[Q] Freezes / FI27 Sprint nag - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

ok, so let me start off with I'm really an average enthsuiast and have a wide array of knowlede of multiple OS's including Linux, so doing mods is not foreign to me. The hardest thing about this crap is learning new terminology as you change devices.
On thst note, I was working with stock rooted E4GT on ICS 4.0.4 (FH13) with AGAT Recovery 0.2.2 and (as techies normally do), I want to make mine better and faster.
All of a sudden my phone started freezing randomly in apps. It seems to consistently do it if I try and do copy/paste functions, and more specifically if I do long-press in any application. Then the Sprint FI27update appeared and keeps nagging me to be installed. Not sure if thats coincidence or what, but the nag is annoying as hell. I changed my kernel to 3.0.42+,AGAT_FI27_kernel #v0.6.3 at this point hoping the freezes were a performance thing. No change tho
I think I got frustrated one day and just hit install on the Sprint update to see what would happen (mostly hoping copy and paste would start working),but predictably, i got a yellow triangle error. Rebooted to AGAT and restored my System, cleared cache, rebooted, back up and working and the nag was gone....for a little bit, but its back now. I asume it just had to redownload
So, this is where I stand...All I want now is the nag gone, and maybe a cool rom, but overall something that doesnt freeze cause I NEEEEEED the copy function of my phone.
Let me thank all of you in advance for your help with this, and for really having a top notch forum thats extremely helpful. Any and all advice is appreciated!

M'ics 1.7a fi27 deodexed has given me not a single problem. And best of all you are up to date and no nag from an update because you are on the latest

Hey - I only got around to doing this today, but THANK you for the advice. I installed M'ics 1.7a deodexed via AGAT (which updated recovery to Venum 0.0.1), wiped cache, rebooted, optimized apps. Little slow at first but that seems par for after a fresh ROM install.
Copy/Paste works now without freezing!! And thusfar no FI27 nag. Very cool theme it comes preloaded with too.
Thanks for your help and advice, seriously

No problem. If you would like some help odexing it for a snappier rom let me know. Also adwlauncherex is awesome on it

[Q] advice? seems like my phone is getting more unstable

What's up everyone! just needed some advice if you don't mind. lately my phone's been freezing randomly, and it seems like my battery life has been getting crappier..
was wondering if I should just Odin back to stock and re-flash everything, do you think that would cure my ills?
I started with my first ROM -- srf1.1.0 and loved it... tried the vision kernel 1.1, tried genocide 1.0... LOVED vision 1.2 but went back to 1.1 because ppl started getting bricks..
i don't know if it's data corruption (have journalling off), or if it's like artifacts from vision kernel 1.2 (it didn't give me any problems, honestly my fav kernel with insane battery life it seemed)
yesterday i restored a back up that was pre-ext4.. and it when that rebooted i had the "android" flashing over the original sprint bootup animation, so i rebooted and got thrown into a boot loop. pulled battery, booted into cwm and restored into a more recent backup that was post-ext4 and things seem to be fine.. except i've gotten maybe two random freezes since.
so yea, do you think Odin to stock and reflashing srf will bring me back to bliss, or.. am i screwed, or somewhere in between? i've read as much as i could but i know i'm a newb, so i'm grateful for any wisdom y'all can throw my way. THANKS!

Yes, it will. You did a number on your data, so it's little wonder things weren't working well for you. If you get freezes, use VisionKernel 1.1 or Genocide.

thanks k0nane.. just finished doing all that -- phew, just leveled up my experience... now i can add "knows how to use odin" to the resume lol
I recommend trying Twilight Zone kernel 1.0.4... Thats the one I have had the best luck with, nothing against the other 2 kOnane mentioned, just my opinion.

Most important while figuring out which is best, enable file system journaling by doing a cwm backup and restore right after the clean build. This will help the more unstable phenon from recurring in the future.

update: so last night i ODIN'd back to EB13, ODIN'd the EC05 modem, and reflashed SRF1.1.0 and things were great... until i flashed fugutweaks (it seemed like that was the culprit).. then i started getting lots of FCs for gmail mail calendar and google framework...
wiped data/cache/dalvik x3 in cwm and reflashed SRF1.1.0 and things have been good.
can someone confirm this point? --> i think i've learned not to do more than one thing in cwm at a time. like if i fix permissions, then i should reboot before flashing the impaled keyboard tweak, etc.. is that correct? i think i do remember getting lazy before and doing two things in cwm before rebooting, or something like that.
i also think i learned that i can't just replace bootanimation.zip in the SRF1.1.0 .zip file with a different one -- is that because the zip is "signed"?
all in all... i thank all of you guys here -- i'm learning lots and i'm grateful that i have knowledgeable peeps to turn to when i've done something i wasn't smart enough to realize was dumb =)

k0nane -- was there something in specific that you're referring to that I did, which "did a number on my data"? just curious -- i'd like not to repeat that again (although, i'd like also to not have to turn journaling on, lol)

