I am curious about the performance of E4gT vs sgh-i957 - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Ok, I have been given a sgh-i957 Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE on AT&T for work and it's Nvidia Tegra 2 or Qualcomm Snapdragon Dual-core at 1.5 GHz with Honeycomb and TouchWiz is ungodly laggy and slow. First off, I know I am comparing a tablet to a phone but I am curious how the S4gT with current release and its 1.2 GHz Samsung Exynos C210 dual-core compares. I am very worried it is just the in-efficiency of Android and I am wondering if I should wait for a quad core phone like the LG Optimus G. Or if the versions of the Operating Systems are to blame. I know most of us here have customized one way or another but I am hoping someone can remember how it was before they made their device awesome. The Wimax vs. LTE issue doesn't bother me because even though Sprint swears they have LTE here in Houston a lot of people are reporting their LTE phone's are on 3g more. This will help me determine if I sign a contract today for a new phone or wait until the LG Optimus G comes out. On a side note I can do nothing custom to the work supplied tablet, LOL.

The Exynos SoC in the S2's is very fast and the Mali graphics are generally equal to that in the USA S3's. This phone shows little to no lag in any situation that I've found.

lol, how?

This phone is just super fast, smooth, and out performs almost every other phone on the market.
The Exynos chip is just awesome.
Only the newest phones can out perform this phone. In my opinion this is better than the Galaxy Tab, better then every other S2 variant, better than the iPhone 4S...

I myself haven't experienced the ungodly lag you speak of sir, and I usually go back to stock every once in a while. You could wait, LG has made some awesome improvements to their devices to actually call them smartphones. I lover this phone but I am going nexus myself but that's just me

The OG i9100 and the i777 might have a word with you as they also have the same chip set as us but also includes NFC. But typically it's pretty much acknowledged that the GS2 roflstomped all the competition last year upon its release in terms of raw power. Other manufacturers came close to it though with 720p displays and sped up S3 soc's.
The reign of the GS2 only truly ended upon the release of the HTC 1x with it's S4 / Tegra 3 which was last april. So in essence. The S2 ruled the landscape for almost a year and was in a completely different class of performance. The Tegra 2 / S3 were far behind the 4210.

The lag is on my tablet, I am asking if the phone has the same problem, Sorry if there was any confusion.

Yeah I guess the I777 and I9100 both have the Exynos chip also...
I'll change what I said to include those devices.
Any Galaxy S II that comes with the Exynos CPU is a beast and there was no competition until the international S3 and the OX was released.

Thanks guys, you have been really helpful.

How would you compare the Galaxy Nexus to the Epic 4g Touch performance wise? It looks like the price for the upgrade is 49.96 not .96 cents and I can get the Galaxy Nexus for the same price so I was just curious.

I would say the Epic 4G Touch is better specs wise, but the Galaxy Nexus is better software wise.

How would you compare the camera on the E4gT and the SGS3?

I never used the camera on the S3 but they are both 8MP. So I imagine the quality is the same.

Sgs3 has better low light performance, less shutter lag, and it works overall a lot better. Not to say the s2 has a bad camera, it's amazing. Just not quite where the s3 is. You were asking about the gnex versus the s2? Obviously a
being a nexus the gnex gets better software updates, but speed wise it's a joke. Worse processor. Worse gpu, terrible camera, terrible battery life, pentile screen, etc etc. However if I had a choice I would STILL go with the gnex because I really do value software that much

The E4GT is very smooth and not laggy, unlike the Galaxy 8.9 Tab. I used that Tablet several times when working on it for my friend and its lagginess and slow responses were really irritating.

So I bought a Galaxy Nexus earlier today...

...and I might return it. I really am not terribly impressed with it. ICS is cool and all but I would much rather have a bone stock ICS ROM running on my Epic Touch. My biggest complaint about it, besides how narrow the screen is, is that games just don't run nearly as smooth on it as they do on the E4GT. I know it has a weaker GPU, but I didn't realize it wasn't powerful enough to run Riptide GP without dropping frames all the time. Pretty disappointing, TBQH. Verizon has an extended buyers remorse period because of the holidays. I am going to hang on to it till Jan 14th and give it a serious chance but so far it's not looking good.
edit: Oh yeah, I HATE how the home/back/tasks soft keys persist even when playing games. That's the main reason why I returned my Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus, and I can't tell you how disappointed I am that they are still there in ICS.
Such a shame that the Galaxy Nexus is such a let down. My friend has one so I played around with his for an hour or so. There was some choppiness during transitions here and there. Only reason I'd pick it over an Epic Touch is because it's a Nexus device. But since it's not available for Sprint it's not a phone I'd buy.
It has the gpu of the galaxy s1, that may explain why it doesn't hum like our phone. The ti processor is very good, perhaps >= exynos but the gpu kills it.
Only thing I love is the screen (except that the on screen buttons can't be toggled) and ICS, seems like the colors are more real. In every other aspect, I have to go with the S2 (minus the tmo and skyrocket variants)

I played around with my coworker's GNex and I think its nice and all, but......
I can't stand the lack of search button and the lack of a menu button. I felt like I was using a Pre or iPhone, I couldn't find out where the flippin' options were easily (I know that most have a little menu button in the top corner, but that's not apparent to me). Try to get to settings quickly? you can't without finding that app for settings. I also found it pretty laggy compared to my E4GT.
I do like the core app GUI changes, however. Very nice. The phone itself though....meh.

