[Q] Battery life varies when changing batteries - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Here's a potentially interesting one.
With the stock 1800 mA battery I would get 8-10 hours, so I bought a new battery. Not Samsung, but it got pretty good ratings on Amazon. The first run of that battery lasted 28 hours on a single charge. Subsequent charges only lasted 12-16 hours.
So I tried an older 1500 mA battery for a day, then switched back to the 1800 mA. I always get two days from the 1800 on the first time I start using it again, followed by 12-16 hours each time thereafter. Then I'll use the 1500 for a day, and then get two days from the 1800. I can repeat the cycle over and over.
To say it another way:
Day 1: 1500 mA battery gets 8 hours
Day 2: 1800 mA battery gets 48 hours
Day 4: 1800 mA battery gets 14 hours
Day 5: 1800 mA battery gets 14 hours
Day 6: 1500 mA battery gets 8 hours
Day 7: 1800 mA battery gets 48 hours
Day 9: 1800 mA battery gets 14 hours
Day 10: 1800 mA battery gets 14 hours
How is it that I can get two days from the 1800 only after using an 1500? If it is capable of two days, why doesn't it just work that way all the time?

no clue. i think if u had screenies of ur battery stats and what rom/kernal/modem you are using you will get more replys from people who can help.
ive never had better then 12 hours so i personally would be happy with ur batterys

Attached are some screenshots. However there really isn't any difference if you compare all the different times I tried it. Day one always give me great battery life while following days blows.

use bettbattstats and cpu spy.. there are so many different things that affect battery.. this is controversial.. but are you calibrating your batteries?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

I think a lot of these weird battery behaviors are due to mobile network. Back on Gingerbread it always kept a steady line but since ICS now we get a lot of black. This behavior is not present on the GS3's ICS nor on my Evo3D running ICS. Both have steady lines. Also you have a big red line which doesn't look good I would think that means you had no service which can kill battery. I just keep rebooting my phone till I see that my percentage is going down slower then the last boot up. This phone is weird sometimes it's great on batt but most of the time it's not.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

My battery life is only consistent when my use is consistent which is basically never. I have some things optimized for battery life and others for convenience. I have 2 extra batteries of different brands and just carry one with me now and don't worry. External charger is your friend, I rarely ever plug in to charge anymore.

I believe that 1500mA battery in your cycle is throwing things off. I use 2 1800mA and they give similar hours.

yeah you can see right when the mobile data turned red his battery dropped twice as fast.
i suggest turning off your data whenever your not using it. especially 4g. seems to kill mine in mins.
also are you ics or jb?

I'm running 4.0.4 - ICS. This is the stock Sprint, non-root.
I can tell you that my usage patterns are almost the same every weekday or every weekend. Monday through Friday my use is always low during work hours and then higher when I'm outside the office. Saturday and Sunday is equally predictable with about the same amount of usage.
The difference in the number of hours I get has nothing to do with usage, and strictly whether I had a smaller battery in the day before.
So I guess another way of saying it: my phone/battery is quite capable of 48 hours of use on a single charge. I just have to have a day on the 1500 mA battery first. Which makes me think that there is a reason that the phone isn't being smart battery consumption and it has nothing to do with my use. I use Better Battery Stats every day to keep an eye on things and I'm familiar with everything that runs.

How far down do you let it go before you charge? Do you let it run all the way out? On codename once mine hits 20 it often hovers for a while. Same when it drops down around 6 so I typically run mine down almost all the way.

Firmware version related to battery life?

Since there now seem to be a few different firmware versions floating around, shall we see if any of them give better battery life.
Of course we don't have an objective measure of battery life, but we cna get an impression.
My experience:
TMobile UK f/w 1.15.110.10
Battery poor - It needs topping up through the day or I won't make it to teatime, worse than my Touch HD which was 18m old. Similar usage, ie push email, Twitter sync, intermittent browsing, an hour a day ebook reading.
T-mobile UK same firmware
Battery fine, much better than my old G1, need to charge every other day (as opposed to everyday/overnight each day).
Uses (per day):
Push Email
Light Web browsing
About an hour of gaming
About 40 SMS sent
Twitter/Facebook constantly
About 2 hours of music usage - Spotify
Music using BT Earphones, Bluetooth on around 2.5 hours.
That's a big difference in battery life between you two, I wonder if there is a bad batch of batteries?
I think it has nothing to do with batteries or software. It's all about how the phone is used, what the signal strength is, etc.
Mine lasts two days on moderate use, but I charge it every night anyway.

