Hi, I want to buy a new phone and I'm choosing between the Galaxy Nexus and S III. Which one do you recommend? I like how the Nexus looks, and getting updates first. I like the specs in the S III but I'm not a big fan of how it looks and I definitely don't like the TouchWiz UI. Where I live there is not much difference in price. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!
What carrier?

S3 then sell it and buy a nexus and profit (if you are going on contract) i actually had achance to test the s3 and on 4.0.4 it seemed pretty descent ... you could go with the s3 for sure either phone will get huge amount of support and i guess s3 is more future proof on specs so up to you
If on Verizon get the Gnex. If on any other carrier the S3.

Unlocked phones. Where I live carriers do not sell locked phones.

Well only one has the new Jelly Bean.....
That was my reasoning. By the time the s3 gets jelly bean Google will have a new nexus device out with an update. If I was Verizon I would not be happy with googles timing of jellybeans release. Especially with them collaborating on the nexus

U wont need s3 godly hardware with our buttery super smooth JB powered nexus~

Get sgs3 since it is better hardware than nexus. You can change the software but not hardware.
Flash CM10 on sgs3 and you should be good.
I have a galaxy nexus because I bought the unlocked gsm for $350 which is a good deal and use it as a secondary phone

absolutely nothing is stable like stock, especially on phones which don't come with aosp natively ( i.e everything except nexus).

And was patched in August, sadly because of carriers having to approve of updates, many have not seen the fix yet.
Try that link with your android browser and see if your dialer exposes your imei number, if it does nothing then we're ok
Anyway, I think its only for samsung devices running touchwhizzed

This is absolutely WRONG!
I've tested this bug today on 4 devices without TouchWiz, including a Galaxy Nexus with 4.0.4, and it WORKS!
The only safe device I saw was my Galaxy Nexus with 4.1.1 stock rom. All the rest were vulnerable! Be careful!
This is definitely going to have to be addressed, I'm surprised no one has caught it sooner

Then you should submit your results to Samsung. All of my phones bring up the dialer. That's not the issue. Only my SGS Vibrant on Android 4.0.3 brings up my IMEI as well from the stock browser. That's the issue.
Chrome is unaffected.
Just did it to my ns and gnex and I'm good

I think it's safe to assume most people that have moved from a Nexus to an S3 wouldn't continue to lurk in the Nexus forums. Probably best to ask in the S3 forums :good:
I love my Nexus and will always stay Nexus for the stock Android experience and abundance of ROMs. That said though I did try a S3 4g/LTE model today and was MIGHTY impressed with how snappy it was with Jellybean.
I've been tempted several times. Its the physical buttones that are holding me back.
I recently had the chance to get it myself. But I couldn't do it. I was looking at the aosp development, and from what I'm used to it was weak. I could live with touchwiz but I just don't like it. The physical keys where also a downer. Just something I wouldn't like to give up. And since i already have a quad core tablet there really was nothing besides a better camera and even then the gnex camera is pretty good I don't listen to what others say I know what I've seen it do.

I have both as well (SGS2 being my daily phone) and for me (my own personal preference) both the GNex and SGS3 has their own perks in their respective right. With that being said, if i had to choose, my GNex will come out on top each time. But my SGS3 is a damn good device.

The latest Touchwiz is pretty bad. I had TW ICS on my tab2 and just recently we got TW JB on the tab2. I don't know if the SGS3 will get something similar but this latest version of TW JB on my Tab 2 is slow, the browser force closes and the interface has been changed for the worst. The ICS version of TW was better than this newest version they have released.

The bigger question is did you read what he said? Now re-read what you typed.
He was talking about AOSP. If there was still confusion, he posted specifically that he was talking about AOSP, over an hour before you posted.

