HTC to switch from AMOLED to STFT due to shortages

this could be a rumour but if true, I'm going to be a lot more careful with my desire.

I heard this as well. How will this affect battery life and do they look anywhere near as good?

LCDs these days are almost as good as AMOLED. Note that I said almost. I don't think anything can compare to an AMOLED or SuperAMOLED in regular inside environments, but when you get outside and the sun is shining, it's almost as if the screen isn't on. I have to put the brightness all of the way up to see the screen. LCDs don't have that problem. So If you don't know which you have in a new phone, you probably wont be able to tell unless you're outside! muahaha.

Hmm. I'm glad I already have the Desire...
As far as I know, AMOLED gives better viewing angles, has better colors and is better for battery life (which is a pain on Android phones).

Also, an AMOLED is better than LCD for showing true black or darker shades due to the lack of a backlight which is in LCD screens

Maybe this will finally prevent the pinkish issue on some HTC AMOLED devices.

Well, Sony's TFTs shouldn't have PenTile, which should make text sharper and really ought to get rid of the pink tint. It's a trade-off; personally I'd rather have TFT with RGB subpixels, but it seems to be a minority opinion.

according to engadget, they say the Iphone 4 screen is better then the Galaxy S Super ALMOLED.
Even though I hate Iphone I must admit, the screen does look good.

The screen could be good, but i don't understand why apple did't made the screen bigger.

Iphone 4 screen is awesome, nice colours & perfectly viewable from a variety of angles. Pin sharp & very very clear. But its a bit too small for my liking.

Doesn't the iphone use ips technology or is that the same as super lcd (because this is the first time i hear of super lcd)

Agree 100% (love AMOLED, but hate PenTile). If someone ever offer me to change my Desire to normal LCD Desire i would be over the moon. I hope HTC will make ones. Maybe, just one for me

What the Engadget article really showed was that in NORMAL use there was no discernible advantage to the iPhone 4 screen.
Being the Apple shills that they are they resorted to the retarded microscope comparisons. IF you have to show what the pixels look like under a microscope to get what the difference is then there's no difference.

Bikrame is ABSOLUTELY right bro, also take it from me, I used to be a DIE HARD HTC fan, however, after countless years and devices later I just got sick and tired of waiting for them (HTC) to get their **** together. One can only take so much disappointment before they lose all hope and walk away. I've owned only the latest and greatest of HTC phones on the market, and it was only a matter of inevitable time before the random reboots, crashes and frozen screens come into play, you just get fed up of having to constantly take out the battery to fix your phone... SAMSUNG definitely gets the everyday needs of real world use. Love my SGS3 !!!

Super AMOLED HD
You’ve probably heard lots of press regarding this display as it’s been the frontman for Galaxy S phones for quite some time now. One of the best features about these display panels is that their black levels are*unparalleled–that is to say that when displaying black, the screen is practically off. This results in much richer detail in images (it’s black level, not white level that increases this quality). Combined with very high brightness and great viewing angles, the result is excellent contrast ratio which makes Super AMOLED displays perform valiantly in the outdoors. You may also hear people describe Super AMOLED colors being “vibrant” and/or “punchy,” which is also due to this great contrast ratio.There are some drawbacks however to this display tech. Due to the nature of how the colors are delivered, Super AMOLED tend to be blue/greenish in color repdouction, which can be unwanted for those preferring neutral color balance. In addition, although the display consumes little power when displaying black, web browsing–which predominantly uses a white background–saps battery life disproportionately quickly. Super LCD 2
Super LCD 2 is a great all around screen as well. Although it doesn’t have killer black levels or astounding brightness, it has great white balance and accurate color reproduction as well as a true RGB subpixel layout which renders the finest bit of detail. In Chris Ziegler’s review of the One X, he notes that the Super LCD 2 display “[has]*got a near-perfect 180 degree viewing angle and perhaps the most accurate color reproduction and color temperature available…” and furthermore, “At 720p, it falls well into ‘retina’ territory where the individual pixels become invisible to the naked eye.”ConclusionIf the Galaxy S III’s display was a Super AMOLED HD Plus with an RGB stripe display, this debate would simply be a matter of whether you prefer color accuracy or vibrancy of the display, with which the argument could be made that while important for computers, color accuracy is not [as] important on a phone and thus the Super AMOLED’s colors are more*aesthetically*favorable. However taking the PenTile arrangement into account, the rest of the factors can seem to be a moot point to many buyers, especially when they see images like this:
The truth is, unless you have microscopic vision or are purposely looking for image artifacts, there is no way you are going to notice a difference on the screen.

