I agreed with him about the screen issue: the Apple display is very good even if the technology is used in Android devices. It could well be the way it was rendered. However, his other points were snide and almost sounded like he was trying to find any means to hide his envy and make up lame excuses.
Other than ios, Apple has nothing going on it that couldn't be made available on Android devices.

Sounds 110% wrong to me, as of 1.6 android UI elements scale using density independent pixels (dip or dp) which make elements appear the same size whether on a high density screen or a low density screen.
Take into consideration launchers, put the same launcher on an ldpi device or a hdpi device and independent of screen size each element takes up the same % of real estate on the screen.
Images, depending on the app, don't scale unless they have a repeating pattern and are 9patched, but this isn't a big deal as you get different icon sets built into android and most apps (hdpi high density icons, mdpi medium density icons, etc). Btw nobody can scale an image without distorting it other than svg etc, that's why there's different size icons for different screens.
My last comment is that while UI elements may not have a visible difference, on a higher resolution screen when looking at a TextView or a list view for example, you will still see more list items or more of the text view
Long story short, the author of that article should do research before making such claims. The reason android phones have bigger screens (and lets be honest, there are 3.5in android phones too) is because the manufacturers make them that way and most consumers prefer it that way.
Although I'm not surprised to see an iPhone user make up claims that aren't true and post them on the intetwebz.
And oh yes, android like windows or osx is silly, for iPhones I'm sure its similar, but scaling isn't really an issue for the iPhones as they all come in one size or few sizes.

Apple had a big fat contract from a year+ ago with a hardware manufacturer that they have to fulfill. Which is why they released the 4s with the same screen as the 4. Lame-o. Can't wait to sell my fiance's iphone 4.

Reading the comments is funny than reading the article. You know, I hate the term Isheep, because I just think name calling is just not called for in most situation. People use the device they use because they like them. But when you read a comment that says, you look silly with a 4" phone to your face like it is the 90's, or it is not practical for daily use. The only explanation is because they are sheep. When Apple comes out with their 4" screen they are going to be talking about how great it is, and it will be because they will see how much easier it is to use a 4", 4".3 and 4".5 than they think.
I see just as many people who are likely myself, 6'4" 230 pounds man and women 5'4" less than a buck fifty with 4" phones and they love them. They have no problem carrying them (hell most of the women carry purses with 5 pounds of junk in them) and they use them like they would use any other phone.
Now I a big apply fanboy when it came to my Ipod. I had five or 6 of them over the years and I still use my Ipod touch as a podcasting listening device, even though I could use my phone. But I use my phone a hell of a lot more than my ipod for reading books, simply because with a 4" screen it is almost the size as reading on a paper back. Whenever I try to read something on my Ipod touch I have to put it much closer to my face.

The only truthful thing I find about the comment is the battery life, but you get use to it after using it for awhile and you can get multiple batteries and swap them out whenever you need to, so this is really a non issue for the most part.
I really dont understand why people have to have this Us vs Them mentality in just about everything we as a species do. Sometimes humanity disappoints me.

Having had both the iPhone 4/4S and Galaxy S/S2, I like both the higher resolution of the iPhone 4S and the screen size of the Galaxy S2 (Galaxy S, even). Browsing typical pages, or anything with text really, makes the iPhone screen shine IMO, wheres watching video and typical use is something that I prefer to do on the E4GT.
I would call it a wash, though I picked the Epic Touch for other reasons altogether.
My ideal realistic screen would be a 4.3" 720P... that magically expands to 4.5-5.0" when watching video. Forget pentile display, this is erectile D:

yeah, I was planning on upgrading to the Sprint GNx, but, even though I swore up and down that I wouldn't get locked into a non-nexus device again I'm going to make a liar of myself and get the Galaxy Note if and when that comes to Sprint...The phone is thin, huge resolution, huger screen. I'm tall, have big hands...this phone already gets lost in my pocket to the point where I can't tell if I remembered to put it back in my pocket or not--even with the Sprint hybrid case.
I was considering getting an iPhone 4S too...to switch back and forth. I'm no platform fanboy. I spend equal time between Win7 and OSX (hackintosh) and the occasional Linux...the best tool for the job. But a 3.5" screen, no matter the resolution, just seems unpalatable to me. Sure, the phone feels fantastic in the hand, but--all quibbles about the OS aside--it's just to damn small.

I have average sized hands. The iphone is too small and very awkward in my hand. The screen is too small. I got this Galaxy S2 and put a big Ballstic case on it so it's easier to hold. I dislike when a person lies about my intentions or opinions.
The iphone is a pain the butt to use. One thing open at a time? Pff! That means it takes forever to get something done. I'm limited by my S2 only having 8 browser windows open at a time. Forget 1 thing TOTAL.
Looking for a place to eat? That means the yelp app, google maps, and the navigation app all open at once. Takes longer than a desktop, and yeah, I'm a gaming desktop snob, but I'm very happy to see that finally smart phones are decent. I held out until a month ago to get my first smart phone and yet I work in IT. I explain all that because I cannot imagine owning an iphone. Just so much work to use.
Now to search for a fix for having to reset my browser preference to view 'desktop' sites every time I open it.

We ALL know the real reason....

Help me when my arguments againts the iphone please!

Hey guys.
Strange post perhaps, but Iv always loved my HTC Devices.
So tomorrow my Touch Pro 2 will arrive, when I told my friends this and showed them the pictures. They laughed and said I was just fighting against getting an Iphone.
I believe I have made an informed decision, mostly because I can choose what hardware I want, (in this case a proper keyboard and bigger screen). And also because I can use so many free apps for WM6.1 that the iphone users have to pay for.
So please can you give me some more ammunition so that I can stop losing the arguments about why the iphone fails. Cheers.

You cant really use the bigger screen size argument. Just a beautiful input device and ability to customize it to the hilt.

Well there's always the 1 step behind the times arguement...I mean Iphones aren't as hi-tech as many of HTC's phones...oh...and you can change your batteries or add memory with cards...

You are getting confused with almost any manufacturer apart from HTC.