Just out of currrorisoty...why anti journal. I mean imho....the performance hit is negligable and it helps to saf3guard you against the types of failure you hqve qalready exppierance

Journaling shortens the life of your phone. More writes = faster nand corruption.
by as much as ext4 vs rfs... which would equate to a few days shorter life over the lifespan of your phone.. all the backup restores, and odin flashes more than make up for the journal writes anyway...

I know I had an ssd on a netbook and thought the same. If you are talking the difference of 30 years on the storage v s 100 years...I personally don't care about that as nobody will ev en recal the epic on that time. I think the life shortening thin is negligable due to the use expectancy of the phone.

We need stable Roms!

First off i would like to thank all devs for their hard work!
When are we going to have roms that don't soft reset on their own? everyone is making roms based on calks and they all soft reset when installing software needed and like to use.
for instance i cant install my backup pro on calks roms, but the free my backup works. when installing launcher 7 on his roms, it soft resets during calls.
why can't we have someone use the stock rom, root it, remove ciq, add tethering and so forth so we don't have issues.
i know the default response is "don't download them if you don't like them". We are here to have fun and test stuff but these roms soft reset after stating their roms are a finished product.
We?
I've been through just about every ROM in the development section and have never had a problem.
Sent from the future.

I have been running Calkulin's since I got my device... no issues.
this thread comers off as sorta disrespectful to a dev who works hard on them. imo

Wow.
You don't get to use "thank you" as an excuse to start bashing the work here. It doesn't matter if the wonderful devs "state their ROM is a finished product" or not. They don't owe you, me, XDA or anyone else a goddamn thing. Frankly, if they want to intentionally put in boot loops for giggles, that's their right and you don't get to say a thing about it. They're doing it for free; entirely for free so that folks like you and I might be able to enjoy an improved user experience on our $600 phones.
Why can't "we" have "stable ROMs?" Because you haven't spent a couple hundred hours programming one for us so we can bash every single problem it has.
Either get working on that or, please, kindly shut the **** up.
Thank you!
Let me know when you create one, OR when you start paying the DEV to work for you and you.
Till then, kindly stfu .

My Backup Pro works perfect for me on all versions of calk's rom. Sounds like your phone just sucks. I have had 0 reboots unless using the OLD lockscreen mod (before the most recent update), or because of the LOS repair daemon.
Snowflakes
Yeah, no stability issues here and I've tried several ROM's. That said it seems like our phones are like snowflakes. No two seem to be exactly the same. For example, I have never experienced LoS (knock on wood) but obviously this is a significant problem for lots of folks. And some phones can be under and overclocked more than others. Weird.

Wtf are you talking about? Lol
I can understand where the OP is coming from. When I was on the Evo 3D and every other phone on my signature, when the dev said there rom was complete it was finished and stable.
On this phone, it was a different story. I was also one of the phone Epic users who phone would reboot on EVERY SINGLE rom and that was with no custom launcher and no overclock. It would just hot reboot randomly by it self on every rom.
The OP is correct to a certain extent that EVERY rom on here is built off Culks work so what every problem Culks rom had the other roms had the same problem. So of course my phone was hot rebooting on every rom.
This seemed to have been fixed with the EK02 stock rom became available because now that im on Calks 2.0 rom I havnt had a hot reboot ever since.
To the OP go ahead and install the EK Rom / Radio / Kernal and your hot reboots should go away. If your having reboots from using custom launcher then I dont have a solution for that.
As for MyBackUp Pro it always worked on every rom so I dont know what to say there.
Good luck!
First off, why point fingers at roms when it could, in fact, be the app that is causing the issue? I've been running Caulkin's Rom since his first issue and have yet to have a single reboot.
Any backup program can cause issues depending upon what you're restoring. If you're trying to restore any system settings you're setting yourself up for problems. Even restoring some apps with data can cause issues as file structures may change as roms are updated.
So, do yourself a favor before you start pointing fingers at devs and roms. Don't take the lazy way out just once. Do a full wipe, install all your apps fresh from the market and see what happens. I highly doubt you'll see any reboots at all.
.....
Starburst and Venum have been perfect for me. Sometimes I swear its the device, mine won't overclock at all and playing with voltages causes more problems than it solves on my device. Stock kernel seems to solve all my problems though.