I also have the matrix style live wallpaper running http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/fishnoodle.digitalrain/.
It may be worth noting that I no longer charge overnight, only charging when it's low and until it's fully charged (I used to charge my G1 overnight or basically when I was on the desk, it became overcharged, battery swelled up, would only last about 2 hours but sometimes it would last about 10 minutes).
I also have no problems with signal and am pretty much constantly on HSDPA.

how long full charge takes ? at what battery % you start to charge ur phone?
did you charge till full since you first unbox your phone?
I have my brightness set to half way and have watched a few movie clips lasting maybe 20 mins and have just done a bit of brief messing about and i find the battery drains to about half way after this.
I have not let it drain out yet but it does not look like it would last a day if i had to listen to music surf and do a bit of gaming.

My firmware is same but battery is brilliant for me, try using a power manager and maybe look at widgets draining battery. I'm not using any widgets and have net off when not in use.
I wonder if it's about signal strength. By far the biggest drain on a smartphone is 3G, and my signal is quite variable.

I've just came back from Austria where I was using the net a lot over there for various things and I can tell you now, the signals over there are top notch!
The speeds remain consistent and the signals never go down by more than by one bar.
The T-Mobile network works perfectly even in the Underground!
This I feel had contributed to my battery lasting so long the last 3 days!
I've already noticed more of a drain since being back at home today!

I put it on charge when it starts blinking so less than 14%

I think if you continually charge from when you have 30-90% the battery will perform worse than if you charge it from dead / near dead. I have been charging my tp2 over night when the battery is extremely low and can now squeeze 3-4 days use out of it.

It doesn't really matter with Li-ion batteries. It is recommended to do a full discharge every 30 charge cycles or so for the gauge to recalibrate, but the battery itself has no "memory" effect.
There's no difference if you charge it from 70% or 15%

I've found with my T-Mobile Desire that the battery is really struggling and I can't get it to last a day as yet. I spent 3 hours with a friend that has an unbranded one and I saw my T-Mobile rom'd battery life deplete faster than his doing the same things. I think the T-Mobile ROM needs an update asap!
Since my last post, my battery the last few days has been bad.
I've also noticed now that it will only charge up to 98% and will only go to 100% if i remove cable and put back in. Then only to drop back to 98% straight away after I have removed it and then drop rapidly.
On T-Mobile using the older firware. Have asked T-Mob if the Firmware is the issue.
My honest guess is that all you guys will see an improvement in battery life over the next few days. Li-on batteries do need a few cycles before they'll give best performance and obviously no-one here has had their phone for more than a week or two.
I'm sure as the phone is rooted/custom roms appear/htc release the kernel/blah blah improvements will be made, but if I were you I'd definitely sit out any changes made purely on the basis of battery life until you've had the phone a couple of weeks. If it's still crappy after that, then it's obviously worth looking deeper.
I'm on tmob contact phone with my firmware version @ *.11 think some ppl have *.10 so not sure if the ota update will come to me but I've found that if I turn everything to manual update and turn 3g off when not using it I can get 3 days out of it with about 1 and a half hours each day of general use. Before that it wasn't lasting a full day! What firmware is every1 on??

Mine is .10 - the Battery at first was really good, I used it abroad in first few days and was great, 3G was used everynow and then, but wasn't a drain like it is over here in UK.
Now i'm getting last few days were on charge it sticks at 98% and drops pretty quickly.
T-Mob have asked me to factory reset it today and monitor to see if any apps are causing the issue rather than the firmware.

My - Battery Sucks -

I have to charge it twice a day, and my use is for only couple of hours talking and few browsing.
I tried that with stock as well as
[ROM] cwm-Phantom-X-
is anyone else also experiencing the same?
a few hours being like 10 hours straight talking?
You're crazy. This battery is the best I've seen in a long time.

I can drain a battery in 6 hours or less. I can't make it through a 8 hour work day without charging it. I guess you guys that go 12+ hours on a charge aren't power users. I tried every rom and kernel and my results are exactly the same.
Maybe the people who are complaining about battery life came from a flip phone or a blackberry. As far as smartphones go, this is the best you'll find for the features and enormous screen we have. Don't believe me then get an Amaze, Sensation, myTouch 4g Slide or G2x.

