[Q] Format and restore without a working touchscreen - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus and the internal digitizer screen went bad after it cracked. My phone turns on fine, but the touchscreen is rendered useless. Screen doesn't turn on, but I am able to boot into the internal sd card portion of the phone via usb on mac and pc. Instead of me paying to buy a new screen I just want to sell this on ebay as is and recover my losses for the upcoming nexus 4. The problem is I don't want my personal info on it and unfortunately I was unable to setup the usb debugging mode prior to the screen cracking so screencast app won't work for me, I tried. Any ideas on how I can wipe my phone clean? Can this be done via odin? and if so how? Thanks for the heads up.

screen wont turn on...

i dropped my phone and since then the screen refuses to turn on. it seems like everything is working fine except the screen. calls are coming through and im able to answer the call as long as i swipe at the right spot. is this something that can be fixed instead of swapping out the phone? if this cant be fixed and i have to get a new unit, can the sprint technicians be able to somehow transfer everything over to the new phone? btw, my phone is rooted with cwm installed and nandroid backed up to internal storage since i have no sd card installed.
If you can connect via USB you can grab the data from internal storage possibly, but it sounds like, at best, your display has a hardware issue ( strange that the touch works but the display doesn't)
But I see a trip to the phone store in your future.
If you can, I'd recommend booting to the boot loader (pwr-voldown) and using Odin to flash a stock from first so you can at least have the chance of getting a warranty replacement. ("Not sure what happennes, the screen just doesn't work anymore...")
Good luck.

Sounds like something with the connection between the LCD and the motherboard. You could get lucky and only have to reconnect the LCD's ribbon connection, however, if the LCD is cracked in any way, it would have to be a replacement, that is, if they allow replacements on cracked LCDs. Every ASC location is different. The only way to transfer anything would be to connect it to a PC, like he said in the above post, and hope it connects as USB storage by default. Copy everything to the desktop and then drag-and-drop onto the new phone's storage. But dude, get an SD card. It really makes EVERYTHING so much easier when transferring to a new phone.
The LED back light system and the touchscreen are independent of each other. Sounds to me like the connection to the back lights and the power got disconnected.

that is exactly what it seems like. can i take it into a sprint store and have it repaired or do i need to send it off?
As long as there is no physical damage then I would say its repairable. If you have ever seen a smartphone dissembled you should go check it out on you tube. Alot of the connectors are very small and easily popped out.

Broken Screen NEED pictures

Alright guys I give up trying to think of ways on my own to fix this but a couple weeks ago I had my phone in my lap while I was in my car. Got out. Screen shattered, not touch responsive what so ever. My phone isnt rooted (stupid move on my part). It is stuck on a lock screen. Im not sure if USB debugging is on or not. When I plug it into my computer (mac or windows (8) ) nothing pops up so I am assuming its on charge mode... It is connected to wifi when I turn it on if that helps any?? and I am also pretty sure it is still somehow connected to the play store if that helps any?? I need these photos I have alot of once in a life time moments on this phone.... and yes I now have a G+ automatticly uploading from my new phone any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your help and time,
Tim
Because of the protection, yoi cant pull the photos with screen broken
If you press vol up + pwr the phone will enter service mode and media content can be pulled out. But it says service center only. So i don't know if you need a special software for it.
Another way would be to install Lg onscren and use the program to browse the content.
But this works only on stock rom.

The onscreen wont connect, because phone rejecting any connections with screen locked.
And you cannot unlock it with screen broken lol
I had a similiar situation, and i had everything turned on (adb, mtp etc). Still nothing of this worked
Why you dont just replace your screen?
They will not wipe your phone, in my case they just replaced the screen in front of me and thats it.
Have you tryed with "on screeen phone" from LG

Install this, it will give you the interface on your PC

Yah I have tried the onscreen and hes right it wont work because its locked. And I have thought about replacing the screen. About how much does it usually cost and would it be cheaper to do it myself?? is it hard? sounds scary to be honest.

Have you tried Moborobo and use its file manager USB debugging must be on. It worked for me with a cracked screen and no touch and locked Optimus G.
I'm sure my USB debugging is on.
I've also ordered a OEM LG Optimus G E975 LCD Screen and Digitizer Assembly with Front Housing from etrade supply.
There are videos on YouTube on how to pull the phone apart.
Hope this helps.

Ok second question and I swear I am done I got all my pictures off and then deleted everything that was possible to delete in that program. I saw there is a backup/restore functions. If I can find the original system file that came on the phone (which I havent researched it yet but) could I use that restore function to whip everything clean and do like a "factory reset" in order to get all my information off it to resell it as broken??