Seriously, I have to back the other responses here. The day you have a ROM that works perfectly for YOU is the day you compile it yourself. Until then, be happy that these guys spend any of their valuable free time contributing something that makes all of our lives more enjoyable. If you can't do that, then kindly find the door.
I havent had a problem with any rom. No reboots at all. Overclocked, underclocked or stock, havent had a problem. Perhaps the problem isnt the phone, but whats behind it.....

QFT - The non programming user base needs to get some perspective about the fact that they are contributing nothing so therefore have no say in any aspect of development. Such is life.

going from mijjas goodness to re-calked

First of all, mijjas goodness ICS (ff18) rom is good on battery life but i have a couple of issues:
the unlocker is laggy and if you use golauncher its even laggier and locks while you are on the phone!!!
you can't take screenshots
It will just freeze altogether sometimes and i have to sleep and wake the phone ..
programs force close!
Mijjas stupid updater is always popping up on my notifications and is very slow and freezes also!
The dialer will not work when trying to respond to automated services(this is the WORST!!..i couldn't call my insurance company, i couldn't even get through to my bank!!)
So i want to try re-calked and my question is this:
Can i just use the AGAT CWM recovery that i have, wipe data, use calkulins's format all and flash Re-calked?
any insight would be greatly appreciative, as i can't even type messages in the developer's forums and its frustrating!!

Yes that recovery is safe flash away, but why don't you just try a complete fresh install of goodness beforehand and see if that irons out some of your issues? Not trying to deter you from switching though, I have ran goodness for a while issue free screen shots are volume down + power simultanously...they work fine for me...there is also a script in the updater for screenshots...you' ll miss theming and the updater...if you use them
Yeah i later found that with ICS, screen shots are "home" and "power" button for 2 seconds instead of instantaneous(like GB).
I went ahead and flashed the Re-calked rom that was basically calk's rom re-cooked into ics fh18 i think? The battery life was utterly amazing, but i have like 3 batteries and was more concerned with speed.
I am now running calkulin's ICS release and it is badass..Its everything i would expect from Mr. Calk.(aka the freaking man!)
Anyways, i DO get a random reboot here or there and for some reason go locker isn't super-ceding my stock locker sometimes..I didnt have this issue with the re-calked rom, and was wondering if golocker/golauncher is even compatible with ICS builds..

[Q] I need in depth real help figuring this out

So to start I have Fibromyalgia and as a result I have trouble understanding and doing some things. I have the epic 4g touch and recently it was running horribly, so I thought about restoring it and trading it in at best buy mobile, well even doing that I don't have enough money for a new phone so f*ck them.
So now my phone is restored, stock, unrooted and I need someone to help me figure out what rom to use because I need to theme it because the stock UI makes me want to vomit. I can't quite explain what I need or want all I know is I've previously tried just about everything and everything had some sort of a problem but it's been months so I don't know if anything new will do what I want or not. I just can't figure it out and need someone with patience and time to help me go step by step figuring out what to do.
I appreciate your help immensely.
The guy who will walk you thru it step by step is qbking77 and his YouTube videos. He also covers a lot of different roms in his videos. I suggest starting there and then asking questions once you decide on a rom.

What are you looking for in general? GB, ICS or JB? TW themed or AOSP/CM based? Toss out some ideas of what you're looking for theme and function wise and ill help you find something that fits you, even tho it might not happen on the first try cuz you may find something in the rom that bugs you or doesn't work that doesn't affect me.

ok, I hate ICS prefer G no idea what JB is...... Don't know about theme based.... all I know is I use LauncherPro and I have my wallpapers for background and widgetlocker lockscreen. I really wish I could manage MIUI to work because that's the only ICS I don't mind because you can do so much but it just refuses to work on my phone. I also can't OTA update my phone for ANYthing, even with it fully stock and unrooted it gets not even half way then stops and shows a triangle with ! I'm actually thinking of just selling this damn thing and going for the III because a friend has one and it's much prettier so I won't feel the need to go crazy changing things. I just don't have it in me to deal with such a vast phone. Give me too much rope and I'll just hang myself with it. I tried Calkulin ROM last time and it worked for a bit until everything was just ****, freezing rebooting not getting calls.... I just want a phone to do what I want it to!!! I tried starburst and it did nothing, haven't tried miui in awhile.... never had any luck with Cyanogenmod whatsoever. I don't understand how phones all made the same way can be so different and temperamental like people? wtf is the point of buying a specific phone if your friends does this awesome thing but you have the exact same phone and you can't!!!!

