Im getting some weird battery stuff, as well as the Android OS drain. If I restart my phone, once in a while It drops like 20-30%. i'll go from 46% to like 18%. I see the threads about slow draining, but mine seems to happen instantly sometimes (3 different times so far in a week), anyone have solutions? Got it from someone on ebay, can I still/should I RMA?
Someone posted a kernel fix in the international GSII forum, so we're either waiting for that to get ported over here or wait for samsung to release a fix. I have that same bug too. What percent r u getting on the Android OS? Mine is usually in the 60's.
Yeah I saw that thread, and I saw the 2 things causing it. Waiting for that fix I guess, hopefully it solves the big battery drops as well as the small draining. Mines pretty high, 30-50% I believe, and then cell reception takes 10-20% with LOS
That's alot better than mine. Although, I don't have that LOS problem. I'm running stock atm. Are u on a custom rom?
Running Starburst 1.5, stock was better for no LOS. But I like the customization on Starburst. Hopefully by the end of this week the kernel we be ported over.
Most likely a problem with the battery level algo and not an actual battery charge drop. It's probably showing the correct value after the reboot.
Using battery spy I was using like 12%-15% per hour, not even doing anything. Saw online that formating the SD card might help, just did, and now im using .8% per hour. The hell, something was scanning the SD card or something. Much better now, hopefully itll last 10-20 hours instead of 6 hours.
edit: so it went back up again. At .8% it will last 2 days+, but since the events keep taking the CPU, its draining it. I got it down to 4-8% by taking the SD card out. At least it will last a little longer. Cant wait for the fix, this baby will last days after.
Damn that sucks. I just formatted my card too cuz I was running out of options. Keep us updated tho.
so I think media scanner is draining, I downloaded rescan media root from android market and before I was draining at 12% per hour, but when I disable it with the app, it goes down to 5-6%. Anyone else try? Maybe thats something thats draining.
Oh btw have u tried turning off wifi? It only drained 6% after being off the charger for 9 hours. I havent touched the phone during that time span tho. Android os still in the 50s btw.

These are my overnight stats when I was sleeping. It's usually worse when wifi is on.

this is almost definitely correct. battery doesn't drop 15-20% because of reboot...the reading is wrong. Battery drivers have been bad on a few of the latest android phones. Just look at when your phone stays at 99% for the first 3 hrs of use each day...what, does it just get really inefficient in the afternoon because of food coma from lunch?

Trying now, seems to be charging faster too. I was mainly on wifi because cell standby was really high, keep getting LOS. But maybe I wont with wifi off now, and i'll see how battery does. ill keep you updated.
Still bad. Can only wait for the patches/fixes. 8 hours doing nothing almost. Sigh.
edit: sent to the galaxy support on twitter, see how that goes.

Hey man, I got one more tweak for u to try. I just rooted my phone w/ the latest zenomax kernel and Starburst 1.5. Download setcpu and create a profile for "screen off". Set it to 200-500mhz on demand. In theory, this should prevent 100% cpu utilization while the screen is off. I'm testing this myself atm, so I can't give u my battery stats yet.

