMN, black.
But I definitely agree when viewed in total blackness it looks like the screen has a (dim)backlight. Hopefully software and not hardware.
I think this could possible something that google have done on purpose to make the colours more "true to life" as with my S2 the blacks were gorgeous as the screen went off, but sometimes it didn't make the image very real as blacks were sometimes darker than they actually should of been
Any i don't know :/ - would be nice to have the option ie a switch on and off switch

No, Amoled is still the future. However, right now LCD currently is the best, since LCD has best battery life and non-pentile with ultra-high resolution. Why I say Amoled is the future it is because amoled has not require back-light which means you saw dark is completely dark, high colour saturation, 100% viewing angle and thinner. However, it has poor battery life when display white images(almost 3x higher power consumption than IPS-LCD display), too high contrast, too high colour saturation but already solved by now and high cost. That is why everyone right now prefer IPS/S.LCD 2 over HD S.Amoled. If Samsung solve this problem should be 1 year or 2. Then, LCD will be dead.

lol, just realised i said contrast twice.
i meant modified to improve viewing angles and contrast levels.
samoled have unnatural colors. They are too intense
From the copious amount of videos I've seen the viewing angle is great (same as any other LCD like my desire z) and the blacks look very black, nearly the same as the black bezel around it.
It all comes down to personal preferences. I think after a few hours most people are happy with what they see, I'm still happy with my standard SLCD

Gotta love this...
The screen is, frankly, insane. Compared to my Galaxy Nexus it was embarrassing ( I had a GN and loved the screen so if he says this, I am reassured )
This means a beats headset in box and beats enhanced audio right across the device. ( This might of answered the speculation as to whether it includes beats in the box)

You still won't get pure blacks on the One X like on the Nexus, however, the screen would be crystal clear and the colors would be natural.
I prefer Smoled.
imho, the colors are not natural on amoled's.
And who needs a green colored withe? I tested some amoled devices and this was the case..
The blacks are good enough on LCD. What I need is my whites to be white and colors to look natural. amoled screens give me a headache. They just aren't there yet. Also the LCD screens seem brighter which helps on sunny days. If you like the current set of AMOLED screens better, that's fine but I'm tired of hearing that it's better when I look at it and my eyes say NO.
i don't know if anybody noticed but color gradation is horrible on the SGSII screen, you can see the color steps very clearly in 2D games for example
Most Highres OLED Screen have Pentile screens (e.g. Galaxy Nexus). They can look pretty awful depending one the picture displayed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PenTile_matrix_family
Yes, pentile displays are awful..

Bikrame is ABSOLUTELY right bro, also take it from me, I used to be a DIE HARD HTC fan, however, after countless years and devices later I just got sick and tired of waiting for them (HTC) to get their **** together. One can only take so much disappointment before they lose all hope and walk away. I've owned only the latest and greatest of HTC phones on the market, and it was only a matter of inevitable time before the random reboots, crashes and frozen screens come into play, you just get fed up of having to constantly take out the battery to fix your phone... SAMSUNG definitely gets the everyday needs of real world use. Love my SGS3 !!!
Just take a quick look at the link below if you're still not convinced bro... In the end, the choice is totally yours to make... We here at XDA just try to help and inform each other the way family would. Best if luck though bud.