I cant remember where I got the program from. I think i installed from some firmware update folders for some android devices.
And it auto starts when a I connect my phone to my PC. So it was only by chance that i tried it.
Regarding the backup/restore function i cant help you there. If you have another device try it on that.
Hi,
I'm having the same issue, except I did not manage to have debug mode enabled. Is there any way to pull files off the phone via "Download Mode" or am I just out of luck on this one?
Thanks

I apologize for that last post. It's completely stock, not unlocked or rooted. Running most current software and firmware from LG. WiFi is still enabled on the phone and I can ping it from my desktop, but I cannot get MTP or usb debugging to turn on since I can't get the touch screen to work.
Let me know if you need any more info.
I have this problem without USB debugging enabled when plugged in to pc i cannot accept to make it accessible from the pc since my screen is broken. Anything i can do to take off these very important pictures please help. im on stock rom no root no bluetooth on.

[Q] Broken digitizer/screen - swap motherboard chip to retrieve data?

I know similar questions have been asked before but here's my situation. Massive fight on the phone with the g/f ended up with my Desire HD screen smashed out of anger. The phone turns on, I hear the HTC intro music, the LEDs light up but the screen is black and non-responsive (based on using power key to light up screen but constant tapping of screen won't stop it going off).
The phone is not rooted nor on USB debugging mode. I can't sync it with my laptop or myphoneexplorer. From reading various threads I think its a lost cause to try to connect to it so I'm looking at the other option. Is it possible to physically take the internal memory out of the phone and have it installed onto a working phone just so I can take all the data off it? Has anyone made something like that?
Why not take it to repair shop and get new screen put in?
The option to remove memory chip is going to be hard and risky and reading data on it might be a problem too.
Like you said it turns on and works go get new screen...

I know, I've been quoted £80 to fix it but the phone isn't worth that much though I guess my data is!

5T with broken/black screen - need help switching to MTP

Hey XDA Family,
I've been searching everywhere even here but I need help. My phone was dropped and the screen is broke/black. It still works as I can receive calls and able to answer with headphones. LED lights still work.
I have previously enabled USB debugging but never switched to default USB behavior to MTP. It's set for USB charging.
My goal is to use Vysor to view my phone screen and kinda-sorta semi use it temporarily until I can replace/fix it.
Some other tidbits - it was powered off and on - so it's on that initial screen where it requires Pattern Unlock.
Am I SOL? ADB doesn't recognize any device (and it won't because it's not in MTP mode).
Is there any tool I can use to force switch to MTP? I read stuff about Miracle-box.... not sure if that will work.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
I am still stuck. I tried ADB once again but still no go.
Even if there's a way to factory reset the phone so that the lock screen is removed may help. Remember, I have no screen. to view.
Has anyone heard of an OTG adapter that has an HDMI out so that potentially I can connect a monitor?
Thanks again.
Through Fastboot/ADB
If you have TWRP installed (command line should work if recovery doesn't work) it sometimes gives access to the storage when in recovery mode (hoping you don't have a password). If you turn off the phone then start into bootloader (power + volume up) then from your PC use the fastboot commands to restart in recovery (https://tektab.com/2015/10/31/android-bootloaderfastboot-mode-and-recovery-mode-explained/).
Once you think you're in recovery try to connect the USB and see if it picks up the storage.
If that fails you can try to do the same stuff using the adb commands instead of the fastboot commands, it's a little trickier but i think you should be able to use an adb pull command to extract the files from your phone, if you get it to work then you can also reset the phone to factory through the commands. This way you won't give whoever is fixing it access to all your data.

If the phone itself isn't broken you can always order a replacement screen and either replace it yourself or have someone who knows how to do so, unless you had planned on getting a new phone.
Thanks, I'll try that and let you know if it worked.
I wasn't planning on replacing my phone... just fixing the display.
It's been a week now and I am still trying to scrounge up the cash to get it fixed.
Anyone know how much OnePlus charges for an official replacement? I have a phone repair shop nearby that quoted me $155 (USD). Seemed a bit pricey.

I'd see if you can pay them to just install the screen, I went to a local shop about a year ago and they charged $35 for just the labor, as I already had the parts. The screen is like $150 or so on ifixit, which is about right for an OLED like the 5t has.

Data backup - phone on, screen broken, touch not working

Hello,
As you probably already read in the title I have a problem. Yesterday my loving MI6 fell on a stone and the screen broke. Fortunately the phone is still on.
The Screen will go on but I can only see pink lines and no image. Touch is not working. The fingerprint sensor seems to work randomly (I get a vibrate feedback) but I guess because of the cracks it doesn’t recognize my fingerprint.
My biggest concern now is to get the data of my phone. Of course, just connecting it to a computer doesn’t work because I would have to unlock the phone and set it to data transfer. Right now the computer recognizes the phone but the drive doesn’t show anything.
I thought about booting into TWRP and connecting it to the computer but TWRP also requires an unlock which I cannot try because of the broken touch.
Any ideas how I can get my data back?
Are there any adb commands that I can use?
I am on LOS15 (TWRP installed).
Thank you for your help!
Update:
Just wanted to let anyone know who get stuck with the same problem. I couldn’t get the data from the phone. I tried several things with data rescue tools and remote control tools for android but nothing worked.
So in the end I bought a new LCD screen on eBay and replaced it. Phone works great again and eventually I was able to access all my data.