Think I have the v3 version and 1.5 as well. I have setcpu set to 200-400 powersave. ive tried others and same. Suspend and events/0 keeping eating at the CPU. Thanks for the suggestions though.
figured i'd chime in here. i've had days where the battery was fine and days where the battery was absolute trash. it's happened on stock, and it's happened on root. but it almost always seems to coincide with LOS. the first picture is one of several instances where i've had pretty fast drain followed up by an instant dump in charge under normal use. it's strange how after the drop, it slowly works back up then levels off and drains normally. the 2nd pic is from today. i left my phone at home on accident when i went off to work, and when i returned, i had LOS and this battery stat. you can tell where i lost signal . the last pic is from yesterday while i had the phone at work all day and light use; a nice consistent drain.
FU battery drops and FML
Ok so i read all the posts in this thread and i understand theres a issue that effects the phone from even knowing what the battery % is. i had to post these though. i was at 47% then rebooted my phone. phone boots up and yehhh! woop woop 8% now mind you if you look at the graph it shows a nice constant cerve downward but steady because i was using my phone the entire time. now after the restart/batery drop of 40% i kept using the phone constantly but its funny how it took me over a hour of screen on to go from 8% to 5% !!!!! i bet to get from 5% to 1% it will take 2 more hours for sure. you can see the graph start to flatten out like its a super battery after the 40% drop because it didnt really drop to 8% !!! normally i wouldnt care since my phone battery last just as long, it just goes down really slow from 8%-1% but at 5% it auto dims screen and wont let me use my camera for the next 2-3 hours while i knock off the remaining "4%" of battery left. fml
Get Starburst v1.6. He removed DRM processes which should lower Android OS usage and thus battery draining. Plus with the LoStKernel, I haven't had any issues with losing signal since.
Also, use Titanium backup to remove running services that you don't need. I got rid of the stock email client, digital clock, media/social hub if you don't use those. They don't take up a lot of ram, but every little bit helps.
My battery life has improved after battery calibration. I suggest you calibrate if you didn't already so your battery usage graph may be more accurate. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the tips! I was wondering how you would calibrate the battery. Is it the same as wiping battery stats from CWM?
Hey, im on Telus so i dont have any other modes I can switch to to lower the drain. Ive noticed my battery drain is HORRENDOUS
Over the past 4 hours ive dropped 60%!
Now im wondering if im just running too many apps or if my stock battery may not be holding a proper charge anymore, and wanted to compare with others to see if others are running the same amount of apps and getting better battery or what
Ive got the following on:
Trillian (IM app)
K9-mail checking 2 aps
Regular Sync (Twitter, FB, Dropbox, Google(Calendar, Gmail, Contacts)
The battery usage summary seems to lie, 35% is the screen but only 13 minutes. Yet im at 40%
Android System at 20, Cell standby 13, Phone Idle 8
While heading to work, i ran DI Radio(music streaming), and lost 20% over around 35 minutes.
Im using the Tuesday rom with it's default kernel.
Is there anything I can do for better battery, because I dont have wifi in most places, and im running 3-4 bars constantly yet the phone just drains rentelessly. Even my Mugen battery was only lasting 16 hours...
It's quite possible that it's the ROM. I used to always get 8 hours on a single charge, regardless of location or ROM. I'm running Eugene's CM7 and I'm getting 13 hours on the same typical usage.
I'm running on Telus as well, with no wifi at all.
Although I am not running all of your apps, I would still consider myself a moderate to heavy user.

Seems rather sad that the phone can only do 8 hours on a charge. Im going to restore my juggernaut and see how that compares i guess.

Yeah, I know how you feel. Just experiment other ROMs and see if you get any changes.
How much usage would you get out of juggernaut?

Its been a while since ive run juggernaut. But it used to only drain 10% an hour i believe on 4g. I've restored my nandroid of Jugg and will be monitoring that.

any syncing or usage of the network will take a drain. any usage.
you can always turn on airplane mode and let it sit a few hours and see the drain, that determines whether its network or a ROM/kernel drain.
But yes, using 4G has big battery cost
Battery Life
I will tell you what, I have wasted so many hours playing with different ROM's and what not to find the one with the best battery life. And I will tell you what, the DARKSIDE:IGITAL::WARFARE ROM's out do any other ROM out there. I dunno what it is that thederekjay is doing, but Samsung should get this guy on pay roll because his work is the best.
I'm at hour 8 today on Darkside Digital Warfare, and 70% free from 8am to 4:30pm. I have push corporate email, automatic brightness, friendcaster push, and a slew of accounts and it runs like a champ with amazing battery.
Make sure your phone is going into Deep Sleep as often as possible when screen is off. My phone seems to be extremely picky in regards to which charger it likes and more often than not (even had this happen on the stock charger) the phone refuses to sleep after being charged (even if only for a few seconds...).
Download CPUSpy from the market and after each charge, go to CPUSpy, press menu and Reset Totals (phone cannot enter Deep Sleep during charging so it's important you start fresh after a charge to get accurate sleep time). Turn the screen off for a minute or two and turn it back on. Press menu again and Refresh Totals. In my experience, if the phone is not sleeping at this point - Deep Sleep showing in Unused States - then it will not sleep all day and remain in 384Mhz for hours, killing the battery rather quickly. From then, if I plug the phone in a supported charger (even for a second) and disconnect, Deep Sleep resumes normally. Rebooting always fixes it too.
If, like me, a lot of people also have this problem with the stock charger as well, I bet many are dissatisfied with the battery performance... The phone is supposed to spend the majority of it's time in Deep Sleep. I get this issue with several different chargers and cables and on different ROMS / kernels (including stock... go figure).
Im pretty sure its the signal itself draining it. It uses sleep for at least 40% of the time its on. I use my phone a good amount, but its the fact that if it sits on 4g even with the screen of, its rapidly draining during this time. ive even reset timers and left it sitting for an hour and itll be in sleep but lose 8% over an hour just doing nothing. I still wanna be able to recieve notifications tho so turning off data isnt an option. I will test turning off data anyways to see if the drain stops.
The battery drain is all those persistent internet apps running. That is what you call heavy usage. Trillian and the FB app being the two biggest. Music streaming would be up there as well if you aren't in good signal area. Look at your battery stats and see what your signal strength is.

