So Squaretrade (I think?) did a drop test with the iPhone 4s vs Galaxy SII (not our version but they are similar in build I would assume). Be warned, it hurts to see our phone fall but it fared VERY well compared to the iPhone 4s.

In your face Apple...........of course not very scientific. But I don't like Apple products anyways.
You know that your vaping signature banner is setting off google chrome warnings? It doesn't want to let anyone access the page because apparently that site is known for distributing malware.
I did my own drop test yesterday. 2 ft right onto the upper left corner.
No issues other than a scuff mark!
Where the hell is my case I ordered?
i saw this vid a couple days ago. The test with the ipad, zoom, galaxy Tab was pretty cool too. These things are way too fragile.
I am happy to see that Samsung products had the best results. Take that iphoney
Thats cool the screen stood up to the test. The bezel can't pass my pocket test, there's already some substantial dings on mine and I baby my stuff. Way more prone to stuff like this than the Sensation was. Definitely get a case if you're questioning it........

I like to think of it this way: IPhones are more for young children, old people and those who are not technically inclined (and have no interest in being so)... Or for people who don't care about being able to customize or tweak it much on the software level, they just want it "to work".

That was painful to watch, even as much as I hate iPhones >.<
Iphones remind me of those brightly colored toy laptops from Toys R Us. Kids see mommy & daddy with their laptops & they want one too, but they can't quite handle a real computer so they just get a toy that makes them feel important
Why does everyone feel they need to compare to apple. It keeps proving they make better products and we are all chasing to be like them. Don't give apple the credit.

Just to be on the record, I saw this as more of an interest in seeing what happens when our phone drops to the ground. I honestly don't care much about what happens to an iPhone, as I don't own one. I know other posters are bashing apple which is fine with me (I could care less), but I took some useful information out of this and have much less worry using this phone day to day with or without a case now with the knowledge that it can take a beating and still come out fighting strong.

I agreed with him about the screen issue: the Apple display is very good even if the technology is used in Android devices. It could well be the way it was rendered. However, his other points were snide and almost sounded like he was trying to find any means to hide his envy and make up lame excuses.
Other than ios, Apple has nothing going on it that couldn't be made available on Android devices.

Sounds 110% wrong to me, as of 1.6 android UI elements scale using density independent pixels (dip or dp) which make elements appear the same size whether on a high density screen or a low density screen.
Take into consideration launchers, put the same launcher on an ldpi device or a hdpi device and independent of screen size each element takes up the same % of real estate on the screen.
Images, depending on the app, don't scale unless they have a repeating pattern and are 9patched, but this isn't a big deal as you get different icon sets built into android and most apps (hdpi high density icons, mdpi medium density icons, etc). Btw nobody can scale an image without distorting it other than svg etc, that's why there's different size icons for different screens.
My last comment is that while UI elements may not have a visible difference, on a higher resolution screen when looking at a TextView or a list view for example, you will still see more list items or more of the text view
Long story short, the author of that article should do research before making such claims. The reason android phones have bigger screens (and lets be honest, there are 3.5in android phones too) is because the manufacturers make them that way and most consumers prefer it that way.
Although I'm not surprised to see an iPhone user make up claims that aren't true and post them on the intetwebz.
And oh yes, android like windows or osx is silly, for iPhones I'm sure its similar, but scaling isn't really an issue for the iPhones as they all come in one size or few sizes.

Apple had a big fat contract from a year+ ago with a hardware manufacturer that they have to fulfill. Which is why they released the 4s with the same screen as the 4. Lame-o. Can't wait to sell my fiance's iphone 4.