Iphones can't multitask, not even the new ones.
The screen isn't as "responsive" as the iphone, but you can use a stylus for precision (like making a doodle with the stylus ) and if you live in a cold climate, you can wear gloves and still use your phone. With capacitive screens like the iphone you gave to take your gloves off. Really annoying if you use them.
You don't have to jailbreak it to get many of the things working. And supposedly flash is coming to Windows Mobile first if I remember correctly (by first I mean before the iphone).
You can use it with any network you want (if it's unlocked) and if it's a branded version, you can unlock it without fear of bricking it after an upgrade.
That's just what comes to mind.
Oh, the screen is .1 inches bigger. Not really enough to make an arguement. But it does have more than twice the resolution, which is a goodo point as images can be clearer and reading texts won't tire your eyes as much.

Because I constantly seek validation and enjoy being right? Im not an armchair psychologist.
I can't stand the smugness of the iphone user trying to shove the latest nose flute app in my face, "do you have Excel?" I ask.
"Yes" replies the iphone user as they connect to the apps store and pay £15 for the most essential of software on a business phone.
I think my biggest reason for liking the touch pro 2 is that it just looks stunning with the screen on. Everyone has seen the iphone now, and I like to be different.

Yes, there are just too many iPhones on the street - no "WOW" factor these days. I find the pro2 can turn quite a few heads, especially when I pull out the keyboard and start typing... mind you, someone asked me once where I bought my iPhone with a keyboard!!

The IPhone is too common. It also means you surrender too much rights to Apple. They control what you should use. They ignore you and work at their decided schedule. "Cut and paste" is a new feature -- only idiots will believe that.
"There is no vulnerability." -- between Iphone 3G and 3GS, Apple plugged 48 holes.
The battery overheats fast. The screen wears out fast. The material used to maufacture the IPhone is cheap stuff.
IPhone is totally hopeless without connectivity. At the least, TP2 can still be useful.
The famous Appstore! -- How many apps do you really use? Many of the apps are "fractured" because Apple does not allow the developers to add in some features for fear of opening up their closed ecology.

Agree with above that the App Store is overrated. I have an iPod Touch, and I have about 2 or 3 useful 3rd party apps. Everything else are just time wasters.
I have a couple reasons why I wouldn't buy an fruitphone.
1. Useless homescreen. The lockscreen shows the date/time. Once unlocked, you just have grids of icons. You have counters that show number of new messages, but no previews. Notifications of new messages and appointments really suck.
2. Terrible multi tasking. Let's say I was wasting my time with a game on my fruitphone while listening to music. You can forward or rewind tracks by double pressing the one button to bring up the music controls. But you can't go into the music app to change your music and go back to the game! That's just dumb.
3. Internet browsing. You can't open links in new tabs! No text reflow. That means you have to use landscape mode if you want to zoom in to read the text and you don't want to scroll horizontally. Also, no full screen view in browser. You always have the top/bottom bars.
4. Low resolution display. Text can't easily be read in zoomed out web pages. Photos look terribly pixelated.

Why do you have sheeps as friends...

People have posted some really good points on this thread like TP2 can
- multitask apps
- a monster text machine
- a monster email machine
- a full keyboard
- two mics with noise cancelling abilities
- two speakers for better loudspeaker calls
- better wvga screen (better resolution screen)
- Touch flow 3d is so so smooth(people friendly)
- excellent notifications screen
- better calling options
- better word processor apps like power point, word, excel
- a crap crap crap load of more software for Wndows mobile than iphone will ever have
-the device looks better IMO
But you cant really fault the iphone that much. It is a very pretty with better processor, same ram, bigger onboard harddrive, 3.5mm jack. The OS for both devices are totally different. But in all honesty WM is better than iphone OS BUT Android is better than WM and IS the future of the mobile phone generation....FYI

I agree with the above post. Check out the N900 phone too, its OS is a pseudo linux desktop and its mobile front is very finger friendly looking at youtube.
I am looking at the TP2 myself despite having an iphone. The iphone isn't a very good organizer partly because of its notification/background app. problem, I still haven't got used to the soft keyboard on a 3.5'' device after a year of use - hinders alot of communication and productivity for me personally, the resolution of the screen affects my PDF reading and the lack of bluetooth signalling stops me adding mice/keyboards.
This forum also offers a lot of ROM's too. Although there is a lot to be said for the iphone (its best software comes supplied and the rest can easily be downloaded from the appstore/cydia mostly for free or next to nothing) and no doubt I will have to encounter the same annoyances i had with my touch diamond/kaiser back in Winmo land. I have no doubt for most leisure users who have mastered the soft iphone keyboard that its probably the most fun and beneficial phone for them though.

yes, who could forget about a good ol' fashioned IPhone bashing thread.
you shouldn't let others opinions have an effect on what you want. different strokes for different folks. it's not like either the Tp2 or the IPhone are bad phones.
yes, you can make fun of them for not having the ability to multitask, not being able to sideload applications, interchangeable batteries etc.
just remember it's not wise to throw stones from a glass house.

just ask your friend to change something on your phone, then you do it...tell them to type something, then you type it, ask them what ap they have, then you go get it for free...I do it ALL DAY to my friends that have it, they hate pulling their iphones out now lol. The best is "can you tether? Yeah! For free? AH!!! YOUR PHONE IS CRAP! lol HTC wins. BUT............the iPhone does kill every other device in UI processing, hands down which IMO is a HUGE player in satisfaction. If you can do with 10-30fps UI, HTC with TF3D would be the better choice.

a huge issue for me was free internet tethering. I think with the new 3GS you can do this - but it costs an EXTRA £14.95 per month to O2 for the lowest deal! What a ripoff. That and the pull out keyboard are prob the main things for me.

Desire is miles better!