I second this. If battery problem persist download better battery stats to see if you dont have any kernel wakelocks

Hi all,
is there a way to reduce battery drain when using 3g? I was navigating through the browser yesterday, and the battery went from 80% to 2%. Battery is new. I know that 3g uses more resources than Wifi, but I just would enhance these performances if possible.
Thanks.
i dont think there is other way than turning 3g off when you dont use it..maybe switching to 2g,which should use less resources, but also should be slower..
i dont even think that wifi drains less than 3g..
btw are you sure, that it was browsing what drained your battery?and how long did it take(when i use my phone much-almost nonstop screen on,3g on,gtalk, web, sms, some calls, some games,it lasts about 10hours,maybe less and i find it normal, the other side, when i tried to used it as less as i could(but still 3g on)i managed to get to 3days up without charging)few times i found my phone dead after night(i was sleeping so nothing "physical" could have happened to it ) when i left it with more than 50% battery,so i suppose that there must have been app which didnt allowed phone to sleep fully,or whatsoever..
Thanks for your reply. I will trace what's draining my battery to check whether there are some other applications.
Thanks.
My Wildfire drops from 100% to 40% with a whole day of browsing, YouTube, Google Music etc. which is very good for my phone. I'm running CM9, which could be your solution. Try a custom ROM.
Thanks. I have CM7.2. I'll try as soon as I get it repaired due to battery charged to 80% maximum.
Thanks.
Hi can anyone help me, I turned off my phone off at night(battery 100%), and in the morning it will be 60%. It drained even though the phone is off. I am running CM10 M2, and franco kernel.
Could this be a ROM or KERNEL problem?
I did experience this when changing to JB. Was not happening in ICS. My standby battery was not very good as well. Around 5%/hr even it is just idle, but this I understand it might be caused by ROM/Kernel/Apps.
But I don't get if it's off. I know it's not the battery fault, because when it is unplugged, I leave it for a day, and it's still on the same level on the next day when I used it again. I don't think it is because the ROM/Kernel. I tried to search about it even on other forums, but still don't have answers. So I try to post this. Anyone having the same problem?
Thank you for any help!! Really appreciate it!
Hi
got an EPIC 4G
it heats up excruciatingly while charging , especially from top back area
also no matter its a new or old battery , any modem , kernel or rom , the phone drains like anything , a fully charged battery drains sitting idle within in 4 hrs
bought it off ebay for a friend whose epic i had bricked
any help would be appreciated.

Mines was the same way. Mine even drained when the power was OFF. Some things I noticed is that on wifi, it drains less. When not on wifi, if I have a weak signal, it gets warm and drains like nobody's business (4hrs like yours). Turn off 4G. Turn off bluetooth when not in use. Make sure the gps is not on. Some people say that this doesnt matter because the gps will come on only when needed, but I noticed a difference. Stop some of your programs / apps from running in background, or stop them from booting at start if you dont use them much (do this with ALL IN ONE TOOLBOX on PlayStore). Lastly, let the battery go through a full discharge a couple of times... this is all that I can think of as of now. HTH.
Just my 2 cents, but it seems like my phone heats up more when on stock and cm7, compared to cm10.1. Heat issues and battery drain virtually gone on cm10.1, but a pesky random reboot bug that I can't figure out.
What rom are you running, and are you using a 3rd party battery?