Reading the comments is funny than reading the article. You know, I hate the term Isheep, because I just think name calling is just not called for in most situation. People use the device they use because they like them. But when you read a comment that says, you look silly with a 4" phone to your face like it is the 90's, or it is not practical for daily use. The only explanation is because they are sheep. When Apple comes out with their 4" screen they are going to be talking about how great it is, and it will be because they will see how much easier it is to use a 4", 4".3 and 4".5 than they think.
I see just as many people who are likely myself, 6'4" 230 pounds man and women 5'4" less than a buck fifty with 4" phones and they love them. They have no problem carrying them (hell most of the women carry purses with 5 pounds of junk in them) and they use them like they would use any other phone.
Now I a big apply fanboy when it came to my Ipod. I had five or 6 of them over the years and I still use my Ipod touch as a podcasting listening device, even though I could use my phone. But I use my phone a hell of a lot more than my ipod for reading books, simply because with a 4" screen it is almost the size as reading on a paper back. Whenever I try to read something on my Ipod touch I have to put it much closer to my face.
Just look at this comment. There are so many mistruth in there that it make me laugh, he clearly never really used a 4" phone
Quote:
"It's not bull****, it's the biggest truth of android phones.
They are so un practical for daily use and even keeping it on pocket.
But above all it's impossible to use them while driving. There is no home button so while driving you have to go on top or to the side to wake up the phone and them slide the stupid thing and then go through of bunch of pages of quick launch and look for that app and if weather is sunny you can't even see the screen because of poor resolution.
Mind you I tried to use 4 top android phones and threw those rocks on best buy reps face and akmost scream " give my beloved I phone back "
And minutes I hold my iPhone, I was happy like a baby.
At the end android phone might be big but they are no good for people who likes the best of best .
Just think for a second why apple did not included 4G chip, because they no that there is no small chip in the market which can fit in iPhone and the battery will be a big issue.
Android just sucks on battery."
End Quote
The only truthful thing I find about the comment is the battery life, but you get use to it after using it for awhile and you can get multiple batteries and swap them out whenever you need to, so this is really a non issue for the most part.
I really dont understand why people have to have this Us vs Them mentality in just about everything we as a species do. Sometimes humanity disappoints me.
Having had both the iPhone 4/4S and Galaxy S/S2, I like both the higher resolution of the iPhone 4S and the screen size of the Galaxy S2 (Galaxy S, even). Browsing typical pages, or anything with text really, makes the iPhone screen shine IMO, wheres watching video and typical use is something that I prefer to do on the E4GT.
I would call it a wash, though I picked the Epic Touch for other reasons altogether.
My ideal realistic screen would be a 4.3" 720P... that magically expands to 4.5-5.0" when watching video. Forget pentile display, this is erectile D:
I don't understand why they think the manufacturers make big screens is because of the software lol.

yeah, I was planning on upgrading to the Sprint GNx, but, even though I swore up and down that I wouldn't get locked into a non-nexus device again I'm going to make a liar of myself and get the Galaxy Note if and when that comes to Sprint...The phone is thin, huge resolution, huger screen. I'm tall, have big hands...this phone already gets lost in my pocket to the point where I can't tell if I remembered to put it back in my pocket or not--even with the Sprint hybrid case.
I was considering getting an iPhone 4S too...to switch back and forth. I'm no platform fanboy. I spend equal time between Win7 and OSX (hackintosh) and the occasional Linux...the best tool for the job. But a 3.5" screen, no matter the resolution, just seems unpalatable to me. Sure, the phone feels fantastic in the hand, but--all quibbles about the OS aside--it's just to damn small.
I have average sized hands. The iphone is too small and very awkward in my hand. The screen is too small. I got this Galaxy S2 and put a big Ballstic case on it so it's easier to hold. I dislike when a person lies about my intentions or opinions.
The iphone is a pain the butt to use. One thing open at a time? Pff! That means it takes forever to get something done. I'm limited by my S2 only having 8 browser windows open at a time. Forget 1 thing TOTAL.
Looking for a place to eat? That means the yelp app, google maps, and the navigation app all open at once. Takes longer than a desktop, and yeah, I'm a gaming desktop snob, but I'm very happy to see that finally smart phones are decent. I held out until a month ago to get my first smart phone and yet I work in IT. I explain all that because I cannot imagine owning an iphone. Just so much work to use.
Now to search for a fix for having to reset my browser preference to view 'desktop' sites every time I open it.
We ALL know the real reason....
Steve J had small hands.
Most of the iPhone fans excuses didn't make sense at all.