JB is jelly bean android 4.1.x the newest build. ICS has come a long way on this phone since the ff18 ota. Cm9 is really stable now that its on beta1. For TW themed I'd suggest blu kuban as it seems to be a forum favorite. I personally prefer aisle/cm based roms. I run aokp or paranoid android for the customization, theme manager makes changing the look as simple as installing an app, selecting it in themes and rebooting. from the symptoms you're describing with your issues and loading new roms seem to be from "dirty" flashing, not fully wiping in recovery before flashing the rom.

When flashing a new rom, make sure you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache(under advanced menu in cwm) otherwise the issues you described pop up, Force closes, random reboots, lagging, freezing etc. Also make sure to use a "safe" recovery, there are several choices but I prefer el26+cwm5 or twrp.

SlimBean Help

I really don't know where to begin. I was on Goodness, and wanted to try a JB Rom, and really screwed things up. I got everything fixed, odin flashed a FK23 with Agat's recovery, and was set to go SlimBean. This is where I learned a very valuable lesson. When you select "format SD card" on Agat's recovery, he really means "you're an idiot for formatting your external sd card with all the backup files you've saved for the last umpteen roms you've flashed" I know this now, I only hope I save the problem for one of you.
I've finally got it working -- had to mount and download what I thought would fix it, and pretty much ticked off the wife for a weekend of vacation. Here's my current dilemma: Not sure if it's the setup, wrong modem, wrong kernel - etc, but SlimBean is really giving me some problems. Granted, the problems were mostly created from having nothing to start with (no backup of files, settings, nandroid fallback, etc).
Here's what I'm running:
Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version: S710.10 S.FI27
Kernal version: 3.0.61-cyanogenmod [email protected] #7 Tue Feb 5 08:13:06 CST 2013
Slim Version Slim-4.2.1.RC.1.2-20130202-0259-UNOFFICIAL
Build Number J0P40D
Problems I'm having:
1. serious connection to mobile data issues. About half the time I get no connection with I click on a link.
2. I can't find where to update PRL, or Profile (and have poor reception in places where I had decent reception)
3. I flashed the exit_only rotation fix, but the screen still doesn't rotate very well. Sometimes it works, sometimes it is 180 degrees off
4. I may be an old guy (43), but I set the font to "Huge" and still can't read much (I don't wear glasses, other than occasional 1.0 reading glasses, and recently had my eyes checked)
5. Several regularly used apps (Mixology, and AWESOME drink recipe/liquor store finding app - I'm a drunk; Noom Weight Loss Coach - I'm a fatty) say my devise is not compatible with this version.
6. Whenever I reboot, there is a large triangle on the bottom of the GSII boot screen.
I wanted to fry a JB rom, mainly because of Google Now. Is there a stable ICS rom with Google Now?
Can someone help? Are my connection problems caused by wrong modem/kernel? is there a better combination?
If you're currently running a rom without any of these issues -- hit me up with your setup. Now that I have a rom with recovery, I want to flash only zip flashes -- stick with what you know.
From one older drunk to another, (I'm 54) your way over your head when it comes to your phone. You're playing with to much "flashmatash"on your phone, which is why your getting into hot water with wifey.
You need to keep it simple, this way your phone works all the time and your wife won't accuse you of ignoring her.
Custom rom = messing and tinkering with your phone constantly.
Stock rom = reliable phone, whenever and wherever plus happy wife.
Here's a solution for you, sextape in epic touch development, no it's not porn! It's stock/rooted Jb GB08, this runs great. The end result is a reliable phone with good to great battery life. And google now also.:thumbup::thumbup:
Now here's the catch, you have to do the one click rooted restore.
You cannot use no data, your phone will take a crap on you and you'll never hear the end of it.
Coming from a custom rom you most likely have data and code that's all borked up, plus the partitions need to be reset from wacky ics to Jb, this is why you do rooted restore.
The better your phone runs the more time you have for others. And for yourself.:beer::beer::thumbup:
