I have a MHL adapter with the older pin for the GS2. I wanted to buy one for my new GNII. I know I need the one with the new pin setup and I'm trying to be cheap by not ordering from Samsung. My problem is they are both called MHL despite the fact that the pins are different. How can I tell the two apart so I can make sure that my third party one will work?
You need to get one with 11 pins that is the key. That being said I still haven't seen a third party that works without occasional snow on the tv and I use mhl every day. I ended up having to use the official Samsung adapter
Anything that works with the GS3 will work with the Note II.
If you already have the old MHL adapter, check this out: http://www.amazon.com/Original-Sams...10BEBSTD/dp/B0083FYL0O/ref=pd_bxgy_cps_text_y

I doubt that'll work as it's not an MHL connector, which I understand is HDMI and USB combined, but if it somehow does... bargain!
Lol now i look properly its not going to work at all
imo very stupid not to use standard HDMI mini port... now we have to buy adapters and ****.. and the phone won't charge if you don't have special adapter.. epic fail imo.. anyway they should include adapters with the phone.
I agree, they should include the required cables and adapters in the box, other manufacturers like Nokia do with their flagship handsets.
I think MHL will ultimately be better than mini HDMI port though, since its looking very likely to become the next standard connection.
I'm hoping to get one of the MHL cable/adapters from the MHL consortium for my Clove Blog review, if I do then I will post up a youTube video for everyone. At the present time the consortium PR person is trying to procure one for me, but it seems likely its inordinately difficult, so remains to be seen whether I will have it in time for the review.
In the very least, you'd expect them to have manufactured and released the accessories by the time the actual phone is released.

First stock due mid-June just saying.
Can someone confirm for me that this is the same cable. They call it an Ethernet Micro-HDMI (Type D).
Edit: Monoprice[)0Tcom has them for like 5 bucks. I can give the link so you can see the cable once I get some more posts in here.
I'm not worried about the Ethernet part, it should not get in the way because the extra connections for it are female.
Also, there is a lot of great info on these forums. Look forward to sticking around and modding some phones in the future.
Edit 2: So when searching for the Samsung cable by Goog'ling the phone, they call it either "microUSB" or "HML port"
That site has two different types that they call: Mini-HDMI (Type C) and Micro-HDMI (Type D) the type C looks like the usual Samsung cable connection, I was just wondering if there is some different way they wired the Samsung cables so that we had to use those ones. I cannot see them doing that though since there are many devices switching to the same cable as well.
The trick is that standard HDMI so far does not include a link for power. The Samsung MHL adapter has a microUSB plug that connects into the phone and a microUSB jack to connect your charger, and the mini-HDMI jack to hook up to the TV so the device gets charged while playing back. In a future specification update, HDMI will probably be amended to include a power link.

Clove told me that the MHL cables from different manufacturers will be compatible which is useful to know. I guess they all conform to the standard

Just seen this in the description for the HTC version - interesting
" Also if your television supports MHL enabled HDMI connections, then you can charge your HTC Sensation when connected and control the Sensation using the television remote (MHL enabled televisions expected late 2011)"

Thats only true if you TV is MHL capable (hint: nobodies is yet).
i dont understand how the phone has is out but the cables are not? how do they know it works if theres no cables lol
I have been trying to set it up with first a generic 11 pin adapter and then the Samsung 11 to 5 pin adapter with an earlier HML adapter that worked with my HTC Amaze.
The generic one worked OK initially, and then started either not connecting or doing so without audio. Tried the Samsung plug adapter with old the HML, but no response at all. Am on [Mixed Base v29] XquiziT xD. The earlier brief success was with an earlier version of that ROM.
I am reluctant to order the Samsung OEM 11 pin, but am also worried the initial 11 pin may have zonked the connection - but don't know if that is at all likely. Am looking for others experiences with these adapters and any suggestions on a route to take at this point.
I think I remember seeing something about previous versions of the cable not working with the S3. Something about some pins being switched. So I think you have to get specifically an S3 cable.
+1 What M4R10 said.
If you have an older GS2 MHL adapter it was a 5- PIN adapter not the GS3 11-PIN adapter.
You will need this converter tool in order for older MHL adapters to work on your GS3.

If I did not make it clear - that is what I have that did not work either = as well as a generic 11 pin adapter. I am wondering is the tool ONLY works with Samsung's OEM original 5 pin adapter (although that should not be the case).