Android phones are bigger than iPhones because they're - get this - bigger than iPhones.
I got a new red s3 a few days ago and other than not being able to check for ot updates, I really like it. However, I have one big concern that has me wondering if maybe I should swap it out for a One X ($79.88 at wal mart). If Apple ends up winning the court case against Samsung, what will happen as far as future updates/upgrades/support? If Apple wins, apparently th s3 will be banned from future sales. And since they have already taken the local search function away, what other features are we likely to lose just to appease Apple?
Samsung and Apple will battle in court for the foreseeable future. The sgiii isn't going to get barred from being sold, at least not for any significant amount of time.

I got mine
Apple already put a stop to sales of one of Samsung's tablets. The s3 is next on their list. But I already have one so that part doesn't concern me. What does concern me is support for the s3 if Samsung is banned from selling it. It is hard to imagine them supporting a product that they can't sell. Plus, if the software is also banned (local search), will they even be able to support it if they want to?
Umm they really don't have anything to go after the SGS3 for. It is not rectangular, it does not have uniform corners, and TouchWiz does not look like iOS, so what could the possible ban it for?
I know
I feel the same way. But you know how it is. I couldn't believe that Samsung took away the local search but they did. Apparently, pretty much everything from the icons to the touch screen is copied from Apple. But the s3 with its physical home button is the first Android powered phone to outsell the iPhone. Therefore it must go. Like I said, Apple got the Nexus tablet banned because it was too much like the iPad. I just don't want to be stuck with a phone that is constantly being stripped down bit by bit or completely removed from the market and nit supported at all. It's funny, though. The Apple TV sure looks like a Samsung to me. I wonder if Samsung will sue Apple?

You are on xda, you shouldnt worry about that. Devs here will do everything to add features back. atleast the common sense ones.
Even if something as far-fetched as banning the S3 does occur, I doubt that they would simply just stop supporting a device that sold over 10 million units.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
I mean really, Apple does not have nothing to stop the SGS3. The phone was designed to avoid being stopped by Apple. and even then, if they try to stop it via software, they cant, because all it takes is a software patch. hence the Galaxy Nexus.
When it comes down to it, Apple is scared. Android is light years better and they know it. They know that Google made an OS to rival theirs and did it better. So, if you can't beat the competition, then sue (sp.) their butt off! Apple will ALWAYS be a fanboy market...meaning all the die-hard robots that will do/buy whatever Apple tells them too. Meanwhile, Google will keep innovating and making their mobile OS truely the best on the market today.
ahh the beauty of living in canada us patents dont apply here! yippee! never have to worry about any of these stupid lawsuits. :good:
though even if they win, they cant really touch the sgs iii, apple is mainly targeting older samsung phones which imo did blatantly copy apple (talking about like the galaxy s originaly) , they have changed a lot since those days. id be surprised if they had any dirt on the siii.
They are scared of Samsung itself. They know that Samsung copied the iPhone, and lets be honest here, they copied the dam iPhone, but they produced a product a million times better than the iPhone.
Samsung has some great technology, which is why its one of Apple's "Key Partners". I have owned three Samsung devices in the last year and they all were really good. Samsung has what it takes, but it is being limited by Apple. Why do you think the SGS3 is so ugly looking? To avoid Apple and its lawsuits.

Apple deserves to win this case. Look at the points and cases they are bringing up against the Galaxy S 1. The UI was completely ripped off of them. In addition, Samsung's lawyers are a bunch of jackasses in court (read the Verge if you dont know what Im talking about). Now... some of the new patents Apple is getting are utter bull****. I was pissed when they tried to ban the GNex because of the search patent .

Guys you cant ban something that already has tens of millions in the wild. Apple is definitely worried, because Steve only left them so much on his notes he kept and the iphone train is going to run out of steam after the next 2 iphones you mark my words, that is all he left them.
Buy another phone if you want, nothing in life is certain, but I would not worry one minute and use the phone you want now. Its already the best thing out there as is, once JB rolls out its a done deal. They have a removable battery and SD slot, doesnt sound like an iphone clone to me...And who cares if they ban the S1, its a totally different phone and old as hell to boot, it aint gonna happen. They must stop it before its released or it just doesnt work.