Super AMOLED HD
You’ve probably heard lots of press regarding this display as it’s been the frontman for Galaxy S phones for quite some time now. One of the best features about these display panels is that their black levels are*unparalleled–that is to say that when displaying black, the screen is practically off. This results in much richer detail in images (it’s black level, not white level that increases this quality). Combined with very high brightness and great viewing angles, the result is excellent contrast ratio which makes Super AMOLED displays perform valiantly in the outdoors. You may also hear people describe Super AMOLED colors being “vibrant” and/or “punchy,” which is also due to this great contrast ratio. There are some drawbacks however to this display tech. Due to the nature of how the colors are delivered, Super AMOLED tend to be blue/greenish in color repdouction, which can be unwanted for those preferring neutral color balance. In addition, although the display consumes little power when displaying black, web browsing–which predominantly uses a white background–saps battery life disproportionately quickly. Finally, the display of the Galaxy S III uses a PenTile grid, which decreases*the*actual number of subpixels used on the display (and thus the pixel density)–this is noticeable at high*magnifications, but for most users will go unnoticed.
Super LCD 2
Super LCD 2 is a great all around screen as well. Although it doesn’t have killer black levels or astounding brightness, it has great white balance and accurate color reproduction as well as a true RGB subpixel layout which renders the finest bit of detail. In Chris Ziegler’s review of the One X, he notes that the Super LCD 2 display “[has]*got a near-perfect 180 degree viewing angle and perhaps the most accurate color reproduction and color temperature available…” and furthermore, “At 720p, it falls well into ‘retina’ territory where the individual pixels become invisible to the naked eye.”ConclusionIf the Galaxy S III’s display was a Super AMOLED HD Plus with an RGB stripe display, this debate would simply be a matter of whether you prefer color accuracy or vibrancy of the display, with which the argument could be made that while important for computers, color accuracy is not [as] important on a phone and thus the Super AMOLED’s colors are more*aesthetically*favorable. However taking the PenTile arrangement into account, the rest of the factors can seem to be a moot point to many buyers, especially when they see images like this:
The truth is, unless you have microscopic vision or are purposely looking for image artifacts, there is no way you are going to notice a difference on the screen.
After all of that, it boils down to a matter of personal preference

Bad news, this is not the case. The same screen on a diffrent One X is bright as hell, like it should be, but not on mine.. Any other ideas? The phone itslef has a waist-height fall on pavement, sahttered the glass, the screen was ok. Now the repair guy is startled and doesnt know what to do - why the screen is dimm, could it be a backlight problem caused on the motherboard?
It might be a cheap, non oem screen.
How much did you pay for it, proper ones are not cheap.
Its 85Ls so in dollars its about 170$, but its hard to compare because of the currency.
I currently have a Note 3 and I was looking to replace it with the G3. My only problem is that I'm really used to the awesome look of a Super AMOLED screen and I was wondering if anyone has compared the Note 3's screen to the G3 and can tell me if the WQHD IPS panel has the same if not better look and contrast to it. I'm just tired of my phone and its annoying physical home button on the front, and I would much rather have a G3 because it looks better and its almost the same screen size. I know that Samsung will be keeping their annoying button because of their fingerprint sensor so I want something different. If no one has compared them, are there any places state side that have a demo model to look at yet? thanks in advance.

Given the AMOLED will always retain deeper blacks and whites is the G3 that much worse? I'm not that familar with the meaning of the numbers in terms of how each one looks on the screen.
No IPS panel is gonna beat Amoled in contrast since Amoled shows pure black. The issues that I have with Amoled are, pentile matrix and ghosting

I'm aware of that, but does it still have good contrast? I have IPS panels in devices and and I am not very impressed with their images. I haven't encountered any ghosting on my AMOLED yet but I think a change can be good. My N7's screen is noticeably worse than that of my note when I compare them side by side as is my now dead G Pad. From what I have read people are generally happy with the G3's screen, but since 100% of the time you are on your phone you look at the screen, I want to make sure that it looks as nice as it sounds and can provide deeper saturation depending on what I am doing (games, movies or just on xda of course) as the AMOLED does. I havent had a IPS panel phone in quite sometime, but rather other devices of sorts so I don't know how a smaller screen would look in these scenarios.

According to the gsmarena review. The contrast is lacking compared to other IPS panels. Specially the g2's panel. I'm with you I love the deep blacks that you get on Amoled screens. I could not stand the contrast of my m8 and it was the main reason why I returned it. The g2 screen is the only IPS panel that has truly impressed me. In fact I thought the phone had an Amoled screen the first time I saw it