I actually do notice the difference though. Samoled hd has deeper blacks and whiter whites than the slCD2. So in the contrast category, Samsung wins imo. Although color reproduction, the slcd 2 had more natural tones.

Amoled vs lcd

I love my amoled display, but which do you prefer, and why? For Amoled I mean [Amoled, Super Amoled, Super Amoled Plus, Super Amoled HD, (Super Amoled HD Plus?)] And for LCD I mean every other LCD you can name, there are too many for me.

After spending time on the beautiful display of the Galaxy S3 as well as many other phones I've worked on, I have to say the AMOLED will always win for me. I am REALLY big about contrast. I love being able to see a display with nearly infinite black level, beautiful saturated colors and decent energy consumption on top of that. OLED technology is the future in my opinion. It's a new technology and there's still so much room to make it even better and there is so much focus going into making it better.

There is no other screen technology that can produce black levels like amoled. However, IPS displays have the best viewing angles.

I've held my friend's HTC One X+ (a "Super LCD 2" screen) side by side with my S3, both at maximize brightness, outdoors on a sunny day. The LCD screen was noticeably brighter and easier to read in direct sunlight.

Yeah the whites are off, yeah the brightness isn't the greatest, yeah it is pentile. Technically it's not as good as the screen on the Nexus 4. And yet, my eyes prefer this AMOLED hands down. You can't explain that.

I have a Nexus 10 tablet and the GS3. Although the resolution of the Nexus 10's PLS (a type of LCD) display is unquestionably higher, the GS3's SAMOLED HD is still considerably better, in my opinion. With that being said, the IPS display used in the Kindle Fire HD is absolutely gorgeous. I'd go as far as saying that it gives the SAMOLED HD a run for its money.

This sg3 is my first Samoled device. I love it. Blows away my old Atrix display.
Sg3 is still oentile.but the new note 2 uses the newer tech with samoled..

I'm also coming from an atrix. Amoled technology is much better no question. Much more expensive to manufacture. I love how you put the brightness up a little and see perfectly in sunlight. Plus black themes will save you battery. Plus it looks amazing.

My cousin got the note 2 the other day, and we compared the two side by side. Honestly, neither of us could tell the difference.

The s3 has a great screen, but personally I do like samsungs super amoled + better. For example my s2 had a richer contrast to it, that I liked better. However, its still not something easy to see unless you're looking for it. The note 2 when i held them side by side, maybe had a little more sharpness, but that didnt matter to me at all with the fact I found it impractical to use with one hand. Or how I would hate having to hold that huge thing to my ear every time I made a call.

My wife has an iPhone 5 and i had the iPhone 4 (both LCD) and so I can easily make a direct comparison. The iPhone 5 is much brighter and is more accurate in its color. The Galaxy 3 has deeper blacks and more color saturation. Here is a professional comparison:

Screen question

I currently have a Note 3 and I was looking to replace it with the G3. My only problem is that I'm really used to the awesome look of a Super AMOLED screen and I was wondering if anyone has compared the Note 3's screen to the G3 and can tell me if the WQHD IPS panel has the same if not better look and contrast to it. I'm just tired of my phone and its annoying physical home button on the front, and I would much rather have a G3 because it looks better and its almost the same screen size. I know that Samsung will be keeping their annoying button because of their fingerprint sensor so I want something different. If no one has compared them, are there any places state side that have a demo model to look at yet? thanks in advance.

Given the AMOLED will always retain deeper blacks and whites is the G3 that much worse? I'm not that familar with the meaning of the numbers in terms of how each one looks on the screen.

No IPS panel is gonna beat Amoled in contrast since Amoled shows pure black. The issues that I have with Amoled are, pentile matrix and ghosting

I'm aware of that, but does it still have good contrast? I have IPS panels in devices and and I am not very impressed with their images. I haven't encountered any ghosting on my AMOLED yet but I think a change can be good. My N7's screen is noticeably worse than that of my note when I compare them side by side as is my now dead G Pad. From what I have read people are generally happy with the G3's screen, but since 100% of the time you are on your phone you look at the screen, I want to make sure that it looks as nice as it sounds and can provide deeper saturation depending on what I am doing (games, movies or just on xda of course) as the AMOLED does. I havent had a IPS panel phone in quite sometime, but rather other devices of sorts so I don't know how a smaller screen would look in these scenarios.