Why do you need support from Samsung? Just root and install custom roms, my old HTC Hero on Telus took over a year to get an update from 1.6 to eclair, but by then I was already running a custom rom.
I didn't mean to start an apple vs Samsung vs one x discussion. Honestly, I am amazed at how far mobile phones have come since I got my first Motorola Star Tac when I was in the military. I am just concerned about the future of my s3 in the event that apple wins in court. That said, I can see where apple is coming from. However, without competition from other manufacturers, there will be very few more advancements in the industry. Especially if every time someone produces a product that may or may not be better than apple, apple sues that company into submission. Imagine how it would be if car companies did the same thing. Or even something as simple as clothes detergent. My concern is not whether or not Samsung "will" support the s3 but whether not they will be able to due to restrictions placed on them by the courts that may prevent them from having the ability to support and improve on the s3

Hey, I've been living with a iPod Touch as a make shift phone and it has its ups and downs. The up being the MP3 player of the iPod being far superior, the down is the hell called iTunes. Question: Can I live with iTunes? Ans: I may buy a gun, put one bullet through my PC and then probably me too before I can answer that question with a straight face and say yes. And no. I miss a lot of Android. The copied notification shade is a big sham (though they implemented it different to Android, I can't make it work like I can on the Droid.) you can't access the memory like on the Droid, each app can see only their stuff. No co-operation on the phone. No centralized accounts thingy. All things google can hang themselves. Nah, I give me a Nexus any day. A Dix will be fine too. Only thing I like on iOS is some of their gui graphics (only some, not all) as they look so glossy and chewable. I think that can be taken care of using MIUI.
Side note: Their new Maps seems to have a nicer interface (appearance wise) than Gmaps, but at least for now has no transit routes. Which is all I use maps for. Google should polish its Navigation app. The google maps app on the other hand looks clean and perfect on the Droid. (TL;DR)
Last year my wife got an iPhone and I got my Dinc2. I had very little in the way of iPhone envy and after I rooted and installed ICS, I had none whatsoever. My wife is pretty tech savvy, but she just wants things to work; I love to tinker. Over the past year, it's really been eye-opening for both of us because she struggles to change settings or do things that I don't even have to think about on my Android phone. She's regularly frustrated by Apple's control - even after jailbreaking. The iPad is even worse. I was tempted when the iPhone 4S came out, but after our experiences this year, me with my Dinc2 and her with the iPhone, I'm Android all the way. Even though I'm a die-hard Mac user, I wouldn't buy an iPhone or an iPad. Just my 2 cents.

Hair wondering when you had the iPod touch ? The new ios has where you can interconnect some accounts like fb, Twitter, and instagram which is all most people do anyways. Also, what kind of hell is iTunes? Just wondering on that one. But instead of saying they don't do something or lack an option android has make sure you jailbreak and look for the apps. It's not fair to compare rooted android vs stock ios.

BlackBerry has an enormous following in Canada. On the TTC every day I still see a massive amount of old blackberry devices. Because of our ridiculous 3 year contracts, you still have people using them and those people will likely upgrade to the new blackberrys simply because it's all they've ever known.
Also since they're a Canadian company they're going to have a customer base that by default will buy their products because of that factor.

BB would have to wow the world to get me to go back. People on here ask when is 4.1.2 coming to their device. On BB forums, people were asking (for years) when are we going to get a xx mp camera or xx gb memory? There were a series of imminent product releases that completely fell through.
Even the Z10 seems a little behind hardware-wise. For a company trying to claw back market share, they should have at least tried to beat some specs. I know internally, they'll say their users don't need 32gb memory, 10mp camera, or a quad core processor, but that's also why they've lost a lot of users. They've tried to be adequate and not exceptional for too long.
Long before I switched to Android, I posted on some BB forums what they needed to do to be competitive. The responses were always, BB owns the enterprise market, BB isn't going anywhere, those other phones aren't serious devices, people don't really use their camera, memory management is so good on BB you don't need more memory, etc. While those weren't company responses, it mirrored what the company seemed to think.
z10 is pretty slick actually. all this swiping around is much faster than android... when i use android i find myself swiping to no avail now

I personally don't see how swiping is any faster than pressing a physical home key tbh...
I played around with one and it was ok. Plus you're limited to 8 apps in memory.
I didn't find tasks any faster, just different
Not sure u will ever see the app support other than commercial app support

I personally think they built up hype themselves by sending people to stand in line and only releasing 4-5 per store. Sales figures don't show nearly what they are claiming.
There is a sticky for other device discussions