The battery lasts so long that i forget to charge it, and then i run out of battery
I'm a heavy user literally all I do is watch 1080p movies and plays games on my phone. I get twelve to fourteen hours every day. I also get at least a text every fifteen minutes if not more. Maybe the developers didn't remove career ciq which bogs down performance and drain the battery. You can also try a different kernel.

don't forget that in areas where you have crappy signal, you phone pumps up the power to try and compensate. you may notice your phone heating up in your pocket too. If you have no signal at all, i weep for your battery life.
go into airplane mode to save juice.
I too get 24 hours or more from light to moderate use with juggernaut.
Heavy use still nets me at least 10 hours. Although I toggle things off if I remember and don't need them. Like wifi, data, auto bright, sync, etc. although WAY lead important with this phone than it was with vibrant running cm7.

Why don't you try adding another core to your G2 and see if you can even get 6+ hours!!!
Cmon man, this is a dual core phone...it's just common sense that it will use twice as much battery power to get it to run smoothly.
But honestly, I was able to get 21hrs out of a full charge. With heavy use but i had it UC'd @ 1.2max and 192min. Still ran pretty smooth tho.
I get about 18 to 20 hours from a full charge. Stock. Non-rooted, and no modifications of any kind. I have all my apps auto-sync every 4 hours, and my usual display "on time" is around 4 to 5 hours. Here are some screen shots. This is the best battery life I ever had.
Just to add. My brightness is at 40%
is it better to use autobrightness on our device or a set brightness setting to save battery?

I'd say set it to certain level. Having the phone constantly adjust I would think would use more battery.

Battery Life atrocious

Fully charged my LTE Nexus while it was on and then fully charged while it was off. Restarted the phone, haven't done anything with it in 30 mins and it's already down 4% to 96%. What's the deal?!?!?
Someone said in another thread... if you look at your Android System usage in the battery meter, its way too high... sounds like a bug - apparently a custom kernel has fixed this, but I havent rooted yet to test it.

Although I prefer the GN, laptopmag.com found that the Rezound and RAZR have clear advantages when it comes to web surfing time on 4G. GSM GN wasn't too impressive either.
"On the LAPTOP Battery Test (web surfing over 4G on 40-percent brightness), the Galaxy Nexus lasted just 3 hours and 40 minutes. That's a full 3 hours less than the smartphone average (6:38), and about 1:20 less than the unlocked Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile's network. By comparison, the HTC Rezound lasted 5:03 and the Droid RAZR lasted 4:48. Verizon Nexus owners may want to turn off 4G when they don't really need it or find other ways to conserve juice."

I forget this every time I get a new phone!! It's odd considering I load roms very, very frequently on whatever phone I have at the time and I know I have to wait a couple of battery cycles for battery life to get acceptable with any new rom, but I can't seem to remember it with a new phone!
I'm going to chill and wait and see.
Also, let it die completely and then charge it up 100000% (leave it charging overnight if you can). This is a good way to "train" the battery.

Do NOT do this whatever you do. You should never completely drain a Li-Ion battery except when calibrating it after flashing a rom. Draining li-ion batteries hurts its battery life.

Well, that's what the other poster is talking about. "training" = calibrating.
It doesn't harm a thing letting them drain all the way to the point of the phone shutting down. I've been doing this for all my phones, new roms, etc. I always end up with excellent battery life.

Sorry, but you are wrong.
Deep discharges do "harm" a LiIon battery physically (there is damage done to the membranes in the battery at a molecular level).
You will get about ~500 full (deep) discharges from your battery, but you will get more than double of that if you only discharge to 50% and more if you discharge even less. So the best thing is to charge your LiIon cell as often as possible, with the exception that it's also not healthy for the cell to be at full charge voltage (4.20 V) for a prolonged time either.
Yikes. You people with good battery life are lucky haha. I'm on my 6th charge and I still get around an hour and forty minutes of battery life. I'm at like 50% after an hour or so... and that's with LTE off too...

Hyperion battery under-performing?

Got the Hyperion last week from Amazon and overall I was impressed with its initial performance. It was a huge boost from the oem battery as I didn't have to recharge my phone at all during the day.
My only concern is that I've noticed I haven't been seeing similar numbers as others have mentioned with their Hyperion. I mean, I'm not getting 24+ hrs of use with 8 hrs of on screen time. I'll take a photo next time when its at its lowest charge but I am averaging about 5-6 hrs of on screen time, and thats with basic use, surfing the web, texting, couple phone calls, no games or movies, wifi/gps/sync on, and 30% brightness, non rooted as well.
Does anyone else feel their Hyperion isn't performing as others have claimed?

