Exit power off hold volume up+home and then power
Volume down is download mode or odin mode.

now before you try to flame me, ive gone here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265399
from that i was able to root my phone, and also flashed a custom recovery
couple things, the tutorial doesnt say HOW to access the recovery once flashed, nor does it say HOW to flash a custom rom
can somebody point me to the tutorial for that?
im a lil confused as to flash with recovery or with the odin v1.85 thingy
Hold the volume up button and power button to enter recovery....haven't flashed a rom yet either. I guess through Odin if it's a .tar file and through recovery if its a zip. Haven't checked yet.

Recovery unless different on this device has always been volume down + power.

That's incorrect..
For Samsung Galaxy s2 epic 4G
vol down + power = download mode
Vol up + power = CWRecovery
Btw OP, your phone has to be turned off then do the button deal.

check out my links in that thread some good info...
So I just got this device and rooted the phone. For whatever reason, I can't seem to get into recovery when turning on the device and holding Vol Down + Power. It always goes into Download Mode. I have Clockwork installed via Rom Manager and am able to boot into Recovery that way (also if I use the Nexus Root Toolkit, when the device reboots, it cycles through recovery). I tried flashing ParanoidAndroid and it's been stuck on the loading screen forever (about 20 min). I've tried rebooting and letting it go, but it's still running. Now if I try to reboot into recovery, I cannot since it keeps going to the download screen. Am I not waiting long enough or did I do something wrong?
Hold both vol up and down at same time with power button

ahh didn't realize I could hold both and had to. Thanks!
In able to get in to recovery, you need to press vol down, vol up, and power. Then use the volume keys to navigate to recovery.

I don't know if you already knew this but your phone has safe mode.
When you boot in safe mode only the Android system is loaded. So if you have a problem with a certain app it is much easier to uninstall it that way.
Just hold both volume keys during boot.
If you are in Safe Mode your phone will show it on screen.
edit :
You can also long press the reboot option

Holding both volume keys would boot into Ramdump Mode, isn't it?

don't press the home key
IIRC isn't just simply tapping volume key would let you boot to safe mode?

You might have to do a factory reset in recovery mode. Thats normally the easiest way to get past softbricks.

- pull battery
- then hold home, volume up, and power and release when ever the blue text on top right flashes.
You flashed a TW kernel and not an AOSP one. That's why you got a bootloop
Vol up+power+home