Seeing an iPhone 4 of a friends the other day next to his 3g was quite funny. The so called amazing resolution screen just looked brighter, more colourful and a tiny bit sharper.
It's funny, before I got my Desire I had an iPhone 3g and I was amazed by it once it got updated to 3.0 firmware. Once jailbroke I could customize the way it looked immensely which is something that a lot of people who use these forums say you can't do. Anyway, my contract was up and being impatient I couldn't hold on for the iPhone 4.0. I'll be honest, I really wanted it but a release date wasn't announced. So I went for the Desire. First thoughts we're, great phone, brilliant screen, very fast, widgets are pretty cool, easy to use, coming from iPhone. Then after a few weeks of enjoying it, the iPhone 4 release date was announced. Then I wanted an iPhone again it looked amazing, all the hype was mental. But I just signed a new contract so there was no way of me getting one. My friend had ordered one and it arrived the other day at work. I didn't get to use it but from what I saw, its not much different visually (display) from the iPhone 3g and its practically the same as the 3g, apart from the cameras,speed,multitasking and obviously a few more things.
So basically what I'm trying to say is. It's no way near as good as the Desire, to use and to look at as far as I'm concerned. Seriously the Desire is a way better phone. The camera doesn't matter its good enough and multitasking on the iPhone is just the worst thing I've ever seen its really poor just the way it actually works. It's terrible.
Not much of a review but just something to stop the arguing and give advice when deciding what phone you want. That's if your choosing out of these two.

Yeah, I heard about that as wyell. its something to do with the metal surrounding on the iPhone is the antenna. Haha. Unfortunately my Desire doesn't have a metal surrounding.

Just been playing with my dads iphone 4 , and laughed at apples version of multitasking!
Played angry birds, then went into calender and back again, to see the game started all again!
So i just had to do it with another game on my phone, to show how proper multi tasking works! Straight back into the game where i left off !

Fanboyism aside, the iPhone 4 does bring some awesome things to the table, like an amazing camera & camcorder and.. well, that's it. Still, it beats any Android smartphone in that department, hands down.

This chap claims not to have noticed the signal drop whilst he is making calls......

a phone primary function is to make calls ... got to hold your iphone4 in the right way so that you can make calls ... now that is another revolution to the mobile industry

Well, actually, for pictures, the Desire's camera is just as good. Yeah Apple wants to make you believe they have something special, but they really don't. It's just a 5 megapixel camera like everyone else uses (except for the 8 megapixel ones in some other Androids).
I've looked at lots and lots of pictures of both phones, including direct comparison shots, and the Desire's camera is actually the exact same (for pictures, not video).
The software handles some things differently, like the sharpening (I recommend everyone to set sharpness to +1 on the Desire), the pictures look a bit less washed but also lack more detail. But those are just small differences caused by different software and the iPhone certainly doesn't do it better (just a bit differently).
What I actually wanted to say, I HATE when Apple gets credit for doing what others have done for years, like 5 megapixel cameras and video calling. And most of the time, they're not even doing it better and often they're doing it worse (like multitasking or that antenna design, which has been invented by HTC and actually works with HTC phones, without dropping calls).

I got my first android phone yesterday, the Desire and damn it's smooth. I always heard that iPhone apparently has the better keyboard, but the Desire blows my iPod touch away.
I love it and have done nothing but geek my phone today, hail HTC!!

Welcome to the world of Android Elf... it's a great place to live

I don't want to be a jerk or attack anyone, but there is some stuff in this thread that I just need to comment on.
I am surrounded by relatively smart people. Many psychologists also. What the original poster is doing is the following: you don't want to feel bad about your purchase (the Desire) so you blindly attack the iPhone 4. I am NOT saying the HTC Desire is bad. But I am pretty sure that what you are doing here is trying to make fun of the iPhone 4 to make yourself feel better about the Desire.
I did this as well. I bought the HTC HD2 just before the Nexus One was announced and I was like: 'aaah... the HD2 is much better. That Android is almost the same as WM. Aaah.. I don't need amoled screens..' etc. All just to hide the fact that I maybe should have waited an bought the Nexus One.
Anyway, what you are saying is not true. The iPhone 4 is pretty good. In fact, if I could trade my HTC Desire for a iPhone 4 I would do it. And I absolutely love the Desire. But I don't fool myself, I know that the iPhone 4 is better. Let me just give you a few examples:
Appstore. Biggest and best on the iPhone. Facebook is the best on the iPhone. Shazam is the best on the iPhone. Every app is usually the best on the iPhone. Developers see the iPhone as their number one, which is very important.
Games. I choose to wright a separate part about this even though it could have fitted with Appstore. You want games on your phone? Then iPhone 4 is without doubt the BEST choice. Highest resolution display + A4 chip (1GHz) + Gyroscope (or whatever that is called. Check out what the Gyroscope does.. its very nice for games). And off course the best titles. The Android Market fails in the games category compared to the Apple Appstore.
Camera. The iPhone 4 has one of the best camera's on any mobile phone. It's only 5 megapixels, but it takes very good pictures. And the HD recording is again, the best out there. At a smooth 30fps with great adios quality its top notch. With iMovie you can even edit all that stuff on your iPhone..
Build quality. Even though I have not held the new iPhone myself, every review goes the same. The build quality is unbelievable. It will make almost any smartphone to date feel cheap. And I can understand that.. it just looks and feels amazing. At 9.3mm thin it's just a very good looking phone.
Facetime. Now I suddenly realised something a few days ago. This may sound dramatic but try to take it seriously. Apple is helping humankind to the next step. Why? Soon many, many people (normal people, kids, grandparents, mothers, everybody) will go from voice calling to video calling. And yes its because of the iPhone 4. They just make it easy to use and it works well. Try to be totally honest with yourself and think about this. It's true. Videocalling may have existed, but it was crap. That's why it never reached the mainstream.
Battery life. The new iPhone should have a very decent battery life. This happens to be one of the areas where the Desire .. sucks.
So.. I know it is hard but try to be honest regarding these things. Yes I have a Desire myself and no I won't be able to buy that new iPhone for at least a year (and by then, the next one should come out). But I am honest regarding those things.
Oh, and the dude trying to attack the iPhone on the 'bad multitasking'. Angry birds (one of my favorite games ever! ) has probably not been updated to multitasking yet. Remember, the developers must update their apps to work. So again, its a bad argument against the iPhone. Though I won't disagree with the fact that if you want the ultimate multitasking, you are better off with the Desire.
Conclusion: Enjoy your Desire without attacking other phones please. Be a grown up.

Now I have not posted in this thread, but really.. Come on...
Why do you think that the people you surround yourself with, describes or adds something to you or your arguments? In this case, I could claim that you could be inside a mental asylum (for being surrounded with psychologists) .
But seriously, "blindly attack"? Where have you been? Its been proved on many iPhones that you can't even hold the iPhone 4 properly without losing your network-connection. The multi-tasking is horrible according to reviewers and other people that tested it. And Steve Jobs email is frakking horrific, but not unexpected.
Since when is this blind attacks? Sure the phone-build, camera, and some software is great, but still no other device would be spared ridicule if the errors is as great as the iPhone 4's. It will be scrutinized and by all means, it deserves the ridicule it to this point have (not)received, lol.

Yes Apple have more apps then Android, that dont mean they all better.
Games are the ONLY advantage apple has.
The build quality may also be good BUT whats the point when the main function of a MOBILE PHONE which is to make phone calls goes away when you hold your phone a certain way.
I mean come on, your paying £500 for your IPhone 4, you should not be TOLD how to hold it in order to make phone calls. You should be able to hold it how u like and still not loose signal like all other phones out there.

Games. Correct games are better on iphone 4 but a couple hours of gaming and bye bye battery. That's why they made the ps3. And there isn't a noticeable difference in display quality against the Desire I've looked at both together and there equally as good, what ever it says on paper.
Camera. The iPhone 4 has one of the best camera's on any mobile phone. It seriously isn't one of the best. Picture quality is same as Desire if not a tiny bit better. You win on video recording but I think in future the Desire will perform the same after an update. I'm sure with the hardware its got it can eventually record at 720p 30fps. You'll see.
Build quality. I agree apple always have an excellent build quality and that's where you're wallet gets emptied.
Facetime. Trust me your not gonna use this. U might at first but eventually you wont. I mean come on how gay is video calling. Hearing a voice is suffice.
Battery life. The new iPhone should have a very decent battery life. This happens to be one of the areas where the Desire .. sucks. Wrong my friend's last about the same as desire according to him. He has both phones.
So.. I know it is hard but try to be honest regarding these things. Yes I have a Desire myself and no I won't be able to buy that new iPhone for at least a year (and by then, the next one should come out). But I am honest regarding those things.

I wont quote you one the beginning, I would only say that is not true (that we say Desire is better because we bought it).
I didn't get Desire on contract, I paid it in cash. That means I had the money to buy any phone I like (overall anyone, when we take the fact that I paid for the Desire 500 euro). I knew exactly why I want the Desire. I knew it's features, it's positive and negative sides. I liked the look of Sense (instead of jailbreaking my phone just so I can change my wallpaper, this happen in previous models of iPhone), I liked the OS and it's openness, and I liked it's look. In fact, I liked everything about Desire, and I think that this will be the phone I will have for longest (in case it doesn't break). I know this because with my previous phones, I lost the will to play with them after 3-4 days after purchase. With the Desire is completely different: my work is suffering because I keep doing something on it all the time, and I have it for 3 weeks
I mean, there are so many thing to do with it, sky is the limit (and the knowledge of members here, which I believe is wide and big as the sky).
Anyway, lets go back to some points you made with which I completely disagree (okay, my whole post is disagreement with yours, but still )

That CAN (and will, I guess) change. On the Google IO, google announced 50.000 apps on the market. When was that, a month ago? Today there are over 65.000. That is 15.000 apps in a month. At this rate, there will be 150.000 more apps in the Market in the next 10 months.
But, I hope and expect this rate to change when I'll take in mind how fast people (developers) are turning toward Android.
Don't make me start at the attitude of Apple toward developers.
By the way, developers develop for public. If there are users of Android more then of iOS, they will start developing for Android. Sc**w that fine program if nobody uses it. So their primary motive to do something is "how many people will use their app?".
Apple has more apps, but I bet that will change. In 2 years, there were 50.000 apps in the market. BUT, in just 1 month, there were 15.000 more. Just one month, read that carefully. That shows to me that something is drastically changing.

My same reply from above goes to the games. I will only add something here: At CPU side they may be the same (although there are comments that apple have underclocked the iPhone CPU at something like 700MHz... and we have OVERclocked ours at 1.2GHz ).
Concerning the resolution... it's not that of a big deal. The screen is smaller then of Desire, so that makes the resolution lose. Unless you watch your iPhone 4 display with microscope, then you would notice the more pixels on the iPhone. Otherwise, the naked eye doesn't need more pixels on such small space.

I have never (ever, trust me) chosen a phone because of it's camera, so I am lost here. I don't know who takes better pictures or videos.

Probably, I can only guess. But what about that same build breaking easy and that same build causing such a big issue with network connectivity?
It's not just build something. Are you aware that in order for you to have decent connectivity, you will have to cover your nice looking iPhone? What's the point?
When we talk abous build quality, we have to take the strength (which sucks, on the second drop the screen dies, on the forth drop the glass is broken) and the looks (which again sucks, because the network sucks if you don't cover it with rubber, and if you do that, it's not good looking anymore).

I don't even want to start about this. I will only say: if those grandparents, parents, children... wanted to see eachother, why didn't they use video calls over 3G? That technology exists for over 5 years, and I have never used it (except for one time, to test with a friend what does it do in fact). Or Fring? Or whatever other app that exists there for video calls?

If you look at both phones specs (I have), you will notice that on paper they have VERY similar battery specs. And still, your opinion about the Desire battery life comes from experience, but for the iPhone comes from reading? That is rather unfair :/
Just lets wait and see how iPhone will do in real life situations. My wife charge her iPhone 3GS twice in a day. She has to, her battery goes flat at noon. My battery lasts 2 days, with very big usage (I said above, I can't put my Desire of my hands). iWin

Surely face time isn't a winner with it only being on wifi I've had nokia n97 and samsung Omnia both had forward facing cameras i used then both zero times, ok grannies wanting to see grandchilden i get that but i sure as hell don't want to see your ugly mug or the wifes... or my mates.. ok if your away for a while it would be nice to see the face of a family but iphone4 only? and wifi only?...
More megapixels don't make a nice photo, the lense and sensor are probably more important, i would find it hard to believe that the iphone4 isn't better in this catagory, low light shots with the desire are super grainy and striped = bad sensor.
Iphone4 looks very nice right up until you touch it then it's lovely lux black look is greasy finger tastic!
edit: so you have to hold it around the edge... oh wait!

Appstore: Really??? Have you taken a look at the quality of apps in there? 80% are duplicates of other apps, 10% are original in their design and 10% are games. Coming from an iPod Touch 2g, I have to say i found all the apps that I need to be productive on a phone in 1% of the time it took me to find them on the ipod just because i didn't have to sift through 1 gazillion useless knock-offs. And then i found some more!
Whoever said MORE apps means BETTER apps??? Yes, there are lots of awesome apps in Appstore but i have not found anything that apps in Android Market can't do and can't do better! And widgets - oh, "non-denominational super-being", I love widgets.
Build quality: Sorry, but after a certain point this is subjective! And you haven't even held it yourself! I find my Desire to have a superb build quality - try to disprove that.
Games: What are we - 12? Do we need silly little 3D games on a 3.4inch screen. That's just laughable. Whoever thought gaming without physical buttons is kewl?! With the current state of haptic feedback this is the most inorganic and crappy method of control. My thumbs take about 35% of the screen of a 3.4inch ipod touch - good luck trying to play like that. My point is - games matter for iPad/tablets. For a phone - i am content with tower defense and sudoku! For Mass Effect 2 I have my HD 5870 and an overclocked i7-920 at home thank you very much.

It's fate. I'm pumped. You're pumped. We're all pumped for Ice Cream.
But that's not my point...
I don't know about the majority of you guys, but I'm coming from a long period of mobile confusion. As you can see in my signature here, I started smartphones with the iPhone 2G and stuck to it out of a bit of "distortion field" or "fanboyism" for quite some time.
This past couple of years though, either the field has weakened, or I've built up a tolerance for it. I switched from iOS to Android and back again over and over in an attempt to ground myself somewhere, but in the end I always found myself back to old reliable, iOS.
The reason it was old reliable for me was the WYSIWYG-ness of it. Not much fluff; The "it just works" crap in action. I'd use Android and just fall in love with it all over again, but before I knew it I was frustrated with Force Closings and skins like Sense and MotoBlur. It would drive me away as quickly as it drew me in. Change is change.
Now though, we have a beautiful light at the end of a very obnoxious tunnel for me. I'm absolutely thrilled, but... as they say on the Jersey Shore... lesbihonest.
I feel like I'll go back to iOS. Not at least for a year or so, and not out of Android being sub-par! Don't get me wrong. I just think of it this way. If you invest in both ecosystems the way I have, you can jump back and forth very easily.
The way the iPhones work has seemingly been set in stone: One generational upgrade every 2 years with a minor speed-bump in between.
Android also has a clear manner of evolution: All participating manufacturers put out a new device every time the technology takes a step. It's like a never-ending series of -like speed-bumps when compared to iPhone, except we get the benefit of different and ever-evolving chasis.
If we look at Nexus devices only, which I feel are made to lead the charge and tell the other manufacturers, "Here, this is your new bar. Meet it!" then I like to think of Nexus devices as such. They're the bar that gets set every once in a while to keep everyone on track and keep everyone innovating.
One could conclude, given the way of things, that if you are like me and go through phases of needing stability and stability, no muss or fuss and phases of needing to tinker and customize, great fun mussing and fussing; I think this is perfect.
Apple releases their numerical release, new generation phone and it's the next big thing. Then it gets long in the tooth and they release a speedbump. Not good enough for bleeding edge though, so what's the hotness on Android. And so on.
Anyone think this might be their way of dealing with but-I-need-new-hotness syndrome?

Galaxy Nexus is the 1337

The iPhone has seen success from day one and has continued success through all of it's phone and OS updates. It's been chugging along since 2007, like you said, with regular hardware and software update intervals. The style of the phone and the OS are more or less the same since day one. 3.5 inch screen, round home button with a square icon, silver edges, buttons, speakers and plugs in the same place. The OS is a app tray with the OSx style dock.
New features are added and the user interface is streamlined. People know what to expect, and this is what keeps most of them coming back. They don't have to learn something new every year.
Android started on the opposite end of the spectrum. While the Android OS is relatively uniform, hardware and custom overlays/roms have created a hodgepodge of a product that has always been behind iOS in terms of usability and uniformity and always behind in terms of hardware and apps.
But there are a couple things that people tend to overlook when they compare the two OS. One is that iOS had a good headstart on Android. The first Android device was released over a year after the iPhone, and while the HTC Dream sold semi-well at the start, Android lagged far behind iOS, and even Windows Mobile. Despite a rocky start, Android converged with iOS and Blackberry sometime at the end of 2010. During 2011, we've seen soaring growth, to where there's something like 500k+ 'activations' daily. The news reports are saying that Google is getting ready to announce 1 million daily in the next few months.
In November, Android is going to hit an apex, a point where it really begins to shine. And where I believe it will begin to outpace iOS at an alarming rate. We'll see a few things happen next month that will change Androids standing, at least in my mind, in the smartphone world.
1. Android will finally catch up to the iPhone hardware.
The iPhone has always been a step ahead, which is something that I don't understand. An example: iPhone 4 was released in June of 2010 with a 'Retina' display. 326 ppi. Android still has never had a phone over 220 or so ppi. The Galaxy S2 was really the first phone to outpace the iPhone 4, a year and a half later, and it still doesn't have a high ppi/resolution screen. The screen is a full inch larger, which is very nice, but Apple still holds the title as the highest clarity screen. And the A4 processor has given most of the Android phones a run for their money. Again, the Galaxy S2 easily outpaced it with the dual-core cpu, but a month later, the iPhone 4S was released with the A5 with the killer PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU. It pretty much smokes the Galaxy S2 in terms of video processing power.
Next month will be the first time Android has a screen that compares, surpasses even, the iPhone. Galaxy Nexus will have the same ppi as the iPhone, and it will be a full inch larger. The SuperAmoled also smashes the iPhone contrast by a factor of over 100 to 1 (100,000:1 vs 800:1). The RAZR will be quick to follow with the same 720p display. We all are a little disappointed that the Galaxy Nexus will still lag behind the iPhone 4S in terms of GPU, but the PowerVR SGX540 is nothing to scoff at, especially at the 300mhz clock speed.
The point is: Android will dominate the the hardware side of things from here on out. I don't see Apple changing their form factor by much. They may increase screen size to around 4", but Android will retain the largest screen. And Apple has nowhere to go in terms of ppi/resolution. They've already claimed to have hit the limits of the human eye. And they'll need to play cath-up in terms of contrast. The iPhone 5 and it's quad core A5 may take the title CPU for a few months next summer, but Android will quickly regain the lead. The quad core Tergra 'Kal El' will be out relatively soon, and we'll always see Android phones with CPU/GPU from the different companies, which gives it a good advantage.
2. Android 4.0 is huge.
Last tuesday, I was talking to my friend (an Apple enthusiast) about Ice Cream Sandwich. I knew about the new App switcher, and as a prior WebOS owner, it's something that I've really, really missed in Android, and iOS. I didn't count on it having the 'flick-to-close' app and notification features, though. I didn't really expect to see much change at all to the rest of the OS. As it turns out, I was very wrong. I'm waaaaay more excited for Android 4.0 now after watching the live stream on Wednesday. Google really exceeded my expectations.
Adapt, Adopt and Improve. Google has been doing this from the start, and they've done it in 4.0 in a huge way. They've listened to what people say about their product and have really done something about it. Ease of use is not something that Android has been known for, but they specifically addressed that in their presentation. This stigma is something that will be difficult to change for Android, but they have taken a huge step in the right direction. People will notice and will appreciate these changes. Segmentation has always been a big problem as well, but it looks like Google is taking efforts to quell that problem as well. I hope they can, but it really depends on the network providers. And it won't effect me, because I'll root and update to the latest build anyway.
On the other spectrum, iOS has kept steady. It's been user friendly, it's been stable, and it's been the same. iPhone owners enjoy and expect it. But it's starting to become a problem. Example: it took 2 years for Apple to adapt the notifications tray. Example 2: without rooting your phone, you are locked into using the default keypad (and a lot of other default options) that is just terrible, compared to some of the text prediction keypads out there. This isn't a big problem for people that jailbreak, but there are millions of iPhone users out there that don't want to 'void their warranty'. I don't want to dog on iOS too much, as I'm pretty biased against it, but iOS 6 is going to need some pretty big improvements to match Ice Cream Sandwich. iOS isn't the tog dog anymore. The playing field has been leveled. This is a good thing because I still feel that the mobile OS platform has a lot of growing to do, especially when it comes to the tablet form factor. Desktop OS's have really been stagnant for a while now, and it's really refreshing to see the mobile OS's advance so rapidly.
Anyway, this is getting a bit long, so I should wrap it up.
Android is growing in a major way. If you look at graphs of current mobile data usage, you'll see that Android is sky rocketing there, just like their market share. iOS is starting to loose it's advantage there as well. The Android App pool is swelling up just a fast. We'll see Android pass Apple up in every category in 2012, or at least match it. The only title Apple will hang onto is the iPad and the tablet market, but there is a lot of room in that market and it's growing rapidly. So are Android tablets.
I'll probably get an iPhone 5, and I don't doubt that it will be a great phone, but I've got at least 6 months to get to enjoy my Ice Cream Sandwich The Android experience maybe a little different for me than most, because I plan on staying on top of the latest hardware and software, trading up when a good replacement comes along, but I think that others will find ICS just as pleasing, even if they stick to the same phone for a year or so.

I agree about the strides Google is making to change the minds of Android users who have been burned by odd experiences in the past. They definitely are making a great effort with ICS.
In the end, as I said, I think there may be others like us who have fallen into this pattern now. We stay on top of what's great and know how to live within either ecosystem. We prefer one or the other, but have the need for greatness and will go after it every 6 months.

It works perfect till now.

I unlocked the bootloader. Didn't even bother to root it.
Stock is already good enough for me.

I started my smartphone journey with winmo back in the 5.0 days, talk about customizing to make it work. Random app stores everywhere. Just about the only thing that was great from stock was the T-9 dialer. It was so easy and quick. Stupid stylus always getting lost. Steve had that right.
Next for me was a 3g iPhone. Unboxed and, to coin a phrase "it just worked ". But that was it. An app tray. After being used to unlocking the phone and seeing the weather, texts, events, everything, just at a glance, it was a huge adjustment. And a shock. No t9 dialer? No copy paste? I used it for about 3 months, then finally got frustrated with typing something, receiving a call, and all I had done was completely gone. I just about threw the phone away.
Switched back to winmo, then apple released a fix for the copy paste, and lost data. Switched back.
Still being mostly unhappy with the user experience, my friends talked me into the n1. Didn't take long for me to fall into a state of realization that this was the perfect mix of the frustration of winmo configuration
And the blandness of apple. And all without root!
So yeah, I've been running around with a n1 for damn near 2 years, unrooted, and. Damn proud of it.
Both ios and Android have their place, but I think Android is more appealing, and so do about 50% plus of smartphone users.
Enjoy your experience, whichever it is, but don't expect me to change my mind any time soon, I won't expect you to change yours

This is, I think, the best part about owning and using an Android powered device. It's exciting, you learn, you become a part of a community and you seek out those people when you mess up (which everyone inevitably does). I can almost guarantee that my Nexus S is different than yours in some way, shape or form. That's whats great about Android, I make the phone conform to me, not the other way around.
Having said that, I get the mass appeal of iOS and I feel with the overhaul of notifications it is finally to a position that I am able to adopt. Additionally, I think iPhones are the best feeling devices (hardware wise) and I was ready to vote with my wallet had the iPhone 5 been announced with what I feel are must have specs (NFC, 4G, legitimate screen size, etc).
Nexus Prime (way better sounding than Galaxy Nexus) will do for now until I get a look at the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 next year

Anyone ever work for Boeing? After seeing the stuff that goes in and out of there anything seems possible. Whether or not it would make it to a commercial market is another story. But there are things being built that I only thought existed in movies lol

Boeing is great and all but the real magic is at Skunk Works. Anything is basically possible. Electronics are advancing so fast these days it won't be long before we are wowed with another break through phone tech.

While the commercial seems to be an exaggeration it will most definitely be commercial produced within the next 5-10 years.
Invisible internals? While I'm sure they can minimize the visibility of such things what I think most likely to happen is there will be a 'hand grip' or such where all of the unhideables will be hidden...mostly the battery. The motherboards for these devices is already insanely tiny and only 1 or 2 more process shrinks and super-integration of all of the disparate circuits could reduce the entire motherboard to a chip the size of an SD card.
The flexible invisible screen already exists...and it's AMOLED.
The battery is going to be the hard part...though perhaps we're not thinking 'out of the box' enough IRT batteries. I know there is lots of work going on in the polymer-battery area...flexible, semi-flexible or formless liquid batteries? Who knows....but...we will see it.
This is no flying car...these are consumer electronics. These megalith companies have a vested interest in making the stuff they just sold you yesterday completely obsolete by today to take more of your money tomorrow. That's their incentive. That's why Apple will sit on a phone for a year...they also make money on the back-end in the app store. Samsung makes money on the hardware, that's why there's so much of it.
I see nothing compelling of current gen, next gen or even rumored next-next gen Androids/smart phones. My phone is pretty damn fast and thin and has a huge screen...aside from radio upgrades, storage upgrades and processor upgrades...which we really don't need yet, we are way ahead in that department....I want something as amazing as a flexible see through phone. Going from a Lotus to a Moment was amazing, going from the Hero to the Evo4G was amazing....Going from the Evo to Evo3D was, umm, incremental? Slightly? Evo3g-NS4G to ET4g? It was cool, it is the superior phone for certain, but...amazing? Not anymore.
Bring on the transparent holographic liquid-polymer see-through battery invisible electronic 4D 5G LTE-A² ultra-phones. I'm getting bored, lol.

I saw a preview some where online that a japaneese company has a thin plastic film stuff that did just what this describes in this video. I totally beleive it. Ovbiously the internals arnt see through but the diaplay could be. It was shocking when i saw the preview demo a year or so ago

Honestly, some people here have no imagination. The internals, for example, don't need to be see through, they just have to be smaller and clustered to a certain edge of the device and be covered by something black so it looks like a design. The rest can be clear. Done!
You guys need to balance out some logic with imagination, you will then see how close these things are to actually being in production.

Long time iOS User Switch Experience

Coming from a iPhone 4S, Android will definitely take some time getting used. I come from highly technical background so the adjustment will come pretty easy.
First impression. I love it. Love the screen real estate, love the customization options. I used to be a big iPhone/iOS advocate, and I still believe it's a great platform (but must be jailbroken). But I couldn't stand all the patent trolling and anti-competitive nature of Apple any more so I jumped ship. So all my friends around me make fun of me for defecting. The first day I had my GN2, I had an iPhone5 owner come up to me and say "Can your phone do this." And each time he asked me, mine did it a little better than his. For instance, we compared video quality. Retina is nice and all, but watching the same Youtube clip I noticed the colors were definitely more vivid on the GN2 compared to his 5. Secondly, he was like "Well I have Siri." And I told him I had S-Voice. I showed him how S-voice allows for hotword detection so I do not have to press another button ask S-voice another question. Whereas Siri, you need to press the mic button again to ask it question. Lastly, he asked "do you have an app like find my iPhone". I showed him what AndroidLost could do. I've known people to lose their iphones and find my iphone does very little to help recover the phone. All my friend could do is see that the person was in some apartment building. What good is that? Now with androidlost I could take a pictures of the thief, record sounds, do so much more. Basically each time he came over to my office and asked me, can your phone do this, I always one uped him and he walked back to his desk disappointed. Felt great. I felt justified. lol.
And lastly, one of the biggest knocks on the GN2 is it's size and how one handed operation is difficult to impossible. But after owning the GN2 for the past couple days I realized, that I don't one hand operate my mobile devices that often. The only time I noticed the enormity of the phone was while driving. I mean if I had been one hand operating my iPhone all these years, I should notice it more often on the GN2. But it turns out the only time I noticed was while driving. To me that only tells me I two hand operated my iPhone the majority of the time except for while driving. And technically we shouldn't really be operating our mobile devices while driving anways. So I just don't bother to operate my phone while driving. Unless it's to answer a call or hang up. So the size of this phone is saving lives . One of my friends said, well one handed operations is crucial to him so that's why I went with the iPhone5. But I question how crucial it really is. I bet if he picked up a GN2, he wouldn't notice much of a difference as one handed operation rarely occurs (just my opinion).

Welcome to the family. For one-handed operation try using a FlyGrip with your new toy. That Makes it so much easier.

I am in the same position you are in. Switched from iPhone 5 to GN2, because that phone surely grabbed my attention. Right off the bat it was very confusing indeed, being new to the android platform.
Losing facetime and iMessage really did bother me, since it made it way easy for me to communicate with friends and family or video or text when I have no cellular signal. Skype is a great replacement, but many of my friends and family members don't have it unless I specifically tell them to do so. I really hope they bring
I love the huge screen of GN2 and I really think that's the reason I like it better than my iPhone 5, but as far as image quality and color accuracy. I'm 100% sure image details are sharper on the iPhone 5 as well as colors are more accurate. The GN2 screen is a bit saturate, which would make it more vivid I guess.
As far as integration and ecosystem, the iPhone 5 fit really well with my Macbook Air I own and the flow of information from one to the other is promoted and seamless. The GN2 connects to my PC desktop and macbook air basically the same way... through google and that's fine too.
GN2 gives me a lot more information at a glance with widgets, which I definitely love more than iOS. Even if you jailbreak iOS you can't really get the same homescreen layouts you could have with the GN2.
As far as apps go, I noticed immediately that the iPhone apps are more polished and smoother than on the android fence. I noticed scroll lagging and game lags on android apps that the same apps on iOS doesn't show. It's probably because developers didn't make the ports to well.
I still don't know the limits to what the GN2 phone can do. Rooting will definitely open a whole new door that as of right now, I'm too afraid to open.
One thing is for sure, I can't tell you which phone is better than the other. As for now, I will continue to use the GN2, because its the "new" thing and new things excite me.