24+ hours with 8+ hours screen is is down right impossible. The reason people get extended batteries is because they want more than the stocks screen time for 4-5 hours without worrying about their phone dying.
Not really... With the correct kernel and ROM I can push that if not surpass it. Paranoid 2.51 leankernel 1.6 been home all day from the storm... That's 3 hours 12 mins screen on time @ 67% juice left.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
For me, not so much. Today for an example, I got a little over 12 hrs until I hit the 5% mark with almost 6 hours of screen on time. Home all day too with wifi on and screen brightness at 30%.
One thing I did notice though is that the "sdcard" used 1 hr and 17 mins of the battery. I've never even seen the sdcard on the activity list before, this is the 2nd time I've seen it since installing the Hyperion battery. Hmm what could it be?
I almost made it.. I'm running Aokp build 4. Not sure what the kernel is.
Plus the batteries have to go through a charging period... I noticed the first day it lasted a long time almost 2 days. (1day22hrs)I forget what the screen on time.

Have you looked at any wakelocks your getting with better battery stats? That is pretty bad for the 4200 batt. Did you do the charging cycles that were detailed in the user manual?
Hey I was just passing by and reading threads, although I don't have this battery, a very possible reason that your battery life might not be as good is that you're still on stock. Notice everyone else who posted is on a custom rom + kernel. The GS3 stock roms are nice but come very bloated with apps. I read somewhere that on stock when you start up your phone, by default it starts a very impressively high number of processes ~50ish. I could be wrong on that but yeah a bloated stock rom MIGHT be the problem. Just my thought.

Have you looked at any wakelocks your getting with better battery stats? That is pretty bad for the 4200 batt. Did you do the charging cycles that were detailed in the user manual?

No I have not tried that app yet.
And yes I did follow the initial charging instructions as well.
It has to be something with the phone because even with the stock battery I had terrible performance, it'd last me only 3 hrs of on screen time where I've heard most users receive around 5.
He is my cpu time, it seems normal since the phone is spent most of its time in deep sleep.
Good at first/No so good after a couple months?
I havce the Hyperion, and have experienced close to 48 hours of life, albeit with very little use. With moderate use, I've experienced 30 hours. My screen time never surpasses 3 hours per day.
A few weeks ago I installed the Serenity 1.1 ROM. I have not been able to get more than 15 hours with that ROM.
This morning, I put in my stock battery, and it has been in for 9 hours so far, and is currently at 83%. I did a reboot about 4 hours ago, so don't have accurate screen-on stats. But I'm never at 83% this time of day with the Hyperion.
ANyone else experience good, then later, poor performance from this battery?
In the beginning I head awesome battery power. Now the battery is horrible I only get 2 hours screen time at 65 percent. Any ideas? Also undervolted and running 1.8mhz but battery still runs hot.

After 6 month, the battery performance get worse

I just want to know is there any guy like me, have used one x for 5~ 6 months. Now the battery performace get worse?
I have not changed the rom for 4 months. Same usage pattern. Before after full charge, the battery go down from 100 to 90 take more than hour. Now just few minutes it drop fast to that. Also screen on time seems only 2.5~3 hours compare to before is 3.5~4 in average.
I do not hope to get a reason why this happen, but just see is other old user of one x has same experience see the obvious battery performace down.
Thanks for your input!
I own hox since it came out and what I can say about battery is that it is very inconsistent, it all depends on where you use phone more home, work, bad signal areas etc. Sometimes I get 4 hours screen time on 24 hours standby, sometimes only 2. I can't really tell how it should be. All I care is that I'm feeling ok with its battery. Although I'm really liking the idea of being able to put in onex+ battery, but I couldn't do it myself

2.5 hours screen on time is a drop of 10% every 15 minutes. Not every few minutes.
Try installing better battery stats to see.if anything is using the battery when.it shouldn't be.
Also, it could be something like signal strength.
I have been destroying my battery in many ways: overcharging, playing games while charging, discharging completely...but it still doesn't get worse...
Look after apps you've installed in last month, they are the evil...(the worst of them a those with notifications