The downside if exynos is Android does not natively support it. So every time Google releases an os, Samsung has to port it which is no small task.

You guys do realize the iphone does not utilize 4G so the processor can be the same across the board. However, android phones do use 4G and not all networks are created equal (ex: HSPA+ FOR T-mo). Hence, the different specs.

The 4 is an A2 CPU and idk what gpu its running. The 4s is running an A3, is dual core, and beefier gpu. The iPad 1 and iPhone 4 use the same CPU, that's why there are jailbreaks available for them. IPad 2 and iPhone 4s share the same CPU. Its speculated its clocked higher on the pad. There also isn't a jailbreak for the A3 powered devices. There's no difference in hardware between the carriers of the same model phone. All 4 are the same and all 4S are the same.
I had a 4S for a couple of months on sprint before coming back to Android. I did some homework before and during owning the phone too.
I understand aosp is different than touchwiz. One alternative I could suggest is to get the et4g. Root, recovery and no ciq it after updating to ek02. After that, run sprint id and choose the clean pack. That is a bare bones setup, stockish launcher, and no touchwiz. Then go into the system/app directory and do something like add ".old" to the end of the apk of the bloatware and touchwiz crap. Now you have a pseudo asop looking ROM with the bloat rem'd out.

About the only thing i saw skimming that wouldn't make it for sure is the screen.
Doubling the ram isnt crazy at all. 12MP while not even desirable due to image noise is pretty low considering the HTC Titan II and others are sporting 16MP sensors. 2 Ghz A9 dual core is available pushing it a little but hey.
12 megapixels actually can be pretty good. It isnt all about megapixels. My wife has a 500 dollar Canon that is only 14. I am pretty sure our 8 megapixel is better than a lot of phones.
On my Epic mobile phone.
I think that is the Sprint LTE phone to get. My SGS2E4GT will last me until there is LTE in my area. By then the GNex will be old news. SGS3 will be my upgrade.
I hated 3D. I got an EVO 3D before and is not good watching a full movie. It hurts your eye. Why not change the screen size to match the galaxy note.
Rumors or not that image is awesome..
Go a little stronger on the radios this time Samsung... kthx.
Reality S3 probably:
1.5 Quadcore - 12MP Camera - 16/32GB - 2GB Ram
Wishful S3:
2.5GB Quadcore - 16MP camera - 32/64GB - 2/3GB Ram
What will make me say WOW is if I could replace my laptop and be able to handle medium to light heavy processing power of a laptop (probably s4)... Until then it's business as usual.
If that's true, I'm starting to save right now.

Those specs are nice, but they better make sure the radios they user are to of the line with no GPS issues or loss of signal problems and slow 3g.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII EPIC 4g Touch on XDA Premium!
We have to remember we're dealing with a phone manufacturer AND processor maker here. It all depends on which route Samsung decides to go with their processors...the Nvidia route, and racing to add more cores; or the qualcomm route, and trying to improve and refine their dual cores. Both ways offer benefits.

I want to upgrade my phone, which one do you recommend?

Hi,
I have a Samsung Vibrant and want to upgrade my phone to Galaxy S II, now do you guys recommend the T-Mobile version or the international version?
Please don't consider only the phone but also the future ROM development also.
Thanks in advance
specs wise I recommend the Tmobile one because of higher process speeds. and for development, I haven't really looked into the international version but the att skyrocket is the same phone as this so whoever gets a better ROM 1st , both sides win because they are compatible with eachother

I don't know too much about the international version but I believe you will get better data speeds with the Tmobile version depending on your area but the processor is better in the international version.
I recommend going with the international phone. If you are curious about development, check out the forums of each device and see what you like. The international version will also get official updates faster.

I came from a Vibrant. Went GNexus then went to GS2 today.
I used the Gnexus for about a 9 days and already the GS2 seems way snappier (using the Juggernaut 4.1) Can't say about the battery life on it yet, but with the GNexus I was able to get full day with a single charge with wifi on all day.
Enterrpise email on push along with gmail and hotmail. sms/mms/listen to podcast for about 3.5 hours.
I'll have more details with the gs2 (T989) in the next couple of days.
Why would you get the international version when you would be stuck on edge speeds?