No, you were absolutely clear. People just don't read before they respond.. (silly)
I have the same set up as you. I have the adapter and I too experience issues. At first it works just fine, then it freezes after a few minutes. I only tried it twice on the day I got the 11 pin adapter, so who knows maybe it will work fine.
Will try again tonight and post back. I'm on CM10 now so we'll see if that makes a difference (don't see why it should, but you never know.. TW can be so glitchy sometimes)
Mine works fine I have a generic hml to hdmi cable that I got at a t mobile store and I bought a Samsung 11 pin converter my rom is cyanogenmod 10 nighty

You didnt make it clear.
Re read what you typed.
Samsung 11 to 4 pin adapter
I said 5 pin I thought you used some aftermarket adapter that was missing a pin.
Might want to edit your main post.
Im guessing ingenious247 didnt catch that either.

I did, just figured it was a typo. Since I have the same adapter I knew what he meant
I am going to see if it (the 5-11 pin connector) works on stock LJ4 leak. I still wish I could be sure if I have a hardware or software issue.
Update It did not work, so I tried a Samsung 11 PIN adapter. Still no luck until i read their instruction to use the Samsung charging adapter and cable to power it 0 THEN IT WORKED !!!!
I am going to try again with the HML 5 pin HM and 11 pin adapter with the Samsung charger and see if it also works. Will also post results - it is a cheaper fix if it does.
Per previous post, I tried the Samsung 5 PIN to 11 PIN adapter in conjunction with a generic (Amazon) MHL adapter.
This had not worked previously. But after finding it needed to use the OEM Samsung USB cable to power an 11 PIN MHL Samsung adapter, I tried the power cord with the above and now it also works. Therefore, I can return the more expensive Samsung 11 PIN MHL (was $35 from Amazon but can be had directly from Samsung for $20 with a promo code) - lol.
I wish I could change the thread title to say HDMI now works.
Well the title pretty much sums it up (should be with third PARTY adapter...). I have 3, yes THREE microUSB to HDMI out. They all work the same way, 1-end goes to phone, 1-microUSB input for charging and powering the adapter, 1-HDMI output (1 is fullsize, 1 is micro HDMI in, the other goes all the way to the TV).
None of them work with the S3 though. Is there a software hack or patch that can fix this or does it HAVE to be a Samsung officially branded adapter?
Sounds like you have the 5 pin mhl adapter. The Galaxy S3 requires an 11 pin adapter.
You can find them on amazon, ebay, etc.
You can also get a 5pin to 11pin converter like this one.

Thanks for that info. I had no idea there was a physical difference (number of pins) between the adapters. I was thinking more along the lines of Samsung have a proprietary chip inside their adapters that prevented 3rd party ones from working (like something Sony or Apple would do lol). But if its physically different then there is no getting around that. Guess I need ANOTHER adapter.....
Yup. They went to the 11 pin layout with the gs3. Not sure about note2 but I assume it'll be the same. It kinda angered a number of people after release which is why the made the converter. You should be able to find 3rd party versions at this point. Just make sure it specifically says for the S3!

Starting from scratch should this work? All I will need extra is hdmi cable?

Bought The Official Samsung HDMI Adapter, 2x HDMI Adapters From The SGS2 I Had & The 11 To 5 Pin Adapter For My Note 2. The Official HDMI Adapter From Samsung Worked Fine But Doesn't Work Anymore The Other Two Work Just Fine For My Phone The Only Problem Is They Require That Stupid 11-5 Pin Adapter And I Have A Otterbox Which Is A Pain To Keep Taking Off. I Heard Somewhere On The Threads The Official HDMI Adapter Doesn't Work Because My Device Is Modified. Is There A Way To Get The Samsung Adapter To Work ? Without Unrooting Or Reflashing. I Am On Stock Pre-Rooted Rom
I'm having problem with my 8.4. It is rooted on stock.
I can't get MHL to work, I tested the cable on my SII and it works fine. I don't know what's wrong with it.
carefully check connector pin count

From pictures on Ebay the charge+ port on the S2 has 7 pins in line. For sure, the microUSB port on the 8.4 has one row of 5 plus another row of 6. Thats 11 pins. The plug might fit in the hole, but it ain't goin' work.
There are a couple HDMI adapters for the 8.4 that do work fine. See the thead under accessories.
MHL cable layout changed from the Galaxy S3 onwards. The cable I bought after the change has worked on all my Samsung devices since. They are cheap as chips on ebay.
11 pin adapter
I have the newer MHl to HDMI along with 11 pin adapter and still MHL not working