According to the gsmarena review. The contrast is lacking compared to other IPS panels. Specially the g2's panel. I'm with you I love the deep blacks that you get on Amoled screens. I could not stand the contrast of my m8 and it was the main reason why I returned it. The g2 screen is the only IPS panel that has truly impressed me. In fact I thought the phone had an Amoled screen the first time I saw it

Clarity/resolution

The OnePlus 3 has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

The display is definitely better than what weve had on the previous OnePlus phones. I did find the color saturation a bit weird coming from the LCD of the OnePlus One to the OAMOLED of the OP3, but it's a pretty beautiful display to look at.

I haven't been able to compare with another AMOLED screen, but compared to my LG G3 at full brightness, the OnePlus 3 screen colours doesn't seem as vibrant as an AMOLED screen should be. One other thing is that I've been so used to QHD on the G3, I can really notice the drop back to HD. Nonetheless, the OnePlus 3 is bang for buck no matter which way you look at it.

I just have one word. Gorgeous.

The display is sharp enough, bright enough and the color saturation is good. And definetly better than previous OP screens

You notice because it has PenTile arrangement, not because it's FHD.

I've gotten used to it now, the screen is still quite amazing on the OP3. Tbh, I've always found it funny how phone manufacturers are sucked into the res race given some of the drawbacks of pushing a larger amount of pixels.

I'm moving from my Moto X (2014) to OP3, and trust me the white balance is WAY off towards the blue end. I read a review which did display tests on both the AMOLEDs of X and OP3, and apart from the white balance, OP3 has a slightly better screen and/or screen calibration than the X (which is 2 years old).
Overall I still find it blue after I switch from the X, but it's a beautiful screen nonetheless.

Just got mine, haven't even turned it on yet, but AFAIK (from reviews) white balance is adjustable in the settings. Play around with the slider if it looks too blueish to you.

Yep, thanks! Did that but forgot to mention. Though be careful when you change the slider, there's no reset option in case you want it as it came (not a biggie but a reset option would've been helpful).

That's going to be the downfall of pentile. (The pixel arrangement of the screen) I don't think you have a bad display.

That's a bummer. Didn't know it'd turn out this bad.
I really hope I had a defective piece though. Text looks really bad on it. It ruins the experience of using a premium phone.
Guess I'm really bothered by it because my previous phones were the 6P and Note 4 and I use a retina MacBook Pro; all three had/have excellent displays).

I was very worried about the display when I have heard many saying that it is not sharp due to the pentile arrangement.
Just got mine few hours ago, and here is my personal opinion:
The display looked sharp and crisp, the pentile matrix is hardly visible unless you look at the screen very closely, but under normal usage distance, the display is excellent.

According to it, the effective resolution becomes 326ppi rather than 401ppi.
FYI, resolution of iphone 6s is also 326ppi.

To me the screen of OP3 is way better than the OP2. Everything just looks nice. My OP2 was calibrated with kcal and OP3 has similar calibration. Only the dark grey is a little on the blue/green side.

Disappointed with pixelation caused by the PenTile matrix. Sure, the display is great (much more vibrant and brighter than my outgoing iPhone 6 Plus) but with my perfect near vision small text and edges of icons etc all appear slightly jagged. From a normal distance it's not too bothersome but I can always see it. The 1080p RGB matrix panel on the iPhone appears instantly sharper in comparison but I still wouldn't say its a match as the colour, contrast and brightness are all far better on the OP3.

Resolution is too low for VR, but for everyday tasks is perfect.

I am hesitating to buy a 1+3 device mainly for the mixed comments about screen/display quality.
Can any owner of 1+3 post some pictures of any classical webpage (bbc, cnn, xda, ...) magnified gradually, up to the maximum (125%, 150%, ..., 300%, ..)?

Ive been using the G3, and i dont care what anyone says, there is a huge difference between 1080 and 1440. The text looks smudged. However I cant stream Youtube nor Anime at 720p or higher anywas so it wont matter for me.
Still on the fence of buying it.

If you don't like it's most visible part, then why consider buying it?
