Use a non-AT&T SIM card without an unlock code - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

I just activated a non AT&T SIM card on my Xperia Ion without using an sim unlock code. just entered all the information for the new Network, rebooted my phone and then selected that network, and there it was, phone service, unlimited data, everything.

Was it net10? Straight talk? Red pocket? Jolt? Or.h20 wireless?

I heard they made 1 and only one magically unlocked Ion. He must've gotten it! Check the box for the golden ticket charlie!

Wish I had the golden ticket. Never heard of it before.

How long have you had your phone? I just got mine 3 days ago and a quick read through the manual said Verizon will unlock the SIM after 60 days of use. They at least want something out of having a customer purchase a world phone from them.

Imei tracking

My question is simply, can att track my phones Imei even if I don't give it to them? Like, say I put a different SIM card in my phone. Would att know it was my phone being used with that SIM?

I am pretty sure the imei is the phone i.d. of itself, and putting a sim card into it....ATT will still be able to track. What are you trying to do?

Then why do they always ask for the Imei of the phone when you set it up? I'm just curious as to if they can look up a phones imei just by it being on the network.. because I had a blackberry and then an inspire and when I put my SIM into the inspire, I realised I had no data. I called att and the lady told me it was because they used different data plans and then promptly asked for my imei. A few minutes later I had data on my inspire but I slapped the same SIM into another phone and the data worked just fine without att needing the phones imei.. curious.

There are different data plans for different types of smartphones. When I worked in phones iphone data, blackberry data, and Android data were all different, but iPhone data would work with other iphones and so forth.
They can track it on their network and block it. Just happened to a guy who bought one from CList and got hosed.
Yes, they can track the IMEI just by putting your sim card in and connecting to the network.

But I placed the SIM from the inspire into an iPhone 3g I was working on and it was pulling data?

It isn't supposed to, maybe it has changed. It has been a little over a year since I worked with them. Either way, they can track their phones imeis.
Alright, well thank you to all who answered. I appreciate yalls help.

BlackBerry phones use a data plan called BIS. Which is needed for them to use cell data.
Androids and iPhones use regular data. You can switch sims between them if they're the same sims.
Now, withe different phones running on different networks, I believe you have to switch sims. Like if you have an LTE phone you can't use it on a UMTS phone.
And yes, your IMEI gets tracked whenever you use data.

IMEI gets tracked even when your phone connects to network, not just when you make calls or use data... its like a unique identifier of your phone over the network.

How to tell if handset is sim free or not?

Hi
Just bought a Note II, I was told it was a sim free model, and whilst its accepted my tesco sim card without issue when I log into google play on my pc its brought it up as an O2 Samsung GT-N7100 so the question is have I been sold a O2 handset thats been unlocked? I know it doesnt really matter that much but curious more than anything
Or is it possible tgey have flashed it with a o2 firmware my mistake?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
You could try. Borrowing a friends sim and see if you can send a message. If yes, the you are likely sim unlocked.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
The N7100 is the international version so it should be sim free.
To test your if your phone is unlocked, insert another sim card other than your "tesco". And if it shows enter sim unlock code, it is locked, otherwise it is unlocked.

Tesco runs on the O2 network. That is why, sometimes Tesco handsets will work with O2 Sim Cards only etc...
Yeah I know, hence why im looking to change o2 data coverage is shocking and I cant use sky go or tvcatchup using 3g as it comes up with some rubbish about saying im abroad...

Pre-paid SIM Worked Without Unlock Code?

I got an unlock code from AT&T, but I was never prompted to enter it after putting an H2O Wireless SIM card in my GS3. I'm able to place/receive calls and get data after entering APN settings.
My phone is rooted, but I didn't think it was already unlocked. Maybe I missed something. Any ideas? Thanks..

Did you buy the phone from someone else or an official retailer brand new in the box? If the former, someone may have already unlocked it. Otherwise did you perform the JB unlock method via the services menu?

I purchased the phone new from AT&T and rooted it a few days later. I never did the JB unlock.

Prepaid or postpaid... They all work as long as they are same phone service provider. Try a different network n see if that works.
Its a network lock, not a service/plan lock.

I guess that explains it, since H2O uses AT&T's network.

[Q] Issues SIM Unlocking Metro PCS GS3 T999N

I have bought a service to get an Unlock Code for my Samsung Galaxy S3 T999N which is SIM Locked by Metro PCS. They provided me with some 4 codes: NETWORK, PROVIDER, SUBPROVIDER, DEFREEZE.
When I turn on my phone with a non-metropcs sim, the phone prompts: "PIN to unlock SIM service provider" so I put the PROVIDER code that I got from FATSGSM after hitting "Unlock" I get the following message: "unable to unlock sim service provider"
What is wrong? Could the PIN provided by this service be wrong?
Just an FYI, I am outside the US right now.
Have you tried using the metro sim?

I don't have the metro sim.
Ok. Im not certain about it, but it might be required for the initial unlock. Hopefully someone else can say for sure.

Thanks for reply to my post.
This might not be true because if you have the Metro PCS sim card inside, you will not get the unlock box. You only get the box to put the unlock code in when you put a non-MetroPCS sim card.
Can anyone corroborate this information?

He means it may need to be activated with the carrier first in order to be unlocked.. Some phones do require this.. You can try the region unlock app but I'm not sure if it works with s3
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
I used it when I got my replacement S3 a while back and it said the unlock was successful. I have no way to test if it really was or if it also SIM unlocked though. I wouldnt expect it to do so, but in my experience, it is safe to try.
