Is enabling "Android debugging" in dev settings important? - HTC One X

Is there security risk involved?
thanks!

Sure there are. Programs can send commands to your phone. If you don't know what the program does, it could be doing something nasty.
BUT it's necessary to turn on if you want apps to be able to do stuff to your phone. Like the flashing apps, running scripts etc. Turn it on when you need it, turn it off when you don't if you're worried.

Few items

I have left some items with their default settings, and want to know if changing them will screw up the nightlies (when they resume)
Does USB debugging, debugging notify and allow mock locations have to be on?
Can the device hostname be changed to be more name friendly on my router?
Under privacy, can I deselect backup my data? I don't want anything stored on google.
Finally there is an option (can't remember where) named run in compatible mode. Is this necessary to be active?
Thanks so much!

1. No, but its recommended to have usb debugging enabled, in case anything happens
2.Yes, the device host name can be changed.
3.Yes, you can, just remember you de-selected it in case things go missing
4.No, you don't have to have it checked, but having it checked doesn't do any harm.
Thanks for the really quick feedback!

Can't download app in market using wifi

When I try to download app using wifi at my house my android market stuck at download but when I used library wifi it work fine.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Thank..

dude you have to be more specific. were all other devices with wifi able to connect?
Well it's obviously not your device considering you said it worked on a different network.
so my question to you is why ask a router related question in a cell phone forum?
if you have a modem and a router pull the power cable out of both, wait 15-30 seconds, then plug the MODEM in first(has to be this order) and wait for the MODEm to sync up(if dsl is your service wait for the light labled DSL/SYNC to go solid and if cable wait for the light labled CABLE to go solid). After you have properly synced your MODEM then plug the router in and wait for that to boot up.
Now all of that is only needed if you have NO connection on any device, otherwise you will just be wasting your time.
Please give more details to your issue
make sure you aren't using a firewall type program, like droidwall, or if you are, then you need to grant firewall access to market, and probably tick "allow background data" check box, under android's settings menu

That shouldn't be the issue. Unless the app knows to block market on one network and not the other.
If we knew if other devices or even that one could browse webs we could cancel out a large portion and narrow it down pretty quick

Also make sure your sd card is valid. Mount it on your pc and do a chkdsk, I recently had a market download issue and doing a usb mount my pc wanted to clean the disk. After cleaning it, it started to work again.

Make sure that the firewall for your home network (either on your router or modem) isn't in nazi mode like I had mine set as. I had to open up the necessary ports for my phone to access the Android Market. After a while I got sick of reading logs and opening ports so I just decreased the level of auschwitz my firewall was set as.
I apologize if my wordage offends you, but I had my **** locked down TIGHT.
I think you right.. can you give me instruction to change the firewall or port for my router/modem???
I don't know what kind of modem or router you have. I suggest you find the manuals for your respective devices and see how they tell you to configure your settings. As for the ports, a quick google search finds that you need to open port 5228* on the outside and inside of the firewall for the Google Market. Like I said before, I had to check my logs to see what ports my phone was trying to open and then allow them.

[Q] Customization done. Relock the bootloader?

I've flashed a rom, kernel, radio, some UI tweaks, and I think I'm done with all that and reached a point I'm happy with. Should I relock? Will I lose root/my tweaks by doing that? What are the security risks with keeping the bootloader unlocked? I don't use google wallet or anything else super personal/detrimental if in the wrong hands, but I do have a chasebank app (that requires login every use), the standard gmail integration, and a sensitive photo here and there. I understand that I'll have to unlock it again (and deal with the wipe) if I want to do more serious customizing, but at this point I'm more curious about the pros/cons of keeping the bootloader unlocked during day to day use. In terms of used networks, I connect to my home wifi, and the occasional open wifi when out and about, but usually I forget/don't realize and just keep it on 3g/4g. I also tether every so often. Don't know which of those makes me more vulnerable than others. I live in a pretty unpopulated area so I'm not too concerned about all this, but I am curious.
Don't relock...its pointless if you're not stock
No reason to re-lock. You'll just have to do a data wipe the next time you want to change anything.

There truly is no reason to relock, there is no difference/point.
I understand having to unlock it again would mean another wipe, as mentioned in the OP. I'm fine with that.
All of these posts conflict with this post from this recent Q&A thread. Which is correct? Why would that user post such a thing if it isn't true?