The 989 has a larger screen to play with. Not really a necessary thing to have but its nice. The processor on gs2 is alot better. Exynos processor. The only reason the 989 has a bigger number in processor is because its a qualcomm snapdragon. Which is sucks... lol. Exynos has better gpu and cpu control. The cameras the same. And yada. The data is better for tmobile since it is true 4G. (42 mbs) but i dont see using the data a whole lot unless you tether 24/7. But the lack of development in this community is just like the SGS4G. Honestly its cause this phone doesnt really need it. Once we get CM9 then you... Devs will work there asses off cause cm9 is the best and far more developed than stock. But its slow atm. Why Do you say Exynos is better? Any proof? at least gs2 is higher in GHz.
The exynos has a smoother transitions and i compared it to a sprint gs2 with an exynos processor. The game asphalt is noticeably smoother on the exynos processor. And number doesnt matter at all. Windows phones are still 1.0 ghz and not evem dula core and can do perfect with animations and games. Honeslty dual core is nonsense... But exynos is an all around better processor. If you dont believe me then go to a sprint store and play around with their gs2

So, I think I got the answer then.

How's the performance above a Tegra 2?

My G2X is showing its age and with the $400 price tag on Google Play this phone is looking pretty good. Thing is, I'm not sure if the performance boost is worth it.
So if anyone here has used that phone, or a Tegra 2 device in general, can you tell me what kind of improvement I might be looking at? Web browsing and maps/navigation mainly.

Easy. Pure stock Android on ice cream sandwich vs phone not being updated by its manufacturer. I'd make the upgrade regardless of its processor.

Most of the performance increases will come from the upgrade in RAM and the better software.
LG's ineptitude isn't the biggest deal, I don't run their stock rom. It could come into play with crap drivers though.

I had the g2x and the nexus is way better phone overall. My son has the g2x now and currently running EB ics. The screen alone on the nexus is a plus and the fact that it is directly supported by Google. Nvidia still hasn't released its drivers for g2x. Will be buying only nexus phones from now on.

Agreed with buying Nexus phones only. After going from G1 to a Samsung Vibrant... I already started regretting the purchase due to Samsung's poor implementation with the whole "RFS" and ext4 fiasco causing "lagfixes" and the #NeverAgain twitter protest.
Nexus phones all the way. It's the way Android meant to be made.
Do it man! I came from a G2x as well and this is WORLDS faster than the G2x. ICS on the G2x is no where near how it is here. The screen is better and development is 100x better. Guarantee you won't regret it.
Personally I like omap over tegra. I don't know the performance difference. But I'd definitely make the switch. Anandtech prob has a good benchmark comparison.

Especially at a price of $399.99, it's practically a steal!

Galaxy S4 Exynos 5450!!!

I knew it, im pretty sure this is real, the next S4 will be the most powerful device...Samsung Exynos 5450 @ 2.0 GHz Quad Core.

Unless they pack that 5" screen into the same size case, I'll pass.. Love the S3, but don't want a bigger case

4.8" vs 5.0" can u notice the difference? i dont think the phone dimension is gonna change just the 0.2" on the screen...

well Apple called .5 an amazing revolution, I'm sure samsung can get away with calling .2 a big leap haha
This could be true but based upon all the "leaked" specs that came out right up until the release of the S3, this may all be speculation.

Good lord! That would be awesome. Specs would be second to none.
And also the better build quality thing. Although the SIII gave Apple a run for its money, a better aesthetics quality build could finally put Apple to sleep (not saying that's Samsung's objective, other creating quality devices.) But I still know a few Apple fanboy stragglers who still won't switch because of the plastic quality of the S3. Maybe this will be the straw that breaks the camels back.

Better build quality for LG = subpar build quality for even HTC. Sorry, but LG makes ****ty phones. Horrible battery life especially. I'll stick to Sammy, thanks!
Can't wait I will be getting foe sure

Isn't it s4 going to have a dual core cortexa15 exynos like the nexus 10
That's what i thought
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Only if the s4 supports lte 800/1900/2500/2600 will I buy it. The s3 performance-wise is fast enough. The network...not so fast.

I don't want nothing with a exynos processor. look at the trouble the devs are having with the international s3

In all fairness, Samsung's responded and has been pushing source code out for Exynos CPUs. It does make future purchasers skeptical, though.

I doubt it. Google puts strong price constraints in nexus devices lately. And Samsung isn't gonna develop to there own just to keep a flag ship CPU out of a flag ship phone...... our phone strongly resembles a15 architecture basically it is
Bet on the most practical. Highest end compromise definitely quad core

Was s3 snappier than s2? No, even though it's almost twice faster in quadrant.
Samsung is gonna mess it up again, no doubt.
Only hope is for aosp roms.

are you stupid? the s3 is hella snappier than the s2 in every regard. have you even played with an s2?
Wait its not going to be quad core? I highly doubt that is true it would be a big fail on Samsung if they only had a dual IMO quad is becoming set standard with 2 gigs ram

the thing is with the build quality of samsung and apple from what i noticed is that the plasticy feel oh the phone actually makes it more durable against hard falls compared to apples iphone with its strong firm build of the device makes it more vulnerable when it comes to hard falls because the phone is actually pressurized to the point where one little fall can cause major damage to the iphone. so from that ill take a plastic feel of a phone against iphone build quality

Not only was it faster, it's way faster. Even faster than aosp, so your argument holds no grounds.

Great rebuttal not only faster but WAY faster.
I'm still holding onto my beloved S2, s3 wasnt much of an improvement for me. Plus gorilla glass2 sucks in my eyes.
Each to his/her opinion.