I have both and most of the time use my s3 for the battery life. If I want to try something new or interesting I'll usually do it on the nexus. As far as bad aosp goes I'm not sure what you're smoking, we get nightly cm10 builds consistently. I'm currently running the m2 release and it's perfectly suitable for every day use. Prior to this I was running paranoid and it was great. M2 just has better battery life. Also while they do get worse battery life than touch wiz it's still better than my nexus.

lolno.
Well a lot of people I know have the s3. A lot.
Anyway...I've had a lot of opportunities to play with it. It is very very very fast first and foremost!
I've mostly played with the ICS versions. So smooth and a real joy to use. The nature UX is also very nice. Its one of the best android skin I've used from any OEM I think. They finally moved away from trying to mimic the IOS look and feel with the UI which is good.
I've tried the jellybean version of the s3 just once and to be honest I could not tell a big difference. That's because the s3 is awesome with speed and responsiveness even with ICS.
The screen is excellent also, and the feel and look of the handset in the hand is nice. It looks a lot like the galaxy nexus with buttons.
I would not move to the s3 as a full time replacement for the galaxy nexus however. Simple reason being that I had the galaxy note and waiting for ICS and Jellybean was not my thing.
I'm too comfortable with quick stock updates from my nexus s days. Plus the main reason also...the galaxy nexus is insanely fast and smooth already!

Is it worth it? Which would be better? Nexus 4 or Note II?
If you don't care about having the latest version of android I say note II. if money and updates are a concern then Nexus 4 cannot be beaten. Galaxy Nexus is still very capable though.

Maybe go for the note ii, but i wouldn't swap it for the nexus 4 with no removable battery or lte radio
If I were to choose right now I would go with note ii, the battery life, bigger screen and LTE are all pluses. Although I'm waiting until s4/note3

Since i am mostly on wifi, i don't care about lte. Software updates, unlock-ability, and the dev community would tip the scales toward the nexus 4 if i was in the market.

I have a work galaxy Nexus which was my primary phone. My personal phone was a iphone 4. I dropped the iphone and got a note 2. I'm a flashaholic who spent many of days flashing a new rom on my Nexus. I always said I'd never get anything other than a Nexus.
I'm in love with my note 2. I barely ever pick up my Nexus unless I need to answer the phone or use it for tethering.
Just fyi the note 2 has a Huge dev community. Tw roms and aosp roms are dropped on a daily basis..
I can't speak for the Nexus 4 but you can't go wrong with the note 2.

I say its not worth it. The GNex isn't that out of date hardware wise and definitely not software wise. I personally wouldn't as there isn't much the 2 phones can do that the GNex can't. Cheers.

Besides the fact that it's not worth it, a bigger screen isn't always a plus - if you want to use it as a phone...I don't like holding my phone with two hands :/
Hey all. I'm temporarily using a galaxy nexus (man, I missed this device) but I've noticed some real flaky WiFi behavior. It constantly disconnects and reconnects. Not to mention the range ain't that great. Don't get me wrong--i know what a special device this is, I'm just wondering if b/c maybe its a few years old this is simply as good as it gets with the WiFi radio it has. I've been using the galaxy s4 for a bit but I just sold it and am waiting for the note 3. This nexus is my "back up" device.
Thanks.

I'm running paranoid android on 4.2.2. Can u recommend a good kernel for better WiFi performance? After a bit more testing yesterday I realize that the range is really the issue. If I'm close enough to my router I have no problems. But with my other phones I don't have this issue anywhere in my house. On this nexus tho, if I'm in my spare bedroom the WiFi goes in and out constantly.
Thanks again.

give it a try, check if your router uses the 5ghz band.
my router is capable of 2.4 and 5ghz using the same ssid for both.
always had the problem that my phone connected to the 5ghz and lost connection to wifi through 2 walls.
after setting it to 2.4ghz only it got better.

big fan of stock image with stock kernel, especially since the 4.3 update.
i did not expierience a increase of wifi range with custom kernels, maybe a little bit more throughput.
but if you want to try a custom kernel its up to franco-kernel.