I would suggest locking it if you plan on doing anything remotely sensitive on your device, Google Wallet, corporate email, naked pics of your spouse, etc.

not saying it's the case here, but a lot of people just think they know something.
@JBQ said in android-building something like
-However, if you're keeping your bootloader unlocked at all times
(which is a bad idea) and you're running an official build already,
you can flash a newer one without wiping data and that'll work fine.
Note that you can only move forward, not back. Be careful, though,
it's very easy to wipe data by accident when doing that, and the
default script does that.

he didn't go any further on that. source
perhaps it's a matter of privilege escalation?
relocking the bootloader help security
relocking the bootloader will help defend against "Evil Maid Attacks" amongst other things.
More background info available if you search for "evil maid goes after WhisperCore
why we need a securable bootloader"
(I'd post a link but account is too new)
Yes it will help with security. But by that point, you might as well get one of the "android lost" apps and remotely brick your phone if it's stolen, imo.
As a custom ROM user, you're responsible for your own updates. Which means you can expect to be reflashing stuff in the future. Thus, I don't think it's worth it to have your data wiped again and again.
(But then again, I flash stuff like crazy, so that might be bias on my part.)
It'd be kinda funny to to lock your bootloader for security after flashing completely custom firmware from some unknown source bit of a contradiction.
No.
In another week or so you are gonna be browsing xda and see a new kernel/rom/theme that you like and you're gonna think well I can't flash it coz for some reason I locked my bootloader and I don't want to wipe my sdcard coz I have stuff I want there.
A few days later you are gonna say f*ck it and you are gonna unlock your bootloader again and lose all your sdcard data.
Why?
Because you may not know it yet but you are now a crackflasher. You tried it once and that's all it takes to get addicted.
As others have said, there is only added security if you lose your phone and at that point if there is extremely sensitive data and you can't get it back, you can just remotely wipe it using an app from the marketplace.
Note: said app must be installed before you lose your phone

Note: Said app not doesn't necessarily have to be installed before you lose your phone because you can go to Play Store, remotely install the app, and issue the commands for tracking. (But if you want it to wipe, I believe you have to give it administrative permissions, which does require you to have it installed before and set it up that way). Maybe Avast! even lets you wipe without administrative positions (haven't tried yet).
In order for you data to be secure in case of theft/loss, locking the bootloader is not enough. You need to turn off USB debugging in settings. Otherwise, if someone finds a GN, he can access all the files on it anyway. Bootloader locked or not.

WiFi only - What junk can go??

I have found my old Desire HD that I thought I had lost, and its been locked, I'm now using it as a WiFi only tablet, so I wondered if anyone can tell me what stuff I can safely remove, with Titanium Back Up to get rid of all the dialer and "phone" stuff?
Many thanx in advance
I don't think there is necessary nor It's good to remove the dailer apps as its a part of the system, I can be wrong but in any case it wouldn't be necessary as I don't think they take extra memory, just use the device without a SIM card.

Thats basically what I am doing, I'm just sice of the lock screen being covered with the "NO SIM" message, lol, and it keeping on popping up saying about emergency calls only, lol.
Don't know if removing the dialer will do what you want. Hell, just put honeycomb on it.

Need advanced help...

Everything is hacked.
All my computers. My desire. All hacked.
Since February... getting worse.
My desire installs all these services on its own. Recovery was fake. Didn't let me install apps.
Now I managed to restore my froyo. But still remote vpn services and more.. running in background.
Computers go into a windows powershell mode.. even when I was about to give an old non infected computer.. it started with same issue.. into powershell like ... mode. Everything seems set up.
My flat screen and keyboard was only thing used on old one. So it must be one of those extending my BIOS... taking over my administration account. Sets up homegroup network and so on...
I suspect it all to be metasploid or some kind of port hack. Same with phone... its in some kind of VMWare..formatting partitions , trying to get Su access.. non works.. just faking. Maybe the radio is edited and scripted. Any site download gets an script added on it. Any help will be great

If it is that bad then no choice but to wipe, reformat and re-install - both phone and PCs otherwise you will never know if you are really clean At least most stuff is stored on google so it wont take too long to rebuild your data.
This sounds weird. I have never heard of such a problem. There is no virus that can infect a keyboard or a monitor then transfer itself to the BIOS of a computer, then hack a Windows machine from there. Also, there is no virus that i know of that can infect both a Windows and a Linux machine. If i were you, i'd check for how secure my network is (some viruses can hack a Linux-based router then do all sorts of stuff from there), and thoroughly scan all my machines for viruses while disconnected from the network (using a good and up-to-date antivirus program).
LOL. I knew this happened before.

This guy has to be mocking us. Next thing you know, he's gonna tell us that his case has been hacked and now, whenever he puts a phone in it, the phone gets hacked too and all kinds of bad software get installed on it.