Losing facetime didn't bother me at all as I never used it. Also I do have an iPad so I am not completely off the Apple ecosystem. Losing iMessage did bother me a little bit. It would be nice to have delivery and read receipts. Besides that I am on an unlimited text plan, so really iMessage really was no benefit to me. Most of my friends are all about privacy and only a handful enabled read receipts, which is actually far more useful than delivery receipts anyway. So I am not really missing much.
Color accuracy. I have many friends that are in the Graphic Design field and have stressed the importance of color reproduction. So much so that a friend got me convinced that I absolutely must get an IPS or PVA panel for my computer instead of a TN. And I listened to him. I'm glad I did, but only because I like the view angles of IPS over TN. The color reproduction I really didn't care about as much. At first I didn't even know what he meant by it, but the way a friend described it was, does the color on the screen match what you see in real life. I guess that's important to people in that field, but to me a slight deviation doesn't matter to me. Just like the CNET article that Jrockttu referenced. Some may prefer the over-saturation of the standard mode and others may will like the more accurate colors of movie mode. But at least with Sammy, you have the choice.
The apple ecosystem was definitely nice. Airplay was nice. However I won't miss itunes one bit.
Apps. I had all these wonderful apps downloaded to iphone and ipads. All great. But I realized about 99% of the time I used my iPhone for a select number of functions. And almost all of it, android had as well. And did it as well as iOS and if not better than iOS. There are only 2 things so far that I miss from the Apple App store. One of them being Logmein. I actually bought Ignition when it was on sale for the iPhone. They now have a free version, which Android lacks. And I don't want to spend 29.99 for another copy of Logmein ignition on Android. I know android advocates will say Logmein is stupid, just use something else like VNC. But I absolute must have Logmein. It's convenient and I have many computers setup on it. Especially friends and family that require tech support from me from time to time. The other thing I miss is a good Streamtome or AirVideo replacement. Emit just doesn't cut it. I have yet to fool around with Plex, but I guess that may be a good alternative. But I liked the simplicity of Streamtome and all the features.
With all that said. I have no regrets making the switch and couldn't be happier. Infinitely expandable memory via microsd card support, the ability to carry multiple batteries if need be, screen size, no longer tied to itunes, no more need for converting videos, greater customization, no proprietary overprice lightning connector, and a bunch of other stuff I can't think of right now, definitely outweighs what I loss from iOS. And I do have my ipad if I really need it. But I don't see myself going back to iOS any time soon.

Glad to see you make the transition. I've converted a few iPhone users myself and once they got used to Android, they love it and thank me all the time for getting them off of the Apple bandwagon.

Also, I absolutely despise S-Voice. It is slow, clunky, and the voice sounds like Siri with a cold. But that's OK since we have Google Now! I downloaded an app called Home2 Shortcut, and now when I double tap the home button it launches Google Now's voice search.

Long press menu for Google Now, or there is a button in the task switcher with long press home. I disabled the double tap home within S Voice. Probably the first and last time I will open S Voice, but now the home button doesn't delay as it waits to see if you are going to double press.

Its not even really fair to compare them to a non-jailbroken iPhone. You can do so much on android without rooting etc compared to what you can do to an iPhone stock. The Note 2 is an easy winner everywhere. Battery life kills any iphone I used....just got 2 days on a single charge with 3.5 hours on screen time.
The big thing missed from iPhone days is Lockinfo. Yes there are sort of comparable things as far as getting the data I liked on the lockscreen in android but I loved the simplicity and layout of Lockinfo. Android smokes iPhone though on the lockscreen notification area. With Elixir 2 I can get all kinds of stuff on there....without root, custom rom jailbreaking etc.
One small thing is also location spoofer so I can trick the NBA package that I am in London so I can watch/torture myself watching Golden State Warrior games due to local blackout rules. It would be great to watch the games on my larger screen Note 2 but oh well I can deal.
BiteSMS was also solid...but they make chomp for android which is close but to me not as smooth on the lockscreen side. Most of the times it pops up but sometimes it doesnt.
Group messaging is good on iPhone but its not something that happens to me more than twice a month so pfffft.

Yes I know these shortcuts however those require an additional step to make the app listen to your command. With my setup I double tap the home button and Google search is listening immediately.

In short, our Note 2 can do anything and everything iCraps can, but only better, more of it, and at a fraction of the price with ten times the support community. Crapple is coasting, Samsung innovates.

I'm in the same position. My first smart phone was the 3g then moved to the 4. It was awesome but it was all I knew. With every new update I was chasing jailbreaks and it was fun. But just like what was stated I got sick of the bs lawsuits and being locked down and that giant pos itunes wanting to constantly wipe all my data. I finally made the jump and wonder what the hell took me so long. I'm so used to having to chase the jailbreak my first instinct with this was to root. So after 2 days, a ton of reading, and scared I was going to brick my new baby I did it and I will never look back. Never liked crapple but the hw was good and I was comfortable with the whole jailbreak process but am extremely happy I took the dive and glad to be here.

One thing I miss from iphone is the spell checker and underlining of misspelled words with predictions in no matter what you were in. Not a fan of the predictions over the keyboard.

I'm still learning this phone...and I had been using a 4s for a few months...and can honestly say this phone blows it and the I phone 5 out of the water. I have several friends and co-workers that have the 5 and have used them a-lot There really is no comparison for any of them.Sure some apps are more polished...they have to be..but...I have found most of my replacement apps to be fully functional..Everything on this phone works perfectly...and with Google Now...well...that just is another nail in the coffin for IOS if they don't do an about face and start really changing it for the better...funny thing...many apple fans don't want to...
I really get a kick out of watching peoples face when they see what this phone can do...If your really want to impress someone..down load a full 1080P movie to it and play it back for them...I-phone fanatics will do 1 of 3 things...get PO'd...either ***** or complain it's too big...or show their impressed by their jaws dropping and then say nothing or very little...Those that are dissatisfied will ask a ton of questions and want to see more...
I got to say this phone amazes me every time I open it up to use it...and that is something no Apple phone could ever do..There is no WoW factor...and the egg heads at Cupertino don't get it...Sure...the I phones can do a lot...they are safe and secure...and they generally work as promised...but Android just snuck up on them and bit them in the buttocks real hard and passed them by...

I have one question too. I'm stuck with my iPhone 4S for now but I'm desperately trying to switch to the Note II. My biggest (and perhaps even only) concern is the camera quality. Judging from this thread it seems that the camera (at least using stock conditions) is inferior to the 4S's. However, without a direct comparison it's hard to tell. Does anyone here have any direct comparison between the two cameras?

There isn't that much of a differene between them to worry over. Both do a good job and if you need more get a real dslr for serious picture taking.
